Dave Matthews Band Caravan Pulls Into Atlantic City

First of four three-day festivals also features the Flaming Lips. By Mary J. DiMeglio Dave Matthews performs at the Caravan festival in Atlantic City on June 24, 2011 Photo: Getty Images ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — For the first stop on its traveling roadshow, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan brought a rootsy collection of friends to dusty Bader Field on Friday. And even after a career-spanning set that included “Don’t Drink the Water,” “Satellite” and “Why I Am,” DMB still have plenty of hits to draw from for the next two headlining performances of their inaugural three-day festival. Matthews gave nods to almost all of the day’s supporting acts, mentioning Delta Spirit, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Head & The Heart, and saying, “It was a pleasure to share the stage with Ray Lamontagne.” David Ryan Harris, who played Friday afternoon, joined the band for perennial crowd favorite “Jimi Thing” from their 1994 debut, Under the Table and Dreaming. Grammy-winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin proved his chops early, tearing into “You Might Die Trying.” Coffin has played with DMB since LeRoi Moore’s 2008 ATV accident and death. His Mu’tet ensemble was one of the first acts of the day. Also pulling double duty was guitarist Tim Reynolds, first appearing in the afternoon with TR3. Reynolds will also join Matthews for an acoustic set Saturday afternoon (June 25). A memorable aspect of any DMB show is the quirky frontman’s non sequiturs, and Friday night was no exception. Matthews shared these gems: “Facial hair is so transformative” and “Too much morphine will make you constipated,” after debuting a version of “Buena” by ’90s alt-rockers Morphine. Matthews unleashed his impressive wail on “Grey Street,” and the show took a romantic turn when the band followed “Crash” with “You and Me” and “Shake Me Like A Monkey.” Returning from a break, Matthews warned, “I think we might f— it up, but we’re gonna try anyway,” before his acoustic adaptation of Procol Harum’s 1967 classic “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” Another cover closed out the set, as the band stunned the audience by playing Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” for the first time ever in concert. Though not exactly channeling Robert Plant, Matthews did sound oddly unlike himself on the vocals, in a rendition highlighted by a deft guitar solo. And though, rather than returning for a second encore, the band ended 30 minutes shy of their scheduled 11 p.m. ending time, most in the audience, anticipating another two long days capped by three-hour DMB sets, seemed relieved to be shuffling off the grounds. Previously that evening, the Flaming Lips proved it’s never too early for them to bring the weird. Flanked by sunglass-wearing, bopping Dorothys, Scarecrows, Tin Men and Cowardly Lions, they shared their ultra-psychedelic take on Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon , playing the album in its entirety, interspersed with choice selections from “The Wizard of Oz.” Those looking for something lighter found instrumental jam band Lotus keeping it groovy as the sun set. An ocean breeze brought welcome relief from the hot and humid day as seagulls cruised overhead. O.A.R., Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Thievery Corporation join the caravan Saturday, while Sunday’s festivities will feature David Gray, Dr. Dog, Bassnectar and Michael Franti with Spearhead. The party travels to Chicago in July, returns to the East Coast in August for a weekend at New York’s Governors Island and wraps up at The Gorge in Washington in early September. Lawyer for Alleged Tupac Shooting Mastermind Denies All Charges

Dexter Isaac made a major admission yesterday: referring to an incident in Manhattan in 1994, the inmate said he was hired to rob Tupac Shakur . Currently serving a life sentence for murder, Isaac also claimed music executive James Rosemond paid him $2,500 to carry out the deed. Now, Rosemond’s attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, is speaking out against the charges. “How anyone can take this animal’s word as true without any corroboration at all is frankly beyond me,” he told E! News. “[Isaac] is a guy who is a convicted psychotic killer, who is currently serving a life sentence without parole.” Lichtman says Isaac is conjuring up these allegations in a “desperate attempt to get out from under his sentence.” Tupac would have turned 40 years old today. It somehow seems apt that more controversy surrounding his life would come up on his birthday. [Photo: WENN.com]

Amber is still in the hospital. Keep her in your thoughts. It’s unclear why Portwood was in shambles, but she and baby daddy Gary Shirley had actually been on relatively good terms in the last couple of months. It’s also unclear if this will affect season three of Teen Mom , which is set to begin next month and reunites Portwood with the rest of the original cast. More details to follow as the story develops … UPDATE : A police statement confirms that at 11:34 a.m. Anderson Police were called to a residence in the 1300 block of Pleasant Meadow Drive. According to the caller, Amber was threatening to end her life. She did not appear injured, and was transported to a medical facility for evaluation. An Anderson police source also confirms that the phone call was not made by Amber Portwood at her home, but by “a relative” at a different location. The relative advised the authorities to check on Amber. A source says Gary Shirley’s mother was the one who made the phone call to the police. An inside source reports the following: “Two policemen arrived, found her face-up on the couch and immediately called for an ambulance. When two EMT workers arrived, they removed the rope that Amber had loosely knotted around her neck.” “They tried speaking with her, but she was in and out of consciousness and couldn’t respond; she was just moaning. They gave her an oxygen mask, put her on a gurney, and rushed her to the hospital.” Amber is currently still being evaluated in St. Johns Hospital. [Photo: Fame Pictures]

