Should Men Who Force Sex On Women And Impregnate Them Have Parental Rights? A group of bi-partisan lawmakers are currently working to push legislation forward that would give female survivors of forced sex that resulted in a child the right to terminate the parental rights of their attackers. At present, more than half of the U.S. does not have laws that protect the custodial rights of victims of forced sex that resulted in children. via Think Progress On Thursday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers led by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) held a press conference to explain their recently-introduced legislation designed to help rape survivors maintain full custody rights over their children. The lawmakers were joined by Shauna Prewitt, a rape survivor and victims’ rights advocate who was forced to endure the type of custody battle with her rapist that the bill seeks to prevent. The Rape Survivor Child Custody Act would provide funding incentives to states that have laws allowing mothers of children conceived through rape to “seek court-ordered termination of the parental rights of her rapist.” These states would receive federal grant funding for programs authorized under the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Currently, 31 states have no custodial rights protections for mothers of children conceived in rape. Of the 19 states that do have some protections, only six reach the standard advocated by the proposed bill. At the press conference, Prewitt explained that victims in this situation can often face a dynamic where their rapist threatens to pursue custodial rights over the child unless they drop their criminal charges. The bill also encourages states to pass laws allowing survivors to petition for the termination of their rapists’ custodial rights as long as they can show that they had been raped under a “clear and convincing evidence” standard. Only six states currently have such laws, whereas thirteen others require criminal convictions for the rapist. That requires a stronger standard of evidence and can place survivors in long legal battles that may prove traumatizing. Obviously, most people can agree that attackers who force sex on women would likely not be fit for fatherhood, but what about cases where a husband or significant other is accused or convicted of raping his partner and she gets pregnant? Like dad, like slightly less angry daughter. In a Twitter rant that would make her famous father proud, Ireland Baldwin went off on annoying members of the press yesterday, saying she hopes “all paparazzi get s–t on by a herd of African elephants.” Hey, at least that slam won’t have anyone calling for her to be fired as a credit card spokesperson . It’s unclear what prompted Ireland’s diatribe, but she continued by addressing these supposed journalists directly: “Get a real job you lame doo doo headed dummies. I’ve met maybe a few paparazzi that have been friendly. The majority of you are d–k bags.” Alec Baldwin, of course, has gotten into numerous confrontations with cameramen over the years. He remains in hot water flipping out on George Stark a few weeks ago and labeling the Daily Mail writer a queen, among other derogatory remarks. Alec has since apologized, but the incident remains in the public conscious. Anderson Cooper, for one, wonder why more folks aren’t more upset over it .

While a pamphlet of sex alternatives from an Australian Christian school was amusing, this story of a coach taking an interest in her players’ lives well beyond that of a normal coach is far from it. Beckie Francis was fired from her position of women’s basketball coach at University of Oakland on June 12th. Didn’t hear about it? Well at the time it wasn’t a big story. The school joined Division I in 1997 but hasn’t been what one might call an athletic powerhouse, so the news didn’t make “the news.” Until last night. Everyone who has played sports has a story about a coach who was a jerk. Worked them too hard, expected too much, wasn’t happy with anything. Most of the time it turns out the coach was just trying to get the best out of the players and being ‘hard’ was the way they decided to go about it. Their actions rarely inflict lasting bad feelings, and in the end usually end up being to the players’ benefit. The women who played for Beckie Francis are telling their own “horrible coach” story and it’s not one that has that element of wistful remembrance of a time and person that meant so much to them, a happy moment in their lives. No, those players are telling the tale of a coach who would often question their religious practices, inviting them to her church. A coach whose constant monitoring of their weight led quite of few to the dark world of eating disorders. A coach who even inquired about their sex lives, insisting that they tell all who asked that they were virgins; Christian virgins. Beckie Francis has made news headlines before. Last fall she became a spokesperson of sort against sexual abuse, admitting to her own experiences of being sexually abused by her father. Now she is making headlines for a different kind of abuse, mental and emotional. When talking to the Detroit Free Press , former University of Oakland player, Stacey Farrell said that “mental abuse is definitely the two words that describe my three years there.” According to other former players, many of who have requested to remain nameless in the press, Francis would join in practice with the players, only to touch their stomachs asking to “feel your sixpack”. Francis even went so far to ask one of her assistant coaches to take photographs of her players in their sports bras and spandex, “flexing their muscles” at different times so she had a record of their weight and appearance. So why didn’t these players go tell someone all this was happening? Besides the usual sports mentality of “coach knows best”, Beckie Francis is married to the University president, Gary Russi. The same day that Francis was fired, it was announced that Russi would retire, effective August 1st. Many players that left the Oakland program have gone on to find success at other schools, but there are plenty more who have lost a love of the game and are left with a distrust of those who should be looked to for guidance.

