Peter Facinelli ‘Stoked’ To Nab ‘Idol’ Castoff Paul McDonald For ‘Loosies’

Nikki Reed, Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star and McDonald’s girlfriend, brought the pair together for indie film’s soundtrack. By Kara Warner Peter Facinelli Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images When he hasn’t been busy with the box-office-dominating “Twilight” movies or Showtime’s hit show “Nurse Jackie,” Peter Facinelli has been working on a passion project, “Loosies,” an independent film he wrote, produced and stars in. In addition to enlisting a high-caliber crew of actors for the project, MTV News has exclusively learned that Facinelli has teamed up with a very special musician to contribute music to the film’s soundtrack: recent “American Idol” castoff Paul McDonald . We caught up with Facinelli on Monday (April 18) to get the scoop on his exciting collaboration. “I was telling Nikki [Reed, McDonald’s girlfriend and Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star] I was looking for music for my movie, and she said, ‘You should look through Paul’s stuff,’ ” Facinelli recalled. “She was a big fan of his, I heard, and I thought it really worked for my movie, so I played some tracks over it, where we had temp tracks, and it just all worked. So I reached out to Paul, I sent him the movie, and he enjoyed it a lot, and he said he wanted to be a part of it, which I was stoked.” Facinelli added that McDonald’s original music is really inspirational and fit well with what he was doing on “Loosies.” “He has a band, and his band stuff is very different then what he was doing on ‘American Idol,’ ” Facinelli said. “I heard him on ‘American Idol,’ and I thought he was great, but when I heard the band, it’s very distinct and has a voice of its own, and I like the originality of it,” he explained. “So we’ll probably use most of the music from the two albums he has out now on iTunes,” which were recorded under the band names the Grand Magnolias and High Tide Blues. “Loosies” revolves around a pickpocket in New York, caught up in a fast-paced, hustlin’ lifestyle, until he is confronted by a woman with whom he had a one-night stand and is now pregnant. Facinelli is putting the finishing touches on the film before setting out to find distribution and hopefully a theatrical release. Tyga Visits ‘RapFix Live’ On Wednesday!

Compton-born Young Money MC will join host Sway and take your questions on New West-themed edition of the show on MTV.com. By Alvin Blanco Tyga Photo: Christie Goodwin/ Getty Images Tyga will join us on this Wednesday’s special New West edition of MTV News’ “RapFix Live.” The Young Money rapper will only chat it up with host Sway, but we’ll have an in-depth look at some of the Cali rap acts that are making L.A. a go-to hip-hop destination once again. As always, we’ll also be taking your questions! Last year, the Compton, California, rapper caught an inadvertent hit when his Chris Brown collabo, “Deuces,” from their joint mixtape, Fan of a Fan, burned up the airwaves, landing at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Tyga and Brown went on to earn a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category for the song he co-wrote, and he’s now prepping his forthcoming album, Careless World. Before connecting with the YMCMB, Tyga was already making a name for himself on the L.A. rap circuit. In 2008, he dropped his debut single, “Coconut Juice,” which featured his cousin Travie McCoy. Soon Tyga became acquainted with Lil Wayne — the two appeared together on a remix to Fall Out Boy’s “Arms Race” — and signed on with Young Money a year or so later. Tyga cemented his place in the crew by contributing to Young Money’s hits “BedRock” and “Roger That.” Tyga is hoping to prove his patience will pay off as he’s waited in the wings for fellow YMCMB teammates Drake and Nicki Minaj to launch their careers. The first singles from Careless World, “I’m On It,” featuring Lil Wayne, and “Really Raw,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Pharrell, have heads checking for the project’s release. And earlier this year, Tyga revealed a Drake collaboration will be included on it too. We’ve already spotlighted Nipsey Hussle and Casey Veggies and our New West coverage will continue on “RapFix Live” with closer looks at the movements of Black Hippy (Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and School Boy Q) and Odd Future. Apart from the insight into the diverse underground rap sounds coming out of L.A., we’ll also be examining its party and dance scene . Find out what else is in store from Tyga and the rest of the YMCB crew when he sits down for his interview on the “RapFix” couch. The “Deuces” rapper will be taking questions from the audience via Twitter, @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #rapfixlive. Fans can also upload video questions for Young Money’s next star via Your.MTV.com . Tune in on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, including a special edition of with Cali’s own Tyga on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. We’re bringing you the next wave of hip-hop acts helping restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Keep it locked here for the next week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers! Related Videos Tyga Is Coming To ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Tyga

