Prince William: Knighted in Scotland!

With the lovely, supportive Kate Middleton by his side, Prince William was knighted as a member of the Order of the Thistle in Scotland on Thursday. He received the title from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II – the highest honor she can bestow in Scotland – around his 30th birthday last month. In a nod to her Scottish title, the Countess of Strathearn, Kate Middleton wore a soft yellow coat dress specially made for her by Emilia Wickstead. Kate and William fell in love at St. Andrews University, just outside the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where the grand ceremony took place at St. Giles Cathedral. A pipe band heralded the beginning of the festivities before the royals arrived. Kate had a few words and a smile with a church official and was then escorted in. No reports of the Queen hating on her today, so that’s good. Prince William then joined other members of the Order of the Thistle. After several minutes, he walked to the cathedral alongside his aunt, Princess Anne. Like the other knights, including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, he wore a deep-green velvet cloak and matching hat adorned with a white ostrich feather. This is actually William’s second honorary knighthood . He was invested in the Order of the Garter at Windsor Castle in 2008. Congratulations to the royal! [Photos: WENN.com]

Naomi Watts as Princess Diana: First Look at Biopic Caught in Flight

Having replaced one-time star Jessica Chastain in the Princess Diana biopic Caught in Flight , Naomi Watts was photographed on the set of the now-filming project, and the resemblance is… uncanny. Maybe it’s just the layered period blonde perm or the boxy sensible suit ‘n’ tights, but Watts looks to have slid quite fittingly into the skin of the late Princess of Wales, who embarks on a torrid love affair with Pakistani-born heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (played by LOST ‘s Naveen Andrews) in the ’90s-set drama. The film (directed by Downfall ‘s Oliver Hirshbiegel) depicts Princess Di and Khan’s secret two-year relationship, which ended just months before her tragic death in 1997. According to previous reports , Diana “is shown as a damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.” Fun. Can’t wait! [ Daily Mail ]

‘American Idol’ Hopefuls Audition By The Thousands In Newark

More than 5,000 people auditioned on Saturday to see if they have what it takes to be the next Phillip Phillips. By Cory Midgarden Ryan Seacrest Photo: Exactly one month after crowning Phillip Phillips as Season 11’s “American Idol,” the hit television series is once again on the hunt for the next singing superstar. The auditions’ fourth stop drew more than 5,000 hopefuls to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday, all with dreams (or delusions) of hearing those four life-changing words: “You’re going to Hollywood!” Among the hopefuls “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, who was confident in Seasons 12’s success. “We actually now realize we don’t know what we’re going to find, and that makes for the best season,” Seacrest said. “When we set out to find something specifically it doesn’t work out as well, so when we don’t know it usually works out best.” Although the show set its sights for nothing particular, many of the singers in attendance knew exactly what they had to offer the show. “I’m someone like Beyonc

‘Brave,’ ‘Hunger Games’ And The History Of Lady Archers

As Princess Merida joins the big-screen leagues of Katniss Everdeen, we look at the sport’s storied past, in Hobnobbing. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: A fiery bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine not named Katniss Everdeen? Color us intrigued! This weekend, Pixar will take aim at the box-office bull’s-eye with its first foray into the fairy-tale princess pic. ” Brave ” follows a young Scottish royal named Merida, who bucks her parents’ wishes, insisting on paving her own path — with bow firmly in hand. Of course, the animated flick is only the latest this year to feature an adept bow-woman (or bowman). There was Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in “The Avengers,” William (Sam Claflin) in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and, our obvious favorite, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in ” The Hunger Games .” Unsurprisingly, this slew of big-screen portrayals has helped revive interest in the ancient sport , with more and more amateur archers sizing up their targets. But let’s be clear about one thing: Bow-besotted babes are nothing new. Lady archers have been around practically since the dawn of time. Follow me down their storied path: Like most grand ideas, the concept of a woman and her bow has roots in Greek mythology. “Amazon” may be a compliment for a leggy lady nowadays, but maybe it shouldn’t be, considering the ancient archers were often depicted with their left breast cut off to make wielding their weaponry simpler. The Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was also frequently pictured holding a bow and arrow (sans missing mammary glands). Throughout the Middle Ages, archery served dual purposes: fending off enemies and hunting prey for sustenance. But by the Elizabethan era, it had become a posh pastime, with proper ladies learning the sport — along with dancing and riding — as part of their studies. (P.E. was soooo much cooler back then.) In fact, Queen Elizabeth I herself (daughter of Henry VIII) is said to have been a skilled archer. A few hundred years later, the sport made its Olympics debut in 1900, with women taking up arms at the 1904 games. The event took a hiatus from the Games between 1920 and 1972, reappearing at the Munich Olympics. And while plenty of Hollywood heavyweights have learned the skill for a movie, one took it upon herself to learn for the sport of it. Actress Geena Davis made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Olympic trials in 1999, hoping to compete in the 2000 games in Sydney. The games and a gold medal were not in Davis’ future, but she already has one gilded goody (namely, an Oscar) to console herself. And speaking of actresses and archery, the last few decades have offered up a bumper crop of bow roles, from Gwyneth Paltrow in “Emma” to Saoirse Ronan in “Hannah.” And, of course, Lawrence in “The Hunger Games.” All we have so say is, may the odds be ever in your favor, lady archers! Is Katniss your favorite fictional archer? Do you plan to see “Brave” this weekend? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! First Image from Disney’s Maleficent: Witchy Angelina Jolie and Her Killer Cheekbones

