Taylor Swift: Mocked by Pundits, Comedians for Failed Political Endorsement

Taylor Swift shocked most of the free world several weeks ago when she came out of the woods and threw her support behind a pair of Democratic political candidates in Tennessee. In a heartfelt and lengthy Instagram post, the singer endorsed Jim Cooper for House of Representatives in her native state and Phil Bredesen for Senate. How did her preferred nominees do? Well… Cooper defeated Jody Bell by a whopping 35 points in what was clearly a not very competitive race. But Bredesen failed to help Democrats gain a majority over Republicans in the Senate. He lost by about 14 points to Marsha Blackburn. Oh well, right? You can’t win ’em all and the important thing is that Swift used her platform for something she believes in, prompting an enormous surge in voter registration by doing so . Nope, sorry. That wasn’t the important thing according to at least one Conservative pundit out there. Fox News host Laura Ingraham took to Twitter after Bredsen’s failed bid to rub his loss in the face of the pop star, something totally normal and mature for her to do. “Hey @taylorswift13, haters gonna hate. #shakeitoff,” Ingraham wrote following the election results. Ingraham has a history of going after young singer, as she previously labeled Ariana Grande as spoiled and entitled . In this case, however, she wasn’t the only famous person to cite Swift’s endorsement in her summary of the midterm elections. Stephen Colbert also poked fun at the Tennessee Senator outcome during his live episode of The Late Show. “I guess Tay-Tay didn’t have that much sway-sway, and Blackburn’s support for the Trump administray-stray eventually outweighed-weigh the president’s support for higher teacher pay-pay at the end of the day-day,” he joked. He poorly joked, we should add. After failing to offer her support for Hillary Clinton in 2016, and after remaining silent for years on basically all social issues, Swift took social media followers by surprise exactly one month ago. “In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” she wrote at the outset of her unexpected endorsement at the time. She continued: “I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.” What issues did Taylor have with eventual winner Blackburn? “She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. “She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. “These are not MY Tennessee values.” In the end, Swift’s message earned her mockery from Donald Trump and a few others out there. But we hope she was not dismayed from getting more involved in the future. She has a very powerful voice. It would be a shame if she chose not to use it. 5 Things We Learned From The Midterm Elections

B lack candidates were instrumental in helping the Democrats win the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, enabling Democrats to end one-party rule and turn up the heat on President Donald Trump . But it was a mixed result, with disappointments in places like Florida where Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum lost in a close race for governor. At the same time, several Black candidates made history, like Ayanna Pressley who become Massachusetts’ first Black woman in Congress . Some of the elections were plagued with a number of instances of attempts to suppress the Black vote, including a concerted effort in Georgia ahead of Election Day that continued on Tuesday . See Also: ‘Dirty Tricks’: Stacey Abrams Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines Here are five takeaways from the 2018 midterm elections: Black women candidates are winners While some African-American female candidates like Jahana Hayes were victorious and others such as  Vangie Williams came up short, they are all winners. Some of these women made history by winning competitive primary elections, as they overcame racism, gender bias and obstacles within the Democratic Party. Congratulations to Jahana Hayes, the former national teacher of the year who just became the first Black women ever elected to Congress in Connecticut. #ElectionNight #Midterms2018 #RepresentTheVote https://t.co/BFuTdEpje8 — NewsOne (@newsone) November 7, 2018 Racism was an effective GOP tool The Republican base responded to racist dog whistles in several elections. Ron DeSantis infamously warned Florida voters not to “ monkey this up ” by electing his rival Andrew Gillum, who is African American. Within days, Florida residents began to receive racist robocalls that mocked Gillum. Stacey Abrams was also targeted with racist robocalls in Georgia shortly after Trump called her unqualified to be governor of Georgia before holding a rally for her GOP rival Brian Kemp . “I heard people were making racist robocalls in my name against Stacey Abrams, who I am one hundred percent for, in Georgia,” Oprah said on Instagram. “I just want to say: Jesus don’t like ugly … And we know what to do about that: vote. Tomorrow show up and show out, and vote.” pic.twitter.com/CvK5VP60Az — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) November 6, 2018   Triumph for anti-Trump activism “This was a remarkable wave of grassroots activism that swept across the country — with women and people of color leading the way. From a U.S. House of Representatives that reflects the will of the people to the passage of Amendment 4 in Florida, which restored voting rights to convicted felons, this election was an overwhelming rebuke of Trump and Trumpism, and a show of support for candidates who look like America and campaigned on a bold, forward-looking and inclusive vision,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson .   Vigilance needed to combat voter suppression Fighting against voter suppression is an ongoing struggle that requires tenacity. Georgia emerged as the epicenter for voting rights, where activists filed lawsuits against Kemp to ensure the votes of African Americans were counted. Kemp desperately used every trick in the book to win his election. “Voter suppression played a huge role in the silencing of the political voices of the Black community and all people of color,” the NAACP president said. “As we saw in Georgia and Tennessee, Republicans engaged in a massive voter suppression strategy that has included further rolling back the Voting Rights Act.” GA Secretary of State Brian Kemp stooped to new low in his ongoing efforts to keep black people from voting for ⁦ @staceyabrams ⁩. Voting machines, which fall under his responsibility, were delivered to majority black precincts without any power cords. https://t.co/IxvD4Usoo5 — Jon Cooper (@joncoopertweets) November 6, 2018   Black folks will turn out for midterm elections Black voter turnout was high in 2008 and 2012 when President Barack Obama was running. The numbers tumbled in 2016 . It was unclear what would happen in 2018. Early exit polls suggested that African-Americans showed up in strong numbers for the midterms, according to ABC News . Brian Kemp Pops A Blood Vessel After Stacey Abrams Is ‘Endorsed’ By The New Black Panther Party

