Who Is ‘The Voice’? Tony, Juliet, Jermaine And Chris Duke It Out

Final four also perform with their judges before the winner is chosen Tuesday night. By John Mitchell Jermaine Paul performs on “The Voice” Photo: NBC The final night of competition proved intense and tough to call Monday night (May 7) on “The Voice” as rocker Juliet Simms, singer/songwriter Tony Lucca, former R&B backup singer Jermaine Paul and classically trained Chris Mann brought everything they had to the stage hoping to land enough votes to take home the title in Tuesday’s live grand finale. But it wasn’t all business, as each of the final four also took the stage with their respective coach for a series of powerhouse performances that showcased the onstage chemistry born from both compatibility — looking at you, chill rocker boys Adam Levine and Lucca and vocal dynamos Christina Aguilera and Mann — and unlikely pairings (think country crooner Blake Shelton and Paul and funky soul man Cee Lo and Simms). First up was Team Blake’s Jermaine, who wasn’t taking any chances with his song choice, going straight for a mid-’90s jam that has practically become an R&B standard, R. Kelly’s inspirational “I Believe I Can Fly.” His simple, clean and emotional performance — Adam called it “elegant” — earned plenty of praise, with Christina admitting, “That song was made for you. You came out classy and positive.” Blake couldn’t have been more pleased, adding, “My heart is in my throat right now. I’ve heard that song a million times, but I don’t feel like I’ve ever really heard it before tonight.” As a surprise thank you to their coaches, the final four also hit the stage to sing one of their mentor’s biggest hits. Juliet Simms, looking great with newly raven locks and powering through throat issues that Cee Lo revealed at the top of the show, was up first with a rocking take on Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” She was followed later in the show by Chris Mann singing Christina’s emotional ballad “The Voice Within,” Paul’s clean take on Shelton’s country hit “God Gave Me You” and Tony’s faithful rendition of Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe.” When it came time for the first coach/contestant pairing, Christina and Chris found a song that was so clearly recorded specifically for them to sing live on “The Voice” tonight, we wonder if Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion had a crystal ball with them when they hit the studio. That song was “The Prayer,” and Xtina hit it on the nose during the rehearsal montage, saying, “We connected so perfectly together, it was effortless.” And they did, of course; the two were meant to perform together. The next competitive performance came from Team Adam’s Tony Lucca, who Adam admitted needed “another moment” (like his rock remix of Britney Spears’ ” … Baby One More Time” a few weeks ago) to increase his shot at winning the competition. He found it in a rockabilly reimagining of Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” complete with a harmonica and washboard (like you’d use for laundry) for accompaniment. Unsurprisingly, Christina, who has taken issue with her former “Mickey Mouse Club” co-star often in the past, found fault in Lucca’s song choice, saying the B-word that Lucca muted from the song (but which we all know is there) was disrespectful to women. Adam was smartly ready for Christina to slag on Lucca, explaining that the term was more of a metaphor for all the things that drag you down. Indeed, Christina’s criticism of Lucca was so anticipated by Adam that while explaining the song choice, he ripped off his flannel to reveal a sparkling “Team Xtina” T-shirt that forced even the temperamental Aguilera to laugh off the obviously good-natured snarking. (Also, we’ll be needing one of those T-shirts. As a superstar musician, Adam, we have a feeling you know how to find us at MTV HQ in New York City.) Like Xtina and Chris, Cee Lo and Juliet managed to find a perfect song for their coach/contender performance, Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.” Their take on it, despite an abundance of studded leather and onstage motorcycles, however, fell kind of flat. (Lucky for Juliet, this wasn’t the performance that really counted for her.) We’re starting to wonder if Blake is getting jealous of Lucca, because it seems his bromance with coach Adam blossoms more and more each week, coming to a chemistry-filled fruition when the two hit the stage together to sing the Beatles’ “Yesterday.” Tony plucked the guitar, both crooned and, in all seriousness, the pair delivered a simple, clean take on the classic that left both grinningly pleased when they reached those key final chords. For his competitive performance, Mann went for his nearest peer in popular music, Josh Groban. It’s no surprise that Mann nailed “You Raise Me Up,” bringing his coach Christina to tears. Cee Lo called his voice “incomparable,” and it’s a fact that no one can argue. For their joint performance, Blake, who throughout the show has always proven a little more willing than the other judges (save maybe music Renaissance man Cee Lo) to step outside his comfort zone, leapt off the deep end and joined Jermaine for a funky, horn-filled “Soul Man” that was anything but country. It was a joyous and lively performance that makes us wonder if Adam is the one who should be jealous. There was definite onstage chemistry between Blake and Jermaine — and so another “Voice” bromance (we know, they hate that word, but we don’t care) is born. The night ended on a high note: Juliet Simms’ blistering tear into Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” The only woman in the final four, Simms stunned in a Florence Welch-esque gown and cape that Christina Aguilera gave props to. From one diva to another, Xtina also offered Juliet words of encouragement, as she was also under the weather — though you might not know it from her performance. Juliet tore the song up, and along with an amazing accompanying guitar riff, it was a performance that simply screamed “rock star.” She earned a standing ovation from her judge Cee Lo, but it was Adam that perhaps gave the most astute observation, saying, “I have no grit in my voice and you have all of it.” Don’t knock yourself down, Adam, but you are right &8212; Juliet’s voice is one of a kind. With a Universal Republic Records contract on the line, we’ll learn Tuesday who America has chosen as “The Voice.” Which performance was your favorite of the night? Let us know in the comments below!