LeBron James Clarifies Postgame Remarks, Sounds Less Like a Jerk

LeBron James was in for a long postseason before he stepped to the microphone for a postgame press conference, following his team’s NBA Finals elimination at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks Sunday night. The supposedly best player in basketball had been reduced to a passive spectator during the series, averaging nine points fewer per game than he did during the regular season. Asked about the celebratory reaction of his critics to such poor play, James gave an answer that sounded like he was looking down on all basketball fans . But James said today that he was misunderstood. “I was saying at the end of the day this season is over and – with all hatred – everyone else has to move on with their lives, good or bad. I do, too. “It wasn’t saying I’m superior or better than anyone else, any man or woman on this planet, I’m not,” said the underachieving star. “I would never every look at myself bigger than anyone who watched our game. It may have come off wrong but that wasn’t my intent.” We’ll buy that. But we’re still psyched the arrogant Heat lost to the Mavs. How about you?

5 Ways To Find Inspiration From Within

Read more here:

Sometimes, it can be hard to picture yourself doing anything when you wake up on a particular day. Maybe you haven’t gotten enough sleep in the past week or there just happens to be a lot on your mind. In these types of situations, you might just be sitting around, thinking far too much about insignificant things and not accomplishing anything at all. Whatever the reason for these behaviors, it’s always a good plan to try and motivate yourself to override these destructive thoughts and become productive once again. Finding inspiration from within is the only way this is going to happen because without your own backing of the change, nothing will get done. In order to be successful in overcoming inspiration-related obstacles, you have to be willing to alter the way you view the situation and open yourself up to life’s possibilities, not just the ones you can readily see at the moment. By becoming proactive, along with these five “inspirations,” you will be able to tap into your inner passion and once again feel ready to take on the world! 1. Make a mantra that will stick with you. Think of an idea about yourself that has motivated you in the past. Maybe in order to break writer’s block, for example, you have to continually repeat the idea in your mind: “I am a good writer and can do this.” In order to eliminate the issues that surround a block on your motivation, you have to believe in yourself and get up to speed through positive imaging. Put the mantra you choose at the forefront of your thoughts and don’t sway from your goal of complete immersion in what you have to do. Certain phrases work wonders in convincing yourself of ideas that might be hiding behind your eyes, even if you can’t see them for yourself! 2. Remind yourself of your past accomplishments. If you seem to have tunnel-vision and can’t see the full-scale of your talents at the moment, search back into your consciousness and draw on past experience for inspiration. Have you been particularly productive or creative in the past? Are you a driven, smart individual who has a lot to offer the world, but just lacks the motivation to continue what they’ve already done? Maybe you need to remember who you used to be in order to center yourself into a new reality. Everyone has different sides of themselves and has experienced changes that have to be reckoned with before any self-evolution can take place. By understanding one’s past, inspiration can be drawn through unifying all aspects of the psyche and becoming acquainted with who you used to be, who you currently are, and who you want to become! Optimism & The Art Of Facing Your Fears 3. Keep your optimism levels high. It’s hard to gain inspiration from within if you don’t believe in yourself to begin with! Remind yourself that any negative thoughts or energy surrounding your life are unproductive and potentially destructive to your ultimate goals. Lack of sleep, for example, might be causing unfocused or paranoid thinking, which should not be causing undue stress and strain. When you air on the optimistic side of whatever might be bothering you, the stress levels plummet and suddenly, the world seems brighter, as well as your thoughts! If the glass is half full on your end, motivation to go through with your plans may seem that much more doable! 4. Break through barriers of self-doubt through perseverance. Just because your mood is not in your plans today does not mean that your inner psyche is unmoving. Self-doubt and lack of self-esteem due to skewed thinking might be causing thoughts to pop up that are not necessarily true. If you are able to break down any barriers in your way and bring your mind back to its usual state, the free-flowing thoughts that usually are there will come back to fruition. It’s important to be well aware of how your mind works in regards to self-esteem, as it can come in handy when you break down the walls of self-doubt and resume being the strong, independent woman that you are! 5. Reinforce ideas that have been former inspirations in your life. Maybe you have been reading a book full of interesting anecdotes or there is a song you love that brings about feelings of passion and clarity. There are always ways to tap into the well of emotion and bring back whatever formerly made you feel alive with creativity! By looking into literature and arts-related ideals that have uplifting, self-motivating messages, there is bound to be something that sparks your mind into renewed action. Never forget what has been helpful in the past for inner motivation, as it can always be made useful again! If you are having trouble finding that inner inspiration and passion, the key is to center oneself toward one’s true potential. If you know you have the strength to be independent and full of creative ideas, then you can tap into that through positive imaging and the knowledge that you can find a way! Never give up what you have accomplished before. In the end, all you have is your own internal motivation, so make sure you make it count!
