What in the fawk is going on, Tibet and China??? A Buddhist nun in southwest China has died after setting herself on fire, the 11th Tibetan — and second nun — to self-immolate since March. The death of the nun, identified as Qiu Xiang, was reported by state-run Xinhua and confirmed by exile groups. The 35-year old set herself on fire at a road crossing in Dawu County, in the Ganzi region of Sichuan Province, the South China Morning Post said, citing Xinhua. It was unclear why she killed herself, though Tibetan campaign groups say it was in protest against Chinese rule. But China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed the incident related to “pro-Tibetan independence forces” overseas. “Everyone knows that nowadays, except for the very few evil cults and extremist forces, all religions advocate respect for human life and oppose violence,” said spokesperson Hong Lei. “It is a challenge to the moral bottom line of all human beings if, instead of condemning the extreme act of self-immolation, some people are hyping or instigating it.” According to the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), which advocates Tibetan independence, Palden Choetso — Qiu’s Tibetan name — called for freedom and the return from exile of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, as she was burning. London-based Free Tibet also confirmed the incident. Her body was then taken by fellow nuns into the Ganden Choeling nunnery in Tawu, the ICT said. Six of the 11 Tibetans — all monks or former monks — who have set themselves ablaze died from their injuries. Most of the suicide attempts occurred in Aba Prefecture and the Kirti monastery, also in Sichuan, which has become a focal point for ethnic Tibetans angry at the erosion of their culture. Last month, a nun in Ngaba County, Sichuan Province, became the first Tibetan woman known to have killed herself. Free Tibet said Tenzin Wangmo, 20, died outside the Dechen Chokorling Nunnery. The State Administration for Religious Affairs in Beijing told CNN they were not aware of the incident. Activists and exiled Tibetans say the disturbing acts reflect an increasingly repressive environment under Beijing’s control. “The incidents are a clear indication of the genuine grievances of the Tibetans and their sense of deep resentment and despair over the prevailing conditions in Tibet,” said new Tibetan leader in exile, Lobsang Sangay, in quotes carried by Free Tibet. “It is therefore of the utmost urgency that every possible effort be made to address the underlying root causes of Tibetan grievances and resentment.” Yikes. Wives are getting ruthless and creative when killing their husbands these days: A Los Altos woman pleaded not guilty on Thursday to stabbing her estranged husband in what a prosecutor describes as a carefully plotted attempt to kill. Laura Jean Wenke, 50, is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun. San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wenke carefully plotted the attack. On Sept. 15, Wenke dressed herself in coveralls, rubber boots and bubble wrap and she went to his office in Redwood City. Her husband was working at his computer at Wenke Construction when his wife attacked, Wagstaffe said. Wenke shot a stun gun into her estranged husband’s side, stabbed him in the neck and stabbed his chest while he was still sitting at his computer, according to investigators. The husband called 911 and police officers said they found him outside the building bleeding in the parking lot. His wife was still in his office, her bubble wrap outfit streaked with blood, when officers arrested her. The husband survived the attack. Wenke is currently in jail without bail. Prosecutors said Wenke attacked her husband because she was livid that he had a new girlfriend. The Los Altos couple filed for divorce in August 2010 and was separated at the time of the suspected stabbing. Bubble wrap, though??? Here’s an interesting take on this whole Conrad Murray trial. Two of Michael Jackson’s former bodyguards are speaking out in defense of Dr. Conrad Murray, saying he is not a criminal. It was something heard from Murray’s defense team: Other doctors provided Jackson with powerful prescription drugs, and Murray was being blamed for Jackson’s dependency to those other drugs. Now Javon Beard and Bill Whitfield are saying the same thing. “We know if he was alive, he would not want Dr. Conrad Murray to be on trial,” Beard said. “There’s no way in hell that he wanted to kill Michael Jackson. Why would he kill his paycheck?” Jackson’s former bodyguards shared new details about Jackson’s relationship with Murray. “The relationship that him and Mr. Conrad Murray had on our watch, they were more friends,” Beard said. Murray is on trial for involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say his negligence caused Jackson’s death, but Jackson’s former bodyguards say the testimony has unfairly vilified Murray. “Seeing how only Dr. Murray is being pointed out, I look at the trial