Rakim Recalls Epic Rap Battle That Never Was

‘We knew that people was trying to make us clash,’ the Paid in Full MC says of onetime beef with legendary Big Daddy Kane. By Shaheem Reid Big Daddy Kane and Rakim Photo: The Life Files Cornerstone Credentials: Rakim It’s probably the greatest rap battle that didn’t happen. Icon vs. Icon, the God vs. the Prince of Darkness: Rakim going mic to mic with Big Daddy Kane. Back in the late ’80s, fans were buzzing about whether the two New York legends would engage in an epic face-off, a matchup of perhaps the two best MCs in the game at the time. On “Set It Off” from 1988’s Long Live the Kane, Kane famously spit, “rap soloist, you don’t want none of this.” Of course, he rapped those lines during a period that saw Rakim ringing off crazy with “Eric B. Is President” from Paid in Full, which dropped in ’87. Ra had rapped, “And you know that I’m the soloist.” After hearing “Set It Off,” Rakim was prepared to retaliate with some rhymes on 1988’s sophomore LP, Follow the Leader. “Me and Kane, people always expected me and Kane to battle. ‘Yo, Ra, you and Kane need to do this. Boom, boom,’ ” Rakim recalled last Saturday when we caught up with him in San Bernardino, California, for the Rock the Bells kickoff. Ra performed the seminal Paid in Full from start to finish. “For the most part, it was love,” he added. “We knew that people was trying to make us clash. ‘Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em,’ I had wrote some of that for Kane because he did a joint before that I felt he was talking to me. I wrote ‘Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em’ [in response] and Eric B.’s brother, Ant Live, let Kane hear it. “They called me up like, ‘Nah, Ra, don’t let people gas it up and say I was talking about you,’ ” he continued. “So it was a couple of bars in ‘Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em’ that I took out because I spoke to Kane. … But he could’ve been lying. You know how it is, baby! Nah, love is love. A lot of people wanted it to happen — it would have been crazy. But big up to Kane, he always kept me on my toes, and I hope vice versa. And another brother: [Kool] G Rap. Those were my measuring sticks that I measured myself with. Big up for helping me keep my sword sharp.” The Rock the Bells Tour continues this weekend in New York City on Governor’s Island and ends its run on Sunday in Washington, D.C. In addition to Rakim, other hip-hop legends who’ll be on the main stage are KRS-One, Slick Rick, A Tribe Called Quest, the Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill and Snoop Dogg . Hip-hop mainstays Wiz Khalifa, the Clipse and Yelawolf will hold court on the “Paid Dues” stage. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Blackwater vs. Pinkwater: Erik Prince’s Wife Picks a Fight With CODEPINK

