True cost of war much more than a staggering trillion dollars

The cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has surpassed one trillion dollars, according to the Congressional Budget Office. While this figure is staggering, a Libertarian presidential hopeful said that the real cost of these conflicts to our economy and our liberty is even more staggering. “One trillion dollars is an almost incomprehensible number, but what is even more incomprehensible is the fact that most of that cost is borrowed money,” said R. Lee Wrights, former Libertarian Party national vice chair and the editor and co-founder of Liberty for All, an online free speech magazine. “The federal government borrows about 43 cents of every dollar it spends, and then uses it to build schools, roads and hospitals in countries where we're partly responsible for destroying that infrastructure,” he said. “That's not only insane, it's immoral.” Wrights said that he is considering seeking the presidential nomination because he believes the Libertarian message in 2012 should be a loud and unequivocal call to stop all war. Wrights, 52, was born in Winston-Salem and lived in North Carolina most of his life. He now lives and works in Texas. “The Libertarian Party faces a critical test in 2012 and I want to make sure that we're up to the challenge,” Wrights said. “The Libertarian message in 2012 must be loud and clear – stop all wars! Stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, stop the war on drugs and alternative lifestyles, stop the war on civil liberties.” “When we first invaded Iraq we were told that the 'war would pay for itself' because Iraq had the oil resources,” Wrights said. He noted that Paul Wolfowitz, then assistant secretary of defense, told Congress in March 2003, “There's a lot of money to pay for this. It doesn't have to be U.S. taxpayer money. We are dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction, and relatively soon.” “That hasn't happened. Instead, the federal government has simply printed or borrowed the money to rebuild what's been destroyed,” Wrights said. “Politicians are treating war spending like an open checkbook. As long as they have checks, they keep writing them without bothering to balance the account.” The 2010 military budget is $700 billion. In real terms, defense spending is more today than at any time during the Cold War, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, according to Doug Bandow of the Cato Institute. “To justify its budget, the Defense Department said it was not enough to have a military capable of deterring or responding to aggression,” Wrights said. “Incredibly, defense officials actually claimed it was ‘vital’ the United States be ‘a force for good by engaging with and helping positively to shape the world.’” “Our founder's would be appalled,” Wrights said. “They predicted that war would be the most dreaded threat to our liberties. They told us that from war would proceed mean debt, taxes, fraud and degeneracy of morals. They warned us that no nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” Wrights has pledged that 10 percent of all donations to his campaign will be spent for ballot access so that the stop all war message can be heard in all 50 states. http://www.examiner.com/libertarian-in-raleigh/true-cost-of-war-much-more-than-a… added by: shanklinmike

Open Thread: ‘Will Barack Obama Be a One-term President?’

“Yes, he might last that long,” Politico’s Roger Simon states in response to his own question. Honest to goodness, the man just does not get it. He might be forced to pull a Palin and resign before his first term is over. He could go off and write his memoirs and build his presidential library. (Both would be half-size, of course.) I am not saying Obama is not smart; he is as smart as a whip. I am just saying he does not understand what savvy first-term presidents need to understand: You have to stay on message, follow the polls, listen to your advisers (who are writing the message and taking the polls) and realize that when it comes to doing what is right versus doing what is expedient, you do what is expedient so that you can get reelected and do what is right in the second term. If at all possible. And it will help your legacy. And not endanger the election of others in your party. And not hurt the brand. Or upset people too much. Do you concur with that assessment, or is Simon being too cynical? Remember to give some examples to back up your point.

Shoot-the-President Game at Catholic Carnival

http://media.lehighvalleylive.com/slate-belt_impact/photo/obama-game-c01f638d96d… Have you ever been to a church carnival? No, I don't mean a church service with a carnival atmosphere. I mean an actual carnival put on by a church as a fundraiser. Sounds like it could be a fun, family-oriented way for a church to raise money. Or it could simply be an exercise in far-right hatred. A Catholic church in Roseto, PA, is in the news because of game at their carnival in which attendees were encouraged to shoot darts at the image of an African American man holding a health care bill and wearing the presidential seal. Of course, the owner of the company responsible for providing the games now claims that it was not meant to depict President Obama. Sure it wasn't. The real story, as far as I'm concerned, is how Rev. Jim Prior responded when attendees complained. “We’re used to this kind of bigotry and prejudice, and we abhor it but it’s the way of the world,” Prior said. “Even the Divine Father himself is vilified in today’s culture.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Bristol Palin: Engaged to Levi Johnston!