Dear Bossip: My Husband Is A Pastor & His Ex-Wife Was Released From Jail & I Agreed To Let Her Move In With Us

Dear Bossip, First off, let me begin by saying thank you for reading my letter. I have been married for 10 years to a wonderful guy. We both have great careers (he is a pastor and professor and I am a high school principal) I couldn’t be happier with our lives. My husband has a daughter from a previous marriage whom I love as if she were my own. Recently, her mother (his ex wife) has come back into the picture. She was just released from jail and has no place to go. She has no family, friends, or money. What she does have is enormous love and respect from her daughter. Long story short, my husband suggested that she move into our finished basement until she can get back on her feet. Reluctantly, I agreed but told him that she can only stay for 2 months. He told me this was the Christian thing to do. I regret every part of saying that now. Lately, I have noticed that she is making passes at my husband (touching him on the shoulder, subtle glances etc). I told him about this and that I didn’t like it but he told me that I am overreacting and not to pay it any mind. This is where it gets interesting. I allowed her to use our washer one day because she didn’t have money to wash her own clothes. In her basket I noticed my husband’s boxers. I dismissed it thinking that he thought it was our basket when putting his dirty clothes in the laundry room. However, my suspicions are getting stronger now because I noticed a pregnancy test in trash of the guest bath in the basement. I confronted my husband about this and his alibi is that he was out of town. Which he was. He was out of town the same weekend his ex-wife “caught the Greyhound” to see her sick mother in a nursing home in Tennessee where she is from. Since I was under the impression that she had no family I’m very concerned, suspicious, and angry at the possibility of them sleeping together under my nose and conceiving a child. Am I being too suspicious or do you think I’m headed for divorce? – Christian In Crisis Dear Ms. Christian In Crisis , Chile, the moment he would have fixed his lips to say, “Ex-wife, leaving jail, and can she come here to stay,” I would have cut his ass off in mid-sentence, “Hell naw! Hell to the no! And, if you don’t understand that, let me say it in a Christian tone, Hell, freaking no!!” I don’t know what type of pastor your husband is, but, err, uhm, GET THAT WOMAN OUT OF YOUR HOUSE TODAY! NOT TOMORROW, NOT NEXT WEEK, OR NEXT MONTH. TELL HER TO PACK HER –ISH AND GET THE HELL OUT TODAY!! And, I’m going to say this and repeat it throughout my response: IT’S YOUR HOME! STOP LETTING THIS GO DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! PUT HER OUT! I hate when so-called Christians want to throw things in your face and say, “Well, it’s the Christian thing to do.” Oh, really??? Like, moving your ex-con ex-wife into your home with your current wife because she doesn’t have anywhere to go? Chile, puhlease, there are shelters all across America. I’m certain that your “pastor” husband knows of many shelters and food pantries for those in need. I mean most pastors are connected to the community, and I’m certain there are plenty of homeless, and hungry folks in your congregation that he often helps or refers to places that are specifically designed to help those in need. His ex-wife should seek out those services to get back on her feet. Your home is not a mission or shelter. IT’S YOUR HOME! STOP LETTING THIS GO DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! PUT HER OUT! But, hold up, I thought you said she didn’t have any family? So where did this mother in a nursing home appear from? SMDH! No ma’am. And, you mean to tell me that she has no friends? Really? Really! Not a single friend in the whole entire world that she can call upon? Girl, when your husband told you it was, “the Christian thing to do,” I would have responded, “Well, she’s got a friend in Jesus. Call on him and He will help her figure it out.” LMBAO! IT’S YOUR HOME! STOP LETTING THIS GO DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! PUT HER OUT! Then, this heifer is making passes and flirting with your husband right in front of you?! And, you haven’t punched her in her mouth, yet? What the hell are you waiting on?  