Cower in fear (and admiration) for the villainous Angelina Jolie ! Releasing a first look at their upcoming Maleficent , Disney announced today that production is underway on the Jolie-toplined adaptation centered on Sleeping Beauty ‘s evil witch, which “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” Just look at those cheekbones. Scary! The retconned fairytale (in theaters in 2014) brings the witch Maleficent front and center, with innocent young Elle Fanning playing Princess Aurora. Fanning and Jolie are joined by a solid line-up: Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, and Lesley Manville round out the cast, while Disney Renaissance legend Don Hahn is among the executive producers. Once upon a time, Tim Burton and Darren Aronofsky’s names were bandied about to helm the picture, but visual effects vet Robert Stromberg landed in the director’s chair, marking his directorial debut. Meanwhile, Maleficent ‘s script is written by Linda Woolverton ( Beauty and the Beast , The Lion King ) and they’ve got Rick Baker onboard for make-up, all of which is promising enough for me…for now. Maleficent is set for release (in 3-D) on March 14, 2014.

Kelly Clarkson Covers "Princess of China"

Kelly Clarkson singing Coldplay? Like Usher singing Foster the People , it’s a cover we can’t say we saw coming, but one you’ll find is memorably good. The American Idol winner and Duets star paid a visit to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge – the same venue as Usher’s aforementioned cover – last week. On it, she took on the Coldplay and Rihanna hit “Princess of China” in stripped down, acoustic rendition featuring just guitar, mandolin and vocals. Watch below as she nails both Rihanna ‘s part and Chris Martin’s: Kelly Clarkson – Princess of China (Live)

Martin Solveig At Movie Awards: What Did He Play?

We break down highlights from French DJ’s movie-themed set. By Ryan J. Downey Martin Solveig arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images “The Hunger Games” was one of the big winners Sunday night (June 3) at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , where the juggernaut collected several Golden Popcorns against a musical backdrop culled from some of the most iconic film scores of all time. That nostalgia-inducing soundscape came courtesy of DJ Martin Solveig, who remixed themes from classic movies ranging from “Star Wars” to “Pulp Fiction.” The Black Keys, Fun. and Wiz Khalifa all brought the house down as musical guests at the MTV Movie Awards, held at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, California. The French electronic-music DJ and producer entertained the audience throughout the show, which was broadcast to viewers live as the show went in and out of commercial breaks. Solveig carefully curated a delicious mixture of some of the most memorable melodies from the movies that have shaped generations of popular culture with their stories, performances, tone and dialog. His set was also as much about the present as the past, perfectly summarized by the mix of the Doors and screamo singer-turned-Grammy-winning dubstep standard-bearer Skrillex. Miss a few tunes? We’ve got you covered. Solveig’s selections on Sunday included “Hello” (Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette), Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Skrillex and the Doors “Breakin’ a Sweat,” Kavinsky + Lovefoxx’s “Nightcall” (from the movie “Drive”), “Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix),” “Misirlou”(made famous all over again in “Pulp Fiction”), Martin Solveig & Dragonette feat. Idoling!!!’s “Big in Japan (Ziggy Stardust Remix),” various mixes of “The Night Out” and some of Daft Punk’s work from “Tron: Legacy.” And these were the tracks spinning off from the most legendary themes: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” spaghetti Western trilogy (which concluded with 1966’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”) is the stuff of legend, most recently memorialized in Johnny Depp’s animated “Rango.” For many years, Metallica has opened each and every concert with composer Ennio Morricone’s “Ecstasy of Gold” from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” with the crowd often singing the lyric-less melody in unison as a series of “whoa-oahs.” If the 83-year-old Italian composer was watching the Movie Awards, he heard his composition mixed up for the modern electro age. “Jaws Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Who hasn’t tried to play the “Jaws” theme on a piano at some point? It’s so simple yet so brilliant, like “Chopsticks” for people who want to remember how terrified they were to go into the water. The music from future “Star Wars” composer John Williams certainly helped Steven Spielberg kick off the modern blockbuster featuring the scariest fish since Moby Dick (OK, technically, neither were fish); they re-teamed on several other films. “Imperial March (Martin Solveig Remix)” : “The Imperial March” has been synonymous with ominous evil, impending doom, villainous tyranny and light sabers that only come in the color red since the original “Star Wars” movie kicked off an enduring worldwide phenomenon in 1977. It’s impossible to hear this theme without picturing Darth Vader boarding the starship transporting Princess Leia, holding that guy up in the air by the throat and demanding to know various things. So cool! “Superman Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Hey, what do you know! Another John Williams score. And another grandiose theme that’s synonymous with the film. The music instantly conjures the image of the late, great Christopher Reeve soaring through the skies of Metropolis as Superman. Whether battling Kryptonian super villains, trading barbs with Lex Luthor or romancing Lois Lane (let’s not mention that Richard Pryor entry), Supes was defined by this killer theme.
