The Great Harry Potter Liveblog Epilogue: Deathly Hallows Diary

Having completed my two-day crash course in the Harry Potter franchise (with a decidedly much better second day than the first) it was time to let my newfound mild knowledge of the Potterverse to be put to the test: It was time to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in the theater.

Daniel Radcliffe Sees Hope After Gay Teen Suicides

‘Deathly Hallows’ star tells MTV News that tragic recent events have given way to ‘more publicity’ and ‘more awareness.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Daniel Radcliffe has long proven to be a dedicated activist when it comes to crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. He taped a public-service announcement for the Trevor Project and has spoken out on issues ranging from bullying to the importance of acceptance. The 21-year-old actor tells MTV News he’s watched in horror as a wave of gay teen suicides has swept the country, but he sees some cause for hope in the wake of these tragedies. “The attention and the more publicity and the more awareness that can be raised by everybody — it is such a good cause and such an important thing,” the “Harry Potter” star said. Radcliffe has also been pleased to see how messages conveyed by campaigns like “Love is Louder” and “It Gets Better” have cropped up in recent weeks in response to the suicides, transcending matters of sexuality to encompass all of those who’ve experienced persecution. “What’s interesting to me is it has taken on a wider meaning than just the Trevor Project and just people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered,” he explained. “It’s taken on, for everyone who has ever felt victimized or ostracized by the people in their class or in their community, it’s taken on a wider meaning, which I think is amazing.” The Trevor Project was inspired by the story of a gay teen who attempted to take his own life, and Radcliffe is heartened to see similar tragedy-into-opportunity activism springing forth from recent events. “It is, I think, indicative of the spirit of the organization that is the Trevor Project, that out of such tragic circumstances as we’ve seen over the last few months, they are managing to push forward to a brighter solution to this problem,” he said. Do you think initiatives like “It Gets Better” and “Love Is Louder” are helping to spread awareness? Tell us in the comments. Emma Watson Recalls Nearly Quitting ‘Harry Potter’

‘I would have been public enemy #1,’ ‘Deathly Hallows’ star says of backlash if she’d quit to pursue college. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson Photo: MTV News Could someone other than Emma Watson have played Hermione Granger ? The mere thought likely gives devoted “Potter”-philes heart palpitations, but it became a distinct possibility when the actress’ contract came up for renewal in 2006 during production on “The Order of the Phoenix.” Watson was firmly committed to continuing her education — not at Hogwarts but in the real world — and the schedule for the forthcoming “Potter” flicks simply wouldn’t allow her to pursue her studies. Dropping out of the franchise became a distinct possibility, as devastating to the fan community as that would have been. “I would have been public enemy #1, I think, if I hadn’t continued,” Watson recently told MTV News. “I did think about that. “I always try and make decisions in my life based on what’s right for me and I just try and be true to myself,” she added. “It was mainly to do with scheduling and I had a real fight on my hands to ensure that I was able to go to university and I was able to sit my A-levels, because the schedule they handed to me didn’t really allow for any of that and I just wasn’t prepared to let it go.” From ’06 into the next year, rumors abounded that she would in fact drop out, forcing Warner Bros. to recast Hermione. But by the time filming on “Half-Blood Prince” kicked off in fall ’07, Watson was back on set. Why? The studio reconfigured the entire shoot. “They essentially moved the ‘Harry Potter’ film schedule around my exam dates, which was amazing,” she told us. “It all worked out.” Watson ended up enrolling at Brown University in Rhode Island and was subsequently able to shoot the two-part finale of “Deathly Hallows.” “I feel very lucky,” she said. “Warner Bros. has been very supportive of me keeping this education thing going. I’m very grateful.” Can you imagine another actress playing Hermione in the “Potter” franchise? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Dividing Point Revealed

