Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns: Kid A, All Grown Up?

Bigger Than the Sound sees parallels between LP’s ambitious new effort and Radiohead’s seminal album, also a departure when released 10 years ago. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda Photo: Flanigan/ FilmMagic According to legend, in August of 2000, a group of clearly terrified Capitol Records executives were outfitted with headphones, loaded into a series of unmarked vans and driven down the Pacific Coast Highway, where they listened to Radiohead’s Kid A for the first time. It was an inspired — not to mention particularly apt — premiere for the album, and though the whole thing is rather apocryphal, it certainly made for nice copy at the time. I only mention that because in August of 2010, a clearly relaxed Warner Bros. publicist sat me down in her office and allowed me one of the first listens to Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns. There were no headphones or unmarked vans or winding, windswept vistas — budgetary cuts, one can only assume — just an iced coffee and a notepad, which was sort of a shame, because if ever there was an album that deserves the Radiohead treatment, it’s this one. Since, as you’ll probably discover in the coming weeks, A Thousand Suns is most definitely Linkin Park’s Kid A. Well, maybe not technically, but, at the very least, spiritually. Like Kid A, Suns is an album of great ambition and equally great scope, a fearless effort that takes the band to places they’ve never been: darker and doomier places, louder and (in sections) heavier places too. Like Kid A, it is so completely different from the band’s previous efforts that it will almost certainly stand as the line of demarcation between everything that came before and everything that will come after. And, much like Kid A, there just aren’t a whole lot of guitars on it. Instead, A Thousand Suns is washed in ominous electronics, jarring percussion and an unshakeable, unyielding post-millennial tension. The latter is nothing new for the band — their 2007 Minutes to Midnight dealt, in parts, with the politics of George W. Bush and the tragedy of Katrina — but here, they’ve steeped the entire album in a thick coat of dread. It’s a transition underscored in the repeated refrain of “God bless us every one/ We’re a broken people living under loaded gun,” first heard in opening number “The Requiem” and then later on in lead single “The Catalyst.” And in moments like the beginning of “When They Come for Me,” when chirping crickets are gradually drowned out by the sound of artillery, or, most notably, in the use of recorded, world-weary speeches by scientist Robert Oppenheimer, political activist Mario Savio and Martin Luther King Jr. Each of the speeches are appropriately monolithic — Oppenheimer’s famous quoting of the Bhagavad Gita after the first testing of the atomic bomb in 1945, Savio’s terrifyingly prescient “bodies upon the gears” screed in 1964, King’s 1967 lament that the horrors of modern life “cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love” — and it’s telling that they all come from the last millennium. Because, really what A Thousand Suns (which takes its name from Oppenheimer’s speech) is trying to say is that none of these problems, these terrors or these specters that haunt us in 2010 are particularly new. Quite the opposite, in fact. We’ve just chosen to ignore the warnings. And now it might be too late. And that’s another reason it reminds me so much of Kid A. But that’s where the similarities between the albums end. Because rather than hide their fears in a claustrophobic din (as Radiohead did), Linkin Park make the conscious decision to rage against them. They’re not willing to go down without a fight, and it’s in those moments — the massive roar of “Waiting for the End,” the thunderous, squealing “Blackout” (Chester Bennington’s best moment on the album) and the muscle-bound might of “Wretches and Kings” — that the album truly soars. And it bears mentioning that for all its mechanized morose, there are some decidedly uplifting moments too. Most notable among them is “Iridescent,” which starts with just a piano line, then slowly heads skyward on interlocking guitars (they do in fact exist on the album) and explodes in a rousing chorus of “Remember all the sadness and frustration/ And let go.” It all ends with an acoustic-based number, “The Messenger,” which features Bennington going full-bore and culminates in this lyric: “When life leaves us blind/ Loves keeps us kind.” And perhaps that’s the real message of the album, that no matter how far gone things may be, humanity isn’t beyond saving. What separates man from machine is our capacity to love, and despite all evidence to the contrary, there are still things worth believing in. All of that may seem crazy, but Linkin Park seem just insane enough to buy into it. And they want you to as well. After all, at this point, it’s about all we have left. So while A Thousand Suns may be dark, sprawling, discordant, ambitious and an all-out game changer, Kid A it’s not. This one’s optimistic. Linkin Park are performing at the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, which will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Kanye West May Be Filming ‘Movie Companion’ To Album

