‘Super 8’ Creature’s ‘Cloverfield’ Connection: J.J. Abrams Explains

Director responds to speculation that there’s a link between the two movies. By Eric Ditzian J.J. Abrams Photo: Megan Jones/ MTV News Talking to J.J. Abrams about “Super 8” these days is a far different experience than it was just a few months ago. During a late April phone conversation, held as the director was putting the finishing touches on his film’s score, Abrams was impressively, impenetrably tight-lipped about the project’s many mysteries. When we asked how far into “Super 8” the much-hyped, never-seen creature would be revealed, he simply answered, “I would say the film will obviously answer that question.” But when Abrams stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Tuesday (June 14), fresh off his film’s impressive, $35.5 million opening weekend , the guy couldn’t have been more open. He answered lingering questions, cleared up sources of debate, and reveled in hearing how fans were taking in a film that is undoubtedly the most personal of his career. Among the most compelling topics we hit on were his revelations about the mysterious creature itself. (Needless to say, there are major spoilers below.) Once the “Super 8” alien could be fully glimpsed as it wreaked havoc in a small Ohio town, some observers noted a similarity between the creature and the alien in 2008’s “Cloverfield,” which Abrams produced. As he explained it to us, there is a link between the two creatures, but not one that has any storytelling impact. “The only connection between the creature in ‘Super 8’ and the creature in ‘Cloverfield’ is that they were both designed by the same guy, Neville Page,” Abrams said. “They actually look very different, but they both have two eyes, a nose and a mouth. So, in that regard, it also looks a lot like Laurence Olivier!” That answer puts to rest any suggestion that “Super 8” and “Cloverfield” exist in the same universe or that the “Super 8” alien’s actions in the 1970s somehow impacted the other alien’s later actions in “Cloverfield.” When we asked Abrams if there were a same-universe connection between the two flicks, he said, “No.” Abrams went on to talk specifically about what they needed their multi-limbed “Super 8” alien to accomplish and why it ended up looking the way it did. “The creature in ‘Super 8’ needed to be scary and it also needed to have the ability to have a performance and be a little bit less scary too,” he explained. “We didn’t want a creature that was just running around thumping his chest and screaming. It needed to be something that was able to have a plan, have an experience. Smart enough to create something, build something. “A lot of what the design was, was how do we do both?” Abrams continued. “If there was a big, strong soldier who had been taken in, was a prisoner of war and had escaped, if this guy was Rambo. Basically this could be someone who for some would be very scary, could be full of rage and also could be emotional and nuanced. So it really was a question of, he wasn’t King Kong and a lot of what we needed to do was find a way to have a design that would give us that latitude to do both — the big scares and also the more subtle stuff.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Super 8.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Nas Gets ‘Nasty’ On New Single

The Good Life single looks back to the early days of hip-hop while staying firmly planted in the present. By Rob Markman Nas Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images There’s no R&B chord, A-list feature or catchy chorus. On “Nasty,” the first single from Nas ‘ 10th solo album, The Good Life, the rapper takes things back to hip-hop basics: hard rhymes over an infectious loop. The song, which leaked online Monday night, is reminiscent of New York’s 1980s infamous park jams and starts out with a DJ asking the rapper’s native Queensbridge housing projects, “Are y’all ready to see Nasty Nas?” The question is, of course, rhetorical. After Nasir pushed rap’s envelope in 2008 on his politically charged Untitled album (originally titled N—er ), fans have clamored for new solo material. Thankfully, “Nasty” lives up to its name, as the track’s opening bars paint a picture of New York’s pre-gentrified crack era: “Late-night candlelight fiend with diesel in his needle/ Queensbridge leader, no equal.” Nas continues to toss numerous nods to the ’80s and ’90s on the Salaam Remi-produced track. There’s a shout to Queens street legend Thomas “Tony Montana” Mickens, the now-closed Tunnel nightclub and the late Notorious B.I.G. Still, “Nasty” isn’t just a trip down memory lane. In fact, Nas remains with his feet firmly planted in 2011 as he reflects on his growth from a wide-eyed boy looking out of his project window to rap’s upper echelon, while still leaving room to grow.”We ain’t going backwards, we’re staying forward though,” Nas said in a June interview with DJ Envy on MTV2’s Sucker Free. With the song’s lyrics, he stays true to that notion. “Silent rage, pristine in my vintage shades/ I’m not in the winters of my life or the beginning stage,” Nas spits before revealing his lustful interest in actress Antonique Smith, who played Faith Evans in the 2009 Biggie biopic “Notorious.” Nas continues to fire off quotables in rapid succession. “I’m so high, I never land like Mike Jackson’s crib” and “Your flow’s cheap as limousine liquor” are just a few examples of Nas’ spirited wordplay. If the new single is any indication of what fans can expect from the new Nas album, then for hip-hop fans, life is good. What do you think of Nas’ latest single? Share your reviews in the comments! 9 Possible ‘Surprise Endings’ for Disney’s Little Mermaid Ride

