Sway’s ‘2010 Wake Up Show Anthem’ Video Premieres Sunday!

MTV News correspondent and radio partner King Tech release follow-up to Eminem-assisted posse cut on MTV Jams. By MTV News staff Sway in 2010 Wake Up Show Anthem” Photo: MTV News MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway and his “World Famous Wake Up Show” radio partner King Tech will premiere the video for their new “2010 Wake Up Show Anthem” on MTV Jams this Sunday. The track — featuring Cypress Hill’s B-Real, Ras Kass, Tech N9ne, Crooked I, Kam Moye and Bay Area rapper Locksmith — is the follow-up to the duo’s breakout hit, 1999’s “The Anthem,” which featured an array of MCs, including Eminem , Wu-Tang Clan’s the RZA , Xzibit, Pharoahe Monch and Kool G. Rap, among others. The original track became the standout on the longtime radio hosts’ album This or That. “The Anthem” also served as an audio pep rally for Sway and Tech’s historic radio show, which has showcased once-upcoming MCs like Em, Big L and Common. “For the ‘Wake Up Show Anthem,’ it’s just usually people or artists that we respect, who are known spitters that innovated their own styles,” Sway explained of the posse cuts. “Someone like the RZA a.k.a. Bobby Digital, there’s something really distinct about when he came out early in his career as Prince Raheem and then into the Wu-Tang Clan. He’s always had a distinct voice and distinct way that he spit his lyrics. “I think it goes without saying that Eminem is one of the most gifted lyricists to ever touch a mic,” Sway continued. For the updated set, Sway and Tech kept with tradition and selected a lineup of wordsmiths who tangle words together like a tricky knot. “We try to put together MCs that we feel will have a great synergy and represent something that’s important to hip-hop,” Sway said. Master P Talks No Limit Records, 2010 ‘VH1 Hip Hop Honors’

‘There’s no such thing as too much music,’ the Dirty South honoree recalls of how he ran pioneering record label. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Romeo, Master P and Silkk The Shocker Photo: MTV News At its zenith, Master P’s No Limit Records was cranking out albums like a factory and collecting plaques that matched the gold and platinum tanks that dangled from P’s chains. His business plan was simple, succinct and, to some, foolish. These days, however, P is hailed as a pioneer for his decision to flood the market — beginning in the early 1990s — with a steady stream of his own albums, as well as projects by Tru, Mia X and a bevy of New Orleans talent. His business acumen helped paved the way for Cash Money, Young Money, Grand Hustle and a host of Southern labels. For his groundbreaking impact, P will be among those feted at the 2010 “VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South,” , joining Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder J Prince, Luther Campbell and 2 Live Crew and Outkast producers Organized Noize. The show, set to be taped at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom, airs Monday, June 7, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1. “When it comes down to putting out records, people are afraid. They say, ‘I don’t want to put out too many records,’ ” P told MTV News when we caught up with him during rehearsals for “Hip Hop Honors” on Wednesday (June 2). The No Limit founder recalled that his aggressive output was controversial at the time, but he had his reasons for pushing forward. “My thing was, with No Limit, when you’re hot, you’re hot, you give ’em whatever you can give ’em,” P said. “That’s what I teach my family: When you got ’em, give it to ’em, ’cause when you got a fanbase, feed that fanbase. There’s no such thing as too much music. We accomplished something that nobody did, to be able to sell 75 million records independently and to be honored for hip-hop is a blessing and lets you know we been dong the right thing.” Master P will be celebrated with performances by his son Romeo, Silkk the Shocker, Trina, Mystikal and Gucci Mane, with Kid Capri manning the turntables during the medley. Meanwhile, P has been revving up for the next incarnation of No Limit. He’s dubbed himself the “Archie Manning of hip-hop,” with his two rapper sons, Romeo and Valentino , standing in for Eli and Peyton. And P’s younger brother Silkk is still carrying the torch; his next release is due this summer. Silkk told MTV News he’s had the best seat from which to witness his brother’s success, and getting to pay him back with a performance is “amazing.” “With me, first of all, shouts out to him, ’cause I got to see greatness for a long time,” Silkk said. “It’s very good to finally see him get honored for it. And then, I think a lot of people out there also appreciate what he’s done. I perform all the time, but to actually perform and give back to him and show him what he means to us, that’s amazing for me.” Whose “Hip Hop Honors” performance are you most looking forward to? Prince Harry Will Have A Polo Rematch in N.Y.C.

