Pop star is in goddess mode in snippet from upcoming video, which band teased during Canadian tour stop. By John Mitchell Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Coldplay teased the upcoming video for their latest Mylo Xyloto single, “Princess of China,” during a tour stop in Edmonton, Canada, giving concertgoers their first look at Rihanna rocking the look she tweeted about from the video’s set in March. During the band’s performance of the song, the Barbadian pop diva appeared on an overhead video in full-on goddess mode with multiple sets of hands fanning out behind her and moving to the beat of the song. The guys of Coldplay are big fans of the “We Found Love” singer and told MTV News last year that they were excited to work with her because it was an opportunity to cross genres. “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit,” frontman Chris Martin told MTV News in September. “When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay have not yet announced when the full “Princess of China” video will premiere. Rihanna, who is also featured in Drake’s “Take Care” video , is readying her own clip for her new single “Where Have You Been.” She hasn’t said when the video will debut, but she posted some sexy stills from the clip to her Facebook earlier this week. The top seven sang for their lives on ‘Now and Then’ night; here’s how they all fared. By James Montgomery Joshua Ledet performs on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” gave us the best of both worlds on Wednesday night, as the top seven sang something old and something new . That meant dusting off some classic soul tunes and coupling them with the current crop of shiny pop hits, and though you might not believe it, the results were actually pretty good. Yes, no doubt due to last week’s shocking near elimination of presumed front-runner Jessica Sanchez , the remaining “Idol” hopefuls were singing for their lives last night, and delivered a handful of genuinely great performances. Of course, a few tried to go outside the box, and the results… well, they were mixed. Still, a memorable show all around, and not just because of Colton Dixon’s Lady Gaga get-up. So who earned the night’s highest marks? Who should consider hiring a tutor? Read on for our “American Idol” report card! Joshua Ledet : Of course he did Fantasia. And, of course, his version of “I Believe” was amazing: lithe and limber, full of range and emotion, he’s the best male singer by a mile. Ledet also delivered big time with Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come,” which got off to an unintentionally hilarious start — Seacrest introduced it as “an emotional civil-rights anthem, coming to you live, from Joshua,” which was followed by a shot of Joshua holding a wind-up toy, grinning like a goofball — but no one was laughing by the end. He straight-up murdered it, with jaw-dropping power and prowess that earned him a standing ovation and some overtly sexual critique from Steven Tyler. Randy followed that up by taking shots at “The Voice,” only not overtly at all. Settle down, dawg. A Phillip Phillips : Let’s give a shoutout to Double P, who got out of the grouting business for one week only, first with a soft-core Skinemax take on Usher’s “U Got It Bad” and then a smooth (for him at least) spin through Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour.” Both were perfect choices, playing to his strengths — he is handsome — both left the ladies wanting more, and both had Steven Tyler talking like detective John Shaft (“No chump love, sucka.”) Game on, Colton Dixon. B+ Jessica Sanchez : Her version of Alicia Keys’ “Fallin'” was yet another powerhouse, as she set her intensity level on “simmer” and just let things cook. (Though for a minute, we were worried one of those umbrellas was going to fall on her.) We weren’t as crazy about her take on Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” — sure, it was big and brassy, but also kinda growly, and seemed like a cruise ship performance. And could there be trouble brewing on the high seas for the formerly indestructible Sanchez? She got the dreaded “you need to connect” advice from Randy et. al, and J.Lo almost forgot the name of her alter ego, which might not bode well for her down the stretch. B Skylar Laine : Wait, she did a Lady Gaga tune?!? Yep. Breaking free of her country container (it’s like Tupperware), Laine took on “Born This Way,” and we loved it. She’s got spark and attitude for days, and when you get the feeling she’s really pushing herself (like Wednesday or “Wind Beneath My Wings” a few weeks back) there might not be a better performer in the competition. On the flipside, her version of Marvin Gaye’s “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” wasn’t exactly great, and perhaps Laine needs to learn that just because you’re jumping around on the stage, it doesn’t mean you’re connecting with the song. Still, another strong week. She’s the dark horse from here on out. B ” Hollie Cavanagh : “No thinking, just singing ” seemed to be her mantra this week, and it worked. She completed her manifest destiny by doing Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” which was not only perhaps the biggest moment of the night, but had Steven Tyler talking about her tail feathers. Her version of Dusty’s “Son of a Preacher Man” was pretty much what