Green Day, ‘American Idiot’ Cast Celebrate ‘Legit Rock And Roll’ Opening Night

‘The night was electric,’ actor Tony Vincent says at afterparty. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt at the “American Idiot” afterparty Photo: MTV News With opening night of the “American Idiot” musical officially in the books, the guys in Green Day can officially focus on something else that’s important: enjoying their natural high. “This is the highest moment I think we’ve ever had as a band, in the 21 years we’ve been around,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News at the “Idiot” afterparty, held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on Tuesday night. “And we’ve been pretty high,” drummer Tre Cool interjected. That feeling of euphoria extended to the cast of “Idiot,” too. After all, they’ve been working on the production for close to two years now, shepherding it through rehearsals, a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater last year and, finally, to Broadway. It’s been a labor of love every step of the way, so, you know, they were feeling pretty good at the party too. “It’s one of those nights that’s going to be really difficult to put into words in the future,” John Gallagher Jr., who plays Johnny, said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been working on the show for almost two years, so to open it on Broadway — which has always been the ultimate dream, the ultimate destination — it’s just been incredible.” “The night was electric, because the house was incredibly endorsing of us, from the time that the curtain went up,” added Tony Vincent, who plays St. Jimmy. “And when it went down, there was this huge relief, that what we brought to Broadway was legit rock and roll, for the first time in, I think, possibly, ever. And we killed it tonight.” Early reviews of the show have been equally gushing — The New York Times called the production “thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought” — and so, there seemed to be nothing to do besides celebrate. After all, it’s been a long journey to get to this point. “[It was] unbelievable. Just completely unbelievable,” Michael Esper, who plays Will, said. “The experience of doing this show tonight was something I will never forget as long as I live. The excitement from the house, the feeling onstage, the love between everybody, it was overpowering.” Do you plan on seeing “American Idiot” on Broadway? Chace Crawford Flees Footloose

Chace Crawford has pulled a Zac Efron . No, not the hair … though that would apply. The Gossip Girl star has unexpectedly backed out of the casting-plagued remake of Footloose , rendering the production once again short its leading man. The film has been in the works, at least in theory, for a long time now, first with Efron scheduled to headline it and then Crawford. Both have bailed out. Zac reportedly did not want to be typecast as the dude from cheesy, dance-themed films. Understandable. Chace’s Gossip Girl schedule is the culprit. CUT LOOSE : Chace Crawford has … by his own volition . As for which fleet-footed pretty boy may step in next? The studio may try to solve its casting woes by searching for an unknown star. Not a bad move. Fortunately, still attached to the project, meanwhile, is former Dancing With the Stars cutie Julianne Hough. Who wouldn’t sign on for that alone?

Jane Lynch, who plays the tough-as-nails gym teacher Sue Sylvester on the hit show, assured us that Sue will be back to her old, mean tricks. “She terrorizes everybody, still. She gets inappropriate with a bunch of guys. There’s a lot of sexual blackmail,” she told MTV News at the premiere party. “She does a little singing with Olivia Newton John. She gets put in her place in a very interesting, cruel ways by Mr. Will Schuester himself. He gets kind of rough with her and he really hurts her feelings.” This season fans of the show will also get to learn a bit more about why Sue acts the way she does. “We learn more about Sue and, then again, she’s the same person who puts kids in a headlock,” she said. “Sue’s kind of exacting revenge now because I believe she was treated really poorly as a high school kid and now … she’s going to get her power back. And she’s going to terrorize everybody, even though she’s 30 years older than these kids … she perceives as being one of those kids. She’s gonna get ’em back!” Lynch also admitted that having a new generation of guys fawning all over her does feel kind of good. “Sixteen-year-old boys are like my demo now,” she said. “I was saying on ‘Oprah,’ not to drop names, those boys when I was a kid [didn’t pay attention to me] and now the 14-year-old girl in me [gets excited] … It’s great!” What are you looking forward to seeing on the new season of “Glee”? Keira Knightley Gutted By Missing ‘My Fair Lady’ Role

Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightley is reportedly “gutted” at missing out on the lead role in a movie adaptation of My Fair Lady . According to the Sunday Mirror , Knightley, 25, has reportedly been working hard with singing lessons in a bid to get the role but lost out to An Education star Carey Mulligan , 24. “Keira wanted to play the role. She’s been linked to the production for nearly four years. She’s always loved Audrey Hepburn, who starred in the original movie, and had spent the last year working her backside off with private singing lessons. She knew she didn’t have a huge voice but she was willing to put the effort in for the role. It would have been a role of a lifetime for Keira, and she’s gutted that it hasn’t worked out.” As disappointed as Keira is, we think Carey is a much better choice.

Lauren Conrad On Her Return To TV: ‘We’ll See’

‘I loved being involved with television,’ former ‘Hills’ star says. By Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad Photo: MTV News Lauren Conrad found fame and fans as the star of “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” but in 2009 she decided to leave the world of reality TV behind to pursue her interests in fashion design and the literary arts. Now with a successful clothing line at Kohl’s and two successful novels under her belt with a third one and a movie adaptation on the way , will Conrad be returning to TV? “I loved being involved with television, so currently I’m working on more of the production side, but I’m trying to figure out where I want to go from there,” she shared with MTV News. “I had my break. My break was nice, so we’ll see. Well, we will see.” While she’s mulling that over, she does keep with her the lessons she learned — and hopes that her fans learned — about the world of reality TV. “I think that if fans take anything away from the book, [they should realize] there’s a back side to every story,” she said. “And when you’re reading tabloids and seeing these people’s lives exposed, it does affect them and it is hard to go through as a young girl.” Conrad has been forthcoming about not returning to “The Hills.” “I’m not planning on it,” she said last year. “I’m happy with the time I walked away, and I think that from now on, they’re going to pick it up and do a great show. But I think that my time on it is done.” If Conrad does return to television, it will not be in a show about her life. “I wouldn’t do a show like ‘The Hills’ — nothing with my personal life, but possibly something hosting,” she offered. “I think I have a little bit of time to figure out what I’m going to do next.” What kind of show would you like to see Lauren on?