Having recently rekindled their romance, Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are now engaged – and not just to bolster her mom’s poll numbers this time! “We got engaged two weeks ago,” the daughter of Sarah Palin tells Us Weekly . “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.” Bristol Palin is 19 and Levi Johnston is 20. They famously called off their previous engagement weeks after welcoming son Tripp in December 2008. After an icy period of estrangement, nasty accusations and PR wars, they reconnected a few months ago while working out custody plans for Tripp. “I really thought we were over,” Levi said. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking, and then we took Tripp for a walk.” Bristol and Levi now and during their previous fake engagement . She says when Levi Johnston left that night, “we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: ‘I miss you. I love you.'” “‘I want to be with you again’ … I was in shock.” Perhaps the most amazing part, if you don’t believe this is being embellished to sell magazines of course, is that the former Republican Vice Presidential nominee has been kept in the dark about the youngsters’ plans … until now! Says Bristol: “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board.” But will she? Sarah and Todd Palin said in a statement: “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” Sounds like a thumbs-up to us … or not? Either way, congratulations to the young couple. We’re happy for them … but still, we gotta ask … Will Bristol and Levi last this time?

Despite Obama’s Lofty Words, Scientific Integrity Rules Are Lagging

Last March, President Obama promised he'd have a strategy for restoring scientific integrity to the federal government on hand by July 29. A full year later, federal agencies still have not received any new directives and some government scientists say that conditions have not improved noticeably since Obama took power. Obama made scientific integrity an issue in his presidential campaign, and his March 9, 2009 memo outlined a series of high-minded principles — advocating, for instance, for “transparency in the preparation, identification, and use of scientific and technological information in policymaking.” The memo also ordered John Holdren, the director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to develop guidelines “designed to guarantee scientific integrity throughout the executive branch.” Obama gave Holdren 120 days. That deadline came and went. And Friday is its one-year anniversary. The White House won't explain what's holding things up. In a June 18 posting on the White House website, Holdren simply said that “the process has been more laborious and time-consuming than expected at the outset.” He set a new deadline, saying he would deliver “a high-quality product” to Obama “in the next few weeks.” (That was three weeks ago.) Holdren, however, also tried to argue that the directives weren't really a big deal. “There should not be any doubt that these principles have been in effect — that is, binding on all Executive departments and agencies — from the date of issue of the Memorandum on March 9, 2009,” he wrote. The hold-up, he insisted, only affected “recommendations to the President on what further instructions he might issue in augmentation of these principles in order to advance the goal of achieving the highest level of scientific integrity across the Executive Branch.” (Holdren's italics.) But that, people who follow the issue closely tell the Huffington Post, is baloney. “You can't enforce a principle, without a rule,” said Jeff Ruch, executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a whistleblower group that he describes as “sort of a shelter for battered staff.” Ruch's group is calling attention to the one-year anniversary of the blown deadline in hopes of spurring action. A Brief History of Presidential Promises to End US Oil Addiction, by Jon Stewart (Video)

Image via Yannig Roth Each and every one of the last 8 presidents, at one point during their presidencies, announced to the public that the United States needs to end its dependence on oil. Whether it was Carter, Nixon, or even George W., they all sounded the call for a shift towards cleaner, safer energies. Obama did it again last Tuesday night. Of course, we all know where each of those respective calls for action have landed us … Here, Jon Stewart takes us on a farcical tour of the history of presiden… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Conservative-Bashing Hypocrites at WaPo Publish Smerconish Attacking Cable News for ‘Polarized Politics’

