Historic Philadelphia Burial Site Under Playground To Honor 5,000 Freed Slaves With New Memorial

Markus Scholz/picture alliance via Getty Images Philadelphia Burial Site To Honor Freed Slaves With Memorial Philadelphia’s Weccacoe Playground will soon be transformed into a historic memorial in honor of thousands of freed slaves. Discovered back in 2008 by historian Terry Buckalew, the community playground originally served as an African American Burial Ground for members of the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church — which was purchased by the church in 1810. Archaeologists believe that an estimated 5,000 freed black slaves are buried 18 inches beneath the concrete, according to  Associated Press . Now, after years of deliberating amongst community members, city officials announced plans last month to renovate a section of the playground into the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site. “This is an opportunity to fix something that fell off of our radar, and it’s a teachable moment for these young children,” Leslie Patterson-Tyler tells AP . “It’s already a gathering place, so let’s continue to gather in this place and talk about what was.” Construction of the historical site — which will be located in Philly’s Queen Village neighborhood — will require the dismantling of a “well-used” community center to make way for the memorial. Rev. Mark Tyler went on to note that he hopes the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site will inspire thought-provoking dialogue amongst all parents and children. “I think that would be a wonderful way to honor the ancestors who are buried there,” he said to the Associated Press . “To help these children write a new and better American story.”

Tina Turner’s Oldest Son Commits Suicide

Terrible news today out of the music world: Tina Turner’s oldest son, Craig, was found dead at his home in Studio City, California at 12:58 p.m. this afternoon. He was 59 years old. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office has confirmed this tragedy, telling multiple outlets that Craig was discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reportedly arrived at his residence just after noon and pronounced him dead just a short while later, at the scene. The aforementioned spokesperson told the press that a 911 call was placed, although it’s unclear just who made the call. Says the spokesperson in a little more detail: “The call was reported as a suicide, gun shot wound. The next of kin has been notified. There will be an autopsy done and there is an investigator at the scene.” Craig was born when Tina was 18 years old, prior to her up-and-down marriage Ike Turner. Once Tina and Ike were husband and wife, however, Ike adopted four-year old Craig. (His biological father was a saxophonist named Raymond Hill, who performed with Ike’s band.) This awful piece of news of comes as the legendary artist is making a rare trip outside her new home country of Switzerland to attend Paris Fashion Week events. Craig Turner worked in the real estate business in the San Fernando Valley. His mother is, simply put, one of the most successful and respected solo singers in history. She counts “What’s Love Got to Do With it” and “Proud Mary” among her best-known singles. Tina also starred in such movies as Mad Max: Thunderdome and Last Action Hero. Craig’s suicide, meanwhile, follows a sad rash of similar events around the entertainment world. Over the past few weeks alone, iconic fashiond designer Kate Spade has committed suicide, while beloved chef and author Anthony Bourdain has done the same. Both these stars took their own lives via hanging. Spade was 56 years old and Bourdain was 61. May they rest in peace and may Craig Turner rest in peace. Our thoughts go out to Tina and all of her loved ones. View Slideshow: 28 Stars Who Committed Suicide

Luann de Lesseps FUMES at Ramona Singer: You Betrayed Me, She-Devil!!

