Fans can bid on Johnson now, with all proceeds going to Pencils of Promise. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage Justin Bieber is auctioning off Johnson, the baby boa constrictor he brought to the 2011 Video Music Awards , with all proceeds going to Pencils of Promise, one of the organizations he’s sponsoring through his Believe charity drive . That means one lucky fan has the chance to win a decidedly unique bit of Bieber memorabilia. Bidding is now under way over on the Charity Buzz website (Johnson is currently going for $175, FYI) and closes November 29. Of course, only serious bidders need apply, because if you end up winning the auction, you’ll be on the hook for the long haul, as a disclaimer on the site cautions: “Keeping a pet snake is a long-term responsibility. Before making any decision about keeping one, please ensure you have the money, space, knowledge, time, resources and enthusiasm required to properly care for the species you intend to keep, for the duration of its life.” Enthusiasm is key, since boa constrictors can live 20 years or more in captivity, and, as Charity Buzz states, “the welfare of this snake is the sole responsibility of the adopter … the adopter agrees to give the snake good care, which includes quality premium food, fresh water, sanitation and grooming, clean and secure indoor housing, clean and secure outdoor housing and overall safety.” The winning bidder must also guarantee Johnson’s veterinary care will be provided for. Bieber announced the launch of his Believe charity drive earlier this month, with the release of his Under the Mistletoe. He’s donating a portion of the sales from the holiday disc — which just debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart — to charity and is encouraging fans to match his donations to seven specific organizations: the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pencils of Promise, Musicians on Call, Project Medishare for Haiti, City of Hope, the Boys & Girls Club of America and the Grammy Foundation. Clip was filmed after they performed the holiday track on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Tuesday night. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber in his “Mistletoe” video Photo: Island/Def Jam Justin Bieber has given fans the video for “Mistletoe” and teased his clip for “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” (in photos and in some behind-the-scenes footage , where he dons some funky garb and plays the drums). Now the singer has banked another video off his Under the Mistletoe album. Bieber tweeted that he and Boyz II Men just shot the video for their song “Fa La La.” The news came on the same night that Bieber and the group appeared on “Dancing With the Stars,” where they performed the R&B holiday tune. “Killed it with @BoyzIImen on DWTS and then just shot a video for our song #FALALA with @colintilley – great night! living a dream. Thanku,” he tweeted. The shoot took place after the guys took the stage on the hit ABC show. In a photo posted on Twitter, Bieber, with his new spiky haircut, chills out on a front stoop, while the three guys in Boyz II Men stand around the teen star. Colin Tilley, who has worked with Bieber on videos for “Next 2 You” (with Chris Brown), “Never Let You Go” and “U Smile,” gushed about the shoot. “Just wrapped @justinbieber & @BoyzIIMen video!” he tweeted. “We got some fire! Tiz the season!” Of course, Bieber kicked off the holiday season much earlier than most when he went into the studio earlier this fall to work on the album with folks like Boyz, who described working with the teen star. “He told us his mom didn’t want him to sing ‘I’ll Make Love to You,’ so he’d sneak and go sing it somewhere,” Wanya Morris told MTV News . “It’s also good to know we’ve influenced such a good artist. It’s something that makes us feel we’ve accomplished [something and] we’re doing our job, [that] a guy so young and so into his craft [is] influenced by three guys from Philadelphia that love to sing.” Under the Mistletoe, which dropped this week, features original holiday tunes by Bieber as well as reimaginings of classic tunes like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas.” In addition to Carey, Bieber is joined by Boyz II Men, Usher, Busta Rhymes and the Band Perry on the album. ‘Breaking Dawn’ star scores lead in film adapted from New Yorker article. By Kevin P. Sullivan Taylor Lautner Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic Indie director Gus Van Sant may not have won the directing slot on “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” like Robert Pattinson wanted him to, but the auteur is getting a second chance to work with one of the stars of “Twilight,” Taylor Lautner . According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two are set to make a small-budget film together based on a nonfiction article from the New Yorker, but there aren’t many details about the project other than that. Van Sant and Lautner recently found themselves in the middle of