Movieline Has the Final Word on Conangate — and the First Interview with the Author

Back in February, Viking confirmed that Bill Carter, the bestselling author of the Late Shift had flown to Los Angeles to begin research on a new book chronicling the latest late night shakedown at NBC. Proof of the project arrived earlier this week online via cover art for The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy (pictured right) and a September release date. Anxious to hear more about the surefire bestseller, Movieline phoned Carter earlier this week to discuss the impending release date and whether Jay Leno is really as cold and calculating as Conan fans make him out to be.

Daniel Radcliffe Gives Roller-Coaster Tips At ‘Harry Potter’ Theme Park

Actor names Dragon Challenge as his favorite ride in Universal’s Wizarding World. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on Wednesday Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images Daniel Radcliffe plays the world’s most favorite wizard in the “Harry Potter” movies, but that doesn’t mean he can’t find magic in the real world. At Universal Orlando’s grand opening celebration for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the actor was particularly excited about the park’s signature roller coaster. “The Dragon Challenge roller coaster is a real standout for me,” he told MTV News of the coaster, which is actually a made-over version of an existing ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Radcliffe outlined his very specific procedure for riding roller coasters: “Make sure that [the harness is] really tight; you have to try to keep your eyes open and try to come out with the longest prolonged scream, and if all your hair hasn’t gone on one side of your head at the end, you haven’t done it right.” While Radcliffe was entranced by the Dragon Challenge, he was also impressed by the mind-boggling attention to detail of several parts of the Wizarding World. “Me and Rupert [Grint] stood outside Ollivander’s Wand Shop for five minutes this morning thinking we couldn’t go in. We were just impressed by the outside,” he said. But Radcliffe wasn’t as freaked out as he’d have thought about being so immersed in Harry Potter’s world but not on a movie set. “You know what, it’s not even odd. I suppose there was an element of it being odd this morning when I was walking around … [but] it’s amazing. It’s actually fantastic. “When we heard they were doing a ‘Harry Potter’ theme park, it’s one of those things where you think that can go either way,” he added. “In the wrong hands, that would not have been impressive, but these guys have just done the most bang-up, amazing job. The care and love that has gone into this park is equal to what we put into the films, and that’s what makes this very special and authentic.” What other movie or book franchise would you want to see turned into a theme park? Drake: So Far Gone Was A ‘Teaser’ For Thank Me Later

‘I feel like it ended off on a note that just need to be continued,’ Drake tells MTV News of his breakout mixtape. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Drake’s Thank Me Later finally arrived this week, but rather than standing as a triumphant announcement of the Toronto rapper’s coronation, the collection has turned out be more of a continuation of the narrative started on his previous effort, the highly influential mixtape So Far Gone. The two projects bookmark 23-year-old Drake’s journey into adulthood and the various pitfalls and paranoia that dot his life between successes. He admits it was a conscious decision to pick up on his debut where he left off on his breakout tape. “This album, I definitely wanted it to be consistent with that sound, because I felt like So Far Gone — the story and the sound — it was like a teaser of a story that I wanted to tell and I feel like it ended off on a note that just need to be continued,” Drake told MTV News. “I didn’t want to just make this first album and completely forget about every thing I had just rapped about and start from a new perspective. I really wanted to continue the story. And that’s why I continue with three songs that almost could have been on So Far Gone, which is ‘Fireworks,’ ‘Karaoke,’ and ‘The Resistance.’ “Then life changes and things change,” he continued. “And you go into ‘Over’ and you start hearing ‘Show Me a Good Time,’ ‘Fancy,’ and it just gets bigger and sonically you hear Kanye West and Swizz Beatz and it’s like, ‘Oh, what’s happening?’ And then there’s still little So Far Gone moments in there, like the end of ‘Fancy’ — the beat switches. Then ‘Light Up’ is a real hip-hop moment, and I end with a song called ‘Thank Me Now.’ Even though it’s happy, it’s still me rapping and I’m letting you know the story shall continue.” Earlier this year, Drake revealed he was learning more about himself through his music. The “Find Your Love” star said putting this project together helped him get a firm grasp on his story and who he is — something he still wrestles with at times. “I’m learning about myself. That’s what my music is about,” he told MTV News in January. “I don’t necessarily know all the time who Drake is. I take it day by day and learn as much as I can about myself. As I learn, I choose to share with my fans. I’m just an artist that isn’t scared of being open. My journey, as far as growing into a man, is shared with the people,” he added. “My whole life is like that. I grew up on TV; I’ve always become accustomed to sharing my life with the world. At least now I get to do it in my own words … so I’m not a character. I have a little more grasp on who I am. I’m more eager to share it now: me growing into an artist is me growing into a man.” How would you compare Drake’s debut with his mixtape? Was he more introspective on the tape? Tell us your thoughts in the comments. Don’t miss the “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary , airing Wednesday, June 23, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! 50 Cent And Floyd Mayweather Talk New Albums, Fake Rappers

