Future Looks Bright As Hottest Breakthrough Contender

MC began dominating Atlanta airwaves this summer with the help of big names like T.I. — vote in our Hottest poll now! By Steven Roberts Future Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News A few months ago, if you didn’t live in or near Atlanta, you would be hard-pressed to know who Future was. However, if you did live in or near Atlanta, you be hard-pressed not to hear one of his songs on the radio every five minutes with “Magic,” “Ain’t No Way Around It,” “Go Harder” and “Never Been This High,” to name a few. Now, he’s getting national recognition as a contender for MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC . Future was the hook man on YC ‘s “Racks,” which was probably the most infectious track of the first part of this year. However, the rest of the country got the memo in early July when Drake hopped on a remix of the ATL-ien’s “Tony Montana.” The song features Future rhyming in a faux accent as if he were the beloved upstart Cuban drug lord. Drizzy not only adds a verse, but he seemingly adds his stamp of approval to what Future has been building. While their relationship seems to have soured , it hasn’t stopped Future from spreading his name. The MC dropped a number of mixtapes this year (including Dirty Sprite, True Story, Streetz Calling and Free Bricks with Gucci Mane), which helped him build his base and dominate the ATL airwaves. Even Atlanta stalwarts like Gucci, Young Jeezy, T.I. and Big Boi jumped on tracks with the Astronaut Kid to help maintain their own buzz in the city. At the same time, their co-signs helped him get nationwide attention. Future also comes from a sort of hip-hop royalty. He is the cousin of Organized Noize’s Rico Wade. Organized Noize have produced tracks for the likes of Outkast, Ludacris and TLC. It’s a part of Atlanta’s iconic Dungeon Family, making Future a second-generation Dungeon Family member. While their members are known for their lyrical prowess, few people would put Future in their weight class. But he promised his mixtapes weren’t a reflection of what fans could expect on his debut album, Pluto. Only time will tell how bright his future truly is. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Future (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday (December 13) when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Mac Miller Is Wiz Khalifa’s Hottest Breakthrough MC

‘Mac gotta win that for sure,’ Wiz tells ‘RapFix Live’ of fellow Pittsburgh rapper. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: Al Pereira/ WireImage Wiz Khalifa knows a thing or two about breaking through to the mainstream. In 2010, the Taylor Gang general was voted by fans as MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010. He beat out J. Cole and Nicki Minaj and went on to release his debut album, Rolling Papers, then had rap fans across the word singing his hits “Black and Yellow” and “On My Level.” When it comes to the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC competition, Wiz is in support of all 10 of the nominees, but he does have his favorite. In a pool that includes A$AP Rocky, Future, Freddie Gibbs, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar , Machine Gun Kelly , Meek Mill , Lil Twist and Roscoe Dash, Khalifa is picking his Rostrum Records labelmate and fellow Pittsburgh MC to take it all: Mac Miller . “Those are all great names, and I’ve met all of those kids — well, some of them aren’t kids,” Wiz told “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “But I gotta go with the hometown, Mac.” Mac Miller, like Khalifa , hails from Pittsburgh. He made a name for himself with his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S. and its 2011 follow-up, Best Day Ever. In 2011, Mac toured the country, sold out shows and saw his “Donald Trump” single chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller pulled off his biggest feat, however, when his independent debut, Blue Slide Park, became the #1 album in the country. “Mac gotta win that for sure, ’cause he did the numbers, he did the tour, he got the fans, he’s got the merch,” Khalifa said. “All those guys that you named definitely had successful and fun years, but I gotta go with my hometown, Malcolm.” Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before concluding Tuesday when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. For Discussion: Michael Jackson’s Bodyguards Say He Wouldn’t Have Wanted His Friend Conrad Murray On Trial

