Race Matters: Lawsuit Claims Macy’s Has Store Codes For Minority Shoppers & Quotas To Arrest At Least 5 People Per Week

Lawsuit Against Macys Says Store Has ‘Codes’ For Minority Shoppers A Muslim woman has filed a lawsuit against Macy’s department store after she was arrested & held without cause while shopping back in 2010. via NY Daily News Macy’s security guards worked on a quota system of five “arrests” per week — and nonwhite shoppers were identified by an internal “race code system,” according to a lawsuit. African-American men were referred to as “10-90s” and black women as “10-91s” among store security personnel, a Turkish immigrant charged in court papers after her 2010 arrest. The demeaning code was created by Macy’s “to facilitate its targeting of Middle Eastern, African-American/black and other nonwhite shoppers,” the suit charged. Plaintiff Ayla Gursoy, who is Muslim, said she was detained and arrested while shopping in the Herald Square store on Sept. 18, 2010. Charges were later dismissed. In a partial deposition provided by her attorney, store detective Brenda Howard acknowledged five “arrests” per week was the target for security workers, according to the suit. SMH. It never ends. Humpback Hov Releases Statement Clapping Back At Claims That He’s Choosing Paper Over Politics In Barneys Racial Profiling Scandal!

Shawn Carter finally steps down from The Throne to address the matter at hand Jay Z Releases Statement About Barneys Racial Profiling Scandal Ever since the news broke that Barneys had been accused of racial profiling, Jay Z has found himself in the hot seat as people began to question his motives when he did not immediately renounce his collaborative charity project with the high-end retailer. This evening, Jay released a statement defending his silence against those who implied he lacked empathy for the 2 young , black, victims . Via LifeAndTimes This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit. I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn’t want to make without the full facts. Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education. I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn’t harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration. I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change. – Shawn “JAY Z” Carter What do you think of Shawn’s statement? Do you still think he should pull out of his deal with Barneys, or is he right to wait for the facts to emerge?

A “Lil Positivity” Fired Red Lobster Waitress Get $10,000 From Unknown Fundraiser After Getting N-Word Receipt From Customer

Look at God! Red Lobster Waitress Fired Over Posting Racist Receipt Gets $10,000 From Unknown Fundraiser Via ABCNews A Red Lobster waitress, who said a customer left her a receipt with a racist slur, has received the tip of a lifetime, thanks to a fundraising from online supporters. Toni Christina Jenkins of Franklin, Tenn., said she was shocked when she saw a receipt on the table with “none” on the “Tip” line and the N-word on the “Total” line. “I was just stunned that it happened,” Jenkins, 19, said. “It’s not something that you think in our generation would actually take place, so I was just blown away by it.” After posting a picture of the receipt to Facebook Sept. 10, her story sparked outrage online, prompting a California man to take action. Matthew Hanson, founder of AddictingInfo.org, heard Jenkins’ story and started an online fundraiser called “Tips for Toni” that collected $10,749 in place of Jenkins’ non-tip on the bill for $44.53. “It was about sending a message to racists that Americans aren’t going to tolerate that,” Hanson said. “We raised $10,000 within seventy-two hours. It was really amazing.” Hanson presented the check Sept 30 to Jenkins, who was unaware of the fundraiser. “I literally screamed. I was so confused,” Jenkins said. “I was just so thankful. I felt so blessed and so honored that so many people came together on my behalf to give this to me.” It’s always good to see signs that everyone in the world isn’t a evil d-bag. Bangers: Pro Ballerina Misty Copeland Talks Discrimination Against Black Dancers Without “The Right Body Type” For Vogue Italia [Photos]

Should ballet companies be subject scrutiny because their traditions seem racist? Misty Copeland Talks To Vogue Italia Magazine Extraordinarily talented professional ballerina Misty Copeland is continuing carrying on the torch as one of the only black women in her profession today and she’s doing it with effortless class, style and grace. Vogue Italia recently caught up with Misty and got her to open up about how she got her start, discrimination against young black girls aspiring to be ballerinas and more. Check out a few interview excerpts below: via Vogue Italia During your training, did anyone ever explain to you how rare it was for a black ballerina to gain entrance into any of the major ballet companies? I think that in a lot of ways, I’m happy that my race was not something that was discussed (during my training). It wasn’t an issue that was presented to me at that time. Of course, I was aware that I was black. My mother was very clear about telling all of my siblings who we were. Even though I was of mixed raced, my mother was clear about it…telling me I was black, and that I was going to be seen as black. So that is just how I knew of myself. But it wasn’t something that I thought about when I started dancing. I didn’t see myself any different than all the other girls. And I think that helped me in the beginning. At what point did you realize how few black ballerinas there were in the world of classical ballet? By the time I got to ABT, I was not at all prepared to deal with what I walked into. I just had no history of the ballet and black women in it. I had no idea that I was going to walk into ABT and be the only black woman there, and for the next eleven years still be the only black woman there. And so I just wasn’t prepared. I think over time, maturing and growing, and understanding how the ballet culture and the history of it works, it’s become easier on a daily basis. But it is hard.   Just hearing things every so often, like the fact that I don’t exactly look like a “white swan.” It was very difficult. Historically, the argument has been made that black women don’t have the right body type for ballet. Is this a valid assessment, or an excuse to justify the exclusion? It’s a hard thing to separate and try to figure out. Is it about them being black? Or is it really about the body type only? Because I’ve see dancers that are not black that get accepted into major companies, that do not have ideal bodies. I think it is something that is kind of used as an excuse. There are so many excuses that are used. Too muscular. Too athletic. Just not the right proportion. But I think that the ideal physique and look of a ballerina is always changing with different eras. And it’s continuing to change. And I think more dancers are just more healthy and athletic in general, because of the way that choreography and the different kind of dancing is making its way into ballet. So your muscles are going to change and develop. I don’t think they can, or will be able to use that excuse for much longer. We’re definitely team Misty over this way! In case you’re not too familiar with the bangin’ Ms. Copeland, hit the flip to check out a few flawless flicks of magnificence that is Misty. Continue reading

Race Matters: New Statistics Show Black Community Most Affected By The GOP Refusing To Fully Implement The Affordable Care Act

Statistics Show Black People Most Affected By Obamacare Rejection The statistics are surfacing in the wake of the recent government shutdown that occurred earlier this week when Congress failed to reach an agreement on implementing The Affordable Care Act, among other things, and it seems that African-Americans will feel it the most if something is not done sooner than later on Capitol Hill. via Think Progress Republicans’ refusal to fully implement the Affordable Care Act will leave more than half of the nation’s uninsured working poor, approximately 8 million people, without access to health insurance, a New York Times analysis of census data finds. The 26 GOP-controlled states not participating in the law’s Medicaid expansion are home to a disproportionate share of low-income Americans who aren’t poor enough to qualify for the existing Medicaid program and make too much to be eligible for subsidies in the ACA’s insurance marketplaces. As a result, hundreds of thousands of cashiers, cooks, nurses’ aides, waiters and waitresses will still struggle to afford coverage. “Blacks are disproportionately affected, largely because more of them are poor and living in Southern states,” the New York Times reports. “In all, 6 out of 10 black [people] live in the states not expanding Medicaid.” Despite the slightly shady nature of these statistics, this is huge problem. What will it take for the GOP to stop allowing millions of Americans to suffer just so they can have their way??? Continue reading