you’d expect — faux swagger, some horns, a few nice notes — though the jury’s still out on whether Cavanagh actually connects with any of the voters. B Colton Dixon : For the second week in a row, he surprised with a song choice, taking Gaga’s “Bad Romance” down to the mall for a Hot Topic makeover. It didn’t necessarily work, but the girls loved it, so who cares? Though he needs to stop crouching like Spider-Man when he’s “rocking” out. Meanwhile, his version of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” got lost in an autumnal haze (maybe it had something to do with all the fallen leaves strewn atop his piano?) Not the strongest night for C. Dix… though we suspect he thought it went great. C- Elise Testone : A tale of two Testones tonight. She did Alicia Keys’ “No One” (we almost called it! ) and blew it out the box, with a performance that was restrained in all the right ways, big and booming in the best spots. But her gruff, kinda-goofy version of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” just never got on track and seemed like the worst possible song for her to sing. We love her, but we suspect this might be the week that does her in. C- Do you agree with our “American Idol” report card? Leave your comment below! Ashton Kutcher Breaks Off Liaison With Rihanna After She Is Followed By Paparazzi On Her Way To Hookup Is it just us, or is this guy the EPITOME OF A D-BAG??? SMH. Apparently the aftermath of Rihanna being caught creepin’ out of Ashton Kutcher’s crib in the wee hours of the morning has taken it’s toll on their “relations” and now Ashton is actin’ just like a lil beyotch with his panties in a knot. If you believe the print issue of OK! magazine , their hookup arrangement has been brought to an abrupt halt thanks to all the press speculation. But here’s the kicker. Ashton BLAMES Rihanna! WTF??? Here’s the details: Ashton Kutcher, 34 is furious that Rihanna, 24 was spotted at his L.A. home just before midnight on March 20 — and then seen leaving about four hours later. “He just can’t believe it,” an insider tells OK!. As soon as the news broke, he called her and told her it was over, saying, ‘I can’t trust you.” In fact, Ashton was adamant about keeping their hookup under wraps. “When Rihanna arrives at his house she didn’t tell him she’d been photographed by paparazzi,” says the insider. “He was very specific that she check to make sure she wasn’t being followed, and the way he sees it, she either screwed up or — even worse — tipped the photographers off herself.” And that is something Rihanna denies. “She was super-offended when Ashton suggested it,” says the insider. “She went off on him and told him she suspected him of calling the press. The way she sees it, he has more to gain from the fling than she does.” While the insider says that Rihanna “couldn’t care less” and thinks “he gets what he deserves,” Ashton is fuming. “He’s struggling with a terrible rep in Hollywood, and his brazen level of insensitivity toward Demi has only made it worse,” says the insider. “He got a stern warning from his Two and a Half Men bosses, who don’t want another Charlie Sheen on their hands.” “It took him ages to agree to meet up with Rihanna because he was afraid of all the attention it would bring,” says the insider. Apparently his fears have come to fruition. After a relatively the good times have stopped rollin’: “For a while they were very top-secret about it. It was supposed to be a fun, hot hookup. Now Ashton’s told Rihanna he doesn’t want anything to do with her,” says the insider! Whatever… Good riddance to bad rubbish we say. If this ish is true, he is off his damn rocker. Do you believe it? We just don’t see nobody givin’ up RihRih’s goodies just because of a lil bad press! More On Bossip! ‘We’ve lived a lot of life,’ Kevin Jonas teases MTV News about what to expect on their first LP in three years. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Jonas Brothers Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly three years since the Jonas Brothers released an album together. And a lot has happened for the trio, both personally and professionally, since they dropped 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times. Now, with all of that life experience under their belts, the guys are ready to hit the recording studio again. “In the next few weeks, we’re going to be going to New York and we’re gonna start writing for another project,” Joe told MTV News. The NYC trip probably has something to do with visiting little brother Nick, who is currently starring in Broadway’s “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” “It’s going to be, I think, our best record yet. I’m so excited.” The JoBros have been teasing fans for some time now about getting the band back together, and those plans seem to be coming to fruition. Kevin noted that they have a lot to say this time around. “We’ve lived a lot of life. … Joe and Nick have just released amazing projects and I’m so proud of them for that,” Kevin said. “They’ve had things in their hearts they wanted to put out there [and] now it’s going to be great. We’re all doing different things, living different parts of life and getting to experience it all together again. It’s going to be lots of fun.” As for when fans will get to hear the new album, Kevin promised it will drop “when it’s ready.” Joe, however, had