Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon and Richard Jenkins Join Robert Redford’s Company

Here’s some big casting news to spice up this particularly slow news day: Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon and Richard Jenkins will star in The Company You Keep , the drama which Robert Redford will direct and star in alongside Shia LaBeouf, Nick Nolte and Brit Marling. The film is being adapted from Neil Gordon’s novel about “an ex-Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years, who must go on the run when his true identity is exposed by a young, ambitious reporter.” Production begins in Vancouver next month. George Lucas’s Red Tails Finally Slated for Jan. 20, 2012 Release

The troubled, George Lucas-produced historical action drama Red Tails finally has a release date: January 20, 2012. Lucasfilm announced the news this morning; it comes more than 20 years after Lucas first hatched his tale of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen and a little more than a year after Lucas ordered significant reshoots on director Anthony Hemingway’s film. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard star.

Universal Won’t Make Ron Howard’s Adaptation of The Dark Tower

Apparently, it just wasn’t meant to be — for now. Per Deadline, Universal has decided not to go forward with the crazy-ambitious adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower that director Ron Howard , producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter/producer Akiva Goldsman had planned over three films and two companion television series. Howard is now free to shop the project to other studios, though whether one bites remains to be seen. This is the second major geek property that Universal has passed on this year, following Guillermo del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness . [ Deadline ]

Say what you will about L.A. gangs, but they know how to step it up for a guest: “Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena got a front row seat to Los Angeles gang violence. The actors, who were on riding along with police on patrol in South Los Angeles, were on the scene of a gang shooting late Wednesday. The actors are researching police work for their roles in the upcoming movie End of Watch. . Sgt. Angela McGee says a gang member shot a rival, who is hospitalized with a grazing bullet wounds above his lip and on an arm. Two suspects walked away and there are no arrests.” [ AP ]

80 Years Ago, ‘Muggles’ Meant ‘Marijuana’

Just in time for the millions of Muggles awaiting this weekend’s Harry Potter finale comes this delightful story from the Time archives, dated Sept. 7, 1931: “Ten cents’ worth of a certain bird seed, planted in any back yard, will grow into a yardful of marijuana. Its leaves can be dried, ground and rolled into cigarets, which are bootlegged under the name of ‘muggles,’ ‘reefers,’ or ‘Mary Warners.’ Thinner, shorter than standard cigarets, ‘muggles’ are made from the small delicate leaves of the female marijuana plant. In New Orleans many a schoolchild is said to be an addict; prison authorities find muggle-smuggling a perplexing problem.” Muggle-smuggling! Anyway, now you know. [ Time via The Atlantic Wire ]
