ABC’s Bianna Golodryga Knocks Franklin Graham for ‘Adding to the Confusion’ Over Obama’s Religion

[Updated] Good Morning America co-host Bianna Golodryga on Saturday chided the Reverend Franklin Graham, complaining that ” one of the country’s leading evangelicals is adding to the confusion ” over Barack Obama’s religion. Reporter Jake Tapper then played a clip of Graham being interviewed on CNN: “He was born a Muslim. His father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father. He’s renounced Islam and he has accepted Jesus Christ.” Yet, the New York Times struck a very similar tone in a  May 12, 2008 op-ed . Contributor Edward Luttwak wrote, “As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.” Both the Times and Graham went on to point out that Obama has embraced Christianity. During his report, Tapper repeated Democratic claims as to who is responsible for some Americans believing the President to be a Muslim: “Those reports, Democrats say, have combined with Muslim roots on the President’s father’s side, an exotic name and political enemies emphasizing his otherness.” The apparent proof of this was then seen in a clip for Fox and Friends’ Steve Doocy: “The first decade of his life, raised by his Muslim father, as a Muslim, and was educated in a Madrassa!” While Good Morning America and other programs have highlighted Graham’s comments, none have mentioned the August 2, 2008 edition of 60 Minutes. On that show, then-candidate Hillary Clinton coyly exclaimed that Obama isn’t a secret Muslim, “as far as I know”: STEVE KROFT: You don’t believe that Senator Obama is a Muslim? Sen. CLINTON: Of course not. I mean, that’s–you know, there is not basis for that. You know, I take him on the basis of what he says . And, you know, there isn’t any reason to doubt that. KROFT: And you said you’d take Senator Obama at his word that he’s not a Muslim. Sen. CLINTON: Right. Right. KROFT: You don’t believe that he’s a Muslim or implying? Right. Sen. CLINTON: No. No. Why would I? No, there is nothing to base that on, as far as I know. A transcript of the August 21 segment, which aired at 7:09am EDT, follows: BIANNA GOLODRYGA: To politics now and the continuing confusion over the President’s religion. President Obama is vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard. But across the country, many Americans still believe incorrectly that he is a Muslim. Now, one of the country’s leading evangelicals is adding to the confusion . Senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper is with the President on Martha’s Vineyard and joins us with more. Jake, this is an issue that continues to haunt the President. JAKE TAPPER: That’s right, Bianna. Not only is the number of Americans who mistakenly believe the President to be a Muslim growing. Now, almost half the American people say they don’t know what religion the President is. This week, the Reverend Franklin Graham told CNN he knew why there was so much apparent confusion about what religion the President is. FRANKLIN GRAHAM: He was born a Muslim. His father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father. He’s renounced Islam and he has accepted Jesus Christ. TAPPER: The President says he has always been a Christian, but the White House has chosen not to make too big a deal out of the confusion. BILL BURTON (White House Deputy Press Secretary): You know, the President is a committed Christian. I think that the American people know that. TAPPER: But that’s not true. Untrue rumors that he’s a Muslim continue to resonate with the public. With a new Time/CNN poll indicating that almost one in four Americans think, wrongly, that he is a Muslim. And nearly half of the public in a Pew poll says they’re not sure what religion the President is. Mr. Obama has made a great effort to discuss his Christian beliefs , as he did on Easter. BARACK OBAMA: What I can do is tell you what draws me to this holy day. What lesson I take from Christ’s sacrifice and what inspires me about the story of the resurrection. TAPPER: Democrats blame widely-circulated conspiratorial e-mails and false reports in the media. [Clip from Fox and Friends.] STEVE DOOCY: The first decade of his life, raised by his Muslim father, as a Muslim, and was educated in a Madrassa! TAPPER: Those reports, Democrats say, have combined with Muslim roots on the President’s father’s side, an exotic name and political enemies emphasizing his otherness . And, Bob and Bianna, political observers say that the confusion has been compounded with the fact that President Obama has yet to pick a congregation in Washington, D.C. with whom to pray. The White house says that’s because the President doesn’t want to inconvenience other parishioners by bringing added security and, of course, the likes of us in the media. Back to you in New York. WOODRUFF: It’s amazing this is still going on. GOLODRYGA: Yeah. You can’t recall any other president that had this issue of what religion they were follow them for so many years. WOODRUFF: For all these years. Unbelievable.