The Interior Minister of France has confirmed that a train derailment in Paris today has left at least seven people dead and many more injured. Details are still coming in, but Manuel Valls told the press that the casualty toll is “in constant evolution,” as investigators will be sifting through the damage for many hours to come. The train was reportedly carrying 385 passengers when it ran off the rails around 5:15 p.m. local time, crashing into the Bretigny-sur-Orge station about 12 miles south of Paris. It was en route to Limoges. Four cars piled up after the accident took place, while it remains unconfirmed whether anyone is trapped inside the rubble. Story developing…

The 52-year-old pointed his wheels from Taylor, Mich. toward 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on June 14, a 520-mile trek. He says he’s hoping to make his pitch in person to President Barack Obama at the White House on July 4. His 17-year-old son, Curtis Kile, Jr., is accompanying him for the 20-day trek in a Ford Econoline van. Kile Sr. is following the path led by his own father, Charles Curtis Kile, Jr., whom Kile said founded the United Marijuana Smokers of Michigan and once walked from Michigan to the White House in support of “mean-green” legalization. While Kile said his health and pace have been affected by the hot temperatures, he has vowed to press on. “I intend to get a national movement going so it (marijuana) can just be legalized,” he told The Compassion Chronicles. “We have to make it readily available to those who cannot afford it.“ Michigan voters approved medical “mean-green” use for some chronic medical conditions in 2008. But acceptance has been stymied on multiple fronts. Kile told the Detroit Free Press that lobbyists and rival industries, not common sense, have stymied access to marijuana for people who could benefit from it. The murder case against former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has shocked the country, but those who know him well say to reserve judgment. He was a fun-loving teenager at Bristol Central High School, where he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, D.J., a tight end at the University of Connecticut. Some recall him struggling with the death of his father, Dennis, in 2006, but staying determined to become a pro athlete, spending hours working out before and after school. As Bristol police assist Massachusetts investigators, arresting one local man as a fugitive from justice, the community is left to ponder the fall of the hometown hero. A former high school teammate, Andrew Ragali, 24, said the troubled street hood he has seen portrayed on TV is not the Aaron Hernandez he knew. “You could maybe say he was immature, but he wasn’t a gang-banger,” Ragali said. “Not at all. I think when he went to college things might have changed, hanging around with the wrong people, but in high school, he wasn’t like that at all .” Ragali recalled seeing Hernandez again, years after high school, at a Hartford bar. He described him as quieter, and with many more tattoos. But said he was still very nice, asked about his family and took pictures with his girlfriend. It was after his father’s death that Hernandez began smoking marijuana and hanging out with a rough crowd, Hernandez’s mother, Terri, told USA Today. “The shock of losing his dad, there was so much anger,” she said. Hernandez’s mother works in the office at the local South Side elementary school, and other family members still live in Bristol, a city now in shock. “All I can say is that he will be cleared of all these charges in the end,” she told the Bristol Press outside her home Wednesday. “Just let it play out until the end.” The 23-year-old Hernandez was arrested Wednesday at his mansion in North Attleborough, Mass., and accused of orchestrating the execution of his friend, Odin Lloyd. Alll allegedly because Lloyd had talked to the wrong people at a nightclub. He was denied bail at a hearing Thursday in a Massachusetts courtroom, where his lawyer argued his client is not a risk to flee and the case against him is circumstantial. Hernandez, who is being investigated for two more murders – this time stemming from a drive-by shooting in Boston – remains behind bars, however. On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut. A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, the prosecutor said. Authorities said surveillance footage showed the friends arriving. They did not say who they believe fired the shots. Bristol police have been assisting investigators in Massachusetts and that Carlos Ortiz, 27, of Bristol, had been charged as a fugitive from justice. He is being held on $1.5 million bail in Hartford.

In the aftermath of the n-word scandal that got Paula Deen fired by Food Network , the embattled chef wants to clear the air once and for all. She offered a second video apology for using racial slurs in the past, and issued a statement thanking the channel for 11 “great years” on TV. Paula Deen Apologizes Again Said Paula Deen in her statement released to CNN: “I have had the pleasure of being allowed into so many homes across the country and meeting people who have shared the most touching and personal stories.” “This would not have been possible without the Food Network.” “Thank you again. Love and best dishes to all of ya’ll.” The mea culpa was too little too late for the network, which announced that Deen would not be returning following a bizarre video statement Friday afternoon. This morning, Deen’s hour of programming was already yanked from the channel. Deen came under fire after admitting last month under oath in a lawsuit deposition to using racial slurs , including the n-word, in the past. After bailing last minute from a scheduled appearance on Today to address the scandal, Deen released a video “apology” on YouTube. That video (below) was so poorly received that only made the situation first. She then posted a second (above), but the damage was done. Paula Deen Statement on Racial Slurs “Your color of skin, your religion, your sexual preference does not matter to me,” the 66-year-old Deen said in the follow-up apology video. ” I want people to understand that my family and I are not the kind of people that the press say that we are. I’ve spent the best of 24 years to help myself and others.” “I am here to say that I am so sorry. I was wrong, yes. I’ve worked hard and I’ve made some mistakes. But that is no excuse.” Sources say the fallout from the discrimination lawsuit filed against her, along with her management’s clumsy damage control, left Food Network no choice. The first apology video – in which she appears to be reading from a script and stumbling over vague, non-compelling words – was the final straw.