Again, I am going to reiterate that this is happening in YOUR HOME, and your husband has the gall and nerve to say to you that you’re overreacting and pay it no mind. Oh, really? Hmph, well, invite your ex-boyfriend over and flirt with him in front of your husband and if he gets upset, then you tell him to stop overreacting and pay it no mind. Get the freak out of here! Talking about pay it no mind. IT’S YOUR HOME! STOP LETTING THIS GO DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! PUT HER OUT! Your husband is probably getting his jollies and loving the fact that he has the two women he’s in love with living in his home. Oh, my bad, I shouldn’t have said “two women he’s in love with.” But, it’s the truth! Believe that! And, I can only imagine the attention he is getting and how he feels knowing that the two of you are going after him playing into his male machismo. It makes him feel like he is the man and the king of the castle. His ego is surely inflated and he’s walking around swinging his nuts like he’s the bull and you two are the damn donkey cows fighting for his attention. It wouldn’t be me. I would burst his damn ego, and put my foot in both of their asses. It’s time to stop being the “good Christian” and be a “smart Christian.” Listen here: If you know a dog bites, and you trust in God to protect you, do you think being a good Christian and walking down the street tempting the dog that bites is wise, or do you use your common sense and avoid the street and use an alternative route? IT’S YOUR HOME! STOP LETTING THIS GO DOWN IN YOUR HOUSE AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! PUT HER OUT! Lastly, you found your husband’s boxers in his ex-wife’s laundry basket…. And they both happened to conveniently be out of town at the same time? Say no more…Let me say a prayer for you and for them. I suggest you get your prayer cloth, holy oil, and crucifix because it’s time to start whooping some ass! Some beat-downs are in order. And, when you’re done, let them take that to the altar and leave it there. – Terrance Dean Hey Bossip Fam, what do you think? Share your opinions and thoughts below! Taylor Kitsch’s Super Bowl Ads Needed More Taylor Kitsch

‘Friday Night Lights’ actor, set to break out in ‘John Carter,’ ‘Battleship,’ should have been featured more prominently. By Kevin P. Sullivan Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Walt Disney Pictures Millions of people around the world were introduced to Taylor Kitsch Sunday night. The Canadian actor found himself at the center of two of the Super Bowl’s biggest movie ads for his first two starring roles, in “John Carter” and “Battleship,” but the trailers may not have been the first impression Kitsch was hoping for. Kitsch made a name for himself starring as the misunderstood bad boy Tim Riggins on the beloved but criminally under-watched NBC series “Friday Night Lights.” Riggins grew dear to the show’s viewers because of the charm and likability Kitsch brought to the character, despite a tough exterior. Throughout the show’s run, it was never a stretch to imagine the actor making the crossover to big-budget action movies with his charisma as hard evidence of his bankability. But for his Super Bowl debuts, the studios behind “John Carter” and “Battleship” took the focus off of their star and instead cut special-effects shots together, leaving Kitsch as little more than background noise. The “John Carter” trailer that aired during the game handled its time the most curiously. Beginning with a shot of Kitsch from the film, the footage grew smaller, eventually becoming part of a large collection of footage that formed letters spelling out the title of the film. By the time most of the video appeared on the screen, it was too small to make any sense of it. What many people may not have known was that an extended version of the commercial, one with full-sized footage from the film, appeared online shortly after. That trailer showed off Kitsch during action sequences instead of zooming away from him. The ad for “Battleship” approached promoting a big-budget sci-fi movie in a more traditional way, albeit one that also put Kitsch in the background. The spot played more like a commercial for the other series of movies based on Hasbro toys, “Transformers,” and the scattered nature of it might have left people wondering whether the film stars Kitsch, Liam Neeson or Rihanna . Sure, these are just commercials, but if 2012 is going to be the year that Taylor Kitsch makes the crossover from TV heartthrob to viable action star, studios ought to realize who they’re working with and put the man front and center. Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter” and “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Madonna Halftime Show: The Reviews Are In!

