13-Year-Old Fights for Grandfather’s Life on Facebook

About two months ago, 13-year-old Logan Ludwig was told that his grandfather, a well-regarded police officer of 19 years, had stage-four lung cancer. A sad story, yes, but it gets worse. Officer Paul Ludwig worked for the Washington, D.C., Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD). Due to a loophole in the disability pensions policy, the Metro knocked Ludwig's pension from $2,800 a month to $770, a huge difference that forced Officer Ludwig to sell his home, declare bankruptcy and move in with his son. Devastated by the injustice toward his grandfather, the 13-year-old took it upon himself to create a Facebook group for his family, fellow police officers and other cancer survivors. His goal: to share the family's tale and garner support. Continue reading to learn how this teen used Facebook for something more important than Farmville. Much to the family's surprise, the story hit home with others who came across it, and the group grew to over 25,000 fans (gaining an average of 3,000 per day). As the press got involved, people became outraged at Metro's behavior, dubbing it a “BP moment” for the D.C. transit authority. “Supporters, a lot of them police officers and other servicemen and women, began pouring out their well wishes for Dad,” said Mark Ludwig, Logan's uncle and Officer Ludwig's youngest son, in an exclusive interview with Asylum. “Our Facebook friends took matters into their own hands and used any means necessary to contact WMATA and get Dad's story out there in the world.” The WMATA and MTPD fought back by deleting user comments on their Facebook page and, eventually, excusing themselves from the social media scene entirely. Despite the increased pressure on them, WMATA still refuses to address the issue, aside from acknowledging the situation's unfairness. Sadly, Officer Ludwig passed away last Tuesday evening. “Our Dad was always the one fighting for what is right and protecting us and others his whole life. Now for us to have had to fight for him was — and is — difficult, but necessary,” says Mark. “The family has and will continue to share this story until my father's situation is corrected.” You can show your support by visiting Officer Ludwig's Facebook page or the family's blog. You can also contact WMATA and give them a piece of your mind. added by: TimALoftis

Kurtz Does Lengthy Hurricane Katrina Segment Without Once Mentioning Bush

Is it possible for CNN to do a 7 1/2 minute segment about Hurricane Katrina without mentioning George W. Bush’s name? Given the media’s approaching five year obsession with blaming one of America’s largest natural disasters on a Republican president, it seems highly unlikely, doesn’t it? Yet that’s what happened on “Reliable Sources” Sunday when Howard Kurtz invited Harry Shearer on the program to talk about his new documentary “The Big Uneasy.” In it, Shearer claims the media badly missed the boat in their reporting of what caused the flooding in New Orleans (video follows with transcript and commentary): HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: But the other issue is the writing of the history as to why this happened and it could it happen again? Now, here, you zero in on the Army Corps of Engineers. You feel the mainstream media missed the mark, or is that overstating it? HARRY SHEARER: A, I don’t zero in. The people who did the investigations, the scientists and engineers who actually know what they’re talking about, zeroed in on the Army Corps of Engineers, four decades plus of malfeasance and misfeasance that led to this disaster. I think the national news media basically did take a walk away from that as the core of this story, that this was a manmade disaster. And that’s why I was led to make the movie, to sort of try to correct the record now five years on. KURTZ: Why do you think national journalists walked away from the story? I mean, in other words, was it just short attention span? Was it laziness? Or was it a failure to dig? SHEARER: Well, I think it’s all of those things. And again, I go back to this quote from this anchor person, that the emotional stories are what gets eyeballs. And this is deep stuff. I mean, I worried as I started to make this movie, I’m not taking people to engineering school. I can’t be an instructional film. I can’t — KURTZ: You’re not Al Gore standing up with the charts and the graphs. SHEARER: Right. What should jump out at readers and viewers alike is “four decades plus of malfeasance and misfeasance that led to this disaster.” Hmmm. Four decades. Wouldn’t that mean this disaster was caused by at least some  malfeasance that occurred before George W. Bush was in the White House? And wasn’t that a contention of many conservatives at the time: decades of malfeasance and corruption in New Orleans led to a levee system in a state of disrepair? But that didn’t fit the media template back then which was all about blaming Bush and anything that could possibly diminish this despicable accusation was verboten. Not surprisingly, five years later, Kurtz didn’t ask Shearer whether his research for this documentary uncovered anything that refuted the press’s claims that this disaster was all the 43rd President’s fault. By contrast, Bush’s name was mentioned seven times in a prior segment about how the media covered Michelle Obama’s Spanish vacation last week. Go figure.

