Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Video: A Guide To Its Madonna References

Aside from initial ‘Vogue’ comparisons, there are traces of ‘Like a Prayer,’ ‘Human Nature’ and other Material Girl clips. By Kyle Anderson Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records When the brief preview for Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video appeared during the singer’s appearance on “Larry King Live” last week, many people immediately noticed the nod to Madonna’s “Vogue.” It was all there: the sharp black-and-white photography, the muscular dancing, the spartan set, the iconic hairstyle. It would not have shocked anybody had she simply re-enacted the “Vogue” video in its entirety. But as it turns out, the full version of “Alejandro” — which premiered Tuesday (June 8) — is a healthy combination of a number of different references, nods and homages to a bevy of Madonna videos. The “Vogue” references are certainly there, as Gaga spends a large chunk of the video in that same spartan set in black-and-white. But the rest of the clip features Gaga in a number of different costumes — including a red nun’s habit and some sort of steampunk headgear — in a handful of different scenarios (most of which involving Nazi imagery). In addition to “Vogue,” the opening sequence seems to recall Madonna’s “Evita” period (when she made “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” a hit). Gaga is dressed to mourn whomever is in the casket behind her — perhaps the titular Alejandro? — and it would be easy to assume that she’s attending a state funeral, which would mean Gaga flipped the gender roles in the original story of the Per

Isn’t It a Pity – We’ve forgotten Who we are!

BILLY GRAHAM – A MAN WHO SAW WHAT'S HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY! “Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics… We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!' Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, 'The Rest of the Story,' and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. added by: ahiguy

Christina Aguilera’s ‘Not Myself Tonight’ Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Madonna to Michael Jackson to Bettie Page, we give you a rundown of the influences on Xtina’s new clip. By James Montgomery Christina Aguilera in her video for “Not Myself Tonight” Photo: RCA Christina Aguilera’s jaw-dropping “Not Myself Tonight” sees the pop star getting back to her “Dirrty” roots, but that’s not the only thing about it that seems nostalgic. See, in addition to all the bondage, barely there outfits and heavy breathing on display in the clip, there’s a whole lot of it that also reminds us of some of the greatest videos of yesteryear (or, you know, last year). There’s a familiar feel to “Tonight,” which is just part of why watching it is such a blast (those barely there outfits are another). So in order to maximize your enjoyment, we’ve complied this handy pop-culture cheat sheet, a sort of scorecard of the many influences that flash before your eyes. Oh, and we’ve alphabetized it for your perusing ease. Here’s what you may have missed in Christina Aguilera’s “Not Myself Tonight” : “Bad Romance” : Epic, white-washed Lady Gaga video. From Christina’s cat-like crawl across the floor to her red lingerie, there’s a whole lot of “Not Myself Tonight” that’s reminiscent of “Bad Romance” though, for brevity’s sake, let’s just focus on the black pair of Carrera shades she wears at the beginning of the video. Gaga can be seen rocking an identical pair in “Romance,” although hers are white. Dewan-Tatum, Jenna : Actress/wife of “G.I. Joe” star Channing Tatum (the two met on the set of 2006’s “Step Up”) makes a cameo in “Tonight” as Aguilera’s bound-at-the-wrists S&M slave. This scene also appeared in the director’s cut of “Step Up,” which is, like, really weird. “Dip It Low” : Sex-sational 2004 video by Christina Milian. In the clip, Milian rolls around in — and then covers herself with — what appears to be black oil. In “Tonight,” Aguilera douses herself in the same black liquid, though this appears to be black milk. Perhaps it’s a nod to the Detroit rapper/producer of the same name ? Probably not. “Express Yourself” : Iconic 1989 Madonna video helmed by David Fincher. More than anything, it appears to be the primary influence on Aguilera’s clip, from the monocle Xtina wears to the Fritz Lang-ian sets. Other similarities? In “Express Yourself,” Madonna crawls across the floor and laps milk out of a bowl, just like Christina. Both clips feature “dancing in the rain” sequences and gratuitous guy-on-girl groping. Not like we’re complaining about that last one, to be honest. “Freedom! ’90” : Supermodel-packed George Michael video also directed by Fincher. When Christina torches her closet in “Tonight,” it appears to be a direct homage to Michael’s video, though we’re fairly certain when Fincher set fire to Michael’s iconic leather jacket (which was also hanging in a closet) there was some sort of deeper meaning intended. Hair : Filamentous cells containing keratin that grow from follicles in the dermis (not the Broadway play, though, come to think of it, that works too). In “Tonight,” Christina’s many hairstyles recall style icons like Bettie Page, Beyonc