Super Bowl performance reinstates Madge as ‘the biggest pop vixen on the planet.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna performs at Super Bowl XLVI Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Madonna did it all on Sunday night when she performed during the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis. She was an Egyptian Queen “Vogue”-ing it up for her biggest devotees. She was a cheerleader, cheering on L-U-V alongside a middle-finger flinging M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj for “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” She got her “Music” on with LMFAO and she sang the gospel of “Like a Prayer” with Cee Lo Green. In a sea of costume changes (with looks by Givenchy and Adidas Originals Jeremy Scott), dancers, acrobats, A-list collaborators and a killer set list, Madonna seemed to leave very little to chance. Sure, there were a few slip-ups , but, in the end, Madonna ensured that all anyone would be talking about around the water cooler come Monday morning was her, whether or not you completely loved what she did during the show. “It’s Madonna Louise Ciccone’s world, we’re just living in it,” Billboard.com wrote about her 12-minute-plus performance. “The pop icon took to the world’s biggest stage to rock three-and-a-half older tracks and a playful new song during the Super Bowl halftime show.” While the Super Bowl audience is usually dominated by people who most likely aren’t Madge fans, the singer, according to one review, seemed indifferent to that fact. “Madonna was defiantly unconcerned with the more conservative red state wing of the football fanbase who’d never be caught dead singing along to one of her songs,” the Los Angeles Times noted about her performance. “And her halftime show was pure spectacle by the Cleopatra of the game.” The show, according to the Chicago Tribune , wasn’t just about her, but also about reminding fans that she’s about to drop her next album, MDNA, in March. “This was Madonna’s party, and besides breaking off bits of her greatest hits to remind people of a time when she was the biggest pop vixen on the planet, she had important career-advancing work to do,” the review noted. “Madonna, after all, never does anything unless she’s got something to sell, and with a new studio album due out in March and a tour to follow, she had plenty on her to-do list.” Leave your review of Madonna’s halftime performance in the comments below! Madonna Gives High Energy Super Bowl Halftime Show

Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., LMFAO and Cee Lo Green help pull out all the stops for elaborate show featuring Cirque du Soliel and high-tech staging By John Mitchell Madonna performs at the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show Photo: Win McNamee/ Getty Images Madonna promised pom-poms for her Super Bowl XLVI half-time performance but she delivered a whole lot more, a high-energy spectacle packed with Roman warriors, Cirque du Soliel dancers, marching bands, cheerleaders and some very famous guests. She made quite an entrance, that’s for sure, riding onto the field at Lucas Oil Stadium on a throne dressed in full-on Cleopatra mode pulled by dancers dressed like Roman warriors. Decked out in a gold cape and massive headpiece with banners flying behind her, Madonna took the stage to “Vogue” as the song’s title flashed among the images on the high-tech LED stage and amazing digitized field below her. Cirque du Soliel’s theatrical presentation and acrobatic dancing were apparent throughout, but never more so than during “Vogue,” when the lavish staging met with tight choreography and Madonna sounding and looking great for an inspired spectacle and perhaps one of the biggest and boldest live performances of its kind ever attempted. She displayed none of the nerves she’d uncharacteristically been copping to in the lead-up to the event, tearing through her hits with plenty of superstar swagger and hitting all her dance moves just right. She had a good reason to be nervous though: Tonight’s (February 5) game in Indianapolis, Indiana is expected to be the most-watched television event of the year. Last year’s Super Bowl drew over 162 million viewers in the US alone. Next up, Madonna and a team of dancers, now a bunch of Adidas-wearing b-boys, met on some light-up bleachers for an athletic take on “Music” that segued straight into a dance-heavy remixes of “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” featuring guest’s LMFAO , proving that the 53-year-old pop legend can still keep up (and then some) on the dance floor. The promised pom-poms Madonna surfaced when she lit into her new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin,” along with a blonde Nicki Minaj and a, ahem, bird-flipping MIA . That’s right, the lone bit of controversy around the often provocative Madonna’s Super Bowl show will most like have to do with the Sri Lankan singer briefly flipping off the camera. The otherwise slickly produced show went off without a hitch. The Queen of Pop gamely picked up some gold pom-poms to cheer alongside Minaj, M.I.A. and a team of cheering dancers during the track, giving off the look and feel of the recently released clip for the song. Minaj and M.I.A. both got a chance to shine too, rapping their parts on the track’s breakdown. As expected, she performed three vintage tunes (“Vogue,” Music” and “Like a Prayer”) and one new one, “Give Me All Your Luvin,” the lead single from her forthcoming 12th studio album, MDNA . She partnered with a creative team from Cirque du Soleil, her longtime choreographer/creative director Jamie King and multimedia artists from Moment Factory, to plan the spectacular show. For the finale, Cee Lo Green marched on stage as the drum major to a large marching band, starting briefly into small bites of “Open Your Heart” and “Express Yourself before suiting up into sparking robes for a full-voiced rendition of “Like a Prayer.” Madonna and Cee-Lo were joined for a choir for the performance, which saw Madonna falling to her knees as she sang her classic track. She then stepped to the back of stage and vanished into a cloud of smoke, disappearing beneath the stage and leaving the still-cheering stadium wanting more.
