Government Shutdown 2011: What You Need to Know

Negotiations continue in an effort to forestall the great federal government shutdown of 2011, but both parties continue to dig in their heels in D.C. With all the rhetorical arguments, the finger pointing and buzzwords surfacing around this potentially cataclysmic event, it’s easy to get confused. It’s also crucial to stay informed about what really matters. Lucky for you, THG’s here. Here are 10 things you need to know about the impending shutdown, which will occur at midnight if no deal is reached: The President is the tanner of these two guys, but not by that much. Congress’ awesome 23 percent approval rating may REALLY tank! FEAR NOT, Congress will still be paid, though. Their staff? Nah. Planned Parenthood funding is involved. We’re not going there. The Bachelor host Chris Harrison is being sent in to mediate. You may actually get a reprieve from all that junk mail soon! 2011 is not 1995. No, seriously, it’s not. It’s 16 years later. The United States government can’t figure out how to cut spending, or raise taxes to pay for all that spending, or some combination thereof. Donald Trump will somehow use this to plug Celebrity Apprentice , tout his fiscal conservative credentials, and question Obama’s nationality. THG will remain open throughout any shutdown. Many services face lengthy interruption and an uncertain future, but not celebrity gossip .

Bill O’Reilly Calls Out Donald Trump for Obama Birth Certificate Claims

It’s come to this: Bill O’Reilly is the voice of reason. On that host’s Fox News talk show last night, the journalist called out Donald Trump for pushing the absurd notion that Barack Obama was born outside the United States. Referring to multiple announcements in Honolulu papers that documented Obama’s birth, O’Reilly quipped to his guest: “What is he, the Baby Jesus? There was a sophisticated conspiracy to smuggle this baby back into the country?” O’Reilly went on to doubt that Trump could possibly believe such nonsense, challenging the supposed Presidential candidate for just trying to be “provocative” and remain in the news. Top 10 50 Cent Songs

Continued here:

50 Cent has been known to be a trouble maker in the music industry and it may be easier to pick his top ten beefs, but it is just as easy to pick 50 Cent’s top 10 songs. After dealing with industry politics and the politics of the streets, 50 Cent found himself along side Eminem dominating the rap game. Check out my top 10 50 Cent songs below. WBW: Top 9 Music Videos Of The 2000s “In Da Club” –  They say any song that’s simple and catchy and it doesn’t get any simpler than:  “Go Shorty, it’s your birthday we gone party like its your birthday.” After releasing several hot mixtapes on the streets, I think this track may have certified 50 Cent as a legit maker. Dr. Dre’s beat had such a perfect bounce that folks that it was meant for Detox. “What Up Gangsta” – The follow up track after the intro on Get Rich Or Die Trying was the perfect aggressive track to start the album off.  The beat dropped with such force that you knew he meant business from the jump. What makes this one of 50′s  best is that he basically laid it down that he wanted problems. Hate him or love him you would not ignore him! “Many Men” (Wish Death) – The song told the story of how and why people hate on another individual working hard to get to the top. This worked so well because 50 Cent was an underdog, but ironically he is the one now looking to end careers. “I Get Money” –  During the battle with Kanye West on who would sell the most records, this was the track that put life into the Curtis album. The shocker was getting Diddy and Jay-z on the remix, one of 50 Cents many great ideas,  along with sampling the classic Audio Two’s “Top Billing.” There was also some controversy about the beat being extremely similar to Cassidy’s  2005 hit “I’m A Hustler.” “Candy Shop “- Featuring Olivia (who was once the first lady of G-Unit) has to be 50 Cent’s most commercial song to date.  When I say commercial, I mean the sound had to be the most pop 50 Cent has ever gone. The chart topper helped 50 Cent sell over 1 million albums during its first week release of  ”The Massacre.” “Window Shopper” – off the “Get Rich or Die Tryin” soundtrack is where 50 Cent got to do what he does best;  stuntin on em and taunting people. “How 2 Rob” – featuring D-Dot aka The Mad Rapper was what got 50 Cent noticed in the public and industry. I think any song about how to rob actual rappers and r&b singers would get attention, but 50 Cent caused a frenzy with this one by naming names of real people. A few people even made response records. “21 Questions” is one of 50 Cent’s best ballads. As soon as that Barry White guitar lick kicks in you know where things are headed. Yes, his first album was probably his best but this was a big reason why. “Ayo Technology ” featuring Justin Timberlake also helped keep the album “Curtis” alive after releasing several singles that did not grab the attention of the people. “Wangsta”- The second single off the 8 Mile soundtrack coining the term “Wangsta” as someone who does a lot of fronting, who isn’t what they claim to be. The hood began using this term for a while and some people possibly still do. Word was this term was created to describe his rival Ja Rule. Ashthon Jones on American Idol Exit: God Will Hook Me Up…