and see, you know, that courtroom would not be big enough to hold everyone in it that we feel would be accountable,” Whitfield said. In an interview with an ABC reporter in Las Vegas, Beard and Whitfield both said they’re convinced that someone other than Murray was medicating Jackson during the daytime to help him prepare for what was a demanding rehearsal schedule. “Dr. Murray may have helped Mr. Jackson sleep. We certainly believe that there were certainly other doctors that helped him stay up,” Whitfield said. “It’s way bigger than Dr. Conrad Murray,” Beard said. “That’s no question in our minds.” What these guys are basically saying that, as hard as it may be for his billions of fans to hear, Michael Jackson was just like any other addict with enough money to always be able to find someone to say yes. Isht is REAL in Nigeria… At least 67 people died in a wave of bombings and shootings carried out in northeast Nigeria overnight, officials said Saturday, as frightened mourners left their homes to begin burying their dead. A newspaper says a radical Muslim sect known locally as Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks and has promised to launch new assaults. The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record in Nigeria’s Muslim north, says Boko Haram spokesman Abul-Qaqa spoke to them Saturday and claimed the attacks that have killed at least 67 people in and around Damaturu and Maiduguri. The spokesman told the newspaper: “We will continue attacking federal government formations until security forces stop their excesses on our members and vulnerable civilians.” Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the local Hausa language, has waged an increasingly bloody sectarian fight against Nigeria’s weak central government The latest attacks centered around Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, Nigerian Red Cross official Ibrahim Bulama said. The attack started Friday with a car bomb exploding outside a three-story building used as a military office and barracks in the city, with many uniformed security agents dying in the blast, Bulama said. Gunmen then went through the town, blowing up a First Bank PLC branch and attacking at least three police stations and some churches, leaving them in rubble, he said. Gunfire continued through the night and gunmen raided the village of Potiskum near the capital as well, witnesses said, leaving at least two people dead there. President Obama and his Democratic allies made two key political missteps in recent years, according to former president Bill Clinton in a new book to be released Tuesday. First was not raising the federal debt ceiling in the first two years of the president’s term, when Democrats still had a majority in Congress, and then failing to devise an effective national campaign message during the midterm elections of 2010. Clinton also suggests, obliquely, that Obama’s criticism of Wall Street has been too harsh and counterproductive. The 42nd president periodically surfaces with cheerful tips on how he managed the economy and offers these observations in his book entitled “Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy.” The Washington Post obtained a copy of the book prior to its publication. The volume is dense with criticism of Republicans; it devotes substantial attention to what Clinton describes as the GOP’s relentless “antigovernment ideology,” which he identifies as the cause of the anemic economy, high unemployment and American inability to compete on the world stage. But the subtext of the book is that Obama has struggled, both to identify workable economic policies and to outmaneuver his Republican foes. “The Democrats did not counter the national Republican message with one of their own,” Clinton writes of the Democratic losses in 2010. “There was no national advertising campaign to explain and defend what they had done and to compare their agenda for the next two years with the GOP proposals.” He compares it with his own congressional defeats in 1994. The very existence of such a book by the former president — which Clinton says was inspired by the 2010 midterm losses — has produced some eye-rolling among senior Obama advisers, and is certain to spur a new round of unwelcome comparisons between the 1990s and today. Clinton mostly aligns himself with Obama on the big picture, arguing that the president did the right thing, or at least the best he could given the economy he inherited, with the stimulus package. He dismisses Republican notions, such as privatizing Medicare and Medicaid, and offers a blistering rebuke of Republican tax cuts, contrasting the George W. Bush era with his own. “The antigovernment movement’s most cherished conviction is that we can’t raise taxes on the ‘job creators,’ ” Clinton writes. “The biggest problem with their argument is that we tried it their way for twenty of the last thirty years, and their strategy of using blanket tax cuts for high-income individuals didn’t work.” Thoughts??
