‘Jonah Hex’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before heading off to the Wild West with Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, check in with our cheat sheet. By Eric Ditzian Megan Fox and Josh Brolin in “Jonah Hex” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The 2010 summer-movie season has given us swords-and-sandals epics, superhero melees and a cavalcade of 3-D animated blockbusters. What we haven’t yet seen is a straight-up western, partly because that gun-toting, tobacco-chewing genre has largely fallen out of favor in Hollywood. All that changes Friday (June 18), as “Jonah Hex” rides into theaters in a storm of CGI dust and supernatural-inspired storytelling. Josh Brolin stars as Hex himself, a facially scarred bounty hunter with a taste for bullets, broads and revenge. His adversary is John Malkovich’s Quentin Turnbull, who thinks it would be a good idea to unleash the fires of hell on the entire planet. Hex doesn’t think that’s such a swell idea, plus Turnbull’s the dude who killed his family and hot-branded his face, so a quest for vengeance sounds like a pretty good idea. Before you take your own quest to the cinema this weekend, be sure to check out MTV News’ cheat sheet: everything you need to know about “Jonah Hex.” Wrangling the Horses In the early 1970s, writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga created “Jonah” for DC Comics, and the surly antihero continues to appear within DC pages to this day. It wasn’t until summer 2007, though, that Warner Bros. began to ramp up plans to bring the character to the big screen. Brolin began circling the role of Jonah in late 2008 and stayed interested even as directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (“Crank”) parted ways with the production over creative differences. Why did Brolin stay on? “When I first read it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s awful!’ ” Brolin told MTV News . “And then I had a moment a week later, and I thought, ‘Why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.’ ” Malkovich found the movie in early ’09, followed shortly by Megan Fox as a Wild West prostitute named Lilah. In April, we got our first look at the Louisiana-based production, thanks to some rather revealing on-set pics of Fox . Not to be outdone by his sultry co-star, Brolin made his presence as Jonah known in June, when the first photos surfaced of the actor in full, facial prosthetics. Enter the Hex As the year pushed forward, we began to hear from almost everyone with a key role in the production. Brolin spoke glowingly of new director Jimmy Hayward (“Horton Hears a Who!”), Malkovich told us why he signed on for the role, and Fox said of the production , “I think it’s a really good interpretation of the comic. It somehow manages to be super-violent while still having a PG-13 rating. I don’t know how they did that.” Neither do we, but the whole thing seemed to be shaping up quite nicely. Comic-Con brought us the film’s first poster and fresh promo pics followed in the fall. Then trouble set in. Re-shoots kicked off in January of this year, intended to fix unspecified problems with the footage and to be overseen by “I Am Legend” director Francis Lawrence, who was hired as a consultant. And as the June release date approached, fans started to wonder when the first trailer would arrive. It finally appeared at the very end of April — and it looked fairly rad — but questions remained. Days before the trailer dropped, Brolin himself told us the film was very much in flux. “We’re still in the process of solidifying that tone,” he said. “There’s a lot of humor to use in this cut. We’ve been going, ‘How much humor do we use? Do we stay with the emotional line of the story? How can we release some of the exposition so we can just rely on the action?’ All this kind of sh–. We’re in the midst of it, man!” We’re Going Straight to the Wild Wild West From Will Smith and Escape Club songs to the decades’ worth of face-off-at-high-noon flicks, the Wild West has proved fertile creative ground across the pop-culture spectrum. It remains to be seen, however, if “Jonah” can overcome its troubled production history and win big at the box office. The sneak peeks certainly look good: there’s Jonah facing off against Turnbull ; Jonah and Lilah trying to get out of a jam and then showing off their shooting skills ; Jonah getting a little sensitive about his disfigured face; and Jonah riding a horse with a Gatling gun strapped to its side . So will fans come out in support of this latest comic book adaptation? Is there a chance there will be more cinematic “Jonah” coming down the line? Producers have certainly planned for that possibility. “They leave it open for a sequel,” Fox told us . “They tweaked the script so there might be a sequel if necessary.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Lady Gaga Will Have Giant Stage At Lollapalooza, Perry Farrell Promises

‘We spent close to $150,000 to house the production she’s gonna do,’ says festival organizer and Jane’s Addiction frontman. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Marco Prosch/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is set to storm the Lollapalooza stage this August. It’ll be the pop princess’s first appearance at the festival in three years, and this time around Gaga is upping the performance ante. She wants everyone to know that she’s graduated from side-stage performer to accomplished headlining act. Back in 2007, when she first appeared at the festival on the side stage, her getups were so elaborate that she even bested more well-known acts like festival founder and Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. “I actually said, ‘Who’s the chick with all the clothes, because this is my festival and she’s got [a lot of clothes racks]. We’ve got one rack,’ ” Farrell told MTV News at the Activision E3 party in Los Angeles. “I gotta follow this chick and see what’s going on.” Despite the clothes envy, Gaga managed to win Farrell over. “But she had this sweet smile,” he recalled. “And she was real mischievous, so I liked her.” Now, Gaga is more elaborate than ever, having requested a very expensive stage setup for her set. “Yeah, she asked for a giant stage,” Farrell explained. “So we spent like $100,000 to give her a giant stage. We spent close to $150,000 to house the production she’s gonna do. And I say yeah, let’s do it.” Gaga will be joined by fellow headliners including Green Day, the recently reunited Soundgarden, the re-formed Strokes, the Arcade Fire and Phoenix when the festival kicks off on August 6 in Chicago’s Grant Park. John Ikerd: The Future of Sustainability Is Relocalization