Rapper has been tweeting about shooting in Prague. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/ WireImage Kanye West is in a creative groove right now, finishing his own album, doing a remix for Justin Bieber and announcing plans for a joint LP with Jay-Z . In addition to all his musical ventures, the rapper is working on a “movie companion” to his upcoming album, a source with knowledge of the project told MTV News. Photos from the set appeared on blogs on Wednesday (September 1). The images do not appear to be from any particular scene, though, as West looks to be in between takes from filming; one image shows West walking over to a waiting deer. “On set of the movie,” ‘Ye wrote in a Twitter message last week. “This doe just refuses to sit still. … I told the deer … ‘what would Bambi do?’ & she looked at me like I was crazy.” The rapper has been writing messages via Twitter about his overseas adventures, particularly about details surrounding the shoot. “Last day in Prague,” he wrote late last week. “We’ve shot some good stuff so far … really good … NO! I mean REALLY GOOD! “Just wrapped for the day,” he continued later. “Been shooting 16 hour days. … I’m so excited. … It’s like a child’s delusions become reality!” A representative for West did not respond to a request for comment from MTV News. It’s unclear as of press time which director is attached to the project and whether the film will be bundled with West’s forthcoming album. His last album, 808s & Heartbreaks, featured a Spike Jonze-directed short, “We Were Once a Fairytale,” inspired by the track “See You in My Nightmares” featuring Lil Wayne. The movie was an iTunes only release. Related Photos What Has Kanye West Been Up To This Past Year? The Inspiration For Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Related Artists Kanye West

Chris Brown, Raekwon Recruited For Twista’s Perfect Storm

‘You’re definitely gonna hear the growth and maturity in the music,’ rapper says of album, due in October. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by James Lacsina Twista Photo: MTV News For Twista , it took longer than he thought to go home again. The Chicago MC revisited his debut album three years ago with the release of Adrenaline Rush 2007 , a nod to his first solo effort, Adrenaline Rush. But it wasn’t until that project’s follow-up, last year’s Category F5, that Twista and his first producer, the Legendary Traxster, reunited. Now, the pair are working together once again, joined by the Windy City’s No ID (Jay-Z, Kanye West) for the rapper’s new LP, The Perfect Storm, due in October. “This album is gonna be different, because you’re definitely gonna hear the growth and maturity in the music, that’s one thing for sure,” Twista told MTV News of the project, his eighth overall. “And also, me being able to get back with Traxster, which is the [producer] that did a lot of my original music, like ‘Adrenaline Rush’ and [records] like that, so we bringing that back. And also having jams on there that’s way different, a different style and vibe. Songs like ‘The Heat,’ which was produced by Traxster and No ID. You’ll be able to hear the whole vibe. You’ll hear me tear into it with songs like ‘Three Minute Murder,’ and you gonna hear me on that sexy thing and you gonna hear me do it with that Chi-Town swag.” Twista also recruited Raekwon (“The Heat”) and Chris Brown (“Make a Movie”) for The Perfect Storm. In addition to a new collection of music, Twista plans to include a documentary about his life with the set. According to the fast-rhyming lyricist, the film will be a diary-like take on his journey intertwined with footage of Chicago. “I’m a person that people don’t get to see a lot of, so when you get the documentary, you get to see how I do things, how I am in the studio, my perspective on the city,” Twista explained. “And the reason I turned out the way I did, as far as my lyrics and the way I see things, my outlook on things and just breaking down the city. It’s a piece of Twista. They don’t get to see me on the other side, so it’ll be cool.” Related Artists Twista Chris Brown Raekwon

‘Black August’ Screening Draws Chris Rock, Talib Kweli, More

Veteran journalist Dream Hampton spotlights benefit concert for political prisoners. By Jayson Rodriguez Talib Kweli (file) Photo: Al Pereira/WireImage NEW YORK — Chris Rock, Talib Kweli and Dead Prez’s M-1 were among the attendees of veteran journalist Dream Hampton’s screening Thursday night for her documentary “Black August: A Hip-Hop Benefit Concert.” The event, held at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, showcased the yearly tribute concert that has hosted performers such as Erykah Badu , Mos Def, Common, Dead Prez and David Banner in New York and South Africa. In her film , Hampton features concert footage and interviews with a slew of activists. The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in Brooklyn powers the concerts each year, and in her doc, Hampton seeks to spotlight issues like police brutality and racial injustice. The concert series and the film seek to address awareness about political prisoners, including Mutulu Shakur, the stepfather of late rap star Tupac Shakur. “I think the cause of political prisoners in the hip-hop community wouldn’t be as relevant in the hip-hop community as it is if it wasn’t for [the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement],” Kweli says in the film. “And it certainly has a long way to go from 10 years ago, and I think it’s more relevant. The bridges that we build in South Africa and Cuba are important. Every year, the show is bigger and better and grander.” Hampton, who has written about hip-hop and culture for The Source and Vibe magazines, among other publications, has labored over the project for years and is finally set to release the project by the end of the year. The event was sponsored by ImageNation and hosted by M-1. Are you looking forward to the Black August film? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Talib Kweli

Eminem’s Recovery: What Is The Secret Of Its Success?

