When they work, found footage films are testaments to the power of a limited perspective. Features like The Blair Witch Project , REC and Cloverfield get juice out of the fact that we’re not able to see or know more than the characters on screen. They use a gloss of the intentionally clumsy — jittery camerawork, lower quality footage, mundane dialogue — to allow a story to invade from an unexpected angle. They require cleverness in concept and, more importantly, in construction, particularly when the found footage flick in question is of the horror genre, as so many of them are; there’s no easier way to lose your audience than to make them wonder why, when such frightening things are allegedly happening, your characters are still bothering to roll tape. On the plus side, they’re a way to hide your monster (or witch, or demon, or alien) from view for longer than is usually allowed a more standard film — and the monster we imagine is usually much scarier than the one we finally see on screen.
Vienna Girardi is in this for the money. The former winner of The Bachelor and fiancee of Jake Pavelka has ZERO qualms about admitting that her second stint on reality TV is financially motivated. “I said no at first,” she told The Huffington Post about coming on Bachelor Pad , adding that she only agreed to be on the summer show on one condition. “They told me Jake wouldn’t be,” she said. “They clued me in a few days before we started filming, but by that point I was all packed and ready to go.” Vienna need not worry about wearing a life preserver. Jake was voted off the episode before last, but not before three weeks of fireworks between himself, Vienna and her current boyfriend, Kasey Kahl. Vienna Girardi admits having Jake Pavelka around was “uncomfortable” but says she and Kasey had fun and are friends with many Bachelor Pad stars. In fact, it Erica Rose that encouraged her nose job . “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while,” Girardi said of her new schnozz, adding that she talked about it with Rose while filming the show. “A week later, I was in Texas” to have the job done. Girardi debuted her new nose in August, but does not think that she will be going back under the knife anytime soon. “No, I’m done,” she said. As for Girardi and Kahl, viewers still don’t know how far the power couple makes it in the game, but things are definitely moving fast for them. The couple recently moved in together , but should the day come that Kahl gets down on bended knee, don’t expect to see the moment on ABC. “I had said I didn’t want him to propose on the show,” she said when asked about a ridiculous scene showing Kahl giving her a promise ring. Vienna and Kasey get freaky on Bachelor Pad . Though we won’t see Girardi get engaged on TV for the second time, she and Kahl haven’t ruled out returning to reality TV. There’s a shocker. “We’ve talked about it,” she said regarding appearing on reality TV on a Vienna and Kasey show after Bachelor Pad . “We’re not against it.” She may have competition there. Pavelka told Ryan Seacrest he’d consider appearing on The Bachelor a second time, “but not right away.” Hey, Brad Womack just went 0-for-2. Why not Jake Pavelka? Vienna won’t be watching if so. “Absolutely not,” she said.

First Lady Michelle Obama graces the cover of Essence magazine October issue with a revealing interview that highlights the First Lady’s commitment to women and girls around the world. For the annual October ‘Power Issue,’ First Lady Michelle Obama is also feted as one of the world’s most influential Black women on the magazine’s ’2011 Power List.’ Check out some excerpts from the article below: On needing her girlfriends : “Women energize me. My husband is terrific. He is my true partner. Spending time with him is key…. But it’s also important for us as women to find each other. And there’s that natural reenergizing that happens when women get together. We kind of hold each other up.” On finding balance and teaching it to her daughters: “If we don’t have the energy, we can’t pass it on. I learned it from watching my own mother (Marian Robinson) not invest in herself, for example. She’s starting to do that. But she came from the tradition of family first. She wouldn’t even go to the hairdresser on a regular basis. I want to show my girls that it is perfectly fine to invest in yourself and to start to do it early, embrace it and not feel guilty about the time we put into ourselves.” The October issue is available on newsstands as of September 12, 2011. Want a quick way to really touch a woman’s nerve and make her see red? Tell her that her shoes look cheap and call her a “hoe”. At least that’s what shows like Bad Girls Club and Basketball Wives would lead you to believe when these terms are often thrown around as much as martinis. Search any message board for tags associated with Rihanna and Kim Kardashian and I’ll give you my first-born if you come across the word “hoe” less than five times. It really started to make me think, what’s in a name? Why do women feel like their primary weapon of choice in a girl fight is to scorn your enemy’s sexual behavior and fashion choices? And while we’re on the subject, what exactly makes a woman a “hoe”? One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a writer is that words can be as powerful or as weak as you make them. For example, while women of past generations would be offended by being referred to as a “b*tch” or the god-forbidden N-word, with time many have come to accept these words as terms of