‘Glee’ Recap: Madonna Invades William McKinley High

Sue Sylvester takes center stage during the all-Madonna episode. By Jean Bentley Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Chris Colfer in “Glee” Photo: FOX Tuesday’s (April 20) all-Madonna episode of “Glee” imparted an important lesson: Even the almighty Material Girl can be upstaged by the power of Sue Sylvester. From her shot-for-shot remake of Madonna’s “Vogue” music video to her extra-acerbic insults of Will Schuester’s hair, the Cheerios coach was just on. At most high schools, Madonna songs blaring at high volume over the loudspeaker would prove to be a bit distracting. Then again, most schools aren’t William McKinley High, where Sue blackmailed Principal Figgins into playing her idol’s music full blast to inspire the students to be more independent and powerful. (This also, conveniently, allowed as many Madonna songs as possible to be squeezed into the 44-minute episode.) Sue had her Cheerios harness Madge’s power by encouraging them to troll the middle school for younger boyfriends and abandon their last names. She also choreographed a routine to “Ray of Light” involving stilts (not creepy — in fact, amazing) and hurled her greatest one-liner yet: “Sloppy freak-show babies. Somewhere in the English countryside in a stately manor home, Madonna is weeping.” Following Sue’s lead, Will made New Directions brainstorm Madonna numbers in an attempt to empower the female glee clubbers and discourage the guys’ misogynistic tendencies. This brilliant idea struck him when he overheard Rachel asking the female gleeks for hypothetical romantic advice after her new boyfriend tried to get her to do it after a Wiggles concert. (Remember, Rachel and Vocal Adrenaline’s Jesse St. James are secretly dating.) Unfortunately, guidance counselor Emma was no help. As we learned last week, she’s a virgin, too, but she did have some pretty hilarious sex-education brochures. After Rachel’s girl-power-y “Express Yourself,” her duet with Finn on the “Borderline/ Open Your Heart” mash-up, and a clandestine meeting with Jesse in the Steven Sondheim biography section of the library, where he apologized for pressuring her, she decided she would have sex with Jesse after all. But Rachel wasn’t the only character contemplating losing her virginity: Emma took to heart Sue’s quip that she wasn’t powerful enough to have Madonna piped into her office and told Will it was on. Foreplay would start at 7:30 sharp. And Santana decided Finn was the younger, inferior man she needed in order to emulate Madonna. The resulting (and inevitable) “Like a Virgin” extravaganza followed the three couples on their sexual adventures and was perhaps the best “Glee” number yet, as far as integrating the song and choreography into the plot and allowing multiple characters to sing solos. All six shared vocal duties — even Santana! And she sounded great. Still, it turns out that not all the couples went through with the deed. Although she told Finn the next day that she did it, Rachel didn’t actually leave the bathroom, even as Jesse implored her to “Just come out so we can talk. Or sing about it.” Jesse’s solution: transferring to McKinley to prove how much he respected Rachel. Finn, on the other hand, lied and said he didn’t do it when he actually did. Emma chickened out and ran home barefoot. She and Will decided Monday that they’d readdress their sexual chemistry after his divorce was official and she got help for her OCD. Kurt and Mercedes made the Sue Sylvester “Vogue” video as a multimedia presentation for their New Directions Madonna song (it’s almost indescribably amazing), and they were rewarded for their hard work in the form of positions as the Cheerios’ new lead singers, roles they debuted with a cover of the Madonna/ Justin Timberlake duet “4 Minutes.” Closing out the episode was a take on “What It Feels Like for a Girl” from the boys and a show-stopping “Like a Prayer,” complete with gospel choir, from the whole gang. Did the all-Madonna episode live up to its hype? Sound off in the comments!

Madonna Gives Props To ‘Glee’ Episode

Material Girl thinks one character in particular is ‘very cute.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: James Devaney/ WireImage Not only is Madonna excited to have her songs used in next week’s “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee,” she is also apparently hot for teacher. “I think Mr. Schuester is very cute,” Madonna said in a statement, referring to Matthew Morrison, who plays the glee-club instructor on the hit Fox show. “And I’m glad he’s doing such a good job empowering all the girls.” In the episode, according to Fox, Mr. Schuester assigns the kids to sing Madonna songs because he thinks the girls have been mistreated by the boys. He wants them all to benefit from the girl-power messages in tracks like “Express Yourself.” “Like a Prayer,” “Like a Virgin” and “4 Minutes” are also covered in the episode. Following this Tuesday’s spring premiere of “Glee,” Fox aired a shot-by-shot reenactment of Madge’s iconic “Vogue” clip, starring Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). Lynch told MTV News about how empowering she found it to cover Madonna. “Oh, yeah, the cone bra, the Gaultier bra, I wear that in one scene. And it’s the most powerful I’ve ever felt in my life,” she dished. “Well, you know what, I wore the cone bra with the track suit, so it worked. It was a win, win.” Which song are you most looking forward to seeing in the “Glee” Madonna episode? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos It’s The Return Of ‘Glee’! ‘It’s like ‘Glee’ 3.0,’ Dijon Talton says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Mark Salling, Dijon Talton, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum, Jane Lynch and Dianna Agron at the “Glee” premiere Photo: Craig Barritt/WireImage “Glee” is returning to television sets on Tuesday (April 13) with promises of tributes to Madonna and Lady Gaga lined up for this season. And the “Glee” club promised us that when fans tune into the show for this new crop of episodes, anything is possible — there will be lots of hot hook-ups and tons of interesting and unexpected musical numbers. “Everybody’s relationships when we come back are just really different,” Dianna Agron said of the characters’ love lives. “Different than what you expect.” Co-star Heather Morris added that there will be some shake-ups in the worlds of love and friendship on the show. “We create relationships … [There are] a lot more relationships,” she said. “We start to like a lot more people. I can say that.” And while this season the show will pay homage to both Lady Gaga and Madonna, Mark Salling admitted he had a favorite, telling MTV News he really loved the way one Madonna classic turned out. “We did ‘Like a Prayer’ in the Madonna episode,” he shared. “It’s my favorite number in that episode.” There are a number of guest stars lined up including Neil Patrick Harris , with Jennifer Lopez rumored to stop by this season as well. Dijon Talton summed up the ensuing craziness best: “You’re gonna see people you never thought hook up, hook up. Songs you never thought you’d hear, you’re gonna hear.