Experts point to radio hits and a starved fanbase as the main factors. By Paul Cantor Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem is dominating the charts like it’s 2000 all over again, when his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP, spent eight weeks at the top spot on Billboard ‘s top 200 and went on to sell 9 million copies in the United States alone. His latest LP, Recovery, isn’t as big of a blockbuster just yet, but in the current music-industry climate, it’s killing. The album has spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1, the first hip-hop act to do so since Outkast’s double-LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003/ early 2004. A lot of Eminem’s chart success can be attributed to a very old-school source: radio hits. His first two singles, “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” have been staples on top 40 stations since they dropped. “Radio still makes hits, and hits make artists relevant outside of their core consumer base,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “That’s why you see that aberration in Em’s sales on Recovery vs. Relapse. To a 16-year-old, Eminem was bordering on being their older brother/ sister’s favorite artist, but ‘Love the Way You Lie’ has not only re-excited Em’s existing fans — now mostly in their mid-20s to mid-40s — but reintroduced him to new generation of teenagers for whom Relapse didn’t register.” New York Times music writer Jon Caramanica for thinks Em’s fanbase has also been starved. In a sense, they’ve been waiting for something worth buying from him. “Eminem has been around for long enough to develop different pockets of fans: total loyalists, casual listeners, people who like only specific songs or sorts of songs,” he explained. “That he’s continuing to sell week after week is reflective of the fact that all of these groups don’t get activated at the same time. There are still people out there who might buy an Eminem album but haven’t, and each week, it seems, a few more do.” But can Em’s reign at the top continue? “I believe Em has a couple more weeks on top of the charts, even if he gets knocked out of #1 a few times before October 1st,” Vibe Editorial Director Datwon Thomas said. “He has two mega-concerts where he’s headlining a hometown show with Jay-Z in Detroit and then opening for Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium in New York. The amount of media and fan fervor for these events alone will spur people to grab both artists’ albums from their respective catalogs. [And] if Em can build on that momentum and release another smash of a hit from this album, he’ll be OK well into the holiday season.” Working his album through Christmas seems like it might be an option, if only because his record label, Aftermath/Interscope, appears committed to going the whole 12 rounds with Recovery. “Nowadays, [labels] push [albums] until the first-week sales and then generally abandon ship,” Callahan-Bever said. “With Recovery, it’s clear that Interscope knew they had a record with legs and went out of their way to push it. ‘Love the Way You Lie’ just connects to people in that really special, emotive way that only one or two pop songs a year do, and that is just undeniable.” Will Eminem rule the charts until Christmas? Tyga, who’s performing shows in South Africa this week, just dropped a video for his Lil Wayne-featured “I’m On It,” and of course, his Chris Brown collaboration “Deuces” is an undeniable people-propelled hit. The record was a mixtape song, but through requests and video play on MTV Jams and “106 & Park,” it’s become a number-one hit. Young Money president Mack Maine says that Tyga has an official second single coming soon and is hoping the company releases his album before 2010 is over. If not, look for Tyga at the top of 2011. Bloomberg: ‘100 Percent’ of 9/11 Families Support Ground Zero Mosque

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c Michael Bloomberg www.thedailyshow.com Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg might consider checking out the polls. He’s under the impression 100 percent of 9/11 families support building the Ground Zero Mosque at the current planned location. “The family members, they do care,” Bloomberg told “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart Aug. 26. “And the family members that I’ve talked to – and I’m chairman of the board of the World Trade Center Memorial – 100 percent in favor of saying, ‘These people, if they want to build a mosque, can build a mosque. The lives of our loved ones were taken because the right to build a mosque or say what you want to say was so threatening to people.'” Even Stewart, who takes Bloomberg’s side in supporting the mosque and has mocked opponents in several episodes of the hit comedy news program, couldn’t let Bloomberg’s exaggeration go unchecked. “I think the difficulty always is, unfortunately, I’m sure there are veterans who fought over there who feel we shouldn’t,” Stewart said. “I’m sure there are family members, maybe you haven’t heard of them, who feel we shouldn’t.” In fact there are many 9/11 family members speaking out against building a mosque so close to Ground Zero, including Neda Bolourchi, a Muslim woman whose mother died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Bolourchi is one of the numerous Muslim voices opposing the mosque, a demographic the media are mostly ignoring . The group Keep America Safe featured six more family members in a  video opposing  building the mosque near Ground Zero.  Others  have also spoken out. Bloomberg said opposition to the mosque is based on politics, and suggested most opponents don’t actually care about the issue. “There’s nothing new here,” he said, referring to the fact the project has been in the works for over a year. “The difference is we’re in an election season and this whole issue, I think, will go away right after the next election. This is, plain and simple, people trying to stir up things to get publicity and trying to polarize people so that they can get some votes, and I don’t think that most of the people who are yelling and screaming really care one way or another.” A recent  CBS News poll  found that 71 percent of respondents believe it is “not appropriate” to build the mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero, including a majority (57 percent) of Democrats. A  Time poll  found that 68 percent are following the issue “somewhat closely” or “very closely.”
