Guru Fans React To His Death, Question ‘Farewell’ Letter

‘The Guru ‘farewell’ letter reeks of fakeness,’ one fan writes. By MTV News staff Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier Photo: Gregg Delman/ MTV.com Within moments of publishing the news that former Gang Starr MC Guru had died at age 43 after a long battle with cancer, dozens of reactions began flooding in paying tribute to the pioneering MC. “RIP my dude. You were the realest performer I have ever had the pleasure to meet,” wrote fan Cody James. Russell said, “One of the slickest rhyme-sayers has moved on,” predicting that although he has passed, the classic Guru songs will “forever bang in somebody’s CD player or iPod.” Reader Alex went further, saying a bit of hip-hop died on the day Guru passed, praising him for the fact that his unique jazz/hip-hop sound stretched from New York to the West Coast, while Julio said Guru and Premier were a huge influence on him and his love of hip-hop, calling Guru a pioneer and a rap “demi-god.” A number also lamented that Guru and his former partner in Gang Starr, DJ Premier, seemingly could not overcome their differences before the rapper’s death, alluding to the strong language Guru used in a letter reportedly written by him before his death. In the letter, Premier is not even referred to by name, but expresses the wish that Guru’s “ex-DJ” not have anything to do with “my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.” In addition to showering praise on the MC (born Keith Elam), a number of commenters expressed their concern that the posthumous letter from Guru’s partner, Solar, supplied by a PR firm handling press inquiries about the rapper’s health, was suspect. Gang Starr’s Guru: A Life In Photos “The Guru ‘farewell’ letter reeks of fakeness,” wrote Rob, who said he found it hard to believe that Guru was so bitter in death that he would go out of his way to diss his longtime music compatriot Premier. A spokesperson for the PR company that distributed the letter said it was submitted by Solar and approved by Guru and Solar. “No real fan of Gang Starr is going to believe this letter!,” said Louis. “It sounds like something that was written between Solar and his lawyers while Guru laid in bed unable to write or speak. It sounds more to me like a letter bragging about Solar than about Guru’s personal legacy. How can you not want Premier to be involved in the death of Guru?” In the end, though, they were mostly just sad that the world had lost such a gifted lyricist. “When the world loses an artist, a hero, an icon, a pioneer, we as humans can’t help but look back at what this person has done to personally touch our lives,” said Marz. “Such a moment has come with the passing of one of the greatest MCs in the world of hip-hop. A man who didn’t conform, didn’t sell out, didn’t lose sight of the big picture. Integrity is the word that comes to mind. Through his words he showed me that to be down you didn’t have to set your morals or common sense aside. … Thank you Guru, for being one of the greatest street professors to so many who attended the school of hard knocks.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Gang Starr’s Guru Undergoes Successful Surgery

Rapper’s partner DJ Premier tweets, ‘Keep sending him love,’ after rapper reportedly suffered heart attack. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Gang Starr’s Guru Photo: Gregg Delman Gang Starr MC Guru underwent successful surgery on Monday, according to DJ Premier. Premier, Guru’s partner in the long-running hip-hop outfit, tweeted the news Tuesday morning (March 2), writing, (“good news: Guru surgery was successful, keep sending him love.” Premier did not specify what the surgery was for or what the MC’s current condition was, and spokespeople for Guru could not be reached at press time for further information on the rapper’s medical condition. Guru suffered what has been described as a massive heart attack over the weekend, and according to reports was in a coma as of Monday. Premier began offering updates on the surgery late Monday night, writing, “Guru still in surgery, keep on praying people, he will make it.” An unnamed source told AllHipHop.com that the rapper was doing “fine” and is expected to make a full recovery. “Guru is alive and recovering from his surgery. Doctors are expecting a full recovery luckily.” Hot 97’s news director Miss Info reported Monday that Guru was in a New York-area hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery. One of Guru’s former collaborators, French MC Solaar, issued a statement on Monday in which he said, “Guru is struggling with a serious health issue. We, the whole 7 Grand Records family, appreciate all your love and well wishes. We continue to hold out hope that Guru will make a full recovery from this. We ask that his privacy on this matter will be respected. Again, thank you for all your support through this trying time.” Composed of Guru (born Keith Elam in Massachusetts) and Premier (born Christopher Martin in Texas), Gang Starr teamed together to help define the New York underground rap sound in the early ’90s. Premier’s production palette featured sampled jazz records and scratched vocals on the choruses, complemented Guru’s uncompromising rhymes. Although the pair would work separately as often as they did together — Guru’s Jazzmatazz series of albums and Premier’s work with Nas, Jay-Z, and underground act Group Home — Gang Starr continued to release critically acclaimed material throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their 1998 album Moment of Truth was among their most critically lauded collections and Gang Starr’s biggest selling project to date. Gang Starr’s last group project, The Ownerz, was released in 2003. Guru spoke with MTV News at the time, noting the pair’s penchant for working on outside projects, but ultimately continuing to stoke the Gang Starr flames. “You went on your little vacation, but you come back home with a bunch of skills and other things to add to the table,” he said. “When we do Gang Starr it always gets more and more intense.” Related Artists Gang Starr

