Obama bypassing Senate to appoint key nominees

(L.A.+Times+-+Top+News) Reporting from Washington – The Obama administration moved Saturday to fill 15 economic posts whose nominees are held up in Congress, bypassing the formal Senate confirmation process — a decision that is sure to further anger and embitter Senate Republicans. The move reflected the frustration within the White House about what they see as obstructionist actions by a Republican minority that is intent on blocking the administration's agenda. The Republicans saw the move as confirmation that President Obama had abandoned his pledges of trying to govern in a bipartisan way and further deepened their skepticism over the administration's economic policy. As the White House announced its intention to make the recess appointments, an administration official confirmed that Obama would name Donald M. Berwick, a pediatrician who has pushed hospitals to lower costs and improve care, to head a crucial agency overseeing parts of the new healthcare law. added by: CaptSutter

Up Next for Lady Gaga: Sunglasses!

Getty Images. Gaga is a sunglasses-at-night kind of woman. It was really only a matter of time before fashionable Lady Gaga accessories hit store shelves. The ultra-hip singer is reportedly working on a line of sunglasses with designer Linda Farrow, the eyewear label behind the Alexander Wang shades Gaga has been pictured in more than once. Gaga has been open about her desire to launch a clothing line, saying, “It's definitely something I want to do in the next year, as I do have my own style. I'm already talking to my boy Akon about it.” Gaga says her eccentric manner of dress is, in part, influenced by her desire to reassure her “freakish” fans that they're not alone. “I didn't fit in at high school. I wanted to be like Boy George and I felt like a freak. So I like to create this atmosphere for my fans where they feel like they have a freak in me to hang out with, and they don't feel alone.” More pictures of Lady Gaga wearing sunglasses: Continue reading

Killing mosquitoes with lasers to combat Malaria

In a bid to combat malaria, Intellectual Ventures is developing a method of killing mosquitoes with lasers. The system is called a Photonic Fence and identifies the beasties by the frequency of their wing flapping (hey, that’s exactly how we know when they’re dive-bombing our heads). Once locked-on, it’s death to the filthy blood-suckers. This story was latched onto by the gambit of news sources in the middle of 2009. Since then, the development team has added some pretty interesting info on their webpage. Last Feburary several videos of mosquito flight were posted. These were shot at 6000 fps using specially designed photographic rigs (probably much like this one) to make sure the shots were in focus. Now they’re slated to give a talk at the 2010 TED conference. The publication of these talks sometimes lags behind by several months so be patient. Watch the video after the break to get some abstract shots of the hardware being used; they’re not giving up the goods until the conference. added by: lordsbassman

Gallup Poll: Americans Support Healthcare Bill’s Passage

PRINCETON, NJ — Nearly half of Americans give a thumbs-up to Congress' passage of a healthcare reform bill last weekend, with 49% calling it “a good thing.” Republicans and Democrats have polar opposite reactions, with independents evenly split. The findings, from a March 22 USA Today/Gallup poll conducted one day after the bill received a majority of votes in the U.S. House of Representatives, represent immediate reactions to the vote. Americans' emotional responses to the bill's passage are more positive than negative — with 50% enthusiastic or pleased versus 42% angry or disappointed — and are similar to their general reactions. Although much of the public debate over healthcare reform has been heated, barely a third of rank-and-file citizens express either enthusiasm (15%) or anger (19%) about the bill's passage. The Bottom Line – Passage of healthcare reform was a clear political victory for President Obama and his allies in Congress. While it also pleases most of his Democratic base nationwide, it is met with greater ambivalence among independents and with considerable antipathy among Republicans. Whether these groups' views on the issue harden or soften in the coming months could be crucial to how healthcare reform factors into this year's midterm elections. Given that initial public reaction to Sunday's vote is more positive than recent public opinion about passing a healthcare reform bill, it appears some softening has already occurred. http://www.gallup.com/poll/126929/Slim-Margin-Americans-Support-Healthcare-Bill-… added by: current89

Joe Biden Congratulates Barack Obama with F-Word [Language]

“This is a big fucking deal,” the Vice President said before President Obama signed the health insurance reform bill into law. Another classic Joe Biden “gaffe,” which is when he says a truthful and often totally endearing thing in public.
