‘Empire’ Recap: Jamal Lyon Gets The Best News Of His Life

The rest is here:

Source: FOX / Getty We finally get some good news on tonight’s episode of Empire . Kai, who has been missing in Nigeria for five days at this point, has been found. Jamal cheeses from ear to ear after getting the call with this news and heads to the hospital post haste! It’s obviously a joyous reunion. What ended up happening to Kai was that he and his crew got ambushed but managed to escape. However, it was a journey trying to get back to the US with no money or passport. This is also the moment we discover that Kai has HIV. Kai didn’t kick Cookie and Jamal out of the room when the doctor was giving him his medical run down. One of the things we learn, which clues us in, is that Kai’s viral load was high because he hadn’t been taking his medication (because he couldn’t). Jamal has known about Kai’s status and had been taking the proper precautions to keep himself negative (like taking PrEP , for example), but imagine Cookie’s shock when she discovers this! Jamal tries to explain to Cookie that she shouldn’t be worried, but she’s so shaken up that she goes home and spills the beans to Lucious. Cookie asks Lucious what they should do about this and Lucious surprises us all when he tells her they should mind their business. Cheers to growth. Lucious understands that you can’t keep two determined grown people apart. Cookie, however, is still a bit dense in getting that mainly because she needs to educate herself about HIV and AIDs, which she does, and because she’s just protective of her baby. Hakeem wants to get back with Tiana, and while she’s down for some d, she’s not convinced that she wants to be with him due to his antics and she wants to focus on getting her music career back together. That latter part takes a turn when Tiana presents new music to Kingsley at Empire and he hates it. He’s super rude to her and insults Hakeem . Basically, he wants her to scrap the project and start over. Becky seems to like it and side eyes Kingsley, who doesn’t deal well with managing artists interpersonally very well. The song was dope but the message here is obvious: Kingsley wouldn’t know a hit if he tripped over one while walking down the street. In other news, Lucious has been struggling with Devon. The thing with Devon is, he has the voice and the looks, but his presence, heart, and soul aren’t quite there. Lucious wants him to stop holding back and taps Jamal to come help. Jamal works his magic, of course, and successfully gets Devon ready to make his debut. We’ll get there in a second. Tiana surprise drops that track she did with Blake (the one where Hakeem wrote the lyrics for Blake and then Blake made Tiana promised that the song would stay between them) because she’s pissed off at Kingsley. Hakeem isn’t happy when he hears it because he’s jealous. Hold that thought. Now we’re at Devon’s performance. The audience is feeling him and so is a record label owner that Lucious has been courting. It’s a man that Lucious knows from back in the day and he wants to sign Devon. They got themselves a deal! Blake confronts Tiana about dropping the track because once again, that song was never supposed to come out. Then Tiana says when she “heard what Blake wrote” she just had to drop the track. Hakeem overhears this and gets pissed at the thought that people think that people think Blake wrote it and thinks Blake is trying to take credit. So, Hakeem does what he does, and punches Blake in the face multiple times. It’s also important to note (if you haven’t picked that up by now) that Hakeem also feels like Blake is trying to steal his woman. Blake and Hakeem get to fighting for a sec (it’s a miracle Hakeem is even breathing through this with his collapsed lung situation) and after it’s broken up, Hakeem has a flashback of Tiana in labor. She had a high-risk pregnancy with twins and a rough delivery. Ultimately, she almost died delivering a boy and a girl, and the girl died. They went through a lot of strife, but that doesn’t always mean they should be together. Tiana is tired of Hakeem’s volatile behavior and says she’s done with him. For real, for real. The episode wraps on a high note. Kai proposes to Jamal. He got the ring the moment he got out of the hospital. But guess what? Jamal planned to propose too! So then he gets down on his one knee and they pop the question to each other. Awww…but we’re still stressed out about who tf ends up dying! Marshawn Lynch Launches Initiative To Provide The Homeless With Smartphones