Yes, Ashthon Jones became the first season 10 finalist to be eliminated from American Idol . But don’t feel sorry for this aspiring artist. “I feel like it was all in God’s timing, and He has something better for me,” she tells E! News.” I’m not saying American Idol was not [good], but something great is what I feel in my spirit right now, and I can’t wait to see what is going to happen.” Jones did break down upon receiving news of her ousting, but assures fans: “I left those tears on the stage,” concluding: “That strength has nothing to do with me. That strength comes from God. I know a lot of people don’t believe or don’t understand what I’m saying, but that strength comes from up above.” Heading into the top 12 performance show on Wednesday, we’ll take the early favorites and ask again: Who do you think will win?

Sarah Palin "Gritting Teeth" Over Game Change Film

In a sitdown with Fox News, Sarah Palin discussed the upcoming HBO film Game Change , based on the ’08 Presidential race. Julianne Moore will play Palin . She doesn’t sound too happy about that – or the film in general. “Well, I am all about job creation, and I guess I could provide some of these gals who pretend like they’re me some job security,” she joked (we think). Sarah Palin Talks Game Change That was funny and light-hearted enough, but the strange thing is how bitter she seems about the film, in which she is but one of many players … “If they’re of the mind of spreading the wealth around,” she added, “perhaps they want to spring for one of my kids’ braces or something as they capitalize on pretending to be me … I’ll just grit my teeth and bear whatever comes what may with that movie.” Is a movie about a historic election that crazy a concept? By that logic, The Social Network basically capitalized off Mark Zuckerberg, making him look like an arrogant swindler in the process in fact. He responded by donating $100 million to public schools in Newark, N.J. Just saying …

‘Captain America’ Villain Red Skull Photo Hits The Web

Plus: Director Joe Johnston talks to Entertainment Weekly about the politics of Captain America and ‘The Avengers.’ By Kara Warner Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Marvel Entertainment For all the “Captain America” fans who have been excited by the teaser trailer and magazine features , there have been just as many complaints about the fact that not much has yet been seen of the film’s chief and formidable villain, Red Skull. Luckily for those folks, Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at genre-film favorite Hugo Weaving all red and scary-looking. EW also scored a meaty interview with the film’s director, Joe Johnston, in which he addresses a wide range of subjects, including why a superhuman can be sympathetic, the politics of Captain America (played by Chris Evans) and how much he had to think about Joss Whedon’s spin-off film “The Avengers.” “What I like is he’s not a superhero in the true sense of the word,” Johnston explained of how Steve Rogers/ Captain America is unlike Superman or Spider-Man. “He becomes a superhero but doesn’t have any superpowers. He is just the best possible human specimen. Imagine the fastest, strongest Olympian athlete. Add 30 percent. That’s Steve Rogers.” Regarding the character’s historic and politically charged past (the first issue of the Marvel comic featured the now-famous cover image of Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw), Johnston said that although his film is indeed a period piece, it isn’t a “flag waver.” “He was created as a propaganda tool, but he soon became much more than that,” Johnston told the magazine. “There are all these incarnations over the decades, but the film is not a flag waver. It’s about a guy who wants to do the right thing. And that transcends all nationalities and borders.” Finally, there has been much ado over the fact that several characters who have and will have their own standalone films will come together for Whedon’s highly anticipated “Avengers” movie. “I really didn’t [think about it],” Johnston said. “Because this was a period film, because this was the origin story, I didn’t have to worry about ‘The Avengers,’ which was a present-day story,” he explained. “We have present-day bookends and bring Cap back at the end, and then I basically hand him off. And ‘The Avengers’ is its own thing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
