Federal Reserve Examiners Tell Oklahoma Bank to Scrap Christmas Buttons, Online Bible Verse

KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City reported that Christianity was apparently offensive, government bank examiners determined in a bank visit in Perkins, Oklahoma. Federal Reserve examiners come every four years to make sure banks are complying with a long list of regulations. The examiners came to Perkins last week. And the team from Kansas City deemed a Bible verse of the day, crosses on the teller’s counter, and buttons that say “Merry Christmas, God With Us” were inappropriate. The Bible verse of the day on the bank's Internet site also had to be taken down. read more

AP, Seattle Times Blame GOP for Downing DREAM Act; In Truth, Five Democrats’ Votes Scuttled Cloture

Today liberal Senate Democrats failed to garner the 60-vote threshold to end debate on and move to a final passage vote for the DREAM Act. In covering the story, the news wire credited Republican opposition for “doom[ing]” the legislation, but the math doesn't work out when you look at the breakdown of the votes on the motion to end debate — also known as invoking cloture. Krauthammer and Shields Spar Over Pelosi-Taliban Joke and Rush Limbaugh

Charles Krauthammer on Friday made a humorous comparison between the Taliban's popularity in Afghanistan and Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Cali.) approval rating in America that clearly riled Mark Shields. So put off was Shields that he not only took issue with Krauthammer's joke, but he also went after something conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said about Pelosi earlier in the week (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

AP Headline: Keeping 2011-2012 Income Tax Rates the Same Is ‘Big New Tax Law’

Did you know that the “big new tax law” signed by President Obama yesterday “will save taxpayers, on average, about $3,000 next year,” and that it will have “tax breaks for being married, having children, paying for child care, going to college or investing in securities”? Don't spend that extra $3,000 yet, because it mostly won't be there. With the only major exception being the 2-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax, and of course barring new legislation the next Congress may take on, the tax laws for the next two years will essentially be the same as they have been since 2003, when Congress lowered marginal income, capital gain, and dividend income tax rates. This lack of major change didn't stop the Ministry of Propaganda — er, the Associated Press — and reporter Stephen Ohlemacher from calling the new legislation “the most significant new tax law in a decade,” when there's almost nothing “new” about it, or from trumpeting how much certain American families will “save” as a result. Here are a few paragraphs from Ohlemacher's report : read more

Bozell Column: Exploiting the Teen Temptress

You may have never heard of the 17-year-old actress Taylor Momsen, but she represents everything that’s wrong with pop culture today. At seven, she starred as the adorable Cindy Lou Who in Jim Carrey’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” but there’s nothing adorable in what she’s done lately. Momsen is a “multiple threat,” matching acting on CW’s smutty teen series “Gossip Girl” with a “music career” with a band accurately titled “The Pretty Reckless.” In July, still aged 16, Momsen's music video for the song “Miss Nothing” featured her in raccoonish eye makeup wearing a white silk bodysuit, fishnet stockings and garters – not exactly your standard high school junior outfit – a child, crawling, standing and lying on her back on a banquet table offering herself figuratively as a morsel for men twice her age. In September came another video, for the song “Make Me Wanna Die,” where she walked down the street, systematically stripping until she stood in a fiery cemetery in her underwear and stockings. She promised in the lyrics she would steal and die for her beloved. read more

Ed Schultz Producer’s Advice to Obama on Handling CEOs: ‘Put a Gun to Their Head’

Agreed, certain people should not be allowed access to firearms. Here's an example of one of those people. Bloomberg News Hypes Balance in New Opinion Section, But Staff Suggests Leftward Tilt

Bloomberg News has taken an unorthodox step in the world of wire services, and created an opinion section that it says “will embrace a diversity and variety of opinion.” But early signs suggest a liberal tilt to”Bloomberg View”, as it's called. It will be edited by David Shipley, former deputy editor of the New York Times opinion page, and James Rubin, who was a deputy Secretary of State under President Clinton. Furthermore, Bloomberg employees are quite open about the fact that the views of the company's president, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, will be reflected prominently in its content. read more