First movie will end ‘at about Chapter 24 of the book,’ according to upcoming article in Entertainment Weekly. By Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” Photo: Warner Bros. Given that the novel clocks in at 759 pages and 36 chapters, not to mention a controversial flash-forward epilogue, there’s little question that the film adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” needed extra legroom to properly stretch itself. As a result, Warner Bros. made the fan-supported decision to split the final installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise into two movies, but one question still plagues Potterites everywhere: At what moment in the story will the films split up ? It would seem that the answer is upon us, as “Harry Potter” fan site Muggle Net has come across what appears to be scanned pages of a “Deathly Hallows” preview article from an upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly. In the article, it’s clearly stated that the November-releasing first installment of “Deathly Hallows” concludes “at about Chapter 24 of the book, with Voldemort gaining possession of the Elder Wand, one of the three Deathly Hallows that allow the bearer to conquer death.” By all accounts, it appears that the scans are legitimate, potentially putting an end to countless hours of fan speculation about where the two movies would diverge. In the article, Warner Bros. Entertainment President Alan Horn spoke about splitting the last “Harry Potter” novel into two films, acknowledging that there were certainly commercial reasons driving the final decision. “I don’t want to be disingenuous or dishonest about this,” Horn told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s no question that Warner Bros. will make more money with two films than they would have with one. But we also never, ever would have done this if [author J.K. Rowling] had not endorsed it and if we didn’t feel that we were providing a better finale, with a more full sense of closure. We just respect and love the books too much for that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Has Employed ‘All My Family,’ Emma Thompson Jokes

Thompson’s sister, Sophie, is also in ‘Deathly Hallows,’ which was ‘incredible’ to shoot, Emma tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News Emma Thompson has been so busy with her “Nanny McPhee” films (she wrote and starred in both) that her visit to the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” set was very brief. When MTV News caught up with the actress to talk about “Nanny McPhee Returns,” Thompson said stepping into the shoes of her kooky “Potter” character, Professor Trelawney, for the last time was short but sweet. “They were very quick,” she admitted of her two days on set. “I just had to do a bit of waving of a wand and a bit of ‘ooooo-ing’ over dead people, because of course they just had to fit absolutely everyone in.” Thompson said the guest-actor-heavy shooting schedule felt like a “conveyor belt of characters, as this extraordinary machine came to its end.” Still, Thompson said she made the most of her “Potter” time and was able to reconnect with friends/co-stars she hadn’t seen in a while. “It was incredible to see everyone and just sort of quickly say hello and goodbye.” When we mentioned that it seemed like every working actor in the U.K. has appeared in at least one “Potter” film, Thompson heartily agreed. “Absolutely everyone in equity has been in it,” Thompson said of the franchise’s lengthy cast list. “Including all my family, practically. My sister just finished. I don’t know what the name of her character is; she’s got a major role in this last one.” (Thompson’s sister Sophie plays Ministry of Magic employee/ Proper Use of Magic enforcer Mafalda Hopkirk.) Thompson revealed that she has seen her sister in action, via a photo of Sophie as Mafalda, with Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) himself. “I’ve got a photo of her with Daniel dragging her off somewhere … so I don’t know what [they’re doing]; I haven’t seen it yet.” What scene do you think is in Thompson’s photo? Daniel Radcliffe To Star In ‘The Woman In Black’

‘Harry Potter’ actor will lead cast of thriller based on Susan Hill’s 1983 ghost story. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Although his “Harry Potter” duties are not quite behind him — “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” parts 1 and 2 open, respectively, in November 2010 and July 2011 — superstar Daniel Radcliffe is already lining up work. His post-Potter plans now include three projects that, like “Potter,” are book adaptations, as it was announced on Monday (July 19) that Radcliffe will lead the cast of “The Woman in Black,” based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel. Radcliffe will also return to Broadway for a revival in spring 2011 of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (from Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same name) and recently signed on to star in a remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” due in 2012 and derived from Erich Maria Remarque’s beloved novel. In “The Woman,” a thriller to be directed by James Watkins (“Eden Lake”), Radcliffe will play a young lawyer named Arthur Kipps who’s dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client’s affairs. He works from her creaky old house and, according to the studio’s press release, soon discovers the nearby town “is held hostage by the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.” While Radcliffe’s upcoming endeavors have the based-on-a-book aspect in common, his lineup is actually very diverse: The young star seems determined to follow up his “Potter” credits with work that will show him to be a serious actor.
