‘Nanny McPhee Returns’ Star Used Snail Mail To Woo A-Listers

‘I always send the script with a nice letter,’ Emma Thompson says of casting Ralph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News Despite her less than comely appearance, the magic-wielding Nanny McPhee delighted audiences enough in 2005 for her to make a second trip to theaters in this week’s “Nanny McPhee Returns.” When MTV News caught up with the film’s star and screenwriter, Emma Thompson, she told us that taking on dual roles is “hugely satisfying.” She also had no complaints about the hours spent in the makeup chair, calling them a reward for having spent a “few years writing the story.” The story is kid-centric and full of fantasy-like surprises — piglets that perform a synchronized swimming routine in a pond, a baby elephant and goat that spend a night in children’s beds — and boasts appearances by esteemed actors Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. When we asked Thompson how she managed to snag the two busy men for the film, the Oscar-winner said it all came down to a simple exchange of favors. “Well, you know, just one or two quite simple sexual favors, and that was it,” Thompson joked. “Not much [effort was required], really. Not bad, they were very generous,” she laughed, adding, “I should be so lucky, quite frankly.” The real story is that Thompson used good old-fashioned snail mail. “I always send the script with a nice letter, ‘Look, you know, if you fancy it, would you?’ And they both said yes immediately,” Thompson explained. “I’m very grateful to them because they’re both wonderful.” Thompson also dished about how both she and Fiennes had appeared in at least one “Harry Potter” film , a feat that seemed to have been accomplished by every working actor in the U.K. Thompson plays kooky sometimes-psychic Professor Trelawney. “Absolutely everyone in equity has been in it,” she joked of the franchise’s lengthy cast list. “Including all my family, practically, my sister just finished. I don’t know what the name of her character is; she’s got a major role in this last one.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee Returns.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Eve’s Shitty See Through of the Day

This is supposed to be pictures of Eve. She is the ghetto rapper bitch with paw tattoos on her tits, a tattoo that inspired so many strippers to follow her lead, because like any great ad exec will tell you, the paw print on the tit represents animal instinct of wanting to put your paws all up and down her tits, it’s on some deep psychological level, even if the tits aren’t substantial, it’s like some kind of McDonald’s ad that makes me want to have a Big Mac, only instead of Big Macs, it’s rapper tit….and unfortunately this see thru is so shitty you can’t even see the tattoos that paved the way for some many gutter whores dancing on poles…you can’t see nipple…all you can really see is bra strap and there’s nothing hot about that…unless of course you have an Eve fetish, in which case, you may want to have that shit looked at, cuz that’s just not normal.

Why Atheists Are More Intelligent than the Religious

Humans are designed by evolution to believe in God Published on April 11, 2010 It is natural to believe in God, so more intelligent individuals are more likely to be atheists. Religion is a cultural universal, and its practice is observed in every known human society. However, as I explain in earlier posts (Why do we believe in God? Part I, Part II), recent evolutionary psychological theories suggest that religiosity may not be an adaptation in itself but may be a byproduct of other evolved psychological mechanisms variously called the “animistic bias” or the “agency-detector mechanisms.” These theories contend that the human brain has been selected to overinfer agency – personal, animate, and intentional forces – behind otherwise natural phenomena whose exact causes cannot be known. This is because overinferring agency – and making a Type I error of false positive – makes you a bit paranoid, but being paranoid is often conducive to survival. In contrast, underinferring agency – and making a Type II error of false negative – can result in being killed and maimed by predators and enemies that were incorrectly assumed not to exist. So, evolutionarily speaking, it’s good to be a bit paranoid, because being paranoid can often save your life. Religiosity – belief in higher powers – may be a byproduct of such overinference of agency and intentional forces behind natural phenomena. If these theories are correct, then it means that religiosity – belief in higher powers – may have an evolutionary origin. It is evolutionarily familiar and natural to believe in God, and evolutionarily novel not to be religious. Consistent with this reasoning, out of more than 1,500 distinct cultures throughout the world documented in The Encyclopedia of World Cultures, only 19 contain any reference to atheism. Not only do these 19 cultures exist far outside of our ancestral home in the African savanna, but all 19 of them without an exception are former Communist societies. There are no non-former-Communist cultures described in The Encyclopedia as containing any significant segment of atheists. Nor is there any reference to any individuals who do not subscribe to the local religion in any of the ethnographies of traditional societies. It may therefore be reasonable to conclude that atheism may not be part of the universal human nature, and widespread practice of atheism may have been a recent product of Communism in the 20th century. So belief in higher powers is evolutionarily familiar and natural, and atheism is evolutionarily novel. The Hypothesis would therefore predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to be atheist than less intelligent individuals. Once again, analyses of large representative samples from both the United States and the United Kingdom support this prediction of the Hypothesis. Net of a large number of social and demographic factors, including education, more intelligent individuals are more likely to be atheistic than less intelligent individuals. For example, among the American sample, those who identify themselves as “not at all religious” in early adulthood have a mean childhood IQ of 103.09, whereas those who identify themselves as “very religious” in early adulthood have a mean childhood IQ of 97.14. Even though past studies have shown that women are more religious than men, the analyses show that the effect of childhood intelligence on adult religiosity is twice as large as that of sex. Remarkably, childhood intelligence has a significant and large effect on adult religiosity even when religion itself is statistically controlled for. So it appears that more intelligent children are more likely to grow up to be atheists than less intelligent individuals, and the Hypothesis provides one explanation as to why. added by: putdownmypants

