Like millions of us, Malcolm D. Lee has an affinity for old school Hip-Hop music and culture. Now that his latest film Night School is about to hit theaters, the Queens, New York filmmaker is focusing on a comedy based around the most beloved era in Hip-Hop. According to Deadline , Malcolm D. Lee is working with Universal on a new project called Real Talk which centers around an old school rapper who’s on a mission to reunite his group from yesteryear in an effort to reclaim the number one spot that they held back in the day. No word on who’s being targeted to star in said movie but Radha Blank has been confirmed to be penning the film with Lee of course directing and producing the project under his Blackmailed Productions company. While details are scarce at this point Malcolm D. Lee has had a successful history when it comes to Black comedy movies. Oh my goodness the brand new trailer for Creed II is out and it already has us hype for Thanksgiving. The film stars Michael B. Jordan reprising his role from the original Creed as Adonis Creed, son of the legendary Apollo Creed. This time, things are different for Adonis. He’s a champion and he and his girlfriend Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson have a family together. However, Creed II is all about a rivalry four decades in the making: Creed vs. Drago. If you recall in the original Rocky franchise, Creed’s father Apollo was killed by Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren . Well, guess who is opposite Adonis in the ring for his latest superfight? Based on the 1992 film that starred Berry, Eddie Murphy , Robin Givens , Martin Lawrence , and a slew of other high-profile actors, the 10-episode television series will follow the lives of Jacqueline’s son and Marcus’ daughter, as they try to step out of their parents’ shadow. Berry is excited about the new venture. In the press release, she showed Waithe nothing but love, commenting “I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trail blazer in her own right. I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen.” Meanwhile, Waithe paid homage to the original. “This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story,” she clarified. “There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!” Lena also said via Instagram , “What you think about you bring about. And there are very few things I spent more time thinking about than BOOMERANG when I was a kid. He’s basically Stonehenge in sneakers. Although Kawhi is under no responsibility to be as animated, as say, a Busta Rhymes, a lil’ personality can often be good for a star athlete’s brand off the court. That said, today, the first day of NBA training camp, Kawhi attempted to speak as a fully formed human to the pool of press folk who were eager to ask questions of the tranquil baller. After all, he has a new team, the Toronto Raptors, and hopefully a new attitude after it appears that he was…non-communicative with his previous place of employment, the San Antonio Spurs, toward the end of their professional relationship. Apple has an upcoming streaming service launching soon featuring original scripted and documentary content, however, they’ve yanked Dr. Dre’s new series Vital Signs , because it’s just a little too much for their vision. Word is, Apple exec Tim Cook wants to keep their new streaming service as family-friendly as possible, and Dr. Dre’s dramatized life story is, unsurprisingly, far from PG-13. According to Complex , a Wall Street Journal story confirms that the semi-autobiographical drama centering Dr. Dre’s life features characters doing lines of cocaine, drawing guns, and even features an extended orgy scene — pretty much all the stuff you’d expect from Dre’s NWA days and beyond. But apparently, Apple is seeking to separate itself from streaming services like those of Netflix and HBO by focusing on family-friendly, middle-of-the-road content and shying away from violence, graphic sexual depictions, or hot-button societal issues. The show has been in production since 2016, so it’s not as if the powers that be had no inkling of the content therein…but Cook personally pulled the project to keep the streaming service “pure.” SMH. According to TheDetroitNews , in an FBI crime data report released this morning, Detroit has moved up to the 2nd most violent big city in America. The report concludes that murders in the motor city have actually decreased since the FBI’s last Uniform Crime Report in 2017. In that report Detroit sat at a staggering 303 murders, which has dropped significantly to 267 murders. But apparently this doesn’t effect the report because violent crimes outside of murder have increased in the city. In 2016 the city had 13, 705 violent crimes which includes: murder, rape, assault, and robbery. Unfortunately for Detroit that number saw a rise to 13,796 in 2017. Detroit’s crime rate is now at 2,057 violent crimes per 100,000 people. This number is only higher in one city in America; St. Louis, MO. Detroit has beaten other metropolitan cities like Baltimore, Memphis, and Kansas City. The good news is that Detroit is not the city with the highest murder rate, but that comes with bad news as well, we are still in the top three. The highest murder rate also goes to St. Louis, Missouri, with 205 murders at a rate of 66 per 100,000 citizens. Baltimore falls in 2nd place at 342 murders at a rate of 56 per 100,000 citizens, and in third place is our city which is currently sitting at, 40 murders per 100,000 citizens. The Detroit News also reported that violent crimes in the country overall have fallen 0.2 percent over the last year, which is great news for the country overall. We just hope that with the reinvigoration of downtown, that we can possibly get aboard this same objective and bring the violent crime number down in the city. For those who live in the Detroit Metro area, it is no secret that there is a staggering poverty level that seems to be rising within the city, while suburbs notice significant growth in that regard. This is a great contributor to violent crimes, and without an acknowledgment of this we may not see any decreases in violent crimes. This is just another reason why citizens in Detroit and its surrounding cities should make sure to register to vote for Novembers mid-term elections. This is one of the most important elections in our city’s history and we should all make it a goal to make our voices heard at the polls this year. Recently, things got intense when Kevin Hart went HARD on Katt Williams for shadingTiffany Haddish in an interview (to big up other Black women in comedy). Luenell thinks they should ALL stop beefing, because it’s the studios not giving Black comedians — especially Black funny women, opportunities. Luenell says that she, Kevin Hart, Katt Williams, Mike Epps and Tiffany Haddish all starred in a movie called “School Dance”, written and produced by Nick Cannon and Lionsgate PLAYED them all. The movie was never released in theaters, because Lionsgate was finicky. Also, the actors were NEVER PAID. Let’s fix this bullsh*t & quit playin’ b 4 somebody get Hurt around this b*tch! Actually we ALL got f**ked on This deal, Nick included. This should have been released n theaters All Across the Country! Whereas the preceding single, “Fall In That B*tch,” had more of a spaced-out, late-night vibe to it, “Ferragamo” is a bouncy burner made for the final days of summer. It’s also filled with stylish and clever braggadocio, which is fitting given the track’s inspiration—famed Italian designer, Salvatore Ferragamo. The single also further demonstrates just how well 6orn (f/k/a Born) works with the Grammy-winning Zaytoven, who for the first time ever is producing an entire album for a rapper from north of ATL. Given his hit-making prowess, you know Zay wouldn’t work with just anyone, and he and 6orn absolutely gel on the singles they’ve delivered so far. It certainly bodes well for the entirety of Scales, which they will hopefully get to share with the world very soon. “Ferragamo” is available now through all major digital outlets and streaming platforms .
