Selena Gomez Takes On ‘Raw’ Role In ‘Spring Breakers’

‘It’s completely different than anything I’ve done before,’ she tells MTV News about the part in the flick. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Despite its sunny title, it seems that Selena Gomez ‘s next film is going to be anything but a joyful romp. With “Kids” director Harmony Korine at the directing wheel, “Spring Breakers” will take a turn for the dark and unwieldy. Which is fine for 19-year-old Gomez, whose film docket is quickly getting filled up with films that could make Disney execs blush. The flick follows a group of college girls (played by Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson) who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. After landing in jail, they quickly become entangled with a drug and arms dealer who bails them out. James Franco stars in the film as the corn row-wearing bad guy. “It’s really fun. It’s completely different than anything I’ve done before,” she added. “People are going to be a little surprised, I think, by the choice. But it’s such a good movie. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s about actual spring break and it’s just, they kind of take it to a whole other level.” She gushed about the chance to work with Korine, who she said took her acting to a new level. “It’s great. The freedom we had, I mean Harmony, the director, was so flexible with us,” she explained. “He just really allowed us to push ourselves, which was nice. He never said we did anything wrong. He just said it was a choice. He gave us these locations and just said, ‘Act like you’re on spring break.’ ” In addition to “Spring Breakers,” Gomez is also attached to a thriller with Ethan Hawke, “The Getaway,” as well as Eli Roth’s next flick, “Aftershock.” Are you excited to see Selena Gomez in “Spring Breakers”? ‘Star Wars’ Celeb Fans Name Their Favorite Characters

Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt and more stars name-drop some well-known characters … and Dengar. By Kevin P. Sullivan Boba Fett Photo: Lucasfilm In anticipation of Friday’s theatrical release of “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” in 3-D, MTV News has been asking folks in the entertainment biz to name their favorite “Star Wars” characters. Many of their choices are quite familiar — Chewbacca, R2-D2, Han Solo, etc. — and some … not so much. “The Walking Dead” writer Robert Kirkman likes the Rancor monster that lives underneath Jabba the Hutt’s throne room; it entertains the sluggish crime lord by violently devouring its unfortunate victims. Kirkman also favors another lesser-known character: “I was always partial to [reptilian bounty hunter] Bossk,” he said, “but I think now I’m going pretty deep, so I don’t want people to ridicule me too much.” Kirkman isn’t alone in his admiration of a bounty hunter; “Young Adult” star Patton Oswalt likes Boba Fett’s bandage-headed buddy, Dengar. Actor/writer/director/”Star Wars” superfan Kevin Smith’s preference is slightly less glamorous. “My favorite, hands down, is Power Droid,” Smith said. “He was a little square box, very easy to imitate at home with a refrigerator box. So you could literally become that character.” The simple service droid doesn’t get much screen time in the series, but Smith has big plans for it nonetheless. “I would like to take that guy and do a whole movie about his adventures,” he said. “Wouldn’t be very interesting or entertaining, but a lot of people said neither was ‘Phantom Menace.’ ” Ambivalence regarding “Episode I” notwithstanding, that film does feature a few beloved characters. Keegan Allen from “Pretty Little Liars” is most impressed by Darth Maul, with his double-bladed lightsaber and fierce facial tattoos. “Darth Maul is the sickest ‘Star Wars’ character, period,” Allen said. And then there’s the Jedi master Darth Maul cruelly defeated. “The Grey” director Joe Carnahan’s nomination of Liam Neeson’s character may have been a polite overture to his star, but Qui-Gon Jinn does deserve a mention when discussing the great players of the franchise. “He trained Obi-Wan [Kenobi], he’s got lovely hair, a lovely beard, and he was a good mentor,” Neeson said. What more could one want from a “Star Wars” hero? Patricia Clarkson Talks Tammy One’s Scary ‘Parks And Rec’ Arrival

