WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to announce Tuesday night that he will begin to transition American forces out of Afghanistan beginning in July 2011, setting the first time frame to wind down the war there nearly a decade after the United States first sent troops in to topple the Taliban government, a senior administration official said.

Obama bars lobbyists from Federal advisory boards

Hundreds, if not thousands, of lobbyists are likely to be ejected from federal advisory panels as part of a little-noticed initiative by the Obama administration to curb K Street's influence in Washington, according to White House officials and lobbying experts. The new policy — issued with little fanfare this fall by the White House ethics counsel — may turn out to be the most far-reaching lobbying rule change so far from President Obama, who also has sought to restrict the ability of lobbyists to get jobs in his administration and to negotiate over stimulus contracts. The initiative is aimed at a system of advisory committees so vast that federal officials don't have exact numbers for its size; the most recent estimates tally nearly 1,000 panels with total membership exceeding 60,000 people.

U.S. seeks 10,000 troops from allies for Afghan war

WASHINGTON — The United States is scrambling to coax NATO allies to send 10,000 additional troops to Afghanistan as part of President Obama’s strategy for the region. NATO members and other foreign allies have expressed reluctance to send more soldiers because of the Afghan war’s growing unpopularity in their countries and increasing concerns over corruption in President Hamid Karzai’s government. The Obama administration views a substantial contribution from its allies as a way to keep the American troop increase lower and blunt domestic political criticism of the Afghan war

Obama’s slavery czar

His title is a jawbreaker: director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. But Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca's target is, simply, slavery. “We tend to say, slavery: bad; 1865: taken care of,” he tells me, wiping his hands dismissively as if washing away the scourge

Schumer: Public Option Will Prevail in the Senate

As Senators Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut) made statements that they had deep reservations about the current health care reform bill, Charles Schumer (D-New York) boldly declared that “…at the end of the day the moderate, opt-out public option will prevail.” Mr. Schumer did admit that centrist Senators as well as progressive Senators would have to do some more give and take saying “We all know we're going to have to give a little; that's what happened in the vote Saturday night, that's what happened here.” Its important to note that Mr. Schumer is one of the most powerful Democratic Senators, he heads up the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which means he's the one who decides how to allocate funds come election time

Japan embarks on annual whale hunt; can Sea Shepherd be far behind?
