Kahlil Greene officially became the first black student to be elected to the position in the university’s 318-year history. View this post on Instagram I’m super excited to officially announce that I will serve as your Yale College Council President alongside Grace Kang for the 2019-2020 school year. Let’s work as a community to make this campus a better place! A post shared by Kahlil Greene (@big_kah_una) on Apr 12, 2019 at 6:33pm PDT The Montgomery County, Maryland native couldn’t be more excited about his new position and he’s hoping to affect change. “I feel like I wanted to kind of amplify the voices of the underserved communities on campus, especially students of color. So being the first black president, I feel like I’m in a position where I can really do that,” said Greene to Fox 5 D.C. His election, he added “symbolizes the progress the university has made over the years,” but also adds that there’s still much to be done. “I think that we can be a more diverse and inclusive campus and I’m grateful for the role that I’ll have in making that happen.” Only 7 percent of the Ivy League institution’s student population is Black, so this is a major milestone in the grand scheme of things. This is possibly the first of many leadership roles for Greene. Greene is currently majoring in economics and political science at the Ivy League institution and revealed that he is considering a career in politics.
T he National Association of Black Journalists is on a mission to combat the negative portrayals of Black men in the media. For the third consecutive year, the organization will host its “Black Male Media Project” as an avenue to empower and inspire Black men to reclaim their narratives. The organization has been dedicated to the advocacy of Black journalists worldwide. The Black Male Media Project was created as a safe space to foster discussions surrounding everything from the need for more diversity and inclusion in newsrooms to the improvement of positive Black male representation. One of the panels, dubbed #MoreThanMugshots, will take a deep dive into how Black men are portrayed in news coverage. The event is also utilized to align Black men with mentoring and networking opportunities. As part of the global event—which is slated to take place on June 1—nearly 20 NABJ chapters within the U.S. and other parts of the world will host workshops, panels, forums. There will be events hosted in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Philadelphia and other major cities. The organization hopes that the movement transcends beyond the physical safe spaces that they’ve created as part of the event and encourages individuals to connect and spread awareness about the efforts digitally through the use of the hashtag #InspireBlackMen on social media. “The overarching goal of BMMP is to counteract negative images of Black men often portrayed in the media,” said NABJ President Sarah Glover said in a statement. “We encourage all newsrooms across the country to make this a priority because how Black men are portrayed in the news can have a direct impact on issues such as racial profiling, discriminatory hiring practices, violence and more. Black men are intellectuals, professionals, innovators, spiritual leaders, activists, fathers, brothers and sons just like any other man and should be treated and portrayed that way.” Forums like the Black Male Media Project are needed. According to a study conducted by the Rutgers School of Public Health, there is a direct correlation between the media’s negative portrayal of Black men and how they are treated by the police. A tlanta-bred rapper T.I. tragically lost his sister Precious Harris in February, but he is turning his pain into something positive and ensuring that her legacy is kept alive through the creation of a scholarship fund. According to NBC News T.I.—whose real name is Clifford Harris —recently awarded a college student with $25,000 to put towards her education. Rapper T.I. is keeping the memory of his late sister alive by awarding an Arkansas college student and single mother a $25,000 scholarship. https://t.co/JVbR44KUQL — NBC News (@NBCNews) May 10, 2019 The Precious Chapman Scholarship is a collaborative effort between Harris, the United Negro College Fund, and VH1. Tierani Scott —a college junior who attends Philander Smith College in Arkansas—was awarded with the scholarship during VH1’s Dear Mama: A Love Letter to Mom special. Scott, who is a single mother, exudes excellence academically and in her personal life. She serves as the president of her class, has an outstanding grade point average, and leads a group called Queen Women’s Empowerment Organization all while balancing motherhood. She majors in sociology. Harris said that he wanted to select a recipient who embodied the same values as his late sister. “This year’s recipient is like my beloved sister,” he said. “It is our hope that this scholarship will help her continue on her path to do great things in her future.” Philanthropy is nothing new to Harris. He has continually utilized his platform as an avenue to give back. In April he teamed up with Scrapp Deleon and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to