I am lucky enough that a friend of mine went to Comic Con, so she was able to pick up the special edition DVD set of the first season of Dollhouse. Had I not had other personal issues going on, I would have watched this like, the second I got my hands on it. Going into this episode, and having seen the entire rest of the season, you would think it would really only answer questions you had before. I, for one, thought there would be more info about Alpha in this episode. And knowing the studio decided to reshoot the first episode and not air this one, I would doubly think it would be super information filled.

This week, we get Uther almost dying at the hands of the Black Knight, and the forging of Excalibur. I’ma tell you right now, that if a knight dressed in all black with a totally black horse bursts into your party, things are going to go bad. And also, it’s pretty likely magic is involved. Really, if someone burst into my house like that at all, I’d think there was magic behind it.

I believe we have discussed previously how much I hate episodes that do virtually nothing to further the plot, especially when it’s close to the end of the season. Granted, I have no idea how many episodes are in this season, but I’m pretty sure it’s close enough to the end that this kind of episode doesn’t have good timing. This is not to say that I didn’t find it to be an entertaining episode, it was actually not bad. Plenty of action, people getting away from Uther, girls fighting with swords (aka one of my favorite things). It just didn’t do much for the plot. We didn’t need to go back to Merlin’s home village and see the kind of life he used to lead, the people he lived with, his mom. And of course we had to have the obligatory “magic is bad news bears” lecture, but this time from Arthur! Fortunately, one of Merlin’s now dead friends took the credit for the awful magic that saved the people’s lives, so Merlin wasn’t found out. But it’s kind of disappointing that for all Arthur thinks Uther’s policies are bad, he is anti magic and doesn’t even have an explanation.

This episode also did nothing to further the overall plot, but oddly enough, I didn’t have a problem with it. I wish I could explain why this is, but I don’t have a reason. I’m simply okay with it this time around. In this episode, Arthur kills a unicorn while on a hunting trip and Camelot is now suffering from a curse – the crops are dying, there’s no water, people will soon die too. My first thought: Was it Starbeam?! To lift the curse, Arthur must pass a series of tests from the keeper of the unicorns. He passes the first one, where he lets a thief go instead of turning him over to Uther to be executed. Then fails the second one where the same thief insults his pride and honor, they get in a sword fight, and Arthur kills him. Cept the thief turned out to be fake and just all part of Arthur’s tests. The final test is ultimately that Arthur has to prove he is pure of heart, like a unicorn is. He drinks poison to save Merlin’s life, and is presumably dead. But it turns out it’s just a sleeping drought and he’s not really dead, the mere act of his sacrifice is enough to lift the curse

Remember how last week I said the show kind of disappointed me? Well despite that, I found myself really anticipating this weeks episode, to the point where I even asked myself “Is it Thursday yet?” What I should have done, to satiate that anticipation, was go back and read my review of the first episode. Because while I wouldn’t say this one was any worse, I did not get some fun thrill that made my waiting worthwhile. It’s kind of like those episodes in the RW/RR Challenge where someone I really like goes home…I waited all week, just to be sad at the end. I also found myself asking “Did I fall asleep?” when this episode ended. I am going to make a guess that they put fewer commercials in the first episode, therefore making it more action packed or whatever. But I felt strange enough about how short it seemed that I kept it on the DVR and will hopefully find the time to watch it again. And if I do that and find I did, in fact, fall asleep, I will write an amended review. Somehow, though, I don’t think I will find something terribly redeeming in a rewatch

Once again, Uther is a total jerk and almost dies. In this episode, Gwen’s father unknowingly assists a sorcerer so he gets arrested. Then Morgana helps him escape, he gets caught, and the guards kill him on the spot.

I have never really been a 30 minute sit com watcher. Even the ones that people *really* like, such as Seinfeld, have never really been my kind of thing. Thirty minutes is not a lot of time, and I usually don’t find things funny.
