Johnny Depp Explains Bumpy Ride Of ‘Lone Ranger’

‘We knew that the budget was going to be huge initially,’ he tells MTV News of back-and-forth budget talks. By Kara Warner Johnny Depp Photo: WireImage Much like the unforgivable and unpredictable nature of the American Old West, the plight of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski’s big-screen adaptation of “The Lone Ranger” has been quite a bumpy ride. The film got the green light earlier this year, with Depp settled into the role of Tonto and Armie Hammer selected to play the Ranger . Then in August, Disney put a halt on the production with claims that the budget was too big. Just this week, negotiations ended on a happy note, with the production back in full swing and a tentative start date scheduled for early next year. MTV News caught up with Depp as he promoted “The Rum Diary” to find out why “Ranger” is so important to him and why the budget became such a big issue for the studio bigwigs. “I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny,” he said. “But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood, the Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don’t see Tonto that way at all. So it’s an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans.” With regard to the back-and-forth budget talks with the studio, Depp admitted that he and director Verbinski knew they’d be in for some negotiating from the get-go, but they also planned to be patient. “We knew that the budget was going to be huge initially, and we also knew that it was going to be shut down for a while, and it was kind of like we patiently wait — we shave a little bit here, we do a little bit there, [and] they fix it.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears Responds To ‘Criminal’ Video Controversy

‘The video is a fantasy story,’ statement says after U.K. criticism that the clip glorifies violence. By James Montgomery Britney Spears and Jason Trawick on the set of her “Criminal” video shoot Photo: Eagle Eyes / Splash News When Britney Spears flew to London earlier this month to shoot her video for “Criminal,” she probably didn’t think the clip would generate the kind of controversy it has. And yet, in the week since she wrapped filming, Spears has been taken to task by politicians in the U.K. for a scene in the video, in which the pop star packs a pistol as she flees a London-area building. They’ve claimed that the image of Brit gripping a gun glamorizes violence and, in the aftermath of the widespread riots that rattled the nation last month, the pop star should “apologize … for the rudeness and damage that she’s done to our community.” Late Monday (September 26), MTV News received a statement from Spears’ camp about the “Criminal” controversy — and, from the sound of things, she’s not going to be apologizing anytime soon. “The video is a fantasy story featuring Britney’s boyfriend, Jason Trawick, which literally plays out the lyrics of a song written three years before the riots ever happened,” the statement read. Criticisms of the “Criminal” video began last week, after images of Spears and Trawick making an escape from an apparent robbery (with Brit brandishing a replica revolver) began making the rounds. The scene in question was shot in the London borough of Hackney, which was hit hard by the August riots, and local politicians were upset by what they saw as an insensitive gesture by Spears. “It is only a music video, but it’s images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people … get drawn in,” Hackney’s Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, told the ITV news program “London Tonight.” “Britney should really know better.” Hackney’s council members — who gave Spears’ camp the OK to shoot at the nearby Stoke Newington Town Hall — also took issue with the fact that no one involved with the production of the “Criminal” video mentioned that a gun was to be used in the clip and, had they known, they would not have allowed filming in the recently restored building. “In this case we did not agree that a replica gun could be used at Stoke Newington Town Hall and are disappointed,” the council said in a statement to “London Tonight.” “We will be raising this matter with the production company.” Related Artists Britney Spears

Daphne Guinness on Food: Who Needs It?!

Heiress and fashion icon Daphne Guinness is raising eyebrows this week as the subject of a profile in this week’s issue of The New Yorker magazine. In it, Daph displayed her affinity for style over comfort. Put more succinctly, she’ll starve herself to look good. The article describes Guinness at a David-Bowie inspired photo shoot, where she didn’t mind taking pains to make her fashion look original: “To incarnate Ziggy Stardust, she let a stylist place an enormous metallic collar around her neck; the stylist apologized for any discomfort. “Are you kidding?” Guinness said. ‘Uncomfortable is the name of the game.'” During the shoot, she also declined to mix food and fashion, because, according to the heiress, the two are kind of mutually exclusive. “Teresa Alfonso, Guinness’s personal assistant, tried to get her to eat some of the pasta that had been prepared for the production team.” “‘If I eat, I can’t work,’ Guinness, who had been subsisting on a very healthy diet of Red Bull and Ensure, said. ‘I’ll eat when I’m dead.'” Guinness is the subject of an exhibition at the Museum at F.I.T., featuring clothes and accessories from her massive personal collection. It’s on display until January, if her malnourished frame lasts that long. Let’s just hope Kirstie Alley’s weight loss doesn’t get this extreme … Daphne Guinness Interview