Free Lindsay: Lohan Likely to Leave Rehab Early!

So much for 90 days in jail and 90 more in rehab. Try about 15 per. Friday, we reported on the very real possibility that a troubled Lindsay Lohan would be released from rehab at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital on the early side. Now it looks like it’s actually going down that way, as early as this week, according to sources close to the situation. She may be a free woman by the weekend! Lindsay’s doctors have not written a final report, but have (apparently) concluded the actress’ psychiatric problems are not nearly as severe as first thought. There were indications Lindsay was bipolar but that proved not to be the case. Additionally, her drug addiction issues are not as severe as initially believed. The powers that be apparently think Lindsay Lohan is better already . Lohan’s issues with Adderall are well documented, but the doctors reportedly don’t think it requires more inpatient care – outpatient care may begin soon. The new judge in the case must approve any early release, of course, and you can bet that Linds’ lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, will request that shortly. After all, Lindsay’s an inspiration in there. If medical professionals think releasing her is a good idea, the judge will almost certainly go along with it. But would more rehab do her additional good? We understand she causes a circus for UCLA, but we think she’s a troubled individual who can’t handle life on her own, and releasing her into the care of enablers like that wretch Dina Lohan will only make things worse. But that’s just us. Tell us what you think: Should L-squared be released so soon?

Eat Pray Love: A Life Lesson on Happiness

Image credit: François Duhamel, Columbia Pictures After devouring author Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, Eat Pray Love , I was psyched to see it live on the big screen. I fell in love with Gilbert’s post-divorce life story, and her thirst for self-discovery that hurtled her to far-reaching points of the globe in search of awakening her hunger for life (in Italy), her spirit (in India) and trust of love (in Bali). So what does this “chick flick” have to do with the green movement? For me, everything. The film explores the idea that genuine

More on How Physicians Became Torture Doctors for CIA – Kevin Gosztola – Open Salon