endearment and defend the casual use of words like these by saying that when the people who these terms were initially meant to offend then take those words and manipulate their definitions, the words are then stripped of their power. Nonetheless, there are people who stand on both sides of the debate and will most likely never come to a compromise. To be honest, I am not even sure which side I stand on, but as a writer I’m uncomfortable with the idea of making language ineffective and stripping words of their power. Hurricane Irene definitely blew big in coastal areas of North Carolina and Virginia — so big that nearly half a million homes have been left without electricity. Hurricane Irene so far has left about 438,000 utility customers without power in North Carolina and Virginia as line crews begin assessing storm damage, two of the region’s largest utilities said Saturday. Progress Energy Inc. reported around 250,000 customers without power concentrated in coastal North Carolina. Dominion Resources Inc. reported about 188,000 customers in northern North Carolina and southern Virginia without power. “We have begun feeling the effects, and there is more ahead,” said Karl Neddenien, a spokesman for Dominion. Utilities crews in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions such as Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. and Consolidated Edison Inc. are preparing as Hurricane Irene moves up the coast as a Category 1 storm carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. Unfortunately the power outages have not been the least of the devastation. Three deaths have already been reported from North Carolina. One person died in a vehicle crash in Pitt County, a man was killed in Nash County after a branch fell on him. Emergency officials there said he was crushed to death outside his home by a large tree limb blown down during high winds from Irene. Another person died in Onslow County on Thursday of a heart attack, as he was trying to board up his home. Source
The FDA reminds consumers to take precautions for storing water and ensuring the safety of their food and medical supplies for themselves and their pets during and after this week’s expected hurricane-related rain, possible flooding and power outages. Get Prepared, Make An Emergency Plan The agency also reminds consumers that it is important to have a plan in place for emergency medication and medical supplies for both people and animals. This is especially true for those with health concerns, particularly if the power goes out. In general, FDA encourages consumers to: Food • Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood water. If in doubt, throw it out. • Do not eat food packed in plastic, paper, cardboard, cloth and similar containers that have been water-damaged. • Discard food and beverage containers with screw-caps, snap lids, crimped caps (soda bottles), twist caps, flip tops and home canned foods, if they have come in contact with flood water. These containers cannot be disinfected. • Check to ensure that the freezer temperature is at or below 0 °F and the refrigerator is at or below 40 °F. • Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. • For more information, see Hurricanes and Floods: Key Tips for Consumers About Food and Water Safety http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm077029.htm and Power Outages: Key Tips for Consumers About Food and Water Safety http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm077023.htm Water • Area health departments will determine whether local tap water can be used for drinking. If the water cannot be used or is questionable, and bottled water is not available, then use the directions in the next bullet to purify it. • Boiling water will kill most types of disease-causing organisms that may be present. If the water is cloudy, filter it through clean cloths or allow it to settle and draw off the clear water for boiling. Boil the water for one minute, let it cool and store it in clean containers with covers. • For more information, see Food Safety for Consumers Returning Home After a Hurricane and/or Flooding http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm076993.htm Pets • If you have to leave your home, take your pet with you if at all possible. You are the best person to take care of your pet. • Pets should be contained in a carrier or on a leash. • Emergencies can make pets display unexpected or uncharacteristic behaviors. It may take several weeks before your pet’s behavior is back to normal. • Allow your pet plenty of time to rest and get used to new surroundings. Provide familiar toys, if possible. • For more information see Taking Care of Pets During a Disaster or Emergency http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/ucm047099.htm Essential Things To Keep In Your Bag When You Travel Drugs Exposed to Water • For lifesaving drugs exposed to water, when replacements may not be readily available, if the container is contaminated but the contents appear unaffected –if the pills are dry—the pills may be used until a replacement can be obtained. However, if the pill is wet it is contaminated and should be discarded. • Other drug products (pills, oral liquids, drugs for injections, inhalers, skin medications) —even those in their original containers—should be discarded if they have come into contact with flood or contaminated water. In the ideal setting, capsules, tablets, and liquids in drug containers with screw-top caps, snap lids, or droppers, should be discarded if they