Obama’s job approval rating hits a new low

Is President Obama in serious danger of losing re-election in 2012? A new McClatchy/Marist Poll released over the weekend found Obama's job approval rating at just 42 percent — the lowest number of his presidency. One reason Obama's numbers have taken a turn for the worse: The president has lost ground with Democrats in recent weeks. According to the poll, 74 percent of Democrats approve of the job Obama is doing — a sign that he remains enormously popular with his base. But that number is down nearly 9 percentage points since November, according to McClatchy. Meanwhile his disapproval rating nearly doubled, moving from 11 percent to 21 percent in the last month. Among self-described liberals, his approval rating has dropped from 78 percent to 69 percent since November. At the same time, his standing among independent voters — the group that propelled him to the White House in '08 — remained dismal. Just 39 percent of independents approve of Obama's job performance, compared with 50 percent who disapprove. That's down more than 20 points since Obama was elected. Matched up against early 2012 contenders, the poll finds that if the election were held today, Obama would narrowly lose to Republican Mitt Romney, 44 percent to 46 percent — though that's within the poll's 3.5 percent margin of error. He would narrowly beat former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 47 percent to 43 percent. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20101213/pl_yblog_theticket/obamas-job-a… added by: im1mjrpain

MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’: Tax Cut Compromise Is Another ‘Steaming Pile of Garbage’

Comparing the current tax cut compromise with Barack Obama's stimulus plan of 2009, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough labeled the tax cuts a “steaming pile of garbage” on his December 13 show. Complaining that the compromise will add another $900 billion to the deficit, Scarborough compared it to the stimulus plan that cost a similar amount in the name of “stimulating” the economy. “This is a disaster for conservatives,” Scarborough asserted, arguing that adding to the deficit is worse than stimulating the economy with tax cuts that aren't “paid for.” The weekend after the deficit commission proposed a way to cut $4 trillion in the next generation, Republican leaders met with President Obama and produced a compromise extending the Bush tax cuts for all income earners, along with other provisions that would ultimately add $1 trillion to the deficit. “It's another steaming pile of garbage,” co-host Mika Brzezinski spat. Scarborough agreed with her. “Man, I tell you, if I were a Democrat in the House, I'd vote against this in a second,” he remarked.

Bloomberg News ‘Follows the Money,’ But Only in Direction of Death Tax Opponents

There's little point in “following the money” if you only follow it in one direction. And too often, journalists only follow the money to the right, leaving shady financial dealings from the left unexposed. That's exactly what Bloomberg News reporter Ryan Donmoyer did in a recent article on the death tax provisions of President Obama's tax deal with congressional Republicans. As the Washington Examiner's Tim Carney noticed , Donmoyer dutifully noted the indirect financial stake in the death tax debate of a conservative group that opposes the tax, but ignored a similar conflict on the parts of some of the tax's proponents. read more

Administration Confident That Tax Compromise Will Win Approval

The ongoing debate within the Democratic Party over extension of the Bush tax cuts was the big political news over the weekend, as the Senate is expected to approve the compromise deal between President Obama and Republicans today. Administration officials appeared on the Sunday talk shows to make their case as liberal House Democrats insist they will not go along without modifications to the proposal. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101213/ap_on_bi_ge/us_tax_cuts;_ylt =AseRtOz8i03PQoaJ5drwW4JI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTJoZWo0dW04BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAxMjEzL3VzX3RheF9jdXRzBHBvcwMxBHNlYwN5bl9wYWdpbmF0ZV9zdW1tYXJ5X2xpc3QEc2xrA2V2ZW5kZW1mb2Vzbw– added by: Radical_Centrist