bail out non-violent offenders in time for Easter. Earlier this year he was honored by the Georgia Senate for his dedication to bettering the Atlanta community. “So many times, our answer to fixing things is “I’m gonna make some money and leave all these people behind.” There’s rarely an intent to get rich and make where you came from better for generations to come,” he said in an interview with Inc. “It’s extremely ambitious, but I’ve worked myself to a place where I should be the one leading the charge. In my mind, that’s what it means to be king.” SEE ALSO: T.I. Teams Up With Georgia Church To Bail Out Nonviolent Offenders For Easter Georgia Senate Honors T.I. This June, 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way will premiere as Americans consider moving overseas to be with the ones they love. These new, fresh faces are bringing a lot of new drama as catfishing, lies, and culture shock make for some very hard choices. But one couple isn't so new, and will in fact be very familiar to 90 Day Fiance fans. See the trailer and meet the cast, below: Jenny and Sumit The romance between 60-year-old Jenny and 30-year-old Sumit began like all great love stories. … With catfishing, we mean. Yes, Sumit catfished Jenny from India, but eventually came clean to her. You would think that his big revelation would be the end of things, but she actuall forgave him … and traveled out to India to meet him. The trip was supposed to last for four months, but was cut short. Why? Because Sumit's parents adamantly disapprove. Despite that, Jenny is prepared to leave behind her entire family — including her grandkids — and move to India forever. But as you can see in the trailer, Sumit's friends are uncertain that it's going to work without his parents' acceptance; he's keeping it a secret. And Jenny is going to have to become accustomed to a radically different culture. Tiffany and Ronald Tiffany is a beautiful 27-year-old woman from Maryland. During a trip to South Africa, she met 29-year-old Ronald and fell in love with him. He proposed … and she said yes. That was when the other shoe dropped: Ronald's extensive gambling habit and his criminal background. Now, Ronald fessed up and even entered a rehab program. But Tiffany has to make this choice, not only for herself, but for her 8-year-old son. Is she willing to uproot their entire lives and move to South Africa, all for the sake of love? She's not so sure, and she can't shake the feeling that there is more that Ronald is not telling her. Laura and Aladin 51-year-old Laura is American, and her attraction to 29-year-old physical trainer and all-around hottie Aladin is no mystery. After eight months of chatting on Facebook, she traveled out to Qatar to meet him. It took them all of three days of speaking in person to become engaged. Laura fears that this may be too good to be true, a fear that will surely be shared by many viewers. But it's not all shortless video chat sessions. Laura's making some real sacrifices. She'll need to overcome culture shock as she moves to a deeply conservative and restrictive culture. Laura will also be leaving her two dogs behind in Florida, which most people would find unthinkable. She'll have to plan a wedding and make a good impression upon Aladin's family, all while trying to figure out if there's a catch. Corey and Evelin 31-year-old Corey is from Washington state, and met 26-year-old Evelin while visiting her small fishing village in Ecuador. They have been dating for four years, and Corey wants to take things to the next level. The problem? Evelin does not want to move to the United States. Corey has already spent tens of thousands of dollars on Evelin and her family, which is … a lot. (We get that Evelin is extremely beautiful, but … dude) But moving to live with Evelin will mean leaving behind a lot of standard comforts. This isn't just putting up with crappy wifi — this is a village with poor electricity. And there is no running hot water. (There are so many red flags and dealbreakers … and it's unclear if Evelin is really interested in him) Deavan and Jihoon 22-year-old Deavan was already a single mom when 29-year-old Jihoon flew out to Utah from South Korea to meet her. The meeting went well — very well. So well, in fact, that Deavan got pregnant from their first night together. Deavan would love to marry Jihoon, even if it means moving to South Korea and grappling with a language barrier. But there's been no proposal. She'll want one before she moves with her (soon-to-be) two young children. Also … there's concern that Jihoon's parents won't endorse their relationship, because Deavan got pregnant before there was even an engagement. Paul and Karine Remember when we mentioned familiar faces? 35-year-old Paul and 22-year-old Karine are very, very familiar to fans. Paul and Karine had their baby earlier this year. Paul had initially come to Brazil just to get to know Karine in person before bringing her back to the US. But it turns out that he cannot afford a K-1 visa, so instead, he's taking the extra step of preparing to move to Brazil. This show is going to be a weird experience for Americans to watch. We can't wait.
