New Showtime series beat out fan favorites ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ By Terri Schwartz Claire Danes at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images There was a new collection of faces in the nominee pool for best dramatic TV series at the 69th annual Golden Globes . With the exception of “Boardwalk Empire,” which won the Globe in this category last year, all of the contenders were newcomers. There were the dragons and other medieval intrigue of “Game of Thrones” and the ghosts of “American Horror Story,” but Showtime’s thriller “Homeland” ended up being the show that took home the award. Creators Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon took to the stage to thank virtually everyone involved in the making of “Homeland.” They both credited everyone from the show’s stars, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, to the writing and directing crew for making this one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the season. “I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be standing here on behalf of all the talented people that helped to make this show,” Gansa said during his acceptance speech. Gordon added, “I want to thank everyone who watches and enjoys this show because it makes this very special for us to do.” The new Showtime series follows a CIA agent (Danes) who comes to believe that a Marine (Lewis) who had been held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war has actually been turned by the enemy and now threatens the United States. Everyone else, however, considers the Marine to be a war hero. The CIA agent must turn to a fellow operative to investigate the Marine and prevent another attack on American soil. The series is based on the Israeli TV show “Hatufim.” “Homeland” beat out fan favorites “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as the critically acclaimed “Boss” and “American Horror Story.” This is its first Golden Globe win of the night. Stars Lewis and Danes are also nominated for Best Actor and Actress, respectively. ‘I’ve sat through longer James Caeron speeches,’ comedian quips of Kardashian’s brief marriage. By Kevin P. Sullivan Ricky Gervais opens the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: HFPA/ NBC Ricky Gervais did exactly what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired him to do with his opening monologue at Sunday night’s (January 15) Golden Globes. He left the audience having to choose between laughing and cringing. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars left the opener unscathed, a bit of a change from last year’s performance. Gervais still lived up to his reputation, however, and didn’t shy away from his signature brutal comedy style. Gervais opened his monologue with an appropriate question, considering how last year’s awards went. “Where was I?” he asked. “Nervous? Don’t be.” Despite all the talk of Gervais’ sharp wit before the show, he aimed the majority of his opening jokes at both the Globes themselves and NBC, the network airing the awards. Right off the bat, he joked, “Tonight, you get Britain’s biggest comedian, hosting the world’s second-biggest award show on America’s third-biggest network. Aspiring actor Martin Henderson was partially paralyzed after drunk stranger picked him up and threw him in U.K. By Terri Schwartz Peter Dinklage at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Peter Dinklage might have started off his Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night (January 15) with a charming anecdote about his mother telling him Guy Pearce was going to beat him for the best supporting TV actor award, but he ended it on a serious note. The “Game of Thrones” star gave a shout-out to fellow dwarf Martin Henderson but, rather then elaborating, he just said “Google him.” Within minutes, Henderson’s name was a trending topic on Twitter. The aspiring actor was partially paralyzed on his birthday after a drunk stranger picked him up and threw him while he was having a cigarette outside a pub in the U.K. Henderson blames the English rugby team players who recently attended a dwarf-tossing contest during the rugby World Cup in New Zealand for inspiring the attack. The Daily Mail reports that he now faces life in a wheelchair after the incident. Henderson was recovering from a 2010 back injury but has said that this injury has set him back in his recuperation. He went on to tell The Daily Mail that he believes this will affect his acting career. “Every time I stand up I don’t know if I’m going to fall over. I will have to use a wheelchair and I won’t get any acting jobs,” said Henderson, who has appeared in U.K. TV series “10th Kingdom” and “Bigger Breakfast.” British authorities are currently looking for the man who assaulted Henderson. The incident occurred on October 7, but Henderson’s condition has reportedly worsened as the months have passed. He said that his legs became numb following the attack and that he now keeps falling over, even resulting in a recent fractured arm. “I guess I was an easy target and the only reason I was picked on was because I am small,” Henderson said in the interview. “People’s attitudes to me when I go out can be pretty cruel. Most are OK but you get the odd idiot who will make fun and start laughing at me. You just have to ignore it, but this is the first time I have been picked up and thrown about.” Both Dinklage and Henderson suffer from achondroplasia, which causes dwarfirsm. Dinklage was likely trying to raise awareness for a cause that’s close to his heart with the shout-out. ‘I sing part of ‘Black [or] White.’ I’m the ‘white’ in ‘Black [or] White,’ ‘ actor reveals on the Golden Globes red carpet. As star Chris Colfer told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet, there’s plenty to look forward to when New Directions warble again January 17. “Well, the Michael Jackson episode …,” Colfer answered when asked about his most-anticipated upcoming episodes. “We have a Spanish episode coming up with Ricky Martin. We have a Valentine’s Day episode coming up, so that’s going to be fun.” Martin is slated to play “the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio,” according to TVLine . The actor/singer recently tweeted a joyful picture from his first day on set. As to how the King of Pop’s prolific songbook will manifest itself in the January 31 tribute episode, Colfer explained, “Well, I sing part of ‘Black [or] White.’ I’m the ‘White’ in ‘Black [or] White,’ and I sing ‘Ben,’ that famous song he wrote for the rat.” The rodent in question is the pet of a young boy named Danny in the 1972 film “Ben.” Jackson sang a version of the theme song that appeared in the movie’s closing credits and was later included on his 1972 album also named Ben . The track “Black or White” was the first single off of Jackson’s 1991 album Dangerous . ‘Descendants’ star calls out Pitt and Michael Fassbender in acceptance speech. By Kevin P. Sullivan George Clooney Photo: Robyn Peck/ Getty Images In a race that was considered to be a battle of the A-listers, George Clooney took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for “The Descendants.” After an evening of joking about his celebrity best bud, George Clooney opened his acceptance speech by letting Brad Pitt know exactly what he thought of him. “I wanted to say it’s nice to see Brad, and it’s nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he’s doing in two films this year,” Clooney said. “But what wonderful work he does in the rest of the world to the rest of the people.” Pitt, who was nominated for “Moneyball,” and Clooney emerged as the front-runners in the category soon after the nominees were announced last month, and their well-documented friendship came to dominate the conversation around the race. Earlier in the evening, Clooney borrowed the cane Pitt used throughout the evening, seemingly to poke fun at his friend. Clooney also acknowledged one of the actors he got to meet for the awards show, fellow nominee Michael Fassbender, and he took the opportunity to crack a joke about Fassbender’s revealing role in “Shame.” “I’d like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal-nudity responsibility that I had,” Clooney said. “Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man. Do it.” Toward the end of his acceptance speech, Clooney got a little more serious and thanked his co-stars and writer/director Alexander Payne. “Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend,” he said. Host Ricky Gervais returns, as ‘Modern Family,’ Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep also take home statues on Sunday night. By Ryan J. The returning host kept his most pointed barbs confined to the monologue, while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the love a bit more evenly than some predicted , with Globes for stars like Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams . Expected winners also took home statues, with Clooney nabbing Best Actor and “The Artist” winning Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical; the actor and film, like Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer and Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer have been cleaning up this month. “Cheers. So, where was I?” Gervais began, in an appropriately devilish red suit. The awards show itself was the comedian’s first major target (“the Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton”), followed by the Oscars (“when the man who said ‘yes’ to ‘Norbit,’ says ‘no’ to you, you know you’re in trouble”), the HFPA, Jodie Foster (Elton John looked unimpressed), Kim Kardashian (“I’ve sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches than [her marriage]”), Justin Bieber (“the only way that he could have impregnated a girl is if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart’s old turkey basters”) and more. Gervais introduced the first presenter of the night, Johnny Depp, with a plug for his own forthcoming HBO series, “Life’s Too Short,” which in one episode’s fit of “meta” casting features Depp as himself grilling Gervais about last year’s Golden Globes. Depp sipped from Gervais’ glass of beer before the comedian asked him if he’d seen “The Tourist” yet. “No,” Depp responded, as he stifled a laugh. (Depp went on to introduce a short clip about Martin Scorsese’s 3-D picture “Hugo,” which was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.) Gerard Butler and Mila Kunis presented the award for Best Supporting Actor to Plummer for his role as a gay man who comes out late in life in “Beginners.” “What a wonderful welcome back to the home of King Kong, Rin-Tin Tin and all our youthful fantasies,” the 82-year-old screen legend said. “I must praise my distinguished competitors for whom I have the greatest admiration and to whom I apologize most profusely. And I want to salute my partner, Ewan, that wily Scot; Ewan ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ McGregor.” His last bit of thanks was reserved for his wife of 43 years, Elaine. “[Her] bravery and beauty haunts me still.” “Two and a Half Men” star Ashton Kutcher and supermodel Elle Macpherson were up next to present Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical. The Globe went to Laura Dern for “Enlightened,” marking her third win overall at the event. Teleprompter problems plagued Rob Lowe and Julianne Moore as they introduced this year’s Miss Golden Globe (Rainey Qualley, daughter of actress Andy MacDowell). The pair went on to present the award for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie to “Downton Abbey.” Fans of the hit PBS series include Patton Oswalt, who once tweeted that the show is “Star Trek for tea drinkers!” “We’re already five minutes over,” Gervais chided when he returned to the stage, digging into overly long acceptance speeches. “You don’t need to thank everyone you’ve ever met … just do the main two, your