Bethenny Frankel and Carole Radziwill aren’t the only The Real Housewives of New York City stars to have a frittered friendship . Luann de Lesseps and Ramona Singer weren’t exactly joined at the hip before, but now Luann is taking her to task. Why? Because Ramona betrayed her trust when she was at her most vulnerable — right after she got out of rehab. If you watch The Real Housewives of New York City online , you already know what went down on the episode titled: ” Arrest and Relaxation. ” But one explosive conflict from the episode really merits a closer look. On Wednesday night’s episode of RHONY , Luann did not mince words when she referred to a group photo that Ramona shared with the world. “The she-devil strikes again,” Luann announced. She-devil can either be very confrontational (because yikes!) or very complimentary (it’s what Red Sonja is called, after all), but Luann meant it in the worst sense. Luann explains: “I really feel like Ramona invaded my privacy by putting a picture out of me when nobody knew where I was.” The Countess was in a very vulnerable place in her life and did not feel encouraged by the entire world knowing what she was up to just yet. “And now,” Luann says. “The whole world knows I’m out of rehab.” She wanted to let the world know on her terms, when the time was right. She feels that Ramona robbed her of that opportunity. What’s more is that Luann fears that Ramona’s thoughtless photo — which, in fairness, Ramona did later delete — could impact her appearance in court. “I have a court case coming up,” Luann laments.”I don’t need more press!” Being a reality star has its pitfalls. Luann explains why publicity is a problem, saying: “I don’t need pictures of me and the press making guesses at what I’m up to.” The rest of us might look at a headline that says Luann de Lesseps: Out of Rehab and Drinking Already? and question its veracity. But if a judge sees that kind of speculation, it might change Luann’s life forever. Since the news was out in the open anyway, Luann did make it official with a post of her own. “It’s good to be home,” Luann wrote to her fans and followers. “I’m doing great. Spending time with friends and family. Thanking everyone for your continued good wishes and support.” “My return to New York is supposed to be on my terms,” Luann tells the camera.. “I just feel like I got the rug pulled out of me.” She felt shocked that others knew before she was ready to tell the world. On RHONY , she’s seen giving Ramona a piece of her mind. “You put a picture up and now Luann is the talk of the town again,” Luann laments. She does acknowledge that she knew that it would happen sooner or later — but that she feels betrayed that it was by Ramona’s hand. “It’s inevitable that I will be in the press again, I just don’t want my friends to drive it,” Luann says. “You opened up a can of worms for me.” “These are hurtful things. You’re hurting me,” Luann explained. “You have to be more respectful and thoughtful about your friends.” Ramona was shocked, having not realized that she was doing anything wrong. “We also post group shots! It’s a beautiful picture,” Ramona said, at first being defensive. Ramona did realize that she was in the wrong and apologized, saying: “You didn’t tell me not to post. … I’m sorry.” Ramona, to her credit, became very apologetic and worked to make things right. “I’m disappointed in myself,” Ramona admitted. “I wasn’t thinking. Now I understand. … I made a huge mistake. This was bad. What I did was bad.” Luann also had another bone to pick with Ramona. See, Ramona had been hanging out with Luann’s recent ex, Tom D’Agustino. “There are so many guys on the Upper East Side. Really?” Luann tells the camera. She continues to complain to the camera about Ramona, saying: “You have to go and have drinks with Tom? I knew Ramona wasn’t the brightest tool in the shed, but what an idiot.” To be honest, that seems a little harsh.  “It’s not cool,” Luann said, yelling at Ramona. “If you’re my friend, it’s not cool. What you did, most people would never talk to you again.” Whoa, there. She spoke with him socially. She didn’t bang him. “That is the lowest of the low,” Luann insists, feeling betrayed. “Do you realize that? What you did is the lowest of the low.” Ramona explained that she hadn’t been there to meet with Tom, that they had just happened into each other. “Just because Luann divorced Tom doesn’t mean he’s going to disappear,” Ramona says. “He travels with the same circle as I do,” Ramona continues. “He has the same friends as I do.” That’s one of the big pitfalls of a breakup — everybody knows each other. Ramona then throws some shade, saying: “Listen, if I couldn’t talk with every man Luann ended up being with, I wouldn’t be talking to any men in New York City!” Luann is not amused, however. “You make it worse,” Luann accuses. “You don’t have my best interest at heart and I can’t be around that.” Wow. Capital Gazette Reporter Tweets Horror of Latest Mass Shooting

Another mass shooting has taken place in America. On Thursday afternoon, a gunman broke into the offices of The Capital Gazette in Maryland, opening fire and killing at least five individuals and wounding many others. According to law enforcement officials, an unnamed suspect is in custody, but very little is known about him at the moment. (UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as 38-year old Jarrod Ramos. He once filed a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper that was thrown out.) We can confirm, however, that the suspect was found hiding under a desk inside the building and that a package (or carrying device of some kind), which contained a flammable liquid, was discovered near him on the ground. Police have also said the suspect was an adult male and that he used a “long gun” to carry out his massacre. More than 170 people were in the building during the shooting; those who did not suffer any injuries were evacuated and taken to a reunification area. Among those unharmed was reporter Phil Davis, who has made headlines for Tweeting a few details from the awful incident. “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload,” Davis Tweeted at one point on Thursday, adding: “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad. “A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead.” In a later interview posted on the newspaper’s website, Davis said the scene inside the newspaper’s office “was like a war zone,” expounding: “I’m a police reporter. “I write about this stuff – not necessarily to this extent, but shootings and death – all the time. But as much as I’m going to try to articulate how traumatizing it is to be hiding under your desk, you don’t know until you’re there and you feel helpless.” Elsewhere, Jimmy DeButts, an editor at the Capital Gazette, Tweeted that he was “devastated & heartbroken,” explaining why it is he and his co-workers do the jobs they do: We keep doing more with less. We find ways to cover high school sports, breaking news, tax hikes, school budgets & local entertainment.. We are there in times of tragedy. “We do our best to share the stories of people, those who make our community better. Please understand, we do all this to serve our community.” Along these lines, the newspaper has said it has no plans of going on hiatus or taking any sort of break. “I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow,” reporter Chase Cook Tweeted. President Donald Trump, has has often referred to the press as the “enemy of the people,” something he reiterated two days ago at a rally in South Carolina, chimed in as follows on social media: “Prior to departing Wisconsin, I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene.” Added the First Lady on Twitter: “Today’s violence at the Capital Gazette was tragic & evil. “My heart goes out to all affected in this brutal & senseless attack, & I send thoughts & prayers for comfort to the friends, family & colleagues of those killed & injured.” Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said that officers were on the scene “very, very quickly, I think it was around 60 seconds or a minute-and-a-half” after receiving the call about the active shooter. As of this writing, the suspect is said to not be cooperating with police. Here is a look at the building where the shooting took place: Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has also released a statement about this shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, saying at a press conference: “We are terribly saddened by the loss of five members of our community in today’s heinous shooting. “The Capital Gazette is my hometown paper, and I have the greatest respect for the fine journalists, and all the men and women, who work there. “They serve each day to shine light on the world around us so that we might see with more clarity and greater understanding. “There is no place in our society for this kind of hatred and violence, and the individual responsible for this horrendous crime must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” UPDATE :  Anne Arundel Police Deputy Chief Bill Krampf has now confirmed this was a “targeted attack” against the newspaper.