W hen NFL star Marshawn Lynch isn’t on the football field, he’s focused on giving back to those in need. His latest philanthropic project will provide the homeless population in Oakland and Seattle with smartphones, AfroTech reported. Marshawn Lynch Wants To Put Cellphones In The Hands Of The Homeless #AfroTech https://t.co/wyAsmTDxOO pic.twitter.com/genMidAF0m — Afrotech (@AfroTech) October 18, 2018 Lynch’s mobile device company Beast Mobile has joined forces with Fam1st Family Foundation to create an initiative called Phones for the Homeless. Through the project, 3,000 homeless people on the West Coast will receive smartphones and three months of free service. Each phone will come equipped with the Beast Mobile app which allows users to receive credits for playing games, participating in surveys and watching videos. Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation launched this project in efforts to examine the habits and whereabouts of individuals who are homeless so that they can better serve that population. They also hope that through this project those who receive the phones will be able to stay in touch with their loved ones and access the internet for resources. “There is a myth out there that homeless people already get phones from the Government. To qualify for a phone you must already receive some type of assistance like food stamps or Medicare/Medicaid. Also you need to have a home address which homeless people do not have,” read the initiative’s website . “With Seattle having the 3rd largest homeless population in the U.S. and Oakland (and the Bay Area) having the 4th largest, Beast Mobile and Fam1st Family Foundation are committed to providing a solution to help city officials communicate with this previously untrackable demographic.” Phones for the Homeless is currently working towards raising $250,000 to provide individuals with three months of free service. Bright Corporation has pledged to donate 3,000 phones. Homelessness has been a pressing issue in our country. A recent study revealed that Black Americans are about three times more likely to live on the streets than white Americans. Ole Miss Faculty, Students Fight To Have Journalism School Renamed After Ida B. Wells-Barnett

A racially suggestive Facebook post by a University of Mississippi donor has prompted faculty and students to lead an effort to rename their journalism school after Civil Rights advocate, journalist, and educator Ida B. Wells-Barnett , the Chicago Tribune reported. A Facebook post by a prominent university donor is denounced as racist, sparking a call to rename the Ole Miss journalism school for Chicago activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett https://t.co/iKKD1fTIlK pic.twitter.com/2FviDr7wjy — Chicago Tribune (@chicagotribune) October 7, 2018 According to the news outlet Ed Meek , one of the institution’s biggest donors, took to social media in September to post about a drop in the school’s enrollment. “A 3 percent decline in enrollment is nothing compared to what we will see if this continues … and real estate values will plummet as will tax revenues,” he wrote. “We all share in the responsibility to protect the values we hold dear that have made Oxford and Ole Miss known nationally.” He posted that Facebook status along with a photo of two Black University of Mississippi students, which for many insinuated that racial diversity was the cause of the decline in enrollment. After receiving backlash, Meek issued an apology but simply saying sorry wouldn’t suffice. It sparked a larger conversation about racism on campus; both in the past and present. A group of professors and students penned a letter asking that the journalism school—which is currently named after Meek—be renamed after Wells-Barnett. “Removing Ed Meek’s name from the School is a necessary, but basic, step in a much longer process of reparative justice,” read the letter, according to the news outlet. “Our university must firmly stand for its stated values of intellectual excellence, non-discrimination and inclusion and support for all its students.” The group is also asking for the removal of a Confederate statue on the Ole Miss campus and for journalism scholarships to be created for Black women who want to pursue careers in the media industry. The state College Board will have the final say in this matter. The University of Mississippi made the decision last year to include plaques in campus buildings that were built by slaves. Ole Miss isn’t the only higher education institution that is dealing with present-day racism and past ties to slavery. Last year, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey renamed areas of its campus to pay homage to the slaves who built the university from the ground up. Black Art History Initiative Launched By The Getty Institute

T he Getty Institute is working to preserve rich and historic Black artwork. According to the New York Times , the Los Angeles-based institution announced the creation of a new program that is centered on research surrounding African American artists and their work. The Getty to Start a Research Center for African-American Art. We're honored to be a partner institution. https://t.co/GiKkZKzqDg — CAAM (@CAAMinLA) September 25, 2018 Dubbed the African American Art History Initiative, the research center will focus on acquiring pieces and spearheading research projects that will provide more context about artists connected to the African Diaspora, the news outlet writes. The institute will team up with museums and organizations to push the research forward. Amongst institutions that they will partner with include Spelman College, Art+Practice, the California African American Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem. “The study of African American art history is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of American art history. We aim to bring our resources, talents, and relationships together to promote advanced research in an area of American art that has been underfunded and under researched,” James Cuno , president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust said in a statement . The project has a budget of $5 million. One of the first acquisitions under the initiative is the work of assemblage artist Betye Saar . “Saar is one of the major African-American artists in the region, somebody whom artists like John Outterbridge and David Hammons look up to. And she was born in 1926, so to start with something this wide-ranging is wonderful,” historian and project consultant Kellie Jones told the news outlet. She also added that the collaborative aspect of the project will “help move important archives out into other facets of the contemporary art world, whether the classroom or the museum.” There has been an ongoing effort—especially on the West Coast—to preserve historic elements of Black culture. Earlier this year, the African American Museum & Library at Oakland received a grant that will allow them to digitize rare footage of protests that took place during the 60s and 70s. Here’s What Millennials Think About Voting For A Black Candidate