Disney’s California Adventure amusement park, located right next door to Disneyland, is in the middle of a $1 billion renovation. The first major addition is a new “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure” ride, which opened yesterday with the help of Ariel’s original voice actress Jodi Benson, who performed “Part of Your World” for parkgoers. The ride whisks passengers past scenes from the movie and concludes with an as-yet-undisclosed “surprise ending.” What could that surprise be? We have nine guesses.

Eminem And Royce Da 5’9" Say Bad Meets Evil EP ‘Didn’t Feel Like Work’

‘We didn’t miss a step at all,’ Royce says on ‘RapFix Live’ of reuniting with Em. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Royce Da 5’9″ Photo: MTV News With Detroit rappers Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ back on friendly terms, fans are being rewarded with their forthcoming EP Hell: The Sequel, due in stores June 14. Recording under the moniker Bad Meets Evil, the celebrated lyricists told MTV News’ “RapFix Live” that the fluid back-and-forth on the project’s lead single, “Fast Lane,” was due to their latent chemistry. “Me and Royce, ever since back in the day when we did records together, we always had kind of a chemistry,” Eminem told MTV News. “It was fairly easy to play off what each other was doing, and I think we can [think] a lot alike.” As the “Evil” in the Bad Meets Evil equation, Em added that the project was the result of mending the rift he had with Royce, which dates back to when the latter stopped working with Dr. Dre and was feuding with D12. “This record, the way it came together, it wasn’t anything that we planned to do,” Em said. “We didn’t get together and say, ‘Hey, man, let’s make a Bad Meets Evil record.’ It was more so along the lines of us making amends and repairing our issues that we had, and then one day, Bad [Royce] brought a song to me and wanted me to jump on it, and the way it ended up coming out, it was pretty easy to do. It didn’t take a lot of time. It was fun to do it. The way we knocked that record out kind of quickly … it just morphed into this.” Added Nickel Nine: “It didn’t feel like work. We just had fun doing it.” Some of the previous fruits of Royce and Em’s good times in the studio, such as “Bad Meets Evil” from Em’s The Slim Shady LP, occurred more than a decade ago. But fans need not worry about whether the Motor City tag team will be on the same page musically for the rest of Hell: The Sequel, which features production from DJ Khalil, Bangladesh and Denaun Porter. “It was pretty nostalgic, actually,” Royce said of the recording process. “It took me back to when we used to do stuff back in the day. We clicked like that. I wasn’t really surprised. We didn’t miss a step at all.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Eminem And Royce Da 5’9″ Related Artists Eminem Royce Da 5’9″

Sienna Miller Does the Full Frontal Hippie Hippie Shake [PICS]

The movie isn’t coming to a theater near you anytime soon, but how better to celebrate the majesty of Nature on Earth Day than with a groovy naked chick? Back in 2007, Sienna Miller was set to star in Hippie Hippie Shake , a biopic about controversial Australian publisher Richard Nellville , as Richard’s earth mama girlfriend Louise. The movie contains plenty of nudity from Sienna, like a full frontal skinny dipping scene, seen here in still pictures taken on set. Despite the historically inaccurate landing strip, those who have seen Hippie Hippie Shake say Sienna is the picture of all-natural beauty, not even wearing makeup for most of the film. Too bad it’ll probably never be released. The movie rights to Nelville’s book were first bought in 1998, and after two failed attempts to get the movie off the ground, it was shot in 2007. Sienna’s personal drama with Jude Law delayed the first scheduled release in 2008; then, an announced 2010 release date came and went without the film being shown. Hollywood rumor is that Hippie Hippie Shake is “unreleasable,” and members of the initial creative team are now disassociating themselves with the project, which right now has no scheduled release date. What a buzzkill. You can check out all the breast nudity from Sienna Miller right here on MrSkin.com!
