Romney beat Rick Santorum by double digits in Tuesday’s primary. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney at his Illinois primary night party Photo: AFP Mitt Romney strung together two solid victories in a row on Tuesday night when he pulled off a decisive win in the Illinois presidential primary, the latest in a series of “must-win” contests in the GOP race to the White House. The former Massachusetts Governor is likely to pull in at least 41 of the 54 delegates at stake following his win over rival Rick Santorum, who he beat by a 47 to 35 percent margin. The other two candidates in the race, Texas congressman Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich hardly campaigned in the state and came in a distant third and fourth, with, respectively, 9 and 8 percent of the vote. “We thank the people of Illinois for this extraordinary victory,” Romney said to supporters gathered in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, according to CNN. “Elections are about choices. Today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois joined millions of people in this country in this cause.” If he gets 41 delegates, Romney’s total to date is 562, which puts him halfway toward the goal of 1,144 needed to clinch the GOP nomination. Once again, he turned his attention away from his fellow candidates an onto President Obama in his victory speech, saying, “It’s time to say this word: enough. We’ve had enough … We know our future’s brighter than these troubled times. We still believe in America, and we deserve a president who believes in us, and I believe in the American people.” Romney was feeling bullish after his huge victory in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico on Saturday, where he took more than 83 percent of the vote and likely all 20 delegates. Pundits said he needed a solid victory in Obama’s former home state in order to tamp down the growing buzz about the potential for a contested GOP convention in August should he fail to get enough delegates to close the deal before then. Though he had a rough week — which included gaffes in P.R. in which he said the nation needs to adopt English as its official language to gain statehood and a remark on Monday in which he claimed the unemployment rate “doesn’t matter to me” — Santorum was still defiant after his Illinois loss. “This is an election about fundamental and foundational things,” the former Pennsylvania Senator said during a gathering in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. “This is an election about not who’s the best person to manage Washington or manage the economy. We don’t need a manager, we need someone who’s going to pull government up by the roots and do something to liberate the private sector in America.” The race now moves on to Louisiana on Saturday, where, once again, Romney will attempt to prove that he can appeal to the party’s conservative base and that he can win in the South. By @KYYellowDog When it comes to actual waste in the federal budget, nothing beats subsidies to oil companies and other fossil fuel follies. They are multiply lethal: economically suicidal, fiscally suicidal and environmentally suicidal. Ending them is a bigger lift than health care reform, but the first huge step is President Obama saying publicly it has to happen. Full transcript here. George Clooney was arrested this morning outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C.. The actor was taking part in an organized demonstration to draw attention to that country’s president, Omar al-Bashir, who is responsible for countless deaths in the region due to his blockade of humanitarian aide. Clooney – who has traveled to the country and said in the past we’re going to face a genocide if action isn’t taken – testified before Congress on Wednesday regarding the “campaign of murder” in that nation. “This is for the government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them and stop starving them. That’s all we ask,” USA Today quotes Clooney as saying after he was handcuffed and taken away today, following repeated warnings to leave the area. Along with his father; U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (Dem.) of Virginia; NAACP President Ben Jealous and others, Clooney was placed in a Secret Service and has been charged with the misdemeanor of disorderly crossing a police line. Said the star’s rep: “They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.”

Karma is indeed a beyotch. Some public breakups go better than others, but the resignation of one exec from Goldman Sachs has turned into a very costly kiss-off for the company. Goldman Sachs lost more than $2 billion after “low drama” exec Greg Smith thrust himself into the global spotlight Wednesday with a very public resignation letter that scathingly denounced his employer. In the trading hours after the op-ed began circulating, the firm’s shares dropped 3.4 percent, the third-biggest decline in the S&P, Bloomberg reports. Smith’s take-that-(high-paid)-job-and-shove-it missive – published as an Op-Ed piece in The New York Times – blasted what he termed Goldman’s “toxic and destructive culture.” The executive director said the storied investment bank is indifferent to the interests of clients, who high-level bosses referred to as “muppets.” He said he attended meetings where the topic of how to help clients never came up. “It’s purely about how we can make the most possible money off of them. If you were an alien from Mars and sat in on one of those meetings, you would believe that a client’s success or progress was not part of the thought process at all,” Smith, 33, wrote in his caustic goodbye note, titled “Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs.” He said that in the last year, “I have seen five different managing directors refer to their own clients as ‘muppets.’” He added: “Today, if you make enough money for the firm (and are not currently an ax murderer) you will be promoted into a position of influence.” Smith, who had worked at Goldman for nearly 12 years and said his clients had a trillion dollars in assets, wrote: “I knew it was time to leave when I realized I could no longer look students in the eye and tell them what a great place this was to work. “I truly believe that this decline in the firm’s moral fiber represents the single most serious threat to its long-term survival.” The no-holds-barred missive was quickly trending on Twitter and triggered an uproar in financial circles. Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein and President Gary Cohn responded in a plainly worded internal memo. “We were disappointed to read the assertions made by this individual that do not reflect our values, our culture and how the vast majority of people at Goldman Sachs think about the firm and the work it does on behalf of our clients,” the memo read. The Op-Ed stunned those close to Smith, who described the ex-Goldman vice president as an unassuming political junkie. “Doing something as publicly as this is quite a surprise,” said a source who knows Smith. “He’s a low-drama type person.” Smith, a Ping-Pong whiz from South Africa, is single. He interned for Goldman at Stanford University, then scored a full-time position with the firm in 2001. As he climbed the ranks at the investment bank, Smith, whose dad worked as a pharmacist, lived a lifestyle true to his roots, a source said. He rented an apartment and never bought a car. In 2010, he moved to London to work as the head of the firm’s U.S. equity derivatives business in Europe. “He doesn’t fit the stereotype of a Wall Street type,” said a person close to Smith. “He was more concerned with having enough money for people in his life who were important to him than spending it on luxury items.” Experts estimated that Smith, a mid-level executive, probably was paid modestly by banking standards – less than $750,000 a year. Wow, this is legendary stuff. And to think, he said all that and he wasn’t even Goldman “sacked.” Source More On Bossip!