A good amount of documentation on the involvement of psychologists in the torture and abuse of detainees or “terror suspects.” And, a new study( http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0805/study-cia-doctors-gave-green-light-torture/ ) provides even more revelations on the involvement of physicians making it increasingly clear that medical professionals put limits on ethical standards they were expected to follow in order to help the CIA interrogate detainees. The study, titled “Roles of CIA Physicians in Enhanced Interrogation and Torture of Detainees,( http://www.wepapers.com/Papers/117511/Roles_of_CIA_Physicians_in_Enhanced_Interr… )” authored by Leonard S. Rubinstein, the president of Physicians for Human Rights, and Brigadier General (ret.) Stephen N. Xenakis, a former Army psychiatrists (who is now with the Center for Public Health and Human Rights), utilizes a previously secret document from 2004 and lays out the “guidelines for detainee interrogation” that physicians, psychologists, and other health care professionals developed and followed so they could serve the CIA. Guidelines indicate the doctors, who were working for the CIA’s Office of Medical Services, conducted medical evaluations [experimentations] on detainees “before and during interrogations” and waterboarding “required the presence of a physician.” Physicians documented the effects of “enhanced interrogation techniques” [torture] like waterboarding and decided waterboarding “created risks of drowning, hypothermia, aspiration pneumonia, or laryngospasm.” They ignored “clinical experience/research” and assured lawyers “there was no ‘medical reason’ to believe that waterboarding [would] lead to physical pain.” It was established that “cramped confinement could result in deep vein thrombosis” and death could result from “lengthy exposure to cold water.” And, the physicians, psychologists, and other health care professionals working for the CIA developed “limitations” so that techniques like waterboarding, cramped confinement, sensory deprivation, stress positions, etc could be used on detainees. Limitations included: “exposure to specified temperature either up to time of hypothermia would develop or on evidence of hypothermia,” dietary restrictions up to “body weight loss of 10% or evidence of significant malnutrition,” “exposure to noise just under decibel levels associated with hearing loss,” up to 48 hours of exposure to stress positions “provided hands were no higher than the head” of a detainee, and no more than eight consecutive hours or eighteen hours per day of “confinement in a box.” Much of this took place after 2003, after a CIA Inspector General investigation of “enhanced interrogation techniques” [torture], OMS physicians were asked to provide “opinions to the agency and lawyers on whether techniques used would be expected to cause severe pain or suffering and thus constitute torture.” Slowly, OMS physicians’ work for the CIA transformed into work, which violated “ethical standards,” prohibiting physicians from using “medical skills to facilitate torture or be present when torture is taking place.” The physicians consulted directly with Department of Justice lawyers and were asked to provide legal cover by supporting “legal decisions” that “interrogators who applied enhanced interrogation techniques neither inflicted sever mental or physical pain or anguish and thus did not commit torture.” For techniques like sleep deprivation, they claimed the use thereof “could not lead to profound disruption in the detainees’ senses or personality (the legal definition of psychological torture).” As suggested in the opening paragraph, it has been evident that physicians and psychologists have been involved in torture for some time, especially since Wikileaks leaked the Guantanamo Standard Operating Procedures Manual in November 2007( http://www.wikileaks.org/wiki/Guantanamo_document_confirms_psychological_torture ). The manual indicated that, “incoming prisoners were to be held in near-isolation for the first [four] weeks to foster dependence on interrogators and `enhance and exploit the disorientation and disorganization felt by a newly arrived detainee in the interrogation process.’” It outlines how isolation was to be used on detainees, a technique Physicians for Human Rights said can lead to symptoms of “`bewilderment, anxiety, frustration, dejection, boredom, obsessive thoughts or ruminations, depression, and, in some cases, hallucination'” and, if prolonged, could result in “increased stress, abnormal neuroendocrine function, changes in blood pressure and inflammatory stress responses.” Then, it was known those involved understood how they could be prosecuted for violating international law. As an April 16, 2003, memo from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld explained “Caution: the use of isolation as an interrogation technique requires detailed implementation instructions, including specific guidelines regarding the length of isolation, medical and psychological review, and approvals for extension of the length of by the appropriate level in the chain of command. This technique is not know to have been generally used for interrogation purposes for longer than 30 days. Those nations that believe that detainees are subject to POW protections may view use of this technique as inconsistent with the requirements of Geneva III, Article 13 which provides that POWs must be protected against acts of intimidation; Article 14 which provides that POWs are entitled to respect for their person; Article 34 which prohibits coercion and Article 126 which ensures access and basic standards of treatment. Although the provisions of Geneva are not applicable to the interrogation of unlawful combatants, consideration should be given to these views prior to application of this technique.” The report is yet another indication of the need for more investigation, accountability, and reform from the Obama Administration. Yet, as demonstrated by a comprehensive report (“Establishing the New Normal”)( http://www.aclu.org/national-security/establishing-new-normal ) from the ACLU, the Obama Administration has avoided its obligation to accountability for torture and chosen to follow the dangerous mantra of “looking forward, not back,” a false choice because, as the ACLU states in the report: “a strong democracy rests not on the goodwill of its leaders but on the impartial enforcement of laws. Sanctioning impunity for government officials who authorized torture sends a problematic message to the world, invites abuses by future administrations, and further undermines the rule of law that is the basis of any democracy.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Shelly Thompson Dares to Hassle the Hoff

A woman claiming to be David Hasselhoff’s girlfriend says she plans to sue the star for domestic abuse, even though he claims they’ve never even met. These things happen when you are an international sex symbol and revered for your role in the epic, long-running television drama known as Baywatch. Shelly Thompson, who also goes by Shane Starlet, is alleging she was physically hassled by the Hoff and has engaged a high-profile Hollywood lawyer. If Thompson is to be believed (a big if) her story is no joke. She says she began living with Hasselhoff in 2007 until their relationship came to an end this July, when he threw her out of his car onto the street. “My mother and I were on our way down to San Diego with David for his Comic Con appearance,” Thompson recalled . “He was drunk, we got into an argument and he pulled over on the side of the road and told us to, ‘Get the f*%k out!’” Who does he think he is, Mel Gibson ? No photo evidence of Thompson and Hasselhoff together is know to exist, despite her claims that she and Hasselhoff – who is famously battling alcohol and other problems – dated for nearly three years. Quite fishy, no? Another hole? Thompson claims the incident occurred on July 24. There are photos of Hasselhoff at a Comic Con event in San Diego with his daughter on July 22 – two days before Thompson says she went to the event with him. Hasselhoff’s legal team says this reeks of a shakedown, claiming “he has never met” Shelly Thompson, “doesn’t know anyone by that name” and the whole story “is absolutely not true.” The accuser says it is true, and there are witnesses. We’ll see.