Maureen Dowd Hysterically Claims MSNBC Is Tearing Down Obama

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd said Sunday MSNBC is tearing down President Obama. More amazing than that, she was actually serious. In her ” No Love From The Lefties ,” Dowd bashed “progressives” for not staying on the President’s bandwagon. This includes MSNBC who she hysterically claimed “is trying to make its reputation by tearing down [Obama]”: One of the most disgusting things about Mitch McConnell and Jon Kyl, and now the former maverick John McCain, is that they are happy to be co-opted by the radicals in their party to form one movement against President Obama. On the Republican side, the crazies often end up helping the Republican leadership. On the Democratic side, the radicals are constantly sniping at Obama, expressing their feelings of betrayal. Fox built up a Republican president; MSNBC is trying to make its reputation by tearing down a Democratic one. Assuming you haven’t passed out from lack of oxygen during an uncontrollable fit of laughter, there’s more: The lefties came to the defense of the centrist Clinton during impeachment. Now that Obama is under attack, however, they are not coming to his defense, even though he has given more to the liberal cause than the scandal-stunted Clinton ultimately achieved. He has shepherded the biggest expansion of social programs since the Great Society and spearheaded the biggest spending program with the stimulus. But for the left (and for some economists), it was not as big as it ought to have been. Most telling was that Dowd earlier in the piece mentioned “Michael Kinsley’s maxim that a gaffe is just truth slipping out” for the Times columnist was certainly letting her readers in on just how far she’s willing to shill for the President she helped get elected. More importantly, she will publicly scold her colleagues if necessary. After all, MSNBC is still a devout Obama and Democrat supporter along with a unabashed conservative basher. That some of its hosts have on occasion in the past year expressed disappointment with the President by no means qualifies the network as tearing him down. Dowd herself has surprisingly addressed her own concerns for the current White House resident. In June, she wrote about him being “thin-skinned and controlling.” She even scolded, “Like many Democrats, he thinks the press is supposed to be on his side.” Is she the only liberal media member allowed to do so in her view, or are his plummeting poll numbers and a dismal midterm election cycle ahead changing Dowd’s mind about she and her ilk ever being honest when it comes to this President?

BP Gulf Oil Spill Static Kill Has Failed – Well Now Harder To Seal

(Video from July 30, but Cavnar is always ahead of the game) Drilling Experts Say BP Well Is Not Dead, Static Kill has Failed, and BP Needs To Answer Questions About Clouds Coming From Sea Floor. (Original post has great links) Oil Industry Expert Bob Cavnar has posted a series of blog posts over the last few days http://dailyhurricane.com/author/eljefebob/ that have escalated in charges that BP and the Federal Government BP and the Federal Government are deliberately providing the public with misinformation to cover up the fact that the static kill has backfired and made the BP Gulf Oil Spill well much harder to kill. In a few of those posts Bob Cavnar says BP needs to explain the huge clouds coming from the sea floor that I have pointed out here, here, here, here, and here. In his post BP: “Well is Static” US: “Oil is Gone” Nothing to See Here. Move Along he writes the following. At 1 am today, we got the “everything is fine” press release from BP proclaiming that the well, after the “textbook” static kill, is static. They studiously avoided the words “dead” or “killed”. Per usual, they also provided no further information. I was watching the feeds of the worsening leak coming from the lower flex joint flange at the moment I got the press release. Odd. If the well is static, then why is the wellhead leaking? Also, the leaking fluid is rising, indicating hydrocarbons, and continues even at this moment. This whole operation has given me the willies. … BP has violated this principle in spades by doing what they are doing. Now that they’ve proclaimed the well is “static”, they’ve also gone radio silent with no press conferences or technical McBriefings scheduled for today. Admiral Allen is doing a victory lap at this moment during the White House briefing, also not giving any data, besides just saying that it’s static with seawater. Again, if that was true, why is the wellhead leaking? To be clear, dead means dead. If it’s leaking oil, that means it’s not dead. … I’m sitting here watching oil leaking from a well that is supposedly dead. I’m listening to Admiral Allen saying the well is dead and to Jane Lubchenco and Carol Browner seriously contending that almost 4 million barrels of oil have disappeared. Is it just me, or are we watching the Matrix in real life? That post was followed up by Questions BP Needs to Answer in which he again alludes to the fact the BP and Government are not being transparent about the the success of the static kill and pointing out once again that oil is still leaking from the well and that there are the huge clouds coming from the sea floor. Since announcing success (sort of) of the static kill, MSM attention has dropped to virtually zero, though the well is obviously far from static, judging from the huge clouds in the water around the wellhead and manifold, as well as numerous ROVs surrounding the wellhead, providing no feeds to the public. The media has payed virtually no attention to these feeds and has asked no questions of Adm Allen or BP. BP has stopped briefing the public daily. The problem is that there are lots of questions that remain unanswered. Here’s what I want to know: * Is the well dead? * What is the pressure on the well? Now? * If the well is open to the surface, what is that pressure? * … * How do you know all the cement went down the casing? * … * Why is the flex joint flange leaking? * Why are the ROV feeds no longer provided in a decipherable resolution? * Why are some ROV feeds not being provided? * … * Why are clouds of debris continuing to obscure the view several days after the well was supposedly “static”? Until these questions are answered by BP, we have no real information to tell us that the well is dead, or even safe. As long as they continue to stonewall critical data, I’ll only continue to believe that the well is not “static” or safe. Not only are the ROV feeds high pixelated to the point the screens can not be read BP has still not shown the BOP where a methane leak was discovered just inches from the well head and BP is playing with the lighting to hide huge clouds shooting out of the sea floor and has even been caught applying filters in real time on the feeds to remove hydrates shooting out of the sea bed from the video feeds. CNN’s Sanchez: Reid’s Racist Gaffe Emblematic of Angle’s Incompetence