a more definitive time frame for the highly anticipated release. “We want to be able to do things this year,” he said. “We have plans that nobody really knows about yet, performances that are already lined up and we have music already recorded too … our [aim] is probably close to the end of the year or next year.” Are you eager for new music from the Jonas Brothers? ‘It’s almost in her honor that we think to soldier on,’ Fox executive says. By Kara Warner Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett and Lela Rochon in “Waiting to Exhale” Photo: 20th Century Fox Those of you who have been patiently waiting for a “Waiting to Exhale” sequel since falling in love with the original in 1995 might soon have a reason to “Exhale” again, despite the tragic death of co-star Whitney Houston . According to New York magazine’s Vulture blog, Fox wants to make something positive of the tragedy and is planning on moving forward with the project in honor of Houston. “I don’t think she would want it to [be shelved],” Fox 2000 Pictures president Elizabeth Gabler told . “It’s almost in her honor that we think to soldier on.” Gabler, who worked on the original film, said the feel-good movie about four middle-class African-American women dealing with love and loss in the suburbs was a ground-breaker. “This was the biggest barrier-buster for color lines,” she said. “[Audiences] practically tore the theater down; we couldn’t get them to leave. All these young women in their twenties and thirties wanted to stay and talk about what they’d just seen: Suburban women drinking Chablis who weren’t living in the projects or stuck in gangs.” The studio picked up the rights to “Exhale” author Terry McMillan’s sequel, “Getting to Happy,” and has reportedly placed the film on a fast track of sorts, making plans to hire new writers to work on the script under the supervision of the original film’s director, Forest Whitaker. Although nobody has been approached about taking over Houston’s role, Gabler mentioned the possibility of “Exhale” supporter Oprah Winfrey coming on-board either to produce or potentially be in the film. “We literally have not talked about anybody for that part,” Gabler said. “Forest, I know, is just … grieving. He’d been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress.” Although Houston’s co-stars have not yet commented on their intentions to continue plans with the sequel, they did express their extreme sadness upon hearing the news of their friend and former co-star’s death. “I am so thankful to have been enveloped by the warmth of Whitney’s great talents. They were undeniable and vast,” Angela Bassett said in a statement. “Whatever her burdens, she has at last laid them down and picked up instead a crown. For truly, she was and will ever be for us — who were so captivated by her strengths — unparalleled.” “I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished ‘Sparkle’ and she told me how excited she was to start production on ‘Waiting to Exhale 2’ with Angela, Lela [Rochon] and myself,” Loretta Devine said. “My prayers go out to her family and I am so honored for the time I spent working with her on ‘Waiting to Exhale,’ ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ and on ‘Boston Public.’ I love you, Whitney, and I will miss your easy laugh.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Houston’s talents were ‘undeniable and vast,’ actress Angela Bassett says in statement. By Kevin P. Sullivan Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine in “Waiting to Exhale” Photo: 20th Century Fox In the days since her tragic death, there has been an outpouring for Whitney Houston from the music industry, but those who worked with Houston on feature films have also spoken out about her passing. Houston starred in 1995’s “Waiting to Exhale” alongside Angela Bassett , Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon . The film, directed by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, was based on Terry McMillan’s book and marked Houston’s second starring role in a film after Bassett, Devine and McMillan spoke publicly about Houston’s death, each expressing their deep sadness at the loss. “I am so thankful to have been enveloped by the warmth of Whitney’s great talents. They were undeniable and vast,” Bassett said in a statement. “Whatever her burdens, she has at last laid them down and picked up instead a crown. For truly, she was and will ever be for us — who were so captivated by her strengths — unparalleled.” Both Devine and McMillan referenced the developing sequel the group was to collaborate on, “Getting to Happy,” in their comments about Houston’s death. McMillan, however, insisted over Twitter that now was not the time to talk about the status of the sequel. “I am not thinking about the damn movie,” she said. “So please, don’t ask.” The author said that she had been afraid this would happen and stated, “I’m sad, hurt and angry. Because I did not want to see her leave us. Period.” Houston’s “Waiting to Exhale” co-star Devine worked with the singer on several occasion and had expressed hope about working together again. “I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished ‘Sparkle’ and she told me how excited she was to start production on ‘Waiting to Exhale 2’ with Angela, Lela and myself,” Devine said. Late singer showed dignity and vulnerability in films like ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Waiting to Exhale.’ By Ryan J. Downey Whitney Houston in “Bodyguard” Photo: Warner Bros. Whitney Houston will be remembered for her voice, her hit songs, her charismatic presence. As someone who has spent my life sharing equal passion for music and movies, it’s particularly noteworthy to me that the biggest hit I associate Houston with is intrinsically tied to a film. Judging by the number of “Whitney, I will always love you” tweets from celebrities and fans on Saturday, I’d say I’m not alone in thinking of her big voice mostly in “I Will Always Love You,” which is inseparable from “The Bodyguard.” My late mother was a huge fan of Dolly Parton, who originally wrote and recorded the song that would become a huge hit for Houston on the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard,” in which she starred (years before people ran around saying “meta”!) as a pop singer. The stepmother who came into my life when I was a teenager passed away herself a couple of years ago. The first Christmas present I ever bought for her growing up was a copy of one of Whitney’s albums on cassette, so I experienced a variety of emotions and memories about important women in my life as my Twitter feed blew up with reports of the troubled star’s untimely passing. Nobody knew Houston could act (a bit part on an episode of the corny sitcom “Gimme a Break!” was certainly no barometer) when director Mick Jackson cast her to play Rachel Marron, a singer in need of protection from a stalker, in “The Bodyguard.” Big marquee name Kevin Costner played the title role of an ex-Secret Service agent turned private protector. The two characters, against the odds and against the rule, become more than co-workers as the story unfolds. The movie is cornball, sure, but Houston was quite fun. Lawrence Kasdan, who put his stamp all over my childhood as a writer on “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Return of the Jedi,” reportedly conceived the script in the ’70s as a vehicle for the legendary Steve McQueen and Diana Ross. I was actually at the Grammy Special Merit Awards watching Ross accept a Lifetime Achievement Award when I saw the guy in front of me show his girlfriend a tweet about Whitney Houston’s death, which is how I first learned the news. Perhaps in some roundabout way you could call that my Six Degrees of Kevin Costner with this story. It’s not unusual to look for “signs” and coincidences when we try to process death around us, whether it’s a loved one, acquaintance or a public personality we never knew. “The Bodyguard” had action, romance and behind-the-scenes drama involving the entertainment industry, all of which are some touchtone topics that have followed me in life. I worked part-time in a record store when the movie came out and I vividly remember handling copies of the soundtrack on CD and cassette (remember those?) as patron after patron brought up a copy for me to ring up. The movie, the songs (“I Have Nothing” was no slouch!) and the CD were all intertwined, intermingled, wrapped up together to me. Houston’s performance displayed a certain tenderness combined with an elegant toughness that recalled screen sirens from mid-century. True, she was drawing from some life experience by playing someone so close to her comfort zone. But in 1995, she did it all over again in “Waiting to Exhale” and this time opposite acting heavyweight Angela Bassett (and directed by Forrest Whitaker!). “Exhale” shot straight to #1 at the box office, while Houston’s single from the movie did the same thing on Billboard. Last spring, Bassett did an interview in which she talked about a sequel reuniting the director and stars. Of course, that couldn’t happen now. Too many pop stars, rock idols and rappers trying their hand at acting have made the whole concept a joke to some people. And granted, not every musician who switches gears turns out to have chops (and vice versa in the actors-turned-musician department). But Penny Marshall certainly wouldn’t have put Houston next to Denzel Washington and Gregory Hines in “The Preacher’s Wife” if she’d watched “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale” and thought the singer hadn’t pulled off the jobs. The remake of the 1947 film “The Bishop’s Wife” may have included some hokey fantasy elements, but it still became the best-reviewed movie Houston made. Sure, both “Bodyguard” and “Exhale” are “rotten” according to Rotten Tomatoes, which aggregates reviews from major film critics. I’m not going to try to pass either of them off as particularly great films. But “The Bodyguard,” my favorite of the two, is an inoffensive confection that rises above the phrase “guilty pleasure” ever so slightly even after repeated viewings and even after all of this time. There’s no denying Houston’s likability and watchability in all three of her major film roles. She was dignified, strong and yet vulnerable in the sort of way that made you want to sweep her up like Kevin Costner on the movie poster. Houston’s final film, “Sparkle,” is set to be released in August, and indeed, there is nothing the specter of addiction can do to erase her sparkle on the silver screen. We’ll miss you, Whitney. MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12 starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston.