controversy. After photos of the two found their way online, GQ Australia asked Lautner during an interview whether the director and screenwriter Lance Ian Black, who had also been photographed with them, had hit on him. The publication has since apologized for the question, and Lautner explained that there was nothing odd about a writer and director meeting with an actor. Knowledge of this project now sheds more light on those meetings. The role means a change of director for Lautner, whose work outside the “Twilight” series since his rise to stardom has been limited to a small part in the ensemble rom-com “Valentine’s Day” with then-girlfriend Taylor Swift and a disappointing box-office debut as an action star in this past summer’s “Abduction.” That film’s lackluster receipts had critics skeptical as to the future career prospect of the man behind the abs. A role in a film with the Academy-Award nominated director at the helm could spell good things for Lautner in his post-“Twilight” years, especially considering Van Sant’s track record for directing great performances from actors. Be sure to tune in to “MTV First: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which kicks off Thursday, November 3, on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET, followed by a Q&A with Kristen, Rob and Taylor on MTV.com! Industry experts say franchise succeeds by giving moviegoers what they want. By Eric Ditzian Photo: Paramount The “Saw” franchise is no more. The “Scream” series didn’t exactly take off when it was relaunched earlier this year. Recent reboots of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Halloween” and other classics haven’t sustained consistent and lucrative runs at the box office. After its record-setting opening weekend, “Paranormal Activity” now stands as the undisputed horror-franchise champion. The stats for “Paranormal Activity 3″ are staggering. The sequel’s $54 million haul is not only the biggest fall opening ever, but the largest ever for a pure horror movie, according to Box Office Mojo . It averaged an impressive $16,266 per screen, a 29 percent rise over ” PA3 ,” reports Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru , bringing the franchise’s worldwide gross to $450 million “while the combined production costs have amounted to a puny $8 million.” All this box-office growth comes against the backdrop of a Hollywood reality. “Typically, when films reach the threequel stage, momentum wanes,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “What Paramount has done so expertly with this series is stay true to the original grassroots feel of the first. They didn’t try to reinvent the wheel with each successive installment. They didn’t recast, reboot and retool their original formula. The creators of ‘PA’ and the studio know exactly what they have with ‘PA,’ and they are dishing out exactly what fans are craving: cheap thrills.” That “Paranormal” has even reached this point is a feat in and of itself. “The Blair Witch Project,” the found-footage horror flick to which “Paranormal” is always compared, turned from a Sundance sleeper to a $250 million blockbuster in 1999. But a year later, the sequel bombed at the multiplex, grossing just 19 percent of the original. “PA2,” by contrast, opened with $41.5 million a year after the first film caught on with the public, breaking the R-rated midnight record then held by “Watchmen” ($4.6 million). This time around, filmmakers continued to heed the lesson of “Blair Witch”: They didn’t mess with success. “Paramount could have taken the third film and added CGI creatures or something. They didn’t. Fans respond to that,” said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com , adding that “Paranormal” diverges from many other horror franchises in one key way: “Less truly can be more when it comes to this genre. I think a lot of moviegoers are turned off by excessive gore. These films have a very strong understanding of one simple truth about horror: If you allow your audience to use their imagination, it’ll be scarier than anything you can put onscreen. That’s why the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise feels like a breath of fresh air.” There’s a lesson here for other franchises — not just horror ones — a lesson “The Hangover” kept in mind for its $581 million-grossing sequel earlier this year. “Give the audience what they want,” Bock said. “They liked it the first time, so don’t tweak it too much. Advance the story, but don’t reinvent the wheel. Sometimes less is more, and audiences are very peculiar when it comes to big changes in film series that they like. Whether you agree with it or not, the general public wants the same thing, just a little different.” Now we await the inevitable announcement of “Paranormal Activity 4,” wondering if the series can continue to stay true to its storytelling roots while also inventing fresh scares and unexpected ways of capturing the found-footage action. That’s a fine line to keep on walking Halloween after Halloween. “The brilliance of this franchise isn’t just that it’s made on the cheap, but that they slowly and methodically answer questions that explore and expand the mythology of the series,” Bock said. “The fact of the matter is, ‘PA’ will succeed wildly until a new brand of horror show is deemed worthy. The haunting will never end until something else goes bump in the dark and captures audiences’ imagination.