Here’s an interesting take on this whole Conrad Murray trial. Two of Michael Jackson’s former bodyguards are speaking out in defense of Dr. Conrad Murray, saying he is not a criminal. It was something heard from Murray’s defense team: Other doctors provided Jackson with powerful prescription drugs, and Murray was being blamed for Jackson’s dependency to those other drugs. Now Javon Beard and Bill Whitfield are saying the same thing. “We know if he was alive, he would not want Dr. Conrad Murray to be on trial,” Beard said. “There’s no way in hell that he wanted to kill Michael Jackson. Why would he kill his paycheck?” Jackson’s former bodyguards shared new details about Jackson’s relationship with Murray. “The relationship that him and Mr. Conrad Murray had on our watch, they were more friends,” Beard said. Murray is on trial for involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say his negligence caused Jackson’s death, but Jackson’s former bodyguards say the testimony has unfairly vilified Murray. “Seeing how only Dr. Murray is being pointed out, I look at the trial and see, you know, that courtroom would not be big enough to hold everyone in it that we feel would be accountable,” Whitfield said. In an interview with an ABC reporter in Las Vegas, Beard and Whitfield both said they’re convinced that someone other than Murray was medicating Jackson during the daytime to help him prepare for what was a demanding rehearsal schedule. “Dr. Murray may have helped Mr. Jackson sleep. We certainly believe that there were certainly other doctors that helped him stay up,” Whitfield said. “It’s way bigger than Dr. Conrad Murray,” Beard said. “That’s no question in our minds.” What these guys are basically saying that, as hard as it may be for his billions of fans to hear, Michael Jackson was just like any other addict with enough money to always be able to find someone to say yes. About the Time Kal Penn Took Two Years Off to Work for President Obama

“There was a selflessness about it. He was there for the right reasons. He believed in the candidate, he believed in the cause. He was approachable, he didn’t put on any airs. And he loved to work hard…. We’d take him to five, six college campuses a day, and he’d never complain…. You could have asked him to do anything — go lick some stamps, he would’ve done that.” Spurred into public service during the Writer’s Strike, Kal Penn (who’s back on screens next week in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas ) took a mid-level outreach gig in the Obama administration that, at one point, caused his agent to freak out: “What are you doing? The guy is down 30 points in the polls. It’s not cute anymore!” [ L.A. Times ]

Jesus Take The Wheel: 48 People Shot, Including 8 Killed, In NYC Over Labor Day Weekend

SMDH. Gunfire repeatedly rocked the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn yesterday — even while Mayor Bloomberg marched nearby — as the city’s terrifying epidemic of shootings over the Labor Day weekend grew steadily worse. The orgy of violence — including eight fatalities among the 48 gunshot victims — seemed to follow the revelers everywhere, from the parade route to nearby fast-food joints and even to their own homes. In all, nine of the shooting victims were hit at or near the parade, the annual Caribbean-themed festival in Crown Heights, where a gunman had fired into the air only blocks from where Bloomberg had just begun marching. “[The gunman] shouted something, then ‘boom!’ Everyone ducked,” said a witness, Marlene Anthony, adding that the young thug was standing at Rockaway Parkway and Clarkson Avenue – just blocks from the parade staging area. “It was a bad mix of alcohol, ignorance and a fool with a gun who tries to ruin the fun of the parade.” The gunman, Devon Stevens, 25, jumped into a livery cab, but went only a couple blocks before hopping out on East 94th Street at Winthrop Street, where he ditched the gun as cops gave chase, authorities said. Hours after the parade ended, an elderly woman was killed in the crossfire of a melee between cops and a gunman. The parade had gotten off to a rocky start at 6 a.m., when a nearby McDonald’s — packed with 100 early risers prepping for the festivities — was the site of a senseless shooting. A customer Kenneth Beggs, 44, bumped into a man entering the Empire Boulevard eatery and apologized. But Anthony Carruthers, 28, allegedly refused to let the incident go and pumped bullets into Beggs’ legs. “The bullet shattered the door, so everyone ran out the other door,” said one McDonald’s cook. Tempers flared after parade ended, as well, with one reveler shot in front of a crowd on Eastern Parkway. A group of six or seven men had pummeled the victim on the ground and then an attacker pulled out a handgun and shot him in the leg. Before the gunman fled, he grabbed a pot of steaming rice from a food vendor and tossed it onto an onlooker. Cops tackled the gunman. His victim is expected to survive. The shocking 72-hour shooting tally came as police revealed that the number of people who took a bullet in the past week had skyrocketed. For the week ending Sunday, a whopping 98 people had been shot — nearly twice the 53 shot during the same week last year, the NYPD said. Those injured last week were involved in 72 incidents, compared to 40 shoot-ups in the same week in 2010, according to the Police Department. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that although the number of shootings so far this year is fewer when compared to a decade ago, the spree of gunfire over the weekend is “obviously . . . cause for concern. “We’re doing everything we can do,” added Kelly, who cited the NYPD’s shifting of resources to target guns on the streets, including boosting overtime. Some of the shootings were clearly “associated with the parade,” Kelly said. “Quite frankly, this is something that does happen with this parade.” Bloomberg said, “It was a bad weekend, no question about that . . . There’s just too many guns on the streets of this city. It’s a national problem . . . because it’s so easy to buy guns in other states, and just drive them in and sell them in the back of your car.” In all, at least 16 people were hit by bullets yesterday — 15 of them in Brooklyn. Wow. NYC has got to chill. Seriously. Source

Were You Watching: Was Imani Out Of Line Calling Draya “Worthless” On Basketball Wives L.A.?