Fif tells Mixtape Daily that he might scrap his Black Magic album for a new concept. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Tim Kash 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive For the original concept of his Black Magic album , 50 Cent said he was inspired by dance music while touring overseas. Now that he’s in the U.S., on the Invitation Tour , the G-Unit team captain said he has a whole other muse for a completely different album. “I started working on it,” 50 said last week in Los Angeles. “I been working on writing to a concept for Black Magic. … I recorded 19 songs. Then when I got back to the U.S., I started writing to a different concept. I spoke to Em. He called me when I was starting in Detroit.” Before Fif could go more in-depth about his upcoming album, his friend, Floyd Mayweather — who sat in on the interview as well — announced he has an LP as well. “We’re doing a compilation album,” Money Mayweather said. The boxing champ said he’ll be highlighting various artists on the project. “We’ll probably launch it in the heat of the next bout,” Fif said. “It’ll probably be the biggest fight in the history of the sport.” Of course, 50 was referring to the long-delayed Mayweather/ Manny Pacquiao title bout. Floyd wants Pacquiao to take Olympic-style drug testing, and Manny has resisted thus far. Back to the music: Fif and Mayweather agree that a lot of the hip-hop out right now has taken a softer turn. “It’ll just make room for you to impact when [the hardcore] comes back,” 50 assessed. “No one told the world to enjoy that [softer] music temporarily. I think a big portion of why people didn’t want to hear the aggressive content is because the people conveying them were lying.” “You got rappers in today’s time, they get a small advance from their record label, get a bunch of tattoos, a few piercings on their face, go to jail for 10 or 20 days, [then] they killers,” Mayweather weighed in. “Next time out, they rock stars. I think rap is crazy, but it’s still very creative.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

How do you cast those roles convincingly? With two actors famous for being blond, of course! Jason Isaacs (who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series) and Maria Bello have come aboard the project as Lautner’s fake family, and for an entire first act, he will pretend not to notice that their tans are nowhere near as good as his. Somewhere, Jennifer Lopez is crying, for the assimilatory torch has been passed. [ Deadline ]

Hot New Trend: Old Fashioned Incandescent Lightbulbs

Image credit: Grassrootsmodern What’s hot in restaurant design these days? Retro light bulbs, of the old, carbon-filament power-sucking kind. And the warmer the light, the less efficient they are, some running under 2 lumens per watt. (a fluorescent bulb runs at 80 lumens per watt). The New York Times covers the trend, interviewing a designer:… Read the full story on TreeHugger

5 Subpar Directors Who Will Provoke Peter Jackson Into Making The Hobbit Himself

These days, it seems like everyone wants to direct The Hobbit except for Peter Jackson. After Guillermo del Toro left the project, it appeared that Jackson would be a natural fit to take the reins back to his Lord of the Rings franchise, but his reported reluctance has opened the door for unlikely contenders like David Dobkin ( Wedding Crashers ) and Brett Ratner ( X-Men: The Last Stand ). We’re on to this game that the suits from MGM and WB seem to be playing: flirt with completely inappropriate directors who aren’t right for the franchise in the hopes that they’ll bait Jackson into directing the film himself! Here are five more candidates for the job who ought to be leaked to the press immediately:

Microsoft Kinect Unveiled At E3

The platform formerly known as Project Natal makes its debut. By Russ Frushtick Microsoft Kinect unveiled at E3 2010 Photo: Russ Frushtick/ MTV News Microsoft kicked off E3 2010 with the long-awaited unveiling of its motion-sensing gaming platform. The company offered an early glimpse of the technology last year, when it went by the temporary moniker Project Natal. But on Sunday night Microsoft debuted a much more complete, full-featured array of games and gave the platform a new name: Kinect (a blending of “kinetic energy” and “connect”). Demonstrated during a lavish performance by Cirque De Soleil, the Kinect presentation featured families jumping, twisting and flailing in front of a TV to complete objectives in a variety of games. The technology behind Kinect rests in a new 3D-sensing camera, which sits below the user’s TV and can accurately capture the movements of anyone who stands before it. The games that were demonstrated — which included a “Star Wars”-themed title that allows players to engage in light saber duels — proved that Microsoft isn’t just aiming for children with this new innovation. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the Kinect titles: “Joy Ride” Initially just an Xbox Live driving game, this game was been redesigned to support Kinect. Players can steer their chosen car simply by holding their arms out in front of them and turning an invisible steering wheel. “Track & Field” A collection of team-based minigames ranging from the 100-meter dash to the javelin toss to, oddly enough, bowling. It seems to be Microsoft’s answer to Nintendo’s popular “Wii Sports” series. “Yoga” Another nod to Nintendo’s past successes, this yoga game features a digital tutor who can walk players through complex positions. An on-screen representation of your character tracks every movement to ensure accuracy. “Dancing” A rhythm-inspired game that allows players to learn choreographed dances step by step. The game checks the accuracy of your moves and will even slow down the pace if you’re too far off. “Natal Animals” Users can purchase stuffed animal creatures that, when held up to the Kinect camera, become in-game characters that can be played with. Users can even teach the animals tricks such as how to jump and how to play dead. “Star Wars” The biggest response came from the appearance of a “Star Wars”-themed game, which allows players to wield a light saber and take on the Empire. The on-screen Jedi follows the players’ every movement, allowing for graceful ricochets and powerful explosions. Unfortunately the demonstration didn’t feature any hands-on time with the games, but MTV News will get to try out many of the above titles on Monday evening. Check out MTV Multiplayer for our latest impressions of the Kinect.
