Dirty Dog Diaries: John Edwards Walks In Federal Corruption Trial

Every dog has his day. Edwards Trial Jury Deadlocked On 5 Charges, Not Guilty On Remaining Charge Four years, a pregnant jump off, a lost presidency bid, and 6 counts of federal corruption charges later, former U.S. Senator John “Scumbag” Edwards has finally had his day in court. Too bad it’s looking like the jury has cut him some slack. According to TMZ reports : John Edwards has just been found NOT GUILTY on one of six campaign fraud charges stemming from his 2008 run for President — the judge declared a mistrial on the remaining counts after jurors deadlocked. Edwards was found “not guilty” of receiving illegal campaign contributions. The jury failed to reach a verdict on the other charges — including three additional counts of illegal campaign contributions, one count of conspiracy, and one count of making false statements. The jury — 8 men, 4 women — reached today’s verdict after 9 days of deliberations. The two-time former Presidential candidate was charged with the six counts of campaign finance fraud for allegedly using nearly $1 million in campaign contributions to hide his mistress Rielle Hunter and their lovechild from the public. Edwards faced a maximum of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine. In closing arguments, Edwards’ lawyer had told the jury the money to hide his mistress came from a former campaign treasurer and an elderly supporter — both of whom gave Edwards the money as a gift for his benefit … not as part of his campaign. Edwards’ lawyer said the money was used to hide his affair from his dying wife, claiming, “John was a bad husband, but there is not the remotest chance that John did or intended to violate the law.” Edwards spoke briefly outside the courthouse after the verdict was read, saying how grateful he was for his children — and when he got to the 4-year-old daughter Quinn (whom Edwards fathered with mistress Rielle Hunter) he choked up, saying, “My precious Quinn, who I love more than any of you can ever imagine, [who] I am so close to, so, so grateful for.” We don’t know if prosecutors will push for a retrial. Defense of Marriage Act Ruled Unconstitutional

An appeals court ruled Thursday that the Defense of Marriage Act, a law that essentially denies a host of benefits to gay married couples, is unconstitutional. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston said the law, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, discriminates against gay couples. Ya think? The law was passed in 1996 by a Republican-led Congress at a time when it appeared as if Hawaii would become the first state to legalize gay marriage. Since then, many states have instituted their own bans on gay marriage, while eight states have approved it. Massachusetts was the first in 2004. The appeals court ruled the DOMA is unconstitutional because it interferes with the right of a state to define marriage and denies married gay couples federal benefits given to heterosexual married couples, including the ability to file joint tax returns. Somewhere in Indiana, this church kid is singing an angry song. During arguments before the appeals court last month, a lawyer for gay married couples said the law amounts to “across-the-board disrespect.” The couples argued that the power to define and regulate marriage had been left to states for more than 200 years before Congress passed this. An attorney defending the law argued that Congress “wanted to preserve a traditional and uniform definition of marriage” and maintains the power to define terms used to federal statutes to distribute federal benefits. The court did not agree. Last year, President Barack Obama announced the U.S. Department of Justice would no longer defend the constitutionality of the law. Obama voiced support for gay marriage earlier this spring, becoming the first U.S. President to do so. Your view on same-sex marriage :

Is Jenelle Evans Pregnant Again?!

Jenelle Evans just got engaged to Gary Head , and already, rumors are flying that the Teen Mom terror may expecting a second child she has no interest in. The Oak Island, N.C., product has “put on 20 lbs. recently,” according to a source because she is pregnant with another baby … supposedly. Allegedly. Hey, at least she’s in a “stable” relationship at this point. Her engagement to Gary Head has already lasted two whole weeks, beating analyst expectations. Is she actually pregnant though? We doubt it. It’s just hearsay. Still, “she’s so irresponsible, it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s pregnant,” says an insider. “But for her to want another child would be crazy, because it doesn’t seem to bother her at all that she doesn’t have custody of [2-year-old son] Jace.” Who said anything about wanting one? Anyway, baby or not, Gary is stoked he gets to see Jenelle Evans nude for the rest of his life, or at least until their engagement ends this summer. “She just broke up with Kieffer [Delp] a week before the engagement and immediately got back with Gary,” the insider explains. “Gary is thrilled, because he had asked her to marry him before and she said no. I guess she changed her mind.” Guess so.

Demi Lovato Dreams of Marriage, Kids

Demi Lovato is currently judging X Factor auditions and will kick off a summer tour on June 12 in Del Mar, California. In other words: she’s very busy these days. But give the singer about a decade and she’ll be ready to settle down. “I want to be married with kids in 10 years,” Lovato tells the latest issue of Cosmopolitan , which is apparently all about sex and nudity for a change. With what kind of man will Lovato end up? She can’t say for certain, of course, but she does dish on one deal breaker:’ “I know one quality I won’t tolerate: I would never be with a guy who is controlling.” That point of view has to do with the problems has Lovato encountered throughout her teenage years, issues related to depression and eating disorders. She tells Cosmo she felt “relieved” when she was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2010. “I felt relieved when I found out. Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it. It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.”

Michelle Obama (Sort of) Speaks on Barack’s Pot-Smoking Ways

Leave it to Michelle Obama to take the high road. Pun sort of intended. While appearing on The Daily Show to promote her newest book, American Grown , the First Lady was asked about President Barack Obama’s pot-smoking past. Stewart likened Obama’s youth to “the script of a Cheech and Chong movie.” Not surprisingly, the Commander-in-Chief’s better half had a classy response. “He was like many young people,” she said, adding that her husband changed his ways in college when “he realized he could do more with his life.” Stewart later tried to a comparison between President Obama and George W. Bush, whose past was also “out there,” saying “he really related to that.” “I’m not taking any bait,” Obama quickly replied, to Stewart’s amusement. The First Lady is classy and funny, ladies and gentlemen.