This week’s “Angry Birds” aka Basketball Wives L.A. featured Laura Govan and Malaysia Pargo apologize for their trifling behavior fighting in a restaurant on the first episode. However not everyone was apologetic in the second episode — namely Draya who defended her days working the pole as no big deal after Imani questioned her morals. “Yeah, I showed my boobs for money — whoopty do” she added that maybe Imani’s boobs weren’t as nice as hers and that’s why she wasn’t comfortable showing them. The topic came up again in a session with a life coach (after the girls decide Draya needs to be rescued from her immoral lifestyle) after a game where each woman was asked to use an adjective to describe their peers, when Draya’s adjectives are read they are mostly negative — Sneaky, Combative, Animated and Worthless… the game’s supposed to be anonymous but Jackie quickly owns up to her adjective and the others follow suit leaving Imani to admit she called Draya worthless for reasons she doesn’t want to go into in this forum. The last scene of the show is the girls showing up for Draya’s party — and she isn’t very nice. In the preview for next week’s episode we see Imani and Draya have a sit down where Draya defends the stories about her son’s neglect by saying he’s never been taken away from her. At this point we’ve all heard the story of Draya leaving her son home alone to heat up microwave meals — so between that and her unapologetic attitude about her stripper past — is she really worthless? Or is this something only time will tell? View This Poll

Question Of The Day: Would You Support A Black Republican Presidential Candidate As Much As You Supported Obama??

Businessman Herman Cain is becoming very popular amongst the people, but could he earn YOUR vote? Bolstered by support from his loyal radio talk-show audience and Tea Party backers, businessman Herman Cain has revved up mainstream conservatives, rising recently to third place in a poll of voters in Iowa, the leadoff caucus state. In his pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination, Cain’s views on the economy and his fiery delivery have resonated with some in the GOP. His campaign has also been marked by controversy, including his comment that he would not want a Muslim bent on killing Americans in his administration. Just this week, Cain accused comedian Jon Stewart of disliking him because he is an “American black conservative.” Already losing some of his cachet to Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann, Cain, the lone African-American GOP candidate, is trying to win over a party that hasn’t had a black nominee. Sidestepping race as an issue in his campaign may have helped him gain momentum in recent weeks, but whether he can turn vigor into votes will depend largely on voters’ ability to look past his skin color and perceive him as a serious candidate. Here is what some people who support Mr. Cain. “He’s fresh, he’s outspoken,” said Debbie Dooley, head of the Georgia Tea Party Patriots. “If they hear him speak, he usually wins them over. With him, what you see is what you get. People like that.” “He doesn’t believe in the whole business of race being a defining factor of anything in this country,” said William Boone, a political science professor at Clark Atlanta University, which is predominantly black. “He says, ‘If you work hard, you will make it. Look at me.’ “There’s a buzz on the street among activists. People like him; they want to know more about him. That’s sort of living the dream as far as a presidential candidate goes. He’s getting the kind of reaction every candidate imagines.” This all sounds like glowing praise, but the question still remains can he get people to believe in him how they believe in Barack Obama, and show up at the polls on voting day. How do you feel about a black republican candidate? Source

Did Chris Brown’s Ex Really Leak Pictures Of His Schlong?

Breezy’s package landed on the internet yesterday afternoon and no the carpet doesn’t match the drapes! The nude photograph, which appears on an adult-only website was allegedly leaked by an ex. One Of Chris Brown’s Ex Chicks drops off & leaks Breezy’s bathroom sexting pix! Its not clear if the girl is planning to drop anymore. The photo was obviously taken recently, since Chris’ hair is blonde in the picture. We’d almost be inclined to say Breezy let this one loose himself, since his new album F.A.M.E is due to be released on March 22nd. But lets be honest — this isn’t the most flattering way to show you what he’s working with. View This Poll online survey