Discussing Harry Reid’s racially-charged comment about Hispanic Republicans, Rick Sanchez miraculously managed to turn the embattled senator’s gaffe into an example of his opponent Sharron Angle’s incompetence. On the prime time “Rick’s List” yesterday, the CNN host actually gave serious consideration to the Nevada Democrat’s claim while exploring the extent to which the Angle campaign is “blacking out” Hispanic media outlets. “Also, do you think a Hispanic-American can be a Republican?” teased Sanchez. “Harry Reid doesn’t think so. And I’m going to tell you what Hispanic groups are saying about his opponent as well.” Instead of interviewing a Hispanic Republican who is offended by Reid’s insensitive remarks, Sanchez brought on Miguel Barrientos, a liberal talk show host, to “drill down” on why Angle is allegedly ignoring Hispanic journalists. “These charges against Angle, are they real?” asked a bewildered Sanchez. “Is she really blocking out the Latin media? Or is this just a case of opportunism by her opponent, Harry Reid?” After Barrientos confirmed that Angle apparently does not feel the need to reach out to media personalities who describe themselves as “activists” who “get involved very heavily in the political area,” Sanchez wondered if the Republican Senate nominee is merely an incompetent campaigner: Well, look, maybe she’s just not good at this. Maybe she’s hired people who aren’t very savvy at reaching out to the media. Maybe they’re not very organized and they don’t return phone calls. You know, there’s a stretch between someone not being competent at dealing with the media and somebody blocking out a specific part of the media, simply because they don’t like them, because they’re Hispanic or black or Asian or whatever the accusation is. Reid drew fire when he claimed he doesn’t “know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.” Rather than criticize Reid for insulting the intelligence of every Hispanic Republican in America, Sanchez characterized the Senate majority leader’s statement as something that “some, possibly even what many, Americans think.” A transcript of the relevant segment can be found below: CNN Rick’s List August 11, 2010 Also, do you think a Hispanic-American can be a Republican? Harry Reid doesn’t think so. And I’m going to tell you what Hispanic groups are saying about his opponent as well. This is a hot political story, and I’m going to take you through it when we come back. This is RICK’S LIST. I’m glad that you’re here. RICK SANCHEZ: I am so excited about that. Can’t wait to share it with you. Welcome back. I’m Rick Sanchez. It may be what some, possibly even what many, Americans think. But should it be said by the Senate Majority Leader? What am I talking about? Should Harry Reid suggest that no self-respecting Hispanic-American can be or should be a Republican? Play it, Kel. Sen. HARRY REID (D-NV): I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, OK? Do I need to say more? SANCHEZ: No, you don’t need to say more. Now, as a South Floridian, I can tell you, senator, that there are many Hispanic Republicans. The question is whether Senator Reid is taking advantage of his opponent’s problems with Hispanics in Nevada. A problem that seems to have come to a head lately with the Latino reporters saying that Sharron Angle is blacking out the Latin media, blacking them out. They say they’re not invited to her press events, that they’re not set press releases, and their phone calls aren’t even being returned. Those are the accusations. Those are the charges. Now we asked both camps about this. Here’s what I got from Reid’s camp. Right? He sent me this tweet saying, look, Rick, “Angle’s anti-saving jobs, helping unemployed, social security, Medicare, and says immigration reform overriding our culture.” So he takes a shot at her. Well, here’s what Angle tweets, alright. “Harry Reid pulls out race card again, whacks himself in the head.” So you could see that they’re going at each other here. Now we asked Angle to join us tonight but she declined. I’ll read you her comment nonetheless. “We have brought on more communication staff,” she says, “in recent days, and we will be reaching out to all media outlets aggressively between now and Election Day.” “This attack,” she says, “is an attempt by Harry Reid to distract the voters from his record and his insensitive comments yesterday regarding Hispanic voters.” So here we go, tit-for-tat, right? Joining me now to wade through all this is Miguel Barrientos. He’s a community activist and radio host for KLAV-AM out in Las Vegas. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to roll the R’s while on American television. That was kind of neat. All right. Let’s start with this. These charges against Angle, are they real? Is she really blocking out the Latin media? Or is this just a case of opportunism by her opponent, Harry Reid? MIGUEL BARRIENTOS, KLAV-AM talk show host: First of all, hello, Rick. We have been working in the community through our radio show. We’re activists. We get involved very heavily in the political area. And we have contacted Sharron Angle’s office saying we want to hear what’s going on, we want to know what the tea party feels about, you know, opening the door to the Latinos, especially when you’re talking about immigration issues. And we have not gotten any phone calls returned. We don’t get support from their staff to say, “this is what we feel.” We always hear what they say on the local print media, but doesn’t come forward and talk to our community to our media. SANCHEZ: Well, look, maybe she’s just not good at this. Are you sure when you make this accusation that you’re saying, “look, she’s got a problem with Hispanics?” BARRIENTOS: Well, I’m not – I don’t think she dislikes Hispanics. When you have potentially 100,000 voters that are going to be coming out to vote in the elections and she’s not paying attention to the segment of the community, maybe you’re right. Maybe she doesn’t understand, maybe she’s incompetent, maybe she’s not interested in the Latino vote at this point. SANCHEZ: She says that she’s going to try and hire some people to reach out to you. What’s your reaction to that? BARRIENTOS: Well, I think now that you brought it to her attention, maybe she’s going to get a little smarter on how she’s going to run the campaign and get some Latinos out there to maybe speak on her behalf, which I think is a good idea. SANCHEZ: There’s a possibility that someone in her camp would feel like you’re not going to give her a straight shot anyway. In other words, that much of your coverage is going to be directed towards the Democrat because the voting record there in Nevada tends to be from Hispanics, more of a Democratic vote than a Republican vote. How would you answer that charge? BARRIENTOS: Well, we have issues on the table, Rick. We have issues such as immigration reform. You know, this is something that we have been fighting since 2003 here in Nevada. We’ve been working with the politicians. The Republican Party has basically ignored our call. They don’t support anything that has to do with immigration reform. The DREAM Act is a big issue that our community is faced with, and we need to open up the doors for higher education for those who qualify. I mean, it’s always negative, negative, negative, when it comes down to our issues. So how are we supposed to feel when they’re not really taking care? We’re part of the constituency in her district. SANCHEZ: We’ll leave it at that, then. We understand your point of view and we’ll continue to drill down on this topic. Miguel Barrientos, thanks so much, sir. BARRIENTOS: Thank you, Rick.

