Project Runway Recap: What a Pillbox

Sigh, girls. After a hot streak of almost shockingly entertaining episodes, Project Runway settled into a basic sportswear challenge that referenced Jackie Kennedy but packed the entertainment value of, say, Rosalynn Carter. Or Lou Hoover. Perhaps even Mirabelle Taft*. We did get to see the judges turn into Yeti and maul half the designers alive as they hyperventilated for gay mercy, so that was something. Let’s make fun of them. *Not Ms. Taft’s real name. Not looking it up.

What’s On: January Jones Has Something She’d Like to Say, Designers

Tonight is a momentous occasion, Mad Men fans: We get to see if January Jones can talk about fashion and style as a judge on Project Runway without the aid of costumer Janie Bryant standing in the wings. Elsewhere on the tube, look out for the return of The Apprentice , the verve of Nikita , and the stamina of one of the highest-grossing ’90s action movies.

At TIFF: History Class is in Session with Robert Redford’s Conspirator (Just Don’t Fall Asleep)

Behold the paradox of Robert Redford: Lauded as one of the most innovative, influential filmmaking advocates around, as a filmmaker he has acquired a reputation as a snooze and a scold. In turn, over the last decade especially, I have acquired a reciprocal Redford Reflex: When I heard that his as-yet-unacquired historical drama The Conspirator was screening at TIFF, I felt my eyelids droop ever so slightly, and my throat begin to dry. An independent project with a rich vein of history running through it could be double trouble or a revelation. Either way the Redford Reflex was in full effect; I knew my morning screening would require something large and violently caffeinated.

Tim Gunn Outs Taylor Momsen As ‘Pathetic’ Diva

Project Runway guru ( and friend to Movieline ) Tim Gunn is putting the “gossip” back in Gossip Girl . After filming a guest spot for the CW series recently, Gunn complained about 17-year-old Taylor Momsen, whom he shared a scene with. “What a diva!” he told E! News . “She was pathetic, she couldn’t remember her lines, and she didn’t even have that many. I thought to myself ‘why are we all being held hostage by this brat?” It gets better. As Momsen wasted precious crew time on her cell phone, Gunn rehearsed a hypothetical scolding. “I’d say, ‘You know young lady, there are hundreds of thousands of girls who are just as attractive and even smarter than you. Why are you acting like this show is a huge burden on you?'” [ E! ]

Who Wins This Wicked Duet: Idina Menzel or Michael Kors?

Though Glee showstopper Idina Menzel originated the lead role in Broadway blockbuster Wicked , that really gives her no edge in this Fashion’s Night Out duet of “Defying Gravity” with Project Runway headmaster and towering coloratura Michael Kors. He’s got the disapproving snarl to woo the Great Wide Way, the black blazer to dazzle even the most curmudgeonly theatergoer, and the topaz complexion to illuminate Times Square for weeks. They’re evenly matched — just see for yourself:

Project Runway Recap: Cut My Life Into Pieces. This Is My Best Resort Wear.

That might be the first time I’ve started a Project Runway recap with a Papa Roach reference , but it won’t be the last. (Kidding.) Michael Kors harassed the designers into making resort wear in last night’s episode, and in a twist, Tim Gunn raised his arm like a sorcerer and made everyone pair up to sew each others’ garments. Ivy devolved into a shrieking hedgehog for a change, and some of the others were insufferable too. Let’s see how it all went.

Jessica Simpson Keeps Growing And Growing

This is yet another disappointing start to the day involving Jessica Simpson’s ever growing waistline. Here she is leaving the Project Runway runway show where she was a judge for the season finale. I don’t know how the producers let her get away with wearing this bedazzled garbage bag as a dress, but that’s another issue. Anyhow, it’s pretty clear that her chubcakes have grown substantially and I for one want to see them. Stat!

In the Hamptons, Today’s Young Summer Campers are Tomorrows Green Fashion Designers (Photos)

Packing paper with recycled trim. Credit: Patti Robinson When Patti Robinson, a summer camp instructor at The Art Farm in Bridgehampton, NY, sent over some photos of recycled fashion, I was intrigued — especially with the shape and design of the one, above — and even more so when she told me that the young campers who crafted these designs ranged between the ages of eight and twelve. This summer, Patti, a self-proclaimed Project Runway fan, struck up a recycled fashion challenge; it quickly became a camp favorite and evolved into a summer-long program, called “Gene… Read the full story on TreeHugger
