Five young men who vanished from the Washington area last month are believed to be held in Pakistan while authorities investigate possible links to extremists there. The Pakistani embassy in Washington says the investigation focuses on whether the US citizens have links to extremist groups in Pakistan. The five men have been arrested but no formal charges have been filed

Barack Obama, the US President, has accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo but said others may be “more deserving” of the award. Obama defended the US record in Afghanistan President Obama, who earlier arrived in Norway with his wife Michelle, also defended the US record in Afghanistan and his planned surge of 30,000 military personnel as motivated by his desire to bring peace to the war-torn country. In his acceptance speech, he hit back at critics of his plan to begin withdrawing US soldiers from Afghanistan in mid-2011, saying he was “unambiguous” about the date and would debate it no further.

Beginning Thanksgiving week, conservative media and Republican politicians have compared the climate scientists whose private emails were hacked to Hitler, Stalin, and eugenicists, saying they are involved in a global conspiracy to defraud and possibly take over the world.