Hannity, Bozell Tackle Media Bias Surrounding Ground Zero Mosque Issue

The mainstream media are telling us that “it’s the fringe that’s upset” about the Ground Zero mosque, but polling data show “it’s 70 percent of the American people,” NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell noted on Friday’s “Hannity” program. “That means every conservative, every moderate, and some liberals too” think the Ground Zero mosque is in extremely poor taste, leaving only “the far left and people still dropping acid,” who fail to see why it’s controversial, the Media Research Center founder quipped. “If Barack Obama runs on this in 2012, he will make Jimmy Carter look good by comparison…. This is how bad this position is, and everybody understands it except for the press,” Bozell argued later in the “Media Mash” segment. For the segment’s audio, click here to download the MP3. Open Thread: ‘Democrats That Don’t Care and Republicans That Don’t Dare’

On Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Freedomworks Chair Dick Armey addressed a widening gap within the GOP. Armey sees the dividing line between those who do and do not support Rep. Paul Ryan’s ” Roadmap for America’s Future .” Is Armey right to frame the intra-party battle the way he does? (Note: Noel Sheppard delved deeper into Armey’s appearance on MTP in his post yesterday.)

Meet the Press: Dick Armey Slams Alan Greenspan’s View of Bush Tax Cuts

David Gregory on Sunday finally got an answer to his question about extending the Bush tax cuts, but it certainly wasn’t what he was expecting. For those that have been watching “Meet the Press” this month, the host has been grilling his conservative guests about this issue ever since former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told him on August 1 that tax cuts don’t pay for themselves. Having badgered Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) about this earlier in the program with no success, Gregory broached the subject with former House Majority Leader Dick Armey in a subsequent segment. With a hanging curveball coming into his wheelhouse, Armey whacked a long drive that still hasn’t landed (video follows with transcript and commentary): DAVID GREGORY, HOST: I want to, I want to address the tax debate . And what you hear from Republican leaders is an unwillingness to pay the bill as you move forward to extend the Bush tax cuts . FORMER REPRESENTATIVE DICK ARMEY (R): Not at all. MR. GREGORY: Is that wrong? You heard Alan Greenspan say that it’s borrowed money … REP. ARMEY: No. Right. MR. GREGORY: …and that they do not pay for themselves. REP. ARMEY: Where has Alan Greenspan been? John — I, I was a young undergraduate watching all my faculty celebrate the genius of John F. Kennedy as he taught us you cut taxes , revenues increase. Reagan cut taxes , revenue doubled. What — the first, most important, critical thing for the American economy is to cut the size of the federal government. This is a big, fat, sloppy, inefficient, obstructionist, Porky Pig that’s standing in the way of economic progress for the American people. It is counterproductive. It’s an extra weight. It is — and it needs to be cut or this economy can’t carry the weight. This is no thinking… D’oh! Now, that’s the way to hit a hanging curveball! With the crowd still on its feet, Gregory turned to his liberal guest for her view:  MR. GREGORY: This is the argument. GOV. JENNIFER GRANHOLM (D-MICHIGAN): Just quickly — this is the argument, and it’s a 20th century argument, it’s not a 21st century argument. When we’re competing in a global economy , the government has to partner with the private sector to create jobs. If you just slash spending, you slash the investments in the things that are going to move our economy forward, we miss out. Just very quickly, last year, the vice president came to Michigan , said we were going to get all these battery grants; we created — we have 16 companies now in Michigan just in the past year because we partnered with the private sector creating 62,000 jobs. Strategic investment with the private sector is what works in the 20th century. Actually, Granholm was playing rather fast and loose with the facts. As MLive.com reported on July 27 in an article titled “Experts Warn ‘Battery Bubble’ Could Burst Michigan’s Dreams”: Michigan and the federal government have placed a multibillion dollar bet that advanced batteries and electric vehicles will someday power the state and national economies. But experts at a National Academy of Sciences conference on the future of batteries, held here Monday, said the bet could go bust if consumers don’t buy those vehicles. And no one knows if they will. The Obama administration last year allocated $2.3 billion in stimulus funds to help develop the nascent advanced battery industry. More than half of that money — $1.35 billion — was awarded to Michigan companies and organizations. Much of the money is being spent on research and development, and on the manufacturing of advanced batteries. Michigan has supplemented that with lucrative tax credits for companies manufacturing cells and battery packs in the state. And those 62,000 jobs Granholm said were already created? Gov. Jennifer Granholm said the state expects to create 62,000 new battery jobs in Michigan over the next 10 years. Ah. So, with unemployment currently at 13.1 percent in her state, these are jobs Granholm hopes will be created in the next ten years. But that’s not what she told Gregory on Sunday. Sadly, he let her get away with it, although he did ask a good follow-up question:  MR. GREGORY: But should the Democrats be raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans during a recession? Understanding her previous faux pas concerning jobs “created,” listen to her answer:  GOV. GRANHOLM: It’s — the question is, should the tax cuts expire for the wealthiest 2 percent so that we can make the investments that will grow jobs? Yes. That’s the most effective way of creating job growth. The CBO has said that cutting taxes for the wealthiest 2 percent is the most ineffective way of creating job growth. Yep. The most effective way of creating jobs is to tax employers so the government can get the money rather than employees. Of course, what folks like Granholm and the current White House resident do is then claim they “saved” or “created” jobs regardless of any real impact to payrolls or unemployment. Pretty neat, huh?  Fortunately, Armey was having none of this:  REP. ARMEY: I’ll give you, I’ll give you anywhere from — a minimum of $2 trillion to a possible $8 trillion worth of real stimulus of the economy from the private sector if we can just relieve the private sector that’s sitting on its cash from the fear that this administration ‘s going to screw up the future of this economy. Let them understand this administration ‘s going to stand down from any new cockamamy ideas and not raise taxes and take away the return on an investment, and they’ll put that cash to work in America. MR. GREGORY: I’m going to make that the last word.  So am I.