@huffingtonpost: Blackwater vs. Pinkwater: The Wife of Erik Prince Picks a Fight With CODEPINK http://huff.to/8YUjhz It felt surreal to be inside the home of Erik Prince, the founder, owner and chairman of Blackwater (or Xe, as it is now called). Prince, a former Navy Seal, provides security for the CIA, the Pentagon and the State Department. His company trains 40,000 people a year in skills that include personal protection. Yet his home in McLean, Virginia, has no security. None. Not even a fence or a guard dog or a No Trespassing sign. And his mother-in-law, who helps care for his young children, invited a total stranger — me — into his home without hesitation. I had gone to Prince's home, together with two CODEPINK colleagues, assuming it would be empty. I'd read in the New York Times that Mr. Prince and his family had moved out of the country, fleeing from a series of civil lawsuits, criminal charges and Congressional investigations stemming from his company's contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the news, “In documents filed last week in a civil lawsuit brought by former Blackwater employees accusing Mr. Prince of defrauding the government, Mr. Prince sought to avoid giving a deposition by stating that he had moved to Abu Dhabi [which is in the United Arab Emirates] in time for his children to enter school there on August 15.” Susan Burke, the lawyer seeking the deposition, announced that she was flying to the Emirates to find him. I had been feeling particularly upset about Blackwater lately. Seeing the combat troops leaving Iraq, I'd been thinking about the banner CODEPINK members held in countless anti-war vigils: “Iraq War: Who Lies? Who Dies? Who Pays? Who Profits?” Politicians lied about weapons of mass destruction, Iraqis and American soldiers died, U.S. taxpayers paid, and companies like Blackwater make a killing. In just a few years, Blackwater received over $1 billion in U.S. government contracts, contracts that accounted for 90 percent of its revenue. Erik Prince, the company's sole owner, was now taking his profits, trying to sell the company and running away to the Emirates, a country that has no extradition treaty with the United States. So we decided to make a symbolic gesture of visiting his home in McLean to bid good riddance to bad rubbish. On Friday, August 20, five days after the Prince children were supposed to be starting their new lives as schoolchildren in the Emirates, we MapQuested the old McLean home and drove there, ready to take a photo with our “Adios Diablo Prince” sign and leave. But when we got there, to our surprise we could see through the window that the house was full of people and furniture. There were no moving boxes, no empty rooms. Could the new owners have settled in so quickly? Curious, I rang the doorbell and before I knew it, I was invited in and found myself inside the living room with a bunch of young children and several adults, who turned out to be grandma, grandpa and wife Joanna Prince. The rest happened very quickly. Joanna asked who I was and why I was there. I asked the same questions: Was this the Prince family and if so, why weren't they in Abu Dhabi? She freaked, told the grandparents to call the police, and she pushed me out the door. We hung around outside waiting for the police. We wanted to assure them that there was no problem — that I had indeed been invited inside and left when asked to leave. In the meantime, I wrote a letter to Erik. Dear Erik Prince, On behalf of U.S. taxpayers, we say “Shame on You.” Through your company Blackwater, or Xe as you now like to call it, you made — or should I say stole? — hundreds of millions of dollars and your employees also killed innocent civilians in Iraq. You should be held responsible. Don't run away to the Emirates to escape prosecution. Stay here in the USA and face the consequences of your actions, like a good Christian. Sincerely, Pinkwater When the police arrived, Joanna Prince lied and said I'd been told to leave the house and refused. I was arrested, charged with trespassing, held for 5 hours and forced to pay $500 in bail. I have to appear in court on September 28. So does Joanna Prince. Will she show up in court or will she — like her husband — run away to Abu Dhabi? Will the court subpoena her to appear? Will her husband, a man who shuns publicity, tell her that she is crazy to pick a public fight with CODEPINK (or Pinkwater, as we now call ourselves) and make her drop the charges? Will I be able to sue her for false arrest? Stay tuned for round two of Xe (formerly Blackwater) vs. Pinkwater (formerly CODEPINK). Jon Stewart: Watching Fox News Funds ‘Terror Mosque’

During a recent Fox and Friends segment surrounding the Islamic cultural center/mosque that is proposed for Lower Manhattan, guest analyst Dan Senor pointed out that Imam Rauf had previously received funds from a Saudi organization that is alleged to also “fund radical madrassas all over the world” and is headed up Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. Jon Stewart used that clip to then reveal that bin Talal just so happens to also be a large partner News Corp. business partner, or in his words, “The terror funder is Rupert Murdoch’s News Corps’ funder!” When future trumped up media controversies (like the Park 51 story) reveal themselves, the nation should first looks to Jon Stewart for reason, context and common sense. For no one can more clearly point out the many inherent absurdities in alleged fake controversy surrounding the “Terror Mosque” as Stewart chose to call it. The crux of Stewart’s clip is best summed up by the following rough transcript of the central thesis: That’s right – the guy they are paying as a sinister money force, owns part of Fox News. Let’s do as Fox News commands and follow the money:This is the proposed ‘terror mosque.’ We know that it’s a ‘terror mosque’ because the money may be coming from a bad guy, who definitely owns part of Fox News. Now we know he is a bad guy because we just heard it on Fox News. And by hearing it on Fox News watching Fox News, I’m increasing their viewership and their advertising rates go up. Now, part of that money goes to the bad guy we learned about on Fox, because he’s their part owner, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, allowing him then to make it rain, so to speak, on the terror mosque. My point is this: if we want to cut of funding to the terror mosque we must, together as a nation, stop watching Fox. It’s the only way. Using their reasoning, its the only way to cut off the revenue stream to these bad dudes. Stewart then points out that the most curious part of this entire report was that Fox and Friends never revealed who the evil money source was to the viewers of the show. He then had on correspondents Wyatt Cenac (representing Team Evil) and John Oliver (representing Team Stupid) to debate whether or not, well, the producers at Fox and Friends were being stupid or evil. Fla. Church Denied Permit to Burn Qurans

(AP) Gainesville city officials have denied a burn permit for a church that plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. Interim Fire Chief Gene Prince said Wednesday that an open burning of books is not allowed under the city's burning ordinance. The Dove World Outreach Center drew international attention after announcing its plan to burn copies of the Islamic holy text on church grounds to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Prince says the church will be fined if it holds the burning. In an e-mail sent out Wednesday, the church said, “City of Gainesville denies burn permit – BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS.” The Gainesville church made headlines last year after distributing T-shirts that said “Islam is of the Devil.” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/19/national/main6787518.shtml added by: onemalefla