Obama ignores clemency for political prisoners

President Obama fails to free political prisoners in the US The United States of America holds the world record for the most incarcerated population on the planet. Nearly 2.3 million Americans are locked into the country’s criminal justice system.Among them, hundreds of political prisoners the U.S. government does not recognize. “There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people [in the U.S.] whom I would call political prisoners.” So when US President Barack Obama finally decided to execute his pardon privilege, his choices were disappointing to many, like Jim Klimaski, who litigates constitutional and civil rights cases. Klimaski told RT: “President Obama had the opportunity of correcting egregious errors and the people he pardoned are essentially insignificant.” The men and women granted clemency all committed low level offenses such as forgery, drug possession, even mutilating coins. Some of the recipients of the pardons didn't even go to prison. In the stacks of pardon applications were those of prisoners like Native American Activist Leonard Peltier. Peltier, a member of the militant American Indian Movement was sentenced to two life terms in prison for allegedly killing two FBI agents. However, the initial trial was corrupted by faulty affidavits and coerced evidence submitted by the FBI. Some argue Peltier’s only crime was his political activism. Betty Peltier, Leonard’s sister told RT: “They have no evidence at all that he killed anyone.” Mumia Abu Jamal is also considered a political prisoner. He has been on death row for over two decades. Abu Jamal was member of the Black Liberation Movement. He was charged for a crime world dignitaries and members of the European Parliament insist he did not commit. At a demonstration in Washington, DC one Mumia supporter said: “The only reason why he is in jail is because he was framed.” Political hip hop artist Immortal Technique has leant his support and voice to Mumia’s case. He believes these convictions are simply the most known cases of a systematic attempt to silence those seen as a threat to the establishment. “They symbolize a system basically charging someone who is innocent with a crime. Someone specific who is attached to a movement.” Hundreds of other cases fit the description of political prisoners. Such as the Cuban Five, in prison for investigating terrorists attacks against Cuba from Miami and the Puerto Rican Liberation fighters jailed for fighting for Puerto Rico’s independence from the U.S. Those groups, along with countless members of the Black Panther Party, became targets for political reasons some lawyers insist. Zachary Wolfe of the National Lawyers Guild has dealt with many flawed cases. He believes Obama acted with poor judgment. “Pardon Power is absolute, he can do whatever he wants and he has chosen not to,” Wolfe said. He recalls previous pardons that were controversial. “It's hard to see any justice in the process. There are people who have done harm to democracy who have been pardoned such as Oliver North” Oliver North was convicted of selling weapons to the Iranian government during the Iran/Iraq war to fund America’s covert war against the socialist Sandinista government in Nicaragua. The incident became infamous as the Iran Contra scandal. Other controversial pardons in recent history include President Gerald Ford granting clemency to President Richard Nixon for Watergate and installing a vigilante program against political dissidents. President Bill Clinton pardoned billionaire fugitive Marc Rich while George W Bush commuted Scooter Libby's sentence, the man convicted of the CIA leak scandal. There is an international precedent for recognizing and releasing political prisoners. France did it with its anarchists, Germany with the Red Army, Great Britain with the IRA. Not the US government. While a Senate committee once recognized the abuses committed by the FBI in persecuting activists for political reasons, Obama continues a long tradition of presidents who refuses to use his power of pardon for America’s alleged political prisoners. http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-political-prisoners-usa/ added by: MotherForTruth

Republicans block Senate health aid bill for 9.11 workers

Republican senators blocked Democratic legislation on Thursday that sought to provide medical care to rescue workers and others who became ill as a result of breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke at the site of the World Trade Center attack in 2001. The 9/11 health bill, a version of which was approved by the House of Representatives in September, was among several initiatives that Senate Democrats had hoped to approve before the close of the 111th Congress. Supporters believe this was their last real opportunity to have the bill passed. The action by the Senate created huge uncertainty over the bill’s future. Its proponents were working on Thursday to salvage the legislation, with one possibility being to have it inserted into a large tax-cut bill that Republicans and Democrats are trying to pass before Congress ends its current session. Such a move seemed unlikely, since it might complicate passage of the tax package, which includes a provision that President Obama sought in return for backing the continuation of tax cuts for all income levels that Republicans wanted: an extension of unemployment benefits. In a vote largely along party lines, the Senate rejected a procedural move by Democrats to end debate on the 9/11 health bill and to bring it to a vote; 60 yes votes were needed, but the move received 57, with 42 votes against. Republicans have been raising concerns about how to pay for the $7.4 billion measure, while Democrats, led by Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York, have argued that there was a moral obligation to assist those who put their lives at risk during rescue and cleanup operations at ground zero. The bill is formally known as the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, named after a New York police detective who participated in the rescue efforts at ground zero. He later developed breathing complications that were common to first responders at the site, and he died in January 2006. The cause of his death became a source of debate after the city’s medical examiner concluded that it was not directly related to the attacks. After the vote, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney of New York, a chief sponsor of the bill in the House, argued that Democrats should include the 9/11 health bill in the larger tax-cut legislation and, in the process, dare Republicans to oppose it in that context. Ms. Maloney added that the tax bill was the one piece of legislation that “Republicans won’t leave this town without passing.” As the day wore on, it appeared increasingly unlikely that the Senate would include a provision providing health care for ground zero workers in any tax package it brought to the floor, according to senior Capitol Hill officials. But supporters of the 9/11 legislation said there was a possibility they could persuade Democratic leaders in the House to include it in any tax-cut plan that the chamber approved and win Senate approval during negotiations over differences in measures passed by the two chambers. The Senate action was a blow to sponsors of the bill, who mobilized a network of allies across the political spectrum to lobby on its behalf, including the New York City police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Ms. Gillibrand, the chief sponsor in the Senate, even reached out to former President George W. Bush. But her aides say Mr. Bush did not respond to her entreaties. cont. added by: JanforGore