Iran’s First Nuclear Energy Plant Has Begun Fueling | Photos | Videos | Maps

Iran's first nuclear plant begins fueling By the CNN Wire Staff August 21, 2010 5:07 a.m. EDT (CNN) — Iran began fueling its first nuclear energy plant in the southern city of Bushehr on Saturday, the nation's state media reported. The effort will help the country create nuclear-generated electricity, Press TV said. The transfer of nuclear fuel was being watched by the International Atomic Energy Agency and senior officials from Iran and Russia, Press TV said. Some Western nations have questioned whether the nuclear fuel will be used solely for electricity or would Iran eventually try to enrich uranium on its own, providing material for nuclear weapons. It will take about two months for the reactor to begin generating electricity, state media has reported. Russia's nuclear agency says it will take longer. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, recently asserted Iran's right to establish nuclear plants. Sergei Kiriyenko, general director of Rosatom, the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation said Saturday's arrival of nuclear fuel marks “an event of crucial importance” that proves that “Russia always fulfills its international obligations.” Spent nuclear fuel from the plant will be sent back to Russia. The opening of the plant prompted the White House to question Iran continuing to enrich uranium within its borders. “Russia is providing the fuel, and taking the fuel back out,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said earlier this month. “It, quite clearly, I think, underscores that Iran does not need its own enrichment capability if its intentions, as it states, are for a peaceful nuclear program,” he said. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking to Russian reporters in the Black Sea resort of Sochi Wednesday, brushed off Western concerns about the Bushehr facility, calling it “the most important anchor holding Iran to the nonproliferation regime,” according to the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti. The Bushehr facility was originally scheduled to start operations in 2007, but the date for commissioning the plant has been postponed a number of times due to various technical, financial and political factors. added by: EthicalVegan

NBC’s Todd Frets Obama’s Effort to ‘Tackle’ Nation’s Problems Allowed Enemies to Defame Him as Muslim

