Winners of White House’s 2011 Race to the Top Commencement Challenge got surprise of their lives at graduation ceremony. By James Montgomery President Obama meets with Booker T. Washington students Cassandra and Christopher Photo: Andrew Huang / MTV News & Docs Four years ago, Cassandra Henderson didn’t want to attend Booker T. Washington High School because, as she put it, “I thought the same as everyone else: that it was a bad school with nothing but bad people in it.” Now? Well, let’s just say she’s changed her opinion. That’s because, thanks to the commitment of Principal Alisha Kiner, the faculty and the students, not only has Booker T. Washington changed public opinion (posting math scores that are 20 percent higher and a 30 percent increase in graduation tends to do that), it has earned the attention of the nation, too, as the winner of the 2011 Race to the Top Commencement Challenge , a competition sponsored by Viacom, the Get Schooled Foundation and, oh yeah, the White House. Booker T. Washington students created a video that showed not only school pride, but the resiliency its students possess in the face of overwhelming odds. Booker T. Washington HS is not only located in Memphis, one of the nation’s poorest cities, but South Memphis has the 14th-highest crime rate in the country. And earlier this year, 20 percent of the school’s students’ homes were demolished in a citywide renewal plan. Still, in spite of all that, the school’s successes speak for themselves … which not only won them the nationwide competition, but meant that President Barack Obama would be coming to town to deliver the commencement speech at Booker T. Washington’s graduation ceremony on Monday (May 16). And understandably, students like Henderson were glad they stuck it out, not to mention proud of their school’s accomplishments. “It felt great,” she beamed. “For him to come to Booker T. Washington, this school people thought was terrible; for him to come to our graduation was a great honor and it brings hope to the school, it brings more students to the school, it changes the way people think about the school. Now they know what we’re all about here at BTW.” And as was the case last year, when Michigan’s Kalamazoo Central High School won the Race to the Top Challenge, Obama arrived in Memphis and was greeted by a select group of students — a group that included Henderson — who met him as he landed in Air Force One and rode in a 30-plus vehicle motorcade to the school’s graduation ceremony … a ride they’ll never forget. “We got to the airport and we got checked, then we waited for the airplane to land, and we watched Air Force One land, and the ladder came down, and Obama came out. Oh my gosh, I didn’t even cry — most people cry when they see him — I was just like, ‘Oh, wow!’ ” Henderson laughed. “And then we rode in his motorcade, and it was like we were the bosses. We were running the streets, nobody was getting past us. We were all saying, ‘We’re rolling with Obama!’ ” Also along for the ride was graduating senior Christopher Dean, who starred in Booker T. Washington’s winning video (“I tried to introduce myself, and he said ‘Stop, I know who you are! You’re Christopher Dean, I love your video!” Dean laughed). And once they arrived at graduation, Obama spoke to both students privately — and helped Dean straighten his tie — before surprising the rest of the student body before the ceremony took place. And he had Dean help him out in the surprise. “Our principal was giving [the graduating students] this speech, ‘This is how everyone needs to be,’ like she was going to be hard on them,” Dean explained. “Then I walked in and the president was behind me, and they went wild. When I brought him into the room, there were tears.” Dean then introduced Obama at the ceremony — but not before Obama gave him a little help. “Before I gave my speech, he could tell I was nervous, so he looked at me and was like, ‘You know what? You got it. Do it for me,’ Dean said. “And I knew I couldn’t mess up. These words were going to flow like water in the Mississippi River!” And for the students at Booker T. Washington, Obama’s surprise appearance was not only an added bonus to an already thrilling day, but it served as inspiration for a city that’s been down on its luck for a while now. And, hopefully, using Booker T. Washington High as an example, it can strive to be just a little bit better from now on. “I’m proud of my school and happy for my city. It was easy to play a role [in the winning video] once you’ve got peers like I have, and friends like I have … these are great people, and they deserve to have the President come here,” Dean said. “This city needed the help that he brings. Not only did he fail to acknowledge him as President, he made a point to stress his middle name, “Hussein,” whenever he referred to him. As if that’s not disrespectful enough, he called him a ‘low level socialist agitator’ who ‘never even ran a lemonade stand.’ While it’s no surprise that the Fox correspondent completely agreed with West’s enflamed statements, this beesh starts bringing up old sh*t ‘out of curiosity!’ She questioned whether West believed that Obama was unaware of his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright’s, ‘appalling’ references to white people. Speaking recently on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” West asserted that the president demonstrated “third world dictator-like arrogance” in delivering a speech on the federal budget and government spending. “I do stand by those words,” said the conservative congressman, who was elected into office last November with support from the Tea Party movement. “The truth needs to be said.” “I am sick and tired of this class warfare, this Marxist, demagogic rhetoric that is coming from the President of the United States of America,” West explained. “It is not helpful for this country and it’s not going to move the ball forward as far as rectifying the economic situation in our country. And I’m not going to back away from telling what the truth is.” The freshman lawmaker took issue with the way in which the president has regarded Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who recently introduced a controversial budget proposal for the next fiscal year. “I think that when you look at what a community organizer is turning out to be, it does seem to be like a low-level socialist agitator,” he said. Last weekend, West and Donald Trump were the keynote speakers at a Tea Party rally in Florida. The congressman told Newsmax at the time that he hopes the billionaire is serious about considering running for president in the next election cycle. “This is not a time for any jokes, games or gimmicks, and I hope he is very serious,” said West, who also declined to rule out running on a ticket with Trump in 2012. Donald Trump is not a big fan of Jerry Seinfeld after the comedian reportedly pulled out from an event appearance for the Donald’s son’s charity. Seinfeld was scheduled to attend a September 13 event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Eric Trump Foundation, but he canceled. According to reports, Jerry bailed based on Trump’s remarks about President Obama , which didn’t sit well with The Donald for a variety of reasons. “I just learned you canceled a show for my son’s charity,” Donald Trump wrote to Seinfeld in an open letter, accusing him of backing out simply: “Because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader.” Trump, who is considering a 2012 presidential run, didn’t stop there. “We don’t care that you broke your commitment,” he continued, “Even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager previously and clearly stated you are ‘truly a man of his word.'” Trump then took a shot at Seinfeld’s NBC show, The Marriage Ref . “What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, ‘The Marriage Ref,’ even though I thought it was absolutely terrible.” “Despite its poor ratings, I didn’t cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did.” A rep for Seinfeld said he agreed to appear at the event before Trump began questioning the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate. However, “Jerry has grown increasingly uncomfortable” with the Apprentice head honcho. “Jerry … feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse,” said the rep. “He has respectfully withdrawn from the event, but is making a contribution both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to [St. Jude].” Bret Micheals is slated to fill Seinfeld’s place, the rocker said in a statement. “Donald Trump and his family have been wonderful to me and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is one of my favorite charities, so I’m honored to have been asked by Eric and the rest of the Trump family to be a part of this event,” he said. “We should never allow the spirit of generosity to be overshadowed by divisive political beliefs,” Bret added in a dig at Seinfeld, “and when it comes to saving the life of a child, there is absolutely no room for political rhetoric.”
Donald Trump, is pulling all stops on this ‘birther’ theory business. So much so, he’s launched an investigation in Hawaii to prove that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen by birth. In a heated exchange with CNN’s ‘American Morning’ Hosts Ali Velshi and Kyran Chetry, Trump assured “all Americans” that he will be “revealing some interesting things” about the POTUS. Possibly-serious Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is giving few details about the investigation he claims to have launched in Hawaii to get to the bottom of where President Obama was born, but the business mogul told CNN Thursday Americans will be “very surprised” by what he has found. “We’re looking into it very, very strongly. At a certain point in time I’ll be revealing some interesting things,” Trump said on CNN’s American Morning. Trump first claimed earlier this month he had sent investigators to Obama’s home state in an effort to find out if the president was indeed born there, as he says he was and several media organization’s independent investigations have confirmed. “I have people that have been studying it and they cannot believe what they’re finding,” Trump told NBC then. But Trump has since offered few details about the on-the-ground investigation and, in the interview with CNN Thursday, wouldn’t specifically say if it had uncovered new details. “You’ll be very surprised,” he said when asked by CNN’s Ali Velshi if his investigators have found anything. During the interview with CNN, Trump also maintained he is worth considerably more than the $2.7 billion Forbes Magazine has estimated, and says he will reveal the real number if he decides to run for president. I can tell you that’s a very low number,” Trump said of the Forbes estimate. “It’s much more than that. And if I decide to run, which I very well may surprise people, but if I decide to run, I will give a net worth statement essentially. As you know, we have to fill out very detailed forms for the federal government.