Excerpt from:

M illennials, often thought to be less racist than earlier generations, have reservations about electing Black candidates. See Also: More White Millennials Are Not About The Democrat Life: Going To Sunken Place? There’s a gender and political divide among millennials when it comes to casting a ballot for qualified nonwhite candidates, a new BuzzFeed News and Maru/Blue survey, reported on Thursday, found. One out of three men (36 percent) said they would prefer a white political candidate if all else was equal. Just 11 percent of women survey shared that view. Republicans, at 42 percent, admitted that they would choose a white candidate over an equally qualified nonwhite candidate, as compared to 22 percent of Democrats who agreed with them. Pollsters surveyed 1,006 millennials, aged 22 to 37, online. The poll ran from Sept. 21 to 24. BuzzFeed News polled millennials about their political attitudes — some interesting stuff came out https://t.co/x1OxD3sQx9 full poll: https://t.co/xMmkMX2PY7 — Hilton, Shani O. (@shani_o) October 4, 2018 Decades after public school integration and the passage of civil rights legislation, many have wondered whether younger Americans are less racist than older generations. White millennials are not much different from generation x (born 1965 – 1980) or baby boomers (born 1946 – 1964) when it comes to explicit prejudice against African Americans, according to the Washington Post . Young whites expressed less prejudice on 4 out of 5 measures compared to older generations, but only by 1 to 3 percent, the Post’s analysis of data in 2015 found. A review in January of the University of Chicago’s GenForward Project survey of millennials by CBS News reinforced the Post’s analysis. One of the troubling findings of GenForward is that nearly half (48 percent) of white millennials believe that discrimination against white people has become as big a problem as discrimination against African Americans. Perhaps on a brighter side, the BuzzFeed survey showed that a majority of millennials disapproved of President Trump’s job performance. About 68 percent of them don’t like how he talks about Hispanic and Black people. However, that still leaves a sizeable minority who see no problem with the president’s racist attitude. Denzel Washington Leads Efforts To Restore August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Home

A fter bringing his theatrical works to the silver screen and on Broadway, Denzel Washington is honoring legendary playwright August Wilson in a different way. Actor Denzel Washington helps raise millions for transformation of August Wilson House — https://t.co/rx0T55aOhQ — KDKA (@KDKA) September 27, 2018 The home—which sits at 1727 Bedford Avenue—will become the August Wilson House; a space that will house exhibits, classes for aspiring writers, and host plays, the news outlet writes. So far several celebrities have stepped up to help bring the vision for the August Wilson House to fruition. Amongst those who have donated to the project—that is being spearheaded by Washington—includes Tyler Perry , Oprah Winfrey , Shonda Rhimes , and Spike Lee . There was a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. “I love August. He touches my soul, our souls. This is just like coming home to me. I feel so comfortable here,” Washington told the news outlet. “It starts with August and the wonderful people here and the commitment that we see today to this community, and I’m glad to be a part of that.” Wilson’s brother Richard Kittel says August would have been honored and humbled that his former house would be turned into a space to inspire playwrights, actors, and artists for generations to come. In 2015, Washington announced that he had landed a deal with HBO to produce nine of August Wilson’s plays for the cable network. “His stories are specifically African American stories, but the themes are universal,” Washington told the Hollywood Reporter . “He was just a bright, brilliant shining light who was here and then he was gone, but his work will live forever to be interpreted by actors and directors for as long as we’re here.” According to the Post-Gazette , the HBO project is still in the works and is slated to be released by 2020.