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Paranormal Activity 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kathryn Bigelow ‘s upcoming movie about the team of Navy SEAL s who killed Osama bin Laden was originally set to debut right before election day 2012, prompting U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY) to call for an investigation of the extent of the Obama administration’s assistance to the project. Now, that point seems moot; Sony has rejiggered its release schedule so that the Mark Boal-penned picture will debut after the Presidential election, and possibly not until 2013. Then again, with today’s news of Muammar Gaddafi’s death , Obama might not need as much help raising the victory flag, pre-election. [ NYT ]
The album would be called The Man and the Martian, Tip reveals to MTV News’ Sway. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. Photo: Shade 45 Jay-Z and Kanye, Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame: Could T.I. and B.o.B be next? Since Tip’s release from prison in September , the Atlanta rapper has been keeping busy in the studio, churning out collaborations with the Throne , Young Jeezy, 2 Chainz and Big K.R.I.T. But T.I. tells MTV News’ Sway that fans may hear a lot more from him and Bobby Ray. “We been goin’ in. We’re actually flirting with the idea of doin’ an album together called The Man and the Martian, ” T.I. said when he appeared Wednesday on Shade 45’s “Sway in the Morning.” “We just been compiling material, he and I together, and it’s coming out real good.” As far as deciding who is the man and who will play the martian, T.I. left things open. “Well, we interchange,” he explained. “We can do role reversal, we have the morphing ability.” Collaborative rap albums are a definite trend and while T.I. admits that he has been inspired by the Throne, and Em and Royce, he said he has always wanted to do a combo album with another artist. “Of course they did inspire me, but I always have wanted to do a collaborative album. Even back when Jay did that with R. Kelly,” he said. “I spoke to Usher about doing one of those before; the stars and the moon hadn’t aligned appropriately.” T.I. revealed that he first spoke to Usher about doing a joint LP back in 2007 or 2008, and though it didn’t materialize, the MC would still be down to tackle the project. The Grand Hustle CEO was also very clear that none of the aforementioned plans has gotten past the idea stage. “Even this, this is a conversation that we had, this is an idea,” he said about the possibility of a B.o.B record. “It’s not set in stone, it’s not concrete as of yet.” Catch MTV News’ Sway Calloway on “Sway in the Morning,” on SiriusXM Radio’s Shade 45 , Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon ET. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz in final negotiations to pen upcoming flick. By Kara Warner Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” Photo: Paramount Pictures Just about one year ago, Tony Scott sent his “Top Gun” fans into a frenzy over the news that a sequel is not only planned, but Scott will take the directorial reins on the project. There has been little forward movement since then, but now we have word that “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been hired to helm the script. According to Variety, Miller and Stentz are in final negotiations to get to work on the screenplay, with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison signed on to produce. The trade publication claimed that there are no plot details to reveal yet, but we’re hoping the “First Class” writing duo sticks with the outline Scott shared with us last year. “It’s not even a reinvention, it’s not even a sequel. It’s a re-thinking,” Scott said of his plans for the sequel. “What inspired me is that the world today is great, it’s so different from the world we touched originally. It’s really run by guys sitting in Nevada on computers playing war games.” Scott teased that the film will focus on the new generation of fighter pilots. “It’s a mixture of that, and it’s the end of the generation of fighter pilots. Not in a complete end to the generation, because these guys they go up in F-35s and they carry 10 drones with them. [But] it’s a very different movie,” he said. But the most pressing question on everyone’s minds is: Will Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their iconic roles? “I’m gonna withhold that information,” Scott told MTV News. “I can’t say anything. I’m talking with Jerry [Bruckheimer], and I’m going to withhold [those other details].” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