Visit link:

S tacey Abrams  has been running for governor of Georgia against Brian Kemp , who is also the secretary of state of Georgia, which means he oversees elections. Kemp was clearly afraid that his racist voter suppression tactics may not seal the deal for him, which is why his latest fear-mongering tactic was so laughable. He exploded on Twitter on Election Day eve that the New Black Panther Party was endorsing Abrams. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction Kemp wrote, “The Black Panther Party is backing my opponent. RT if you think Abrams is TOO EXTREME for Georgia!” See the photo of them below standing in front of a Family Dollar store. The Black Panther Party is backing my opponent. RT if you think Abrams is TOO EXTREME for Georgia! https://t.co/BCjWXdi4la #gapol #gafirst #tcot #gagop — Brian Kemp (@BrianKempGA) November 5, 2018 Kemp also told CBS , “It’s no surprise that militant Black Panthers are armed and patrolling the streets of Georgia for Stacey Abrams. The Black Panthers are a radical hate group with a racist and anti-Semitic agenda. They are dangerous and encourage violence against our men and women in uniform.” The original Black Panther Party, which was founded by Bobby Seale and the late Huey Newton , officially ended in 1982. In 1989 , a fringe organization called The New Black Panther Party began. It has been denounced by original Black Panthers and the even the NAACP. Kemp was clearly jumping on this “endorsement” from a group that has no political or social relevance in the Black community. See Bobby Seale blasting the New Black Panther Party below: Kemp needs to focus on his own extreme ways, like voter suppression, which made former President Jimmy Carter call on him to resign as secretary of state . Brian Kemp’s Latest Move Shows His ‘Desperation,’ Stacey Abrams Says

G eorgia’s Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams dismissed her GOP rival Brian Kemp ’s latest maneuver as a “desperate” attempt to distract voters. SEE ALSO: Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union with Jake Tapper,” the host Jake Tapper  informed Abrams that Kemp, who’s also Georgia secretary of state, opened an investigation of the Georgia Democratic Party into possible cybercrimes. Kemp reportedly alleges that state Democrats may have hacked into Georgia’s voter registration system. “This is a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duty and forced him to allow absentee ballots to be counted,” she said after hearing about Kemp’s allegations for the first time. Abrams could make history on Tuesday as the nation’s first African-American woman governor. Kemp, who oversees the state’s election system, has tried to  use every trick in the book  to suppress the Black vote for the 2018 election. Former President  Jimmy Carter  asked Kemp to  recuse him to ensure a fair election . But Kemp continues to decline. Here's the secret to @staceyabrams ' unapologetically Black journey to the doorsteps of political history… https://t.co/Dx6J4E1zZi #RepresentTheVote @K_JeanPierre pic.twitter.com/fv5K81pWGD — NewsOne (@newsone) November 4, 2018 On Oct. 30,  a federal judge, for a second time , put a halt to his attempt to throw out absentee ballots, predominately targeting voters of color. A separate court upheld those two decisions on Friday . Meanwhile, a white supremacist group is suspected of sending out racist robocalls to an unknown number of Georgia voters, the Associated Press reported on Saturday. The automated calls reportedly included impersonations of Oprah Winfrey , who led a rally on Thursday for Abrams. An Idaho man named Scott Rhodes is believed to be behind the calls through his organization The Road to Power, which is also linked to racist robocalls targeting Tallahassee’s African-American Mayor Andrew Gillum who’s running for governor of Florida. The calls came days after President Donald Trump , who endorsed Kemp, called Abrams unqualified to be governor . “He’s wrong,” Abrams told CNN on Sunday, pointing to her academic and work background. Abrams noted that she was the Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representative for seven years, a deputy city attorney and a successful businesswoman. “I think they are seeing the same numbers we’re seeing. Early voting is up dramatically,” Abrams stated. “We have a plan in place for remarkable turnout on Election Day…and I think they’re (Kemp and Trump) getting scared.” SEE ALSO: Mayor Andrew Gillum Temporarily Suspends Campaign After Shooting In Tallahassee Can Oprah Winfrey Help Stacey Abrams Win Georgia? Trump’s Racist Ad Aims For The Willie Horton Effect, Explained