Ron Swanson’s cold-hearted ex-wife is #29 on MTV News’ Top 50 TV characters. By Jocelyn Vena Patricia Clarkson as Tammy One on “Parks and Recreation” Photo: NBC Before Patricia Clarkson ‘s arrival on “Parks and Recreation,” fans could only imagine what Ron Swanson’s chilling, manipulative ex-wife was like. The mere thought of Tammy One returning sends Ron running for cover. But over a two-episode arc, Clarkson perfectly embodied the role of Tammy One, giving a cold-hearted face to the show’s most-feared character. Tammy One’s arrival in Pawnee, Indiana, was bone-chilling and left fans crossing their fingers that Swanson would get out alive. That memorable introduction also helped her to place a solid #29 on MTV News’ list of Top 2011 TV Characters . We got on the phone with Clarkson on Tuesday, and she opened up about getting the chance to play the scariest woman in the “Parks and Rec” universe. MTV : What was your reaction when you first read this character? She’s the only person that seems to really get under Ron Swanson’s skin. It takes a lot to get under his skin. Jimmy Fallon, one Pretty Little Liar and more also make our TV Top 50! Patricia Clarkson : Oh, yes it does! Well when I first read it I thought, “Oh my.” You know I’m friends with Nick [Offerman] and Megan [Mullally] and they came to me urging me. And I thought, “Why do you think I’m this [character]? … First of all, let’s deal with that.” You know, I’m quite goofy, but I like doing characters that are a little bit of a stretch for me, and I do have a frightening aspect, and I think we all do as people. I think we can all summon the devils and the demons when we want. I am so thrilled I did this. MTV : We had heard a lot about Ron Swanson’s various Tammys, and you sort of embodied everything “Parks and Rec” fans had wanted to see for so long. Clarkson : The lore that this character carries, the backstory — that was also intimidating, very intimidating to walk into that situation. That also was what made me hesitant, but then I said, “What the hell?” It was beautifully written and funny and perfectly etched. And I do really believe that this is one of the greatest shows ever. I do think it’s an indelible cast of characters. It’s just a superb show. MTV : Are we going to see, maybe, the Tammys teaming up at all? Clarkson : We’re in the dark. Will Megan and I square off? … Will we all come back and have a weenie roast? I don’t know. First of all, the ceiling would have to be quite high, literally and figuratively. MTV : Have you heard if you’ll be back at all? Clarkson : I don’t know. I think they want the element of surprise, whether she does or doesn’t. It’s up to the writers and what they have in store for this season. We’ll see; it would be a blast. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Related Photos Best TV Characters 2011

‘That’s hard, because I love both of them,’ Elle Fanning says leading up to the big show Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Photo: Warner Bros./ Summit Given the fact that the latest installments in the blockbuster “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” film franchises are the first and third most-nominated films leading into Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards — with eight nominations for “Eclipse” and six nominations for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” — we figured it would be fun to ask a few of our favorite celebs the most polarizing of all questions: Team Potter or Team Twilight? “Wow, that’s hard, because I love both of them,” Elle Fanning told us of her divided devotion, made especially difficult because of the fact that Fanning’s older sister Dakota appears in “The Twilight Saga.” “There’s something really sexual about ‘Twilight,’ ” superstar figure skater Johnny Weir pointed out. “And as an older gentleman, I enjoy that.” “Who doesn’t want to be a witch or wizard and go to school at Hogwarts?” “Pretty Little Liars” star Troian Bellisario asked rhetorically. “I’m going to have to remain neutral on that,” “X-Men: First Class” star Michael Fassbender said diplomatically. “You said you cried watching ‘Twilight,’ after 30 seconds,” Fassbender’s co-star James McAvoy pointed out. “Dammit, James!” Fassbender exclaimed sarcastically, pretending to be embarrassed by some big secret he was trying to keep. ” ‘Harry Potter’ is more my generation,” Camilla Belle said. “I remember I was in elementary school when ‘Harry Potter’ came out.” “I’d have to say [Team] Twilight,” “Glee” star Chord Overstreet added. “I’m a ‘Potter’ person, because ‘Potter’ got me reading,” revealed “Friday Night Lights” and “Prom” actress Aimee Teegarden. “[There’s] something about vampires and werewolves that do it for me,” Hilary Duff weighed in, bringing the unofficial poll count to three Team Potter members vs. four for Team Twilight. At this year’s Movie Awards, “Eclipse” (eight nominations) will be facing off against “Inception” (seven noms) and “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1” (six noms). Voting in all the categories, from Best Kiss to Best Fight to Best Scared-as-S**t Performance and beyond, is currently under way over at MovieAwards.MTV.com . Voting is set to close June 4. La La Anthony Regrets TLC Hairdo On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me,’ ‘ she laughs. By Alex Mohr La La Anthony on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News La La Anthony makes a return to her MTV roots — this time, however, she’s the one answering questions, not asking them. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17” “When I was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, La La recalls a hairstyle that now has her asking: “What was I thinking?” The former MTV VJ is often seen cheering on new hubby and New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony sporting her long, enviable locks courtside, but she remembers a time when her hair wasn’t always at the top of its game. The style she’s referring to was inspired by T-Boz of TLC fame. “It was like the mushroom cut with two strands of hair hanging here on the sides,” she dishes on the all-female episode, also featuring high school confessions from “Harry’s Law” actress Brittany Snow and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson . While TLC were urging music fans not to chase waterfalls, it seems that girls all over were chasing their sense of style. La La was not alone in emulating T-Boz’s ‘do; she remembers walking into her hairdresser, and she knew instantly the style that she was asking for. “That was one of the most popular haircuts at the time,” Anthony laughed. “I thought I was the coolest thing walking.” The stylish star revealed high school photos of her and the hairstyle, and she admits that her opinion about the style has drastically changed. “Now, looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me.’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring La La Anthony, Brittany Snow and Ashley Benson — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV.