This year’s Ontario Heritage Conference was all about rural communities, and there were the expected presentations about saving barns and old churches. But the remarkable thing about the conference was the strong environmental theme, with the tone set by John Ikerd, a retired professor of agricultural economics. He laid out a vision of revitalized, relocalized rural communities that would solve energy and environmental problems through the production of ” solar powered renewable energy and renewability machines”- plants. He notes that times are to… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Charlize Theron Talks New ‘Mad Max’ Film, ‘Fury Road’

‘I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron Photo: MTV News Charlize Theron would love to share a few details about her much-hyped role in the upcoming Mad Max film, “Fury Road,” but she’s terrified the filmmakers would punish her for giving up any details. “They would kill me,” she told MTV News, just after receiving the Decade of Hotness honors at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards. “They’re listening to everything I’m saying right now,” she said conspiratorially. “It’s so top-secret they would destroy me.” Theron did, however, express enthusiasm for leading man Tom Hardy and director George Miller. “[Tom’s] amazing,” she said. “I think his work in [2009’s] ‘Bronson’ was incredible.” Theron went on to explain that veteran writer/director Miller being attached to the film was her main reason for signing on to this fourth installment in the “Mad Max” franchise. “I wanted to go and do this because I felt that George Miller — well, he’s a genius — and the idea of doing something that has this mass audience appeal with great actors — that is a dream come true. So I’m super excited about that.” The Academy Award-winning actress likened the production to embarking on an adventure. “It’s obnoxious for actors to say this, but I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.” Also joining Theron and Hardy are castmembers Nicholas Hoult (“Clash of the Titans”), Teresa Palmer (“Bedtime Stories”) and Adelaide Clemens (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”). Production is reportedly scheduled to begin in Australia sometime this August. Mel Gibson , who famously brought the original “Mad” Max Rockatansky to life more than 30 years ago, told MTV News earlier this year that he “can’t wait to see” the new film. “Look, whatever George does, I think George is a genius, and whatever he is going to do with that franchise, he’s got good reason for doing it,” Gibson said. The action star, now in his 50s, said he was glad to have passed on the torch to Hardy: “I can’t take the punishment for that sort of thing.” Are you excited to see “Fury Road” once it opens? Guillermo del Toro Admits: ‘I am No Longer an Official Voice for The Hobbit’

The Hobbit may be down a director amidst turmoil at MGM, but it keeps moving right along. (Psst, Lost fans: we hear that Widmore and Keamy both went in to read for roles this past week). Since Guillermo del Toro bolted from the production last week, he’s promised to deliver a second statement about just what went down, and that longer missive came late last night. His explanation? Yeah, it was basically that whole “I wanted my life back ever endless delays” thing.

Israeli Medical Scientists Discover Heart-Saving Algae

Israeli researchers and scientists from Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva (BGU) have recently discovered a strain of micro-algae that has enough polyunsaturated fatty acid to treat high blood pressure, cholesterol, chronic inflammation and potentially reduce the risk of heart attacks. According to research, the algae is the only known plant source capable of absorbing and producing the acid responsible for the production of good circulation in red blood cells. The plant also possesses high density lipoproteins (HDL), which transport cholesterol away from blood tissue and through the liver, in order for it to be put to use. Scientists believe that the algae mutant being studied has properties that could be highly beneficial in the treatments of a range of heart-related diseases. http://www.shalomlife.com/eng/12834/Israeli_Medical_Scientists_Discover_Heart-Sa… added by: datamined

Tupac Should Be Played By Unknown Actor, Biopic Director Says

‘I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be,’ Antoine Fuqua says of casting Shakur film. By Jayson Rodriguez Tupac Photo: Chi Modu Following the success of the Biggie Small’s biopic “Notorious,” and the announcement late last year that a Run-DMC flick is in the works, director Antoine Fuqua recently revealed his next project would be a feature about the life of Tupac Shakur . “It looks like we’re doing Tupac Shakur’s movie next in September, that’s what I’ve been starting up and working on now,” Fuqua told the British entertainment website Digital Spy on Friday. “I’ve been working on that for a while with Morgan Creek and [the production company’s CEO] Jim Robinson. I just got the green light from him and we’re going in September. I’ve just started to prep that.” Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”) told Digital Spy that he would like to see a fresh face in the role of the iconic rapper, who was gunned down in 1996. For “Notorious,” producers set out on a nationwide search for an upstart actor to play the Notorious B.I.G., before deciding on local Brooklyn rapper Jamal “Gravy” Woolard. Anthony Mackie, who had earlier played Tupac in an off-Broadway play, tied on the signature bandana again to play the West Coast rapper in “Notorious.” But Fuqua seems intent on finding multiple newcomers to play various parts in the yet-untitled project. “That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Fuqua said. “I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world.” Who do you think should play Tupac in a biopic? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Tupac

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is the New Megan Fox

Please don’t shoot us Heidi Montag: but you won’t be taking over for Megan Fox in Transformers 3 . Multiple sources have confirmed that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is coming aboard the franchise, starting with this July 2011 release. “She’s accepted the offer, and I think they’re just waiting for her to get her work visa since she’s British,” an insider close to the production tells E! News. Huntington-Whiteley is a Victoria’s Secret model with “absolutely zero acting experience,” said a source. But she and director Michael Bay worked on a commercial together last year and hit it off. “He likes her, and that’s all that matters,” the source added, saying Rosie beat out Brooklyn Decker for the role. Huntington-Whiteley has rather big, beautiful, incredibly sexy shoes to fill now. Think she’s capable of taking over for Fox? Which of these beauties would you rather slip it to?