agent and God.” The self-described atheist added that both had an “equal amount” of input into his career. From there, he brought up the scene in “Bridesmaids” where Melissa McCarthy’s character moves her bowels in a sink. “Amazingly, that’s still less demeaning than what most of you have done to make it in show business,” he told the audience. McCarthy and Paula Patton gave the Best Actor in a Comedy Series Globe to Kelsey Grammer for “Boss” (prompting viewers like @mindykaling to reminisce about the actor’s semi-legendary fall from a stage) and Best TV Series – Drama to “Homeland.” Jimmy Fallon broke out his Mick Jagger moves before presenting the award for Best Song and Best Score with Maroon Five’s Adam Levine to “The Artist” composer Ludovic Bource. Madonna and Elton John had earlier engaged in some red-carpet cattiness about the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category, in which they were both nominated. Ultimately, it was Madge who triumphed : Her win for the song she wrote for directorial effort “W.E.” followed a previous Golden Globe for her starring performance in 1996’s “Evita.” Seth Rogen and a typically stunning Kate Beckinsale soon followed. “Hello, I’m Seth Rogen, and I am currently trying to conceal a massive erection,” he said, which kept Beckinsale laughing as they introduced the nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy. Michelle Williams won for “My Week with Marilyn,” a film Rogen dryly called a “hysterical comedy” (the movie is arguably more of a drama, despite its categorization). “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person that I most want to thank is my daughter,” Williams said, speaking about Matilda Rose, her child with late actor Heath Ledger. She also thanked the HFPA “for putting in my hands this same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over 50 years ago. Thank you, I’m honored.” Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Parabo presented Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie to Peter Dinklage for “Game of Thrones.” “I was talking to my mother in Jersey before I came out and she said, ‘Have fun but, ‘Have you seen Mildred Pierce? Guy Pearce is so good, he’s going to win!’. … I just love our moms, ’cause they keep us humble,” Dinklage said. He then drew attention to the story of Martin Henderson, a dwarf who suffered a serious injury reportedly inspired by a cruel “dwarf-tossing” competition. Ricky’s punch line when he introduced Madonna was little more than a well-placed clearing of his throat, which followed this: “Our next presenter is the Queen of Pop — not you, Elton, sit down. She’s all woman. I’ll give you some clues: She’s always vogue. She’s a material girl. And she’s just like a virgin … ahem.” The Queen of Pop was ready with a quick retort: “If I’m still just like a virgin, then why don’t you come over here and do something about it?” she challenged. “I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years — on TV.” “Seriously nuts… Seriously,” Spencer said after Bradley Cooper introduced Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. “The Help” star has been stacking up awards this month for her part in the breakout hit. “With regard to domestics in this country, now and then I think Dr. King said it best: ‘All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.’ ” She then sped through her thank-you’s in a comedic nod to the show’s habit of playing off winners mid-speech. “Table 10, thank you again!” she concluded. Reese Witherspoon introduced “The Descendants,” which she noted was directed by “my friend, Alexander Payne,” with whom she made the classic dark comedy, “Election.” Later in the show, Robert Downey Jr. introduced the film “The Artist.” Morgan Freeman is only the second African American actor to receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award; he accepted it 30 years after Sidney Poitier was similarly honored in 1982. The 84-year-old Poitier received a standing ovation when he came out to introduce Freeman. “In my humble opinion, sir, you are indeed a prince in the profession you have chosen. We thank you, Mr. Freeman, for raising the level of excellence yet another notch. Welcome aboard, Morgan Freeman,” he said. The 74-year-old Freeman was honored for a career that includes iconic roles in movies like “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Glory,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Million Dollar Baby.” Angelina Jolie gave Martin Scorsese Best Director – Motion Picture for “Hugo.” “Sit down, sit down, everybody!” he commanded. He thanked the HFPA for all of the work they do to help ensure the preservation and restoration of cinema, which tied directly into “Hugo.” Gervais joked about Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas’ accents when he introduced them, prompting a long, non-English response from Banderas. “Ricky, I don’t understand [Banderas] either,” Hayek teased. The pair gave the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical to “Modern Family,” with Columbian castmember Sofia Vergara accepting with a short speech in Spanish that one of the show’s producers comically mistranslated. Michelle Pfeiffer introduced Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse.” Presenters Jessica Biel and Mark Wahlberg were up next. Wahlberg complimented Biel’s pronunciation of Jean Dujardin (Best Actor winner for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical), before Queen Latifah introduced “The Help.” Then Gervais was back onstage. “Nearly there, nearly there,” he said at the two-and-a-half-hour mark. “Our next presenter is British, like me. But unlike me, he’s won an Oscar, for his brilliant portrayal in ‘The King’s Speech.’ He’s also swooned over by women,” Gervais went on, also noting Colin Firth’s high profile with critics. “What you don’t know about him is he’s very racist. I’ve also seen him punch a little blind kitten. Please welcome the evil Colin Firth!” Firth pretended to kick Gervais when he came out, but the actor was smiling. “As I was on my way in, I noticed some very angry religious people outside threatening us all with brimstone … for our sins. … What they don’t realize is we have Ricky.” “When Ricky Gervais’ deal fell through and they came to me to play Margret Thatcher,” Meryl Streep began as she accepted Best Actress, Motion Picture for “The Iron Lady.” Clooney helped pass her glasses to the stage so she could better read her speech, but she stayed off her notes and offered heartfelt appreciation for all of the women nominated in the category alongside her. “I just want to thank my agent and God — Harvey Weinstein, the punisher,” she added to much laughter and applause. Jane Fonda presented Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical to “The Artist,” as even the dog from the film took the stage. Natalie Portman, Best Actress for “Black Swan” at last year’s Globe’s, was the next presenter. Gervais pointed out that she’s nominated for nothing this year, seeing how she took time off to have her baby. “She’s learned that valuable lesson that all of you knew: never put family first!” Portman gave the Golden Globe for Best Actor, Motion Picture – Drama to Clooney for “The Descendants.” The star first gave a shout-out to Brad Pitt, followed by a “thank you” to Michael Fassbender “for taking over the frontal nudity responsibility that I had,” before making an off-color joke that involved golf. ‘My Week With Marilyn’ actress takes home same award as Monroe did in 1960. On Sunday night (January 15), the pixie-haired actress took the stage to accept her prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her chameleon-like turn as silver-screen icon Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn.” “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl [Matilda Ledger], whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and in my life. I want to say thank you for sending me off to this job every day with a hug and kiss,” she gushed in her Jason Wu gown. “I couldn’t have done it otherwise. You kept me so excited to come home at night and for suffering through six months of bedtime stories where the princesses were read out loud in a Marilyn Monroe sounding voice. “I could go on and on,” she continued, thanking everyone from producer Harvey Weinstein to her longtime pal and former “Dawson’s” co-star Busy Phillips, adding, “I wish I could go on and on; there’s so many people to thank. Thank you to Hollywood Foreign Press Association for putting in my hands the same award that Marilyn Monroe herself won over fifty years ago. I’m honored.” In 1960, Monroe took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in Comedy or Musical for her iconic role in “Some Like It Hot.” Williams has been nominated twice before, in 2005 for her work in “Brokeback Mountain” and again in 2010 for her role in “Blue Valentine.” This is her first win. At the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15), the pop star-turned-film director nabbed the Best Original Song prize for “Masterpiece,” which was featured in “W.E.,” which she wrote and directed . Taking the stage in her glittering Reem Acra-designed dress, Madge thanked the many collaborators who helped her write the song featured in her first feature film, which opens in wide release next month. “This is a surprise,” she told the room, clutching her prize. “Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this acknowledgement. I need to thank my co-writers, Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, my co-producer William Orbit, who’s not here, whom I adore.” As her speech went on, she opened up a bit about the creation of the award-winning track, ignoring her exit music altogether. “I would also like to thank my manager, Guy Oseary, who I spend most of my time beating up on,” she said. “But seriously, he harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song. And I said, ‘Please, Guy, I’m trying to focus on being a director and I want people to pay attention to the film and I don’t have time.’ So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, ‘Masterpiece,’ so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating.” As her speech wrapped up, she thanked her leading lady in the film, Andrea Riseborough, and producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she called the Punisher. This is hardly Madonna’s first Golden Globe. ‘Gone Till November’ will come out two years after Weezy’s release from Rikers Island. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne has a story to tell. Well, Lil Wayne probably has a bunch of stories to tell, but this fall the multiplatinum rap superstar will release “Gone Till November,” his memoir based on the diaries he kept while he was locked up for eight months on Rikers Island in New York. The book, which will come out in November, two years after Weezy’s release from prison, is being described as an internal monologue, according to the Associated Press . It will be released through Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Weezy was freed from Rikers Island on November 4, 2010, after he served eight months of a year-long sentence for an attempted gun possession charge. Police had arrested the rapper in 2007 following his headlining performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Wayne eventually pleaded guilty to the charge and turned himself in to authorities in March of 2010. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway caught up with Wayne in Miami at a welcome-home party just days after his prison release. When asked how his transition from prison was going, Weezy simply responded with a grin. “I forgot about yesterday,” he said after thanking his fans and family for their support. He hasn’t completely forgotten, however, now that Wayne, who has since toured the world and released his double-platinum Tha Carter IV, plans to reminisce a little.