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams cited a “stunning number” from “a reputable pollster” (Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press) – which discovered “just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim” when “he is not” – to justify a full explanation from Chuck Todd on the mischaracterization of Barack Obama. “Look, let’s be clear,” NBC’s chief White House correspondent declared, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian.” Without pointing out how confusion and ignorance about Obama’s religious affiliation extends beyond just Republicans and conservatives (41 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of liberals “don’t know” Obama’s religion), Todd fretted: “Ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim.” Todd despaired that Obama’s focus on his job had left him vulnerable to abuse: During the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. Completing his delivery of White House talking points, Todd asserted: “Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure.” Over on FNC, however, Major Garrett noted that “while Mr. Obama’s political opponents are more likely to believe he’s a Muslim, uncertainty has seeped in the President’s political base.” In his piece for Special Report with Bret Baier, Garrett featured a soundbite from Alan Cooperman, the Associate Director of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, who also appeared in Todd’s story. In the clip run on FNC, Cooperman observed: Less than half of Democrats say the President is a Christian [46%]. Less than half of African-Americans say the President is a Christian [43%]. Less than half of people who give Obama positive job approval ratings say he’s a Christian. Indeed, Pew’s report, “Growing Number of Americans Say Obama is a Muslim” ( Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life version; Pew Research Center for the People & the Press version) found: A new national survey by the Pew Research Center finds that nearly one-in-five Americans (18%) now say Obama is a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009. Only about one-third of adults (34%) say Obama is a Christian, down sharply from 48% in 2009. Fully 43% say they do not know what Obama’s religion is…. Among Democrats, for instance, 46% say Obama is a Christian, down from 55% in March 2009. The belief that Obama is a Muslim has increased most sharply among Republicans (up 14 points since 2009), especially conservative Republicans (up 16 points). But the number of independents who say Obama is a Muslim has also increased significantly (up eight points). There has been little change in the number of Democrats who say Obama is a Muslim, but fewer Democrats today say he is a Christian (down nine points since 2009)…. But even among Democrats, fewer than half (46%) now identify his religion as Christian, down from 55% last year. On Thursday night, ABC’s World News skipped the poll numbers, but the CBS Evening News squeezed in a short item from Harry Smith in a newscast devoted almost entirely to Katie Couric in Afghanistan: The White House said today President Obama is a Christian and prays every day. A spokesman felt is necessary to make that clear after a poll came out showing a significant number of Americans believe the President is Muslim. 18 percent think so. That’s up from 11 percent last year. From the Thursday, August 19 NBC Nightly News: BRIAN WILLIAMS: A new opinion poll from a reputable pollster in this country just out today is getting a lot of attention tonight because it contains a stunning number. Just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim – he is not – on top of a growing number of people who believe he’s foreign-born – and he is not. We go behind these numbers tonight with our chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd who’s in our Washington newsroom. Chuck, good evening. CHUCK TODD: Good evening, Brian. Look, let’s be clear. President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian. But ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim. In fact, with some of these same political enemies who helped ignite another phony claim that the President wasn’t born in the United States. Well, during the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. In March 2009, according to Pew Research, about half the country – 48 percent – correctly identified the President as a Christian, 11 percent believed he was a Muslim, and about a third – 34 percent – had no idea of his faith. Now these results are even more striking. Only 34 percent correctly told Pew pollsters that Mr. Obama is a Christian, while a whopping 18 percent – or nearly one in five Americans – say he is a Muslim, and 43 percent have no idea of his faith at all. Well, earlier today, I asked Alan Cooperman at Pew Research to explain why, in the face of clear evidence that the President is not a Muslim, that a growing number of Americans believe he is. ALAN COOPERMAN, PEW FORUM ON RELIGION AND PUBLIC LIFE: In the absence of information from the White House and from the President himself about his faith, about his faith life, about him going to church, messages from others – innuendo and rumor included – are able to maybe gain currency. TODD: Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure. Now, today the White House said the President is a, quote,  “committed Christian,” and prays every day. But aides said they were not surprised by the poll findings because, as one put it, quote, “The President doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve,” Brian.

Ground Zero Mosque Imam’s Controversial 60 Minutes Interview

As media members across the fruited plain try to convince skeptical Americans that Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Islamic Imam behind the Ground Zero mosque, is a moderate cleric, most have totally ignored an interview that he gave on CBS’s “60 Minutes” less than three weeks after the 9/11 attacks. To demonstrate just how wrong the press are about this man, Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly played the relevant portions of that segment on Wednesday’s “Factor.” As you watch this clip, it will be quite obvious why you likely have never seen it before (video follows with partial transcript): ED BRADLEY, CBS: (Voiceover) And throughout the Muslim world, there is also strong opposition to America’s foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East because of its support of Israel and economic sanctions against Iraq. Imam ABDUL RAUF: It is a reaction against the policies of the US government, politically, where we espouse principles of democracy and human rights and where we ally ourselves with oppressive regimes in many of these countries. BRADLEY: Are–are–are you in any way suggesting that we in the United States deserved what happened? Imam ABDUL RAUF: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened, but the United States policies were an accessory to the crime that happened. BRADLEY: OK. You say that we’re an accessory? Imam ABDUL RAUF: Yes. BRADLEY: How? Imam ABDUL RAUF: Because we have been an accessory to a lot of–of innocent lives dying in the world. In fact, it–in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the USA.  Does this sound like the moderate cleric so many in the media have been claiming he is?

Are "Blood Diamonds" overhyped? What other more conflict zone commodities should be more visible?

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been the subject of media attention as she reluctantly testified at the war crimes tribunal for Charles Taylor, and offered claims that she had no idea what a blood diamond was. Although they may capture the attention of the media, blood diamonds are not the only conflict commodities—tin ore, used extensively in consumer electronics, is also mined in war-torn regions.Do blood diamonds capture too much of the media attention? What other conflict zone commodities should we be paying closer attention to? added by: sgwhites