Kim Kardashian is about to show us a side of her that we have never seen. And honestly, never in a million years thought we would. But the time has finally come — we must all prepare ourselves to meet the new and improved lawyer Kim in her not so red-carpet environment. That’s right. We will actually get to press pause on all the Kardashian clan’s drama and finally get to watch sista Kim do something a little more, well, productive. The reality queen is breaking out of her E! Kingdom and heading on over to the NBC affiliated channel Oxygen to show off her more serious, Elle Woods side. Oxygen Media has recently greenlighted five new series, including Kim’s new show, Kim Kardashian: The Justice Project (working title). The new 2-hour documentary will follow Kim’s campaign for criminal justice reform and her efforts to grant freedom for Americans who she believes have been wronged by the justice system. According to a press release, the project promises “an exclusive, never before seen look inside her mission to tackle one of America’s most controversial subjects.” Kim is fully on board and is serving as executive producer alongside Bunim Murray Production with Gil Goldschein, Julie Pizzi and Farnaz Farjam. The new program comes after Kim recently publicized her decision to become a lawyer and after she freed Alice Marie Johnson. Alice happens to be her most notable case , though we recently learned she is not the only person to have been pardoned by Mrs. Kardashian-West. According to TMZ , Kim has secretly freed over 17 inmates — all in the past 3 months! She has secured pardons for several of these first-time non-violent offenders who were locked up on drug charges, many of whom were serving life sentences. Kim’s team — who deals more with the legalities, rather than footing the bills or landing a meeting with the President — consists of her lawyer, Brittany K. Barnett, along with lawyer MiAngel Cody. Barnett says without Kim’s financial support, none of this would’ve been possible. But don’t be fooled, she does way more than just handle all the legal fees. “Our relationships with our clients don’t end when they are freed. [Kim] is truly dedicated to the issue,” Barnett said. “I work personally with her, we are really grateful.” And while some may find it unusual that Kim hasn’t been sharing these success stories with her 60 million Twitter followers, Barnett says it’s because they have all been extremely “busy.” “[Kim] has been on the phone as we’ve told clients they are coming home,” Barnett said. “I think one, she really wants to be taken seriously, so she is really focused on learning the system and the people who are directly impacted.” “That takes a lot of focus, too. It’s not always amplified with social media.” But we can now rest easy knowing that we will still get to keep up with this Kardashian as she works to reform the prison system. This upcoming documentary is part of a large slate of new programming from Oxygen with Ice-T, Mark Whalberg, Nancy Grace and more all involved with prominent issues. “Oxygen is tremendously excited to work with some of the biggest names in the industry on such important projects,” Rod Aissa, executive vice president of original programming and development for Oxygen, said in a statement. “This year we’ve increased our original hours by more than 30 percent, and we’ll keep ramping up our programming efforts as more fans flock to the network to experience the best in class content.” Premiere dates have yet to be released, but we are so ready. Source: Brooks Kraft / Getty In today’s edition of “the President is trippin’”, Donald Trump went out of his way to congratulate the NFL Draft’s number two pick Nick Bosa without even acknowledging number one pick, Heisman Trophy winning Black man Kyler Murray . In true Trump form, he took to Twitter to be willfully shady, writing: Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft. You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 27, 2019 The petty tweet caused an uproar on social media with folks pointing out that Murray — who also made history as the only player ever to be drafted in the first round of the NFL and MLB — should be congratulated as well. You do realize that another player went #1 overall in the draft, right ahead of Bosa, right? His name is Kyler Murray pic.twitter.com/xiOkXTMm3Y — Ed Krassenstein (@EdKrassen) April 27, 2019 Wow.. it’s been a minute since we had a president.. anyway… Congratulations to Kyler Murray on being picked number ONE in the NFL Draft. Source: Sergio Flores / Getty Elizabeth Warren Talks Comparative Health Care Treatment Between Black And White Women Elizabeth Warren wants to be President of The United States. She can’t be President of The United States if she doesn’t pass the smell test with African-American women. During the She The People Forum in Houston on Wednesday, Warren spoke directly to the issues that she has her sights on that would directly improve the lives of Black women. Here’s what she said according to FoxNews : “And there is a specific problem, as you rightly identified, for women of color who are three, four times more likely to die in childbirth,” Warren said. “And here’s the thing, even after we do the adjustments for income, for education, this is true across the board. This is true for well-educated African American women, for wealthy African American women, and the best studies that I’m seeing put it down to just one thing, prejudice,” she added. “That doctors and nurses don’t hear African American women’s medical issues the same way that they hear the same things from white women.” That’s pretty direct. Warren’s plan to rectify this problem is to offer incentives to hospitals who manage to balance the infant mortality rate and remove certain funding if the rate begins to increase. What do you think about Warren’s take? Is this something that would make you vote for her in 2020?