It another round for Prince Harry and Argentine polo star Nacho Figueras. Kristen Stewart Leads Best Female Performance Nominees At MTV Movie Awards

Sandra Bullock, Zoe Saldana, Amanda Seyfried and Emma Watson face off against the ‘New Moon’ star on Sunday, June 6. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: New Moon” Photo: Kimberley French/Summit Entertainment A far cry from the old “Sugar and spice and everything nice” adage, there’s something to be said for strong women, and this year’s Best Female Performance category at the MTV Movie Awards is packed with them. Despite their diverse backgrounds — from otherworldly Pandora and Hogwarts to the small town of Forks, Washington — the one thing all five nominees have in common is their strength. Here’s a look at the five contenders in the Best Female Performance category who will face off Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV: Amanda Seyfried, “Dear John” In this have-tissues-handy tearjerker, Seyfried is Savannah, an idealistic college student on spring break, who meets and quickly falls in love with John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a soldier on leave from the Army Special Forces. Their romance and eventual long-distance courtship through correspondence is the stuff from fairy tales. And Seyfried plays the perfect princess. Emma Watson, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Moviegoers and “Potter” fans alike have watched the college freshman grow up onscreen. In the sixth installment of the hugely popular franchise, Watson is as bewitching as ever. In “Half-Blood Prince,” Hermione must confront the death of a dear friend and unrequited love. Watson’s transition from bossy schoolgirl to brazen young woman is a seamless one. Kristen Stewart, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Kristen Stewart doesn’t have legions of obsessive, die-hard fans for nothing. Her endearingly clumsy-yet-steadfast portrayal of Bella is so spot-on, fans have convinced themselves that Stewart is her character and that she and her onscreen star-crossed love interest, Robert Pattinson (Edward), are a couple in real life. Sandra Bullock, “The Blind Side” If it were any other awards show, an argument could be made that competing against an Academy Award winner isn’t quite fair — especially one who was perfectly cast as the fiery Leigh Anne Tuohy, a character based on the inspirational real-life mom who takes in a teenager, Michael, from foster care and raises him to be a part of her family. Zoe Saldana, “Avatar” When images and trailers started surfacing before the momentous release of “Avatar,” there were grumblings about “those blue people” and the actors who played them. Not so after the movie opened. Moviegoers were blown away and completely transported to a new world of filmmaking. Zoe Saldana’s performance as Neytiri, a woman who stands by her people, planet and man, embodies every letter of the phrase “strong woman” and is absolutely deserving of the Best Female title. Sarah Ferguson: Drunk and Taking Bribes

Sarah Ferguson, a.k.a. Fergie, a.k.a. Britain’s Duchess of York, says she was drinking and “not in my right place” when she was caught in a sting operation. The set-up? Ferg was caught on video offering access to her former husband, Prince Andrew, for $724,000. She told Oprah Winfrey she was “in the gutter.” “I’m aware of the fact that I’ve been drinking, you know. I was not in my right place,” Sarah Ferguson said in an interview set to air on Oprah on Tuesday. Ferguson said she had seen the video while traveling through airports recently but had not sat down to watch closely: “I haven’t faced the devil in the face.” According to transcripts of the show, the Duchess says “I was in the gutter at that moment.” We’re inclined to believe it, given the accusations in this case. Tape of the sting was posted by London’s News of the World , which set up the meeting. Ferguson asks for $40,000 cash and 500,000 pounds ($718,500). In exchange for that wire transfer, she agrees to introduce an undercover reporter to the prince. It’s unclear why the reporter supposedly wanted access. The newspaper’s sting operation has caused a major embarrassment for the 50-year-old Sarah Ferguson, who has a pair of daughters with Prince Andrew. Andrew is the second son of Queen Elizabeth and fourth in line to the throne. The prince is also known as the Duke of York. The couple divorced in 1996. He acts as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment, so surely this can’t be going over well across the pond. More to come .