A month ago, The Washington Post editorial page was dropping rhetorical bombs on conservative Republican Ken Cuccinelli for investigating ClimateGate. The headline at the top of the paper’s May 7 editorial page (now scrubbed online) was “Mr. Cuccinelli’s witch hunt: Virginia’s attorney general declares war on academic freedom and climate reality.” It began: WE KNEW Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R) had declared war on reality. Now he has declared war on the freedom of academic inquiry as well. We hope that Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) and the University of Virginia have the spine to repudiate Mr. Cuccinelli’s abuse of the legal code. If they do not, the quality of Virginia’s universities will suffer for years to come. That’s an unsigned staff editorial, not some fulminating columnist with a byline. But these very same Washington Post editorial page staffers offered space on Friday to alleged conservative Michael Smerconish to trash cable news bookers at Fox News and CNN for wrecking America with “polarized politics.”   The producer asked whether CNN could identify me as a conservative. “Well, if someone who supports harsh interrogation, thinks we should be out of Iraq but in Pakistan, doesn’t care much if two guys hook up, and believes we should legalize pot and prostitution is conservative, fine,” I replied. More silence… Another time, a Fox News producer invited me to appear on a program to discuss then-candidate Barack Obama. I was told they were “looking for someone who would say he’s cocky and that his cockiness will hurt him, if not in the primary, definitely in the general election against McCain.” I declined. A few hours later, the same producer made a new pitch: “What about a debate off the top of the show on whether or not Hillary is trustworthy? We have someone who says she is and we’re looking for someone who says she isn’t.” The message of both episodes is clear: There is no room for nuance. Either you offer a consistent (possibly artificial) ideological view or you often don’t get a say…. All of which leaves more elected officials beholden to the fringe elements of their parties, which in turn means less gets done. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, and it is robbing our televisions and radios of the substantive dialogue the country desperately needs, while leaving our politics a petty and unproductive mess. Other than favoring the legalized pot and prostitutes, Smerconish is often a supporter of cringing moderation, so cringing and opportunistic that you switch parties when your polls look bad. Recall Smerconish in April helping NBC proclaim a devastated Republican Party when Arlen Specter swapped parties: “The Republican Party in the aftermath of the presidential race should have come to him and tried to clone him. They need more Arlen Specters.” It’s Specter right now who looks like he’s leaving politics as a petty and unproductive mess.

Girl Power

I am incredibly inspired by my dad’s selection of Governor Palin as the first woman Vice Presidential candidate of the Republican Party. This is a great moment for young women everywhere who can look to her as a role model. As I was standing on stage, I found myself getting emotional about today’s historic event and the evolution in the role of women as leaders in politics. I couldn’t be more proud of my father! I will have more to say tomorrow but wanted to give everyone a quick update.

First Debate – Part 1

Attending the first Presidential debate – an incredible, historical event in its own right – with your dad as one of the candidates, is an amazing experience. I was a bundle of nerves and excitement immediately prior to and during the debate as the world watched on TV. I was so proud of him throughout the entire 90-minute program. The Ole Miss campus in Oxford was a beautiful location and the hosts were very gracious. Below is the first series of pictures from the debate. I’ll post the second set tomorrow. From here we go to New York and then to California where I’ll campaign for my dad – without my parents! Song of the Day: “TKO” by Le Tigre

A mouse in the (White) House? Mystery rodent disrupts Obama press conference

President Barack Obama was upstaged by a rodent as he spoke on Wall Street legislation. Mr Obama had just begun a Rose Garden statement lauding the end of a US Senate filibuster on his financial overhaul when a rodent dashed out of the bushes to his right, just outside the Oval Office. As photographers snapped away in the sun-drenched garden, the creature scurried straight past the grey podium with the presidential seal and made a bee-line for another set of bushes to Mr Obama's left. It's not clear if the president could even see the animal, but he didn't show any reaction. And he concluded his statement minutes later, returning to his office without answering a few shouted questions on other topics. Opinion was divided on the identity of the rodent. 'I would partially rule out rat,' said Russell Link, a wildlife biologist who works for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. 'That's due to the lack of a tail that is typically equal to body length.' After viewing a photograph of the surprising scurry, Mr Link said: 'My suspicion is it's a vole, commonly called a 'meadow mouse' out our way.' The question is: which one is the pipsqueak? Come to your own conclusions. added by: crystalman