Guru from Gang Starr in Coma

Legendary Brooklyn MC Guru — half of the infamous hip-hop duo Gang Starr — is in a coma after suffering from cardiac arrest this weekend. Guru's sister broke the news explaining that her brother, real name Keith Elam, had to remain in the hospital due to complications from the heart attack. Details remain scarce on the rapper's condition but DJ Premier, Gang Starr's second half, phoned into Sirius Satellite radio station Hip Hop Nation to confirm the details that have been leaked so far. “Guru is in a coma and will go under surgery tomorrow afternoon,” Premier said. Guru — originally Keithy E. The Guru — formed the pioneering hip-hop group Gang Starr in the mid-80s, teaming with Premier in the late '80s. The Brooklyn based duo's debut album was 1989's 'No More Mr. Nice Guy,' and they went on to release several successful albums. Guru's solo work includes four volumes of the Jazzmatazz series and he later launched both Ill Kid Records and 7 Grand record labels. http://www.theboombox.com/2010/03/01/gang-starrs-guru-in-coma-after-cardiac-arre… added by: AlbeeYap

Six Feet Under 1:8

It’s nice that the show labels the episode numbers itself.  Because I didn’t blog about the last few, I forgot what number I was on! I loved the relationship dynamics David had with everyone in this episode.  It’s great to see him relaxing a little and showing the more human side.  I think this episode did a lot to show the versatility of Michael C. Hall as well…but I am slightly biased due to my adoration of him. Also, they made a reference to BTVS in this episode.  They quickly compared it to Dawson’s Creek , but I will overlook that.  No way will I ever admit that the two shows are anything alike.  Full disclosure: I haven’t ever seen an episode of DC, but I don’t like anyone in it so I don’t think I need to

True Blood 2:12

I’m not sure that I watched an entire season of this show to have it end like this.  I don’t think it was bad, it was just maybe organized a little poorly for my taste. Maybe I’m used to a different kind of TV series, one where the season villain is really the only thing focused on in the final episode of the season.  Is this unreasonable of me?  I didn’t mind the other stuff, I guess I just felt like after all this, Mary Ann was just defeated too easily.  I honestly paused the show when she was killed and said “it’s only half over?!” I also feel a little let down by not spoilers from Rutina Wesley, the actor who plays Tara.  She said the ending was kind of bittersweet, but I don’t feel that way at all.  I mean, it’s bittersweet for her character, but at this point I don’t really feel like it is for the show.  It sucks that Eggs died, but I don’t know that we had enough time with him to really love him and be upset by his death.

Six Feet Under 1:9

I was really touched by this episode, it’s always more sad when the death is a small child instead of an older person.  Is it because you know they had a whole future ahead of them, whereas with an adult they’ve at least had a chance to do something? I guess needless to say, it was an emotional episode.  I believe I have mentioned that I’m still a bit death sensitive, and probably will be for awhile, so a really sad and touching death like this one gets to me a lot. And of course, let this be a lesson about loaded guns around kids.  Always always always be careful!  Your kids are much more likely to find that gun and hurt themselves than you are to actually need it as defense.