Brad Pitt Explains Making ‘Moneyball’ Without Steven Soderbergh

Pitt tells MTV News it was studio’s call to tap new director Bennett Miller, who proved to be right man for the sports flick. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Brad Pitt in “Moneyball” Photo: Columbia TriStar Steven Soderbergh had nothing if not grand ambitions for his take on “Moneyball.” “I hope it sets a new standard,” he told MTV News in the spring of 2009. “Hopefully, anybody who makes a sports movie from now on is going to have to grapple with this.” Soderbergh’s plan for the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ best-selling book about the 2002 Oakland A’s included re-creating the bowels of Oakland Coliseum and casting ballplayers and coaches to play their big-screen counterparts. The filmmaker also proposed, most ambitiously (and probably a bit bizarrely), the use of an Oracle-like persona, based on the legendary statistician Bill James, presented as an animated character and commissioned with narrating the action. Grand stuff, no doubt, but also perhaps not the stuff that would lead anyone beyond sports nuts and movie nerds to buy tickets to check it out. And so Sony pulled the plug on the production days before filming was to begin. “Moneyball” appeared to be dead. But at the suggestion of Catherine Keener, Sony tapped Bennett Miller, who had worked with Keener on “Capote,” to helm the picture. Years later, with the movie set to hit theaters on Friday, star Brad Pitt has no doubt Miller was the perfect guy for the job. “I think it is the right way to do ‘Moneyball.’ Soderbergh was really heading in the same direction, in a sense,” Pitt told MTV News. Sort of. Miller’s version certainly doesn’t have an animated Bill James. We have a feeling Pitt would have been keen to move forward with Soderbergh, with whom he’s worked on the “Ocean’s Eleven” films. But it wasn’t Pitt’s call, and he’s no doubt correct that Miller delivered a top-notch sports flick. “That was a studio call,” Pitt said of pushing Soderbergh out. “And, man, we want to get the thing going! We didn’t have a choice but to remount it in some way. … [We] sat down with Bennett and we were just talking the same language. Just love the ’70s films. What you’ll see about Bennett is he’s a very, very bright and thoughtful man and deals with Socratic thought and was a documentarian and all these things that led nicely to the telling of these stories.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Moneyball.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jennifer Aniston Goes "Ballistic" Over Brad Pitt Comments, Report Says

For a notoriously private guy, Brad Pitt surprisingly opened up a can of worms with his comments about his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston in Parade magazine. Remarks the actress and her camp are said to have “gone ballistic” over. Regardless of the Moneyball star’s intentions, saying he wasn’t leading an interesting or fulfilling life pre-Angelina Jolie, and that he was “trying to pretend my marriage was something that it wasn’t” reated a PR firestorm. How did the former Mrs. Pitt react? “She was annoyed,” a pal close to the Horrible Bosses star says. “She thought that it was rude and inappropriate.” Team Aniston angrily reached out to Pitt’s representatives, according to Us Weekly , and “They got his team involved and Brad was read the riot act.” Within 24 hours, Pitt had surprisingly released a statement clarifying and lamenting the pretend marriage comment while praising his former spouse. Jen “is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman,” Brad swears. Still, the Pitt source says, despite his claims that it was all spun wrong , “no one believes his words were taken out of context – he said what he said.” Why say that in any context? Yhough Pitt is clearly happy with Angelina Jolie and their kids, “We think he’s jealous [Jen’s] in love,” the source says.

Charlie’s Angels Staffer Fired For Minka Kelly Groping

A crew member on the set of ABC’s Charlie’s Angels set has been fired after he gave Minka Kelly’s butt a little smack on the set. Yes, we’re serious. There’s a report that the guy was holding a $100 bill when he slapped her, and the star retaliated with a slap right back. TMZ says that is not the case. However, she did get slapped and she was not happy. What Kelly did do, according to sources connected to the production, is respond, “Please don’t ever disrespect me or any other woman like that again.” Given ABC’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, the guy was immediately banned from the set and subsequently fired when bosses found out. For what it’s worth, Minka did not want the guy fired and had nothing to do with the decision, and was reportedly upset that he was , despite the slap. ABC sources say this was not an isolated incident, however, and the guy had done it to other women before getting inappropriate with Derek Jeter’s ex. Similar to Brett Favre’s inappropriate “courtship” of Jenn Sterger , the problem wasn’t the guy’s taste, just his tactics. Restrain yourself, man. Yeesh. [Photo: WENN.com]

Real Housewives of New York City Speak on Ousting

Jill Zarin, Alex McCord, Kelly Bensimon and Cindy Barshop have all been sacked. Bravo cut these four women loose from The Real Housewives of New York City late last week. While readers try to control their tears as a result of this development, a couple of the show’s now-former stars have spoken out about the firing. “I view any change as an opportunity to learn and grow,” said Barshop profoundly. “RHONY was great marketing platform for my national spa Completely Bare, and as an ambassador for children’s charities I was able to create more awareness. There are additional projects that I am considering. Stay tuned.” Oh, we will… NOT! Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen also took the opportunity to plug a product, telling Us Weekly : “After four seasons on Real Housewives of New York City, Simon and I are moving on. It’s a completely friendly departure and while it was their decision and not ours, we are in close communication with both Bravo and the production company about our next move, in addition to fielding outside offers. “Simon and I recently launched a home goods company, Aluxe Home, and we’ve been so involved in the textile market week that began today that it feels a bit like being shot out of a cannon!” Too bad they actually weren’t.