The Game Talks Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre

R.E.D. Album will drop after Dre finishes Detox, Game tells Mixtape Daily. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Matt Elias The Game Photo: MTV News Compton rapper the Game is still all-red everything, up to his crimson Mohawk. On his latest single, the Cool & Dre-produced “Red Nation,” another rapper with a penchant for the same color, Lil Wayne, performs the chorus. We spoke to the Game on the set of the “Red Nation” video, and he recalled how he got Wayne to appear on the record. “I called Wayne and I was like, ‘Yo I need you to kill this hook,’ ” the Game told Mixtape Daily. “He was like, ‘No problem,’ and he did his thing for me.” The Game usually prefers to record all of his collaborations with guest artists while they’re in the same studio rather than sending music files back and forth via the Internet, but he made an exception for Weezy. “Wayne been on this I Am Still Music tour, man, doing his thing,” the Game explained. “The only exception. That’s like my brother. We from the same side of the rag. So you know what it is, man, we representing. Me and Wayne, we been in the studio vibe before; it just wasn’t on this song.” Weezy previously appeared on the Game’s 2008 album, LAX, performing chorus duties on the introspective “My Life.” The Game’s forthcoming The R.E.D. Album does not yet have a release date. According to the rapper, Dr. Dre’s Detox album is holding up the process. “[The] release date [is] probably late July or early August, man. I’ll let [producer] Jimmy Iovine put that red paint on the calendar and give us a specific date,” the Game said. “All I know is that the album is almost finished. Dre is finishing up Detox and then he going to help me finish up mine. I’m like 90, 95 percent done. Just waiting on Dre to finish his project and then come on over and lend his ear and probably mix a couple of songs, especially the ones that he did, and we’re going to see it in stores.” Dr. Dre famously said, “Look out for detox” on the song “Higher” from the Game’s 2005 debut, The Documentary. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for The R.E.D. Album or Detox. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists The Game Dr. Dre Lil Wayne

Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Musical May Become Feature Film

Reports have Tom Hanks and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black attached to the project. By James Montgomery Billie Joe Armstrong performs with the cast of “American Idiot” Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images It’s been green-lit, killed, resurrected and put on the back burner, but now it appears that the long-in-the-works film version of Green Day’s American Idiot album might finally become a reality. On Wednesday (April 13), Reuters reported that Universal is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights to the Broadway version of “Idiot,” and has hired Michael Mayer &#8212 who directs the stage production &#8212 to shoot the movie version. Reuters also reported that Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning writer of 2008’s “Milk,” is “in discussions” to write the screenplay, and that Tom Hanks will serve as producer on the film, along with Green Day themselves. (Hanks and his business partner Gary Goetzman were producers on the film version of the Broadway smash “Mamma Mia!,” the musical based on the songs of ABBA.) All of that means that, after a voyage that started way back in 2004 &#8212 when Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News that the bandmembers were “talking” to screenwriters about adapting the album for the big screen &#8212 American Idiot could finally find its way to your local multiplex. In 2006, Armstrong promised fans that the film version of Green Day’s hit album would “definitely … happen,” but the band instead turned their attention to creating their next album (2009’s 21st Century Breakdown ) and a stage version of Idiot, which premiered at Berkeley, California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in ’09 before heading to Broadway. Still, they remained adamant that a film would be coming, with Armstrong telling The Associated Press that it would echo the feel of cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Hanks’ reported attachment to the project is also interesting, considering that last year, Green Day dismissed his involvement as “just talk.” A spokesperson for Green Day could not be reached for comment by press time. Meanwhile, the “American Idiot” musical will officially end its Broadway run on April 24, with Armstrong reprising his role of St. Jimmy. Akon Calls Nick Cannon ‘Famous’ Collabo ‘Overdue’

‘He does a lot of family-friendly stuff and I’m trying to go into that realm,’ ‘Kon tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Kelly Marino Akon Photo: MTV News Akon ‘s year in music may seem like it’s off to a slow start, but expect the Senegalese-American artist’s name to be back to music industry ubiquity shortly. MTV News recently caught up with the singer/producer/executive on the set of Nick Cannon’s video for “Famous,” where Akon told us linking up with the actor/rapper (who’s expecting twins with wife Mariah Carey ) was opportune. “I listened to [‘Famous’] and I actually liked it,” Akon said. “He does a lot of family-friendly stuff and I’m trying to go into that realm right now. I want to do a lot more family-friendly stuff, and Nick is the best at that. I feel like this was a collaboration way overdue.” On the set, Akon was friendly as always but didn’t divulge any new details about his upcoming album, Stadium, which he hopes to release in September. Last year, the “Sexy Chick” singer revealed to MTV News that producer David Guetta had contributed to the project. For now, Akon plans to go on mini-tours and release new music just to whet the appetites of his fans. But he still isn’t sure which song he’ll drop first. “I don’t know what to release first,” he said. “I’m so excited about the project itself, I’m like, ‘OK, which record do I want to put out first?’ I haven’t quite decided but by the end of April I’ll know exactly what I’mma do with the record.” ‘Kon was more assured in his reverence for Dr. Dre. Last year’s “Kush,” the official lead single from Dre’s long-awaited Detox album, featured a vocal from Akon. “Dre is one of those guys … he’s a perfectionist in his own [right],” Akon said. “You feel confident working with him because he’s not going to let nothing go undone. In a way, that’s great. But sometimes you’re anxious too, like, ‘Man I can’t wait to let everybody hear this.’ Ultimately, working with Dre was just amazing. Dre is very picky about who he decides to work with too. For him to call me and do [multiple] tracks on the record and be involved in more than one record on that album, it said a lot. It shows how much he really appreciated what I’m doing.” Are you excited to hear new tracks from Akon? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Akon Nick Cannon