H istory was repeating itself with the release of President Donald Trump ’s new dog-whistling political ad days before the crucial Midterm elections. It was reminiscent of the Republicans’ infamous Willie Horton spot that exploited white fear of Black men ahead of the 1988 presidential election. See Also: Republicans Are Using Every Racist Stereotype Imaginable For The Midterm Elections Most of the nation learned about Horton from a 53-second ad intended to send white voters flocking to the polls to vote for then-Vice President George H.W. Bush  in theoretical exchange for protection from the alleged hoards of Black criminals. Horton was a convicted murderer who raped a white woman while out of prison under a weekend furlough program. With the debut of his new ad, the president was clearly taking a page from that racist playbook. He tweeted a video on Wednesday that blamed Democrats for allowing an undocumented Mexican immigrant for killing two California deputies and warns that liberals would allow hoards of Hispanic migrants into the country. The video showed deputies removing Luis Bracamontes from a courtroom in February because of his outbursts about killing more cops, during his sentencing. “Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes , killed our people!” reads the opening text of the ad. “Democrats let him stay.” It is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our Country. Vote Republican now! https://t.co/0pWiwCHGbh pic.twitter.com/2crea9HF7G — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 31, 2018 The parallels between each commercial were unavoidable. They are tied together by their blatant use of racism to exploit white fear of Black and brown people. Trump blamed the Democrats for Bracamontes’ crime, and the Horton ad pinned the blame to Bush’s Democratic opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis . Both ads also tell big lies. Massachusetts was not the only state with a furlough program. More than 40 states had similar programs, the Washington Post pointed out in 1988 article. The federal government also had a furlough program in the 1980s. Then-governor Michael Dukakis had supported the prison furlough program, and when he ran for President in 1988, his opponent, George H. W. Bush, used that to his advantage. Bush used America’s racism and fear of Black men to fuel his presidential campaign. pic.twitter.com/wZYfoiERLS — Frederick Joseph (@FredTJoseph) November 1, 2018 Trump was trying to build a case on his false claim that migrants at the nation’s southern border are more likely to enter the country illegally under Democratic rule. The fact is that Trump has deported  fewer undocumented immigrants than President Barack Obama did. The difference is that the Obama administration focused on deporting violent criminals and those who posed a national security threat , while Trump has seemed more interested in sending a message by breaking up families regardless of whether a violent crime was committed. It’s A Halloween Miracle: Reese’s Reveals A Vending Machine That Trades In Unwanted Candy

You Can Trade In Unwanted Halloween Candy For Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups There’s really not much you can find wrong about a holiday that revolves around acquiring as much candy as possible, but sometimes, the goods kids pick up going door-to-door just aren’t the right assortment. Luckily for children in New York , Reese’s knows about the struggles of Halloween candy collection and making sure you get what you actually want, and they’ve got you covered with an innovative vending machine that will let people exchange their bad candy for Reese’s.  “No tricks here,” the company wrote in a tweet announcing it’s 5th Avenue candy converting machine. “Trade in your Halloween candy for Reese’s candy. What’d you expect from the GOAT of Halloween?!” No tricks here. Trade in your Halloween candy for Reese's candy. What'd you expect from the GOAT of Halloween?! #ReesesCandyConverter #NotSorry pic.twitter.com/bTrjF2IFay — REESE'S (@reeses) October 30, 2018 The machine is only going to be active for 5 hours (or until it runs out of the 10,000 cups stored inside) on Halloween night. Lucky children can trade in their Milk Duds for one of the most top-tier candies of all time, a unique experience that raises the question: Why hasn’t this ever been done before?! But that’s not the only thing the peanut butter cup OGs have been in the news for lately. Even though most of us can’t think of anyone who has ever looked at a Reese’s Cup and thought it should be more compact, Hershey’s recently announced plans to launch a new thinner version of the treat with 40% less of the good stuff. “Reese’s Thins” are set to launch in March. “This product is about 40% thinner than the original cup, and it appeals to those consumers who want something sweet with more permissibility,” Hershey North America’s President Michele Buck said on a  recent call with investors . But for today, Reese’s is absolutely killing it for Halloween, and hopefully by next year, they can roll out these vending machines around the US–but maybe they should just keep ’em out year-round. Do y’all wish there was a candy-trading vending machine when you were a kid?!