Alicia Keys And Swizz Beatz Engaged And Expecting A Baby

Rep says the couple will be ‘married in a private ceremony later this year.’ By Katie Byrne Alicia Keys After months of denying rumors about their relationship and recent reports about a baby on the way, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz confirmed late Thursday (May 27) they are engaged and expecting their first child together. The musicians “are expecting a baby and are engaged to be married in a private ceremony later this year,” reps for the couple told the magazine. ‘American Idol’ Finale Preview: What Should The Top Two Sing?

Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze have one more shot to wow America — and we have just the songs. By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX “American Idol” page staged find-the-next-superstar auditions in seven cities for the show’s ninth season, but producers could have saved a lot of time by heading straight to Chicago. It was in the Windy City that they discovered both Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze . Now the competition is down to just the two of these Midwestern natives — and they have only one more shot to win the hearts (and text messages) of America. On Tuesday night’s (May 25) performance finale, each singer will have the chance to sing three songs: two tunes are up to them — either new ones or faves from any point in the season — and one brand-new single penned especially for the occasion. Bowersox and DeWyze better make their choices good ones, because they probably won’t get a lot of help from the “Idol” original single, a song that each year strives for an over-the-top inspirational theme and almost always falls ear-gratingly shot. Remember 2007’s “This Is My Now”? Neither do we. Last year’s Kara DioGuardi-co-written tune, “No Boundaries,” for instance, contained lyrics hampered by mixed metaphor-itis (Mountains! Dreams! Bridges! Hurricanes!) and built toward an unwieldy chorus that not even talents like Kris Allen and Adam Lambert could pleasingly deliver. So it’s up to Bowersox and DeWyze to pick the right songs. Here’s what we’d like to hear them sing — one recycled tune, one fresh one — the songs that give them each the best chance to be crowned season-nine “Idol” champ Wednesday night. Crystal Bowersox MamaSox could return to either “Me and Bobby McGee” or “Long As I Can See the Light” and blow viewers away, but here’s why we favor the latter choice. The Creedence Clearwater Revival tune seems more calibrated for a “moment,” and we know how obsessed the judges are when it comes to such things. Randy Jackson called Bowersox “the truth” after her performance of the song back in March. Her vocals were sultry and soulful, and the presence of the backup singers allowed her to riff freely in the second half. Plus, we love the song’s message: “I won’t be losing my way, long as I can see the light.” When it comes to selecting a new song, we’ll return to our pick from last week, because the reasoning behind it is even more apt now. Bowersox needs to make clear that she can sing contemporary music. Her rendition last week of Melissa Etheridge’s “Come to My Window” was predictable and borderline uninteresting (as lovely as it sounded). Crystal needs to go in an unexpected direction and rework a hit single in a way that works for her style. The perfect “Idol”-winning song? Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”! Seriously. Lee DeWyze Last week’s stellar double bill of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” made one thing clear: This is anyone’s competition to win. And we’d urge DeWyze to bust out Skynyrd’s tune again if he hadn’t just done it. Instead, we suggest another go at “The Boxer.” Never mind that it was featured so prominently during his hometown-visit video package. It was his second-best performance of the season, and he can knock it out of the Nokia Theatre. For his other performance, we turn our attention back to Songs of the Cinema night earlier this month. In a surprising development, Prince’s “Purple Rain” landed on the approved song list, and then, even more surprisingly, no one performed it. And man, would it be killer in DeWyze’s hands! The 24-year-old has had his biggest successes with slow, expressive rock tunes. “Purple Rain” is just funky enough to mesh well with the DeWyze we’ve come to know while also showing us some welcome range. If the singer wants another “moment,” Prince’s hit is the way to go. Which songs do you want to hear from Crystal and Lee during the final performance night? Sound off in the comments!
