Wimbledon Champions Will Receive £1M Prize Money

The Wimbledon organizers have increased the prize money for both the men’s and women’s champions to £1 million ($1.53 million). The total prize for the event will be £13.725 million. The All England Club agreed to pay women the same prize money as men. The £1million prize for the year 2010 ladies single’s champion is more than double compared to the prizes 8 years ago. According to Tim Phillips, the chairman of All England Club, Wimbledon exists in a highly competitive global marketplace and it is the world’s best players who give and drive the interest of the people. As a result, it is important to offer them a level of prize money which is both appropriate to the prestige of the event and that gives the players full and fair reward. This year’s tournament will run from June 21 to July 4 and it will be a “World Cup-free zone”, since football fans were denied to watch matches on the big screens at the All England Club.