GOP Candidate: Bike-Sharing Program May be Unconstitutional (Video)

Last week, we reported that a Republican candidate for the Colorado governorship had declared that Denver’s bike-sharing program was a threat to our personal freedoms . Since then, Tea Party-backed Dan Maes has faced some scrutiny in the press for his ambiguous statements: Along with threatening our freedoms, he claimed that bike-sharing was part of a deeper plot to turn the city into a “UN community”. When asked what he meant in a television interview, Maes had trouble explaining himself — and dug himse… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Did The CIA Assassinate Matt Simmons For Blowing The Whistle On The BP Gulf Oil Spill?

Matt Simmons, a prominent oil industry expert who lately has been very outspoken about the BP Gulf Oil Spill coverup, was found dead in his home after supposedly drowning after apparently suffering from a heart attack. But did Matt Simmons really die of a heart attack or was he assassinated? Matt was very vocal on several nationwide news programs making claims that have led some people to question his sanity along with blowing the whistle on BP and Government on several issues. Matt Simmons was very well connected to other oil industry insiders and top government officials in charge of regulating the oil industry. As a result of those connections Matt has blew the whistle on several lies BP and Government where telling to the public. Matt called the claims that only 5,000 barrels of oil were leaking preposterous and instead conjectured there must be at least a minimum of 120,000 barrels of oil per leaking into the Gulf. Matt also reported that there were leaks 5 to 7 miles away which were later confirmed by a NOAA report issued by the Thomas Jefferson. Matt Simmons also revealed that NOAA ships discovered a huge underwater plume of oil at 1100 meters below the surface which could possibly cover up to 40% of the Gulf of Mexico at a time when NOAA and the federal government were publicly denying the existence of underwater plumes of oil. Matt made national headlines by stating BP would go bankrupt because they didn’t have enough money to clean up the Gulf of Mexico as well as making claims that the well integrity and pressures were so high that nothing short of a nuke could close this well. Tea Party Infiltrator Busted