are contaminated. In addition, medications that have been placed in any alternative storage containers should be discarded if they have come in contact with flood or contaminated water. • For more information, see Safe Drug Use After a Natural Disaster http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/EmergencyPreparedness/ucm085200.htm Insulin Storage and Switching Between Products in an Emergency • As a general rule, insulin loses its potency according to the temperature it is exposed to and length of that exposure. Under emergency conditions, you might still need to use insulin that has been stored above 86 °F. Such extreme temperatures may cause insulin to lose potency, which could result in loss of blood glucose control over time. • In any case, you should try to keep insulin as cool as possible. Try to keep insulin away from direct heat and out of direct sunlight, but if you are using ice, also avoid freezing the insulin. • When properly stored insulin becomes available, discard and replace the insulin vials that have been exposed to these extreme conditions. • For more information see Information Regarding Insulin Storage and Switching Between Products in an Emergency http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/EmergencyPreparedness/ucm085213.htm Medical Devices • If you have a “life-supporting” or “life-sustaining” device that depends on electricity, you should contact your healthcare provider for information on how to maintain function in the event of a loss of power. • Keep your device and supplies clean and dry. If possible, notify your local Public Health Authority to request evacuation prior to adverse weather events. • For more information, see FDA Offers Tips about Medical Devices and Hurricane Disasters http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/EmergencySituations/ucm055987.htm Vaccines, Blood, Biologics • If the power goes out, make note of the time and keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. • When the power is restored, if possible, determine the temperature in the refrigerator or freezer before the temperature starts to go back down. • If the power outage continues, consider removing products from the refrigerator or freezer and packing them in ice or dry ice as appropriate. • If contact with flood water occurs, the product should be considered contaminated and should not be used. • For more information, see Impact of Severe Weather Conditions on Biological Products http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/ProductSecurity/ucm147243.htm Find more information for consumers and industry on all FDA-regulated products at http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm064572.htm
Big Jeff is definitely in charge of Big Brother house. Following Sunday’s commanding Head of Household win , he proceeded to win the veto as well, leaving himself with all the options and all the power. He acted like it, too, with a move that could come back to bite him, but more than likely defeated his opposing alliance for good. Only time will tell. THG recaps last night’s Big Brother episode below … Whatever you think of him personally, Jeff is very good at Big Brother . His #1 achievement is what he did the previous 2-3 weeks, shoring up quasi-pacts with Shelly, Adam and Rachel. This gives him quite an edge. Plus 7 . Daniele, meanwhile, seems like a bit of a lost puppy when she’s not in the driver’s seat. Minus only 3 , because she’s quieter about it than Rachel at least. Speaking of Boo-key’s girl, Rachel is dead set on vengeance. Minus 15 for bad strategy, but Plus 5 because her attempts to bug Daniele do seem to work. Plus 6 for Jordan’s oddly sexy humilitard-removing striptease-thing. Plus 7 for Jeff and Jordan’s debate over how to pronounce “mischievous.” Man, Zingbot 3000’s voice is so annoying, but it did have some good lines, and made everyone quite uncomfortable. Net positive, we’d say, of about Plus 6 . Even ZB was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Rachel material. It settled with “Every other word is just the F-word! Fiance! Fiance! ZZZZIIING! ” Plus 5 . Plus 3 , because the Zingbot is actually less robotic than Porsche. Zingbot to Dani: “Do you own a car…or are you still riding on your daddy’s coattails?!?! ” A prescient zzzzzzing, because she looked lost this week, and you can’t blame it all on the slop. Out of power, she just couldn’t rally. Minus 4 . Okay, it’s starting to just seem creepy. Go away now? Minus 4 . As soon as the veto competition was revealed to involve building something (a new Zingbot), you knew Porsche had no shot. Minus 9 for utter uselessness. Even more useless? Her attempts to talk game! Minus 8 . With Adam and Shelly also tanking, it came down to Dani and Jeff, and the big guy won it going away. Plus 3 for backing up his savviness with results. The true brilliance of Jeff is his ability to see – and play – all the angles. He took Porsche off the block and put up Dani while cementing his relationships with everyone BUT Dani and Kalia. Tough line to walk as HoH, but he did. Plus 10 . Can Dani get Adam, Shelly and Porsche to oust Kalia? She’ll need to do stay, and her back is up against the wall. Don’t count her out … yet. Wash . Tonight’s episode is a double elimination, meaning if Dani/Kalia wins HoH, they could put up Jeff and Jordan. If Rachel wins, Dani and Kalia might be going home by 10 p.m. If Porsche or Adam wins … LOL. Sorry, we tried. Plus 4 . EPISODE TOTAL: +13. SEASON TOTAL: +54. Who’s going home tonight on Big Brother?