Brian David Mitchell, Uber-Creepy Elizabeth Smart Kidnapper, Found Guilty in Federal Court

Brian David Mitchell was convicted of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart. Seven years after he abducted Smart now 23, from her Utah bedroom and subjected her to a terrifying nine-month ordeal, a jury rendered a guilty verdict on charges of kidnapping and transporting a child across state lines for sexual purposes. He faces a possible life sentence. That might not be long enough … AHHH! Scared yet? Luckily for all of us, Brian David Mitchell is off to prison . Jury deliberations began after a month of testimony , including several days on the witness stand for Smart, who calmly recounted how Mitchell raped her daily. Mitchell was singing “The Great Redeemer Died,” as he often does, and didn’t stop singing when the verdict was read aloud, showing no visible emotion either. Elizabeth Smart, 23, took her seat next to her parents, Ed and Lois, and her sister, Mary Katherine. After the verdict was read, a look of triumph was shared. Mitchell’s accomplice, Wanda Barzee, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping last year, is serving a 15-year sentence in a federal facility already. Good riddance.

Bill O’Reilly on The View Walkout: Best. Publicity. Ever.

Two months after his infamous interview on The View , in which Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg stormed off the set because they disagreed with his take on the Ground Zero Mosque, how does Bill O’Reilly feel about that incident? Just dandy, thanks for asking! Appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman last night, the Fox News host recounted his feelings when all this went down: “I was thinking, ‘This is great. This is terrific. I hope they all leave. Then I’ll take the whole show. I’ll have 45 minutes of ABC airtime.'” O’Reilly and Letterman also discussed Sarah Palin’s run for presidency and enjoyed a somewhat serious debate about President Obama: Bill O’Reilly on Letterman

By Jocelyn Vena Angelina Jolie at “The Tourist” premiere Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Angelina Jolie and her children have racked up the frequent-flyer miles over the years, both for film shoots across the globe (for her films and Brad Pitt’s), their humanitarian efforts and their clear love of traveling. At the premiere of her latest flick, “The Tourist,” which she shot in Europe, Jolie said bringing them along is fun for everyone. “Fortunately, we’ve given them a love of discovering new places and new people and new cultures,” she said. “And they like to pack their bags and have new adventures.” In the sexy spy thriller, she plays an English woman who uses an American tourist (Johnny Depp) to help find her fugitive former lover. But it sounds like her little ones made for a lighthearted time on set. “It’s always fun to have my family on set,” she explained. “I think it wouldn’t be the same without them. They get to come and laugh at mommy for playing dress-up and having a funny accent.” At the premiere, Jolie also talked about the other perks of making the movie. “I liked that she was a real lady, a real European lady, and I’ve never played that before. I thought it was a challenge for me to be a girl, a real girly girl,” she said. “Living in Italy for a few months was pretty hard to resist. And I’ve been dying to work with [director] Florian [Henckel von Donnersmarck], and I’ve always wanted to work with Johnny and never met him, so it was great. Frank Rich: Weak Obama Suffers from ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ for Agreeing to Extend Bush Tax Cuts

It appears that President Obama is about to approve the extension of the Bush tax cuts and this has sent liberals into a frenzy. How to explain it? Well, Frank Rich of the New York Times has a very creative explanation : a weak Barack Obama has been spiritually kidnapped by Republicans and is now suffering from Stockholm Syndrome which allows him to sympathize with his captors. Here is Rich explaining it in “All the President's Captors” at his entertaining best: THOSE desperate to decipher the baffling Obama presidency could do worse than consult an article titled “Understanding Stockholm Syndrome” in the online archive of The F.B.I. Law Enforcement Bulletin. It explains that hostage takers are most successful at winning a victim’s loyalty if they temper their brutality with a bogus show of kindness. Soon enough, the hostage will start concentrating on his captors’ “good side” and develop psychological characteristics to please them — “dependency; lack of initiative; and an inability to act, decide or think.”