A videographer at this weekend’s Fancy Farm political celebration in Kentucky hounded a man pretending to be part of the Tea Party Movement, wearing Rand Paul swag and holding up a racist anti-immigrant sign, badgering him to reveal who he was. The cameraman caught back up with him when, later, the man walked with supporters Paul’s Democrat opponent, Jack Conway. added by: CarlosBobthe3rd

Fox News and its ‘Summer Of Fear’

Networks cater to all kinds of demographics. But overlooked amid recent hand-wringing over racial politics and the separate debate over whether Fox News merited a front-row White House briefing room upgrade is the main ingredient in the channel's stew: fear. With Barack Obama's election, Fox has carved out a near-exclusive TV niche, while having plenty of company in radio: catering to those agitated (consciously or otherwise) by having an African-American in the White House. Yet a broader secret of its success — preying upon anxiety in general — hasn't really changed since the Sept. 11 terror attacks. As the original home of the “news alerts” (which usually aren't alerting us to breaking news), Fox News under CEO Roger Ailes has been adept at tapping into deep-seated concerns. And in order to powerfully connect with core viewers, it's not enough to disagree with President Obama's policies; rather, they must be couched as an existential threat to U.S. society. In this context, accusing FNC of race-baiting is an oversimplification. Yes, there has been a good deal of coded language to stoke misgivings about Obama being a “radical” and “socialist” — terms meant to resonate among those old enough to associate their use with extreme elements of the 1960s antiwar movement. But that's merely part of the fear factor that's become crack cocaine to TV news, and FNC in particular. Whether Fox planned this or stumbled onto it — in the way programmers in the movie “Network” realized they had a hit on their hands after Howard Beale began shouting — is, at this point, immaterial to the discussion. Is Glenn Beck a true believer or showman, a “rodeo clown,” as he once called himself? Either way, his voice has become the rallying cry around which Fox News is organized. And that drumbeat sounds like a slogan popularized by “The Fly” remake: Be afraid. Be very afraid. Thoughtful conservative commentators have cited the dangers in such overheated rhetoric. Former Bush speechwriter David Frum has become one of the most articulate, writing after passage of healthcare reform, “Conservative talkers on Fox and talkradiohad whipped the Republican voting base into such a frenzy that deal-making was rendered impossible. How do you negotiate with somebody who wants to murder your grandmother? Or — more exactly — with somebody whom your voters have been persuaded to believe wants to murder their grandmother?” Frum added that talk hosts operate “responsibility-free” — playing a different game than Republican politicians, since perpetuating frustration and outrage boosts their ratings. Beck premiered on FNC the month Obama was inaugurated, and it has been an ideal marriage. As talkradio host and Fox contributor Laura Ingraham recently conceded on “The Colbert Report,” the Obama administration has “been great” for her medium and for Fox News. As threats go, terrorism isn't in the headlines every day. On the other hand, transforming the President into America's potential undoing — a kind of Manchurian candidate (maybe foreign-born?), determined to punish whites for past transgressions — has made fear an ever-present part of the daily menu. For all the invectives hurled at Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in the three-cable-news-network era (which didn't begin, unbelievably, until halfway through Clinton's presidency), the most egregious attempts to delegitimize Obama are both distinct and not particularly subtle. The latest theme — illustrated by Fox's crusade regarding the New Black Panther Party — hinges on fear of racial bias where whites are the aggrieved party. As the Washington Post's Greg Sargent noted, Fox's eagerness to “drive the media narrative … simply has no equivalent on the left.” Still, the most ruthless liberals — those more committed to partisan advantage than accuracy — have inevitably drawn lessons by observing, and will retaliate whenever Republicans regain power. Since its inception, Fox has emulated the “If it bleeds, it leads” mindset of local news, garnishing its presentation with snazzier graphics and more urgent production values. The canny post-Sept. 11 adaptation has been, “If it scares, it airs.” Race is just the latest and perhaps ugliest aspect of that equation. And despite debate over whether FNC deserved preferred positioning in the press room, in today's media climate, it seems appropriate for the house that fear built to command a front-row seat. added by: TimALoftis