Melania Trump Wears "I Really Don’t Care, Do U?" Jacket … WTF?!?!

Are we living, not in the real world, but in a heavy-handed political cartoon? Because it’s looking that way. Melania Trump went to visit one of the children internment facilities that her husband’s administration has been using to hold immigrant parents separately from their parents. But some people feel that she really didn’t care. They think that because she wore a jacket stating, in massive letters, that she really didn’t care. (Here’s a clearer look at the jacket’s words — it’s not an uncommon sight on Instagram models) This is … positively surreal. See, while an Instagram model might show off a sassy jacket for whatever reason, the context of the First Lady’s visit is not. She was visiting an internment camp that holds children that her husband’s policy has separated from their parents as they are all detained. While some of the detained unlawfully crossed the border (a federal misdemeanor, not unlike using the American flag in advertising) and others arrived to seek asylum, which is legal, the humanitarian issue was that children were being kept in cages. Yes, cages. While ICE contacted news outlets to inform them that they objected to the characterization of the fenced-in enclosures that held innocent children as “cages,” even ICE admitted that it was not inaccurate. While within the facility, Melania asked “How can I help to reunite these children with their families as quickly as possible?” Only her husband, or Congress, can make that happen right now.

Lincoln Adim is a Liar, Bachelorette Producers Harshly Allege!

Becca Kurfin claims she fell in love with two men on her current season of The Bachelorette. But that predicament is nothing compared to the one producers of this show now find themselves in after word spread on Wednesday of Lincoln Adim’s past run-in with the law. Lincoln is a suitor on Season 14 and, as of this past Monday’s episode, is still in the running for Becca’s heart. You’ll need to visit our section of The Bachelorette spoilers in order to learn just how far he advances in the weeks ahead – but you only need to scroll down a little bit in order to learn the trouble Lincoln has gotten into. In May of 2016, Adim sexually accosted a woman on board a cruise ship. We don’t even need to use the word allegedly in this case because he was actually convicted of this illegal action two years later, just a few days before The Bachelorette premiered. Press Secretary Jake Wark of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has said that Lincoln has to register as a sex offender for his behavior, while stating the following in regard to his conviction: The judge ordered him to stay away from the victim and attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week during those two years. If he complies with the judge’s orders, he will not have to serve out his term, but if he fails to comply with those orders or re-offends, he could be ordered to serve out the year behind bars. This was and is clearly a pretty big deal. So the natural next question to ask is this: How the heck did Lincoln get approved for the show?!? How were producers unaware of his assault charge and subsequent conviction? Simple, they now say in response: Because Lincoln is a liar! In a statement released by the press in response to this new Bachelorette scandal, the studio behind the ABC reality series says the following: “No one on The Bachelorette production had any knowledge about the incident or charges when Lincoln Adim was cast, and he himself denied ever having engaged in or having been charged with any sexual misconduct.” Well… yeah, right? No d’uh! Of course Lincoln would deny this. Why didn’t the team behind The Bachelorette use all the resources at their disposal to find the truth themselves?  Continues this production company statement: “We employ a well-respected and highly experienced third party who has done thousands of background checks consistent with industry standards to do a nationwide background check in this case. “The report we received did not reference any incident or charge relating to the recent conviction – or any other charges relating to sexual misconduct. The statement concludes: “We are currently investigating why the report did not contain this information, which we will share when we have it.” Fair enough. We’ll be curious to read it. His story resurfaced again this week when the Supreme Court ruled that businesses have a right to deny gay people because of religious beliefs. “No Gays Allowed” started trending on Twitter and Dictionary.com slyly responded by defining “homophobia.” Homophobia is defined as unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.
