John Singleton On White Directors Making Black Films: “Hollywood Feels Like It Doesn’t Need Us Anymore To Tell African-American Stories”

Kudos to John Singleton for speaking up on the growing trend of black films being made in Hollyweird without any input from blacks! Singleton penned a moving essay about the current state of affairs in black film, applauding 2013 as a banner year where great films made by black are being recognized ( Fruitvale Station, The Butler, 12 Years A Slave ), he also gives props to 42 which had a black director at the helm but help from Jackie Robinson’s widow Rachel and a black producer but he points out a problematic trend since the success of The Help — black films being made by whites with zero white input. Here are some excerpts via The Hollywood Reporter : What if the commercial success of “black films” like 42 and The Help, which also had a white director, are now making it harder rather than easier for African-American writers and directors to find work? That is exactly what people in certain Hollywood circles are debating. When I brought up the issue with a screenwriter friend, he replied, “It’s simple. Hollywood feels like it doesn’t need us anymore to tell African-American stories.” The thinking goes, “We voted for and gave money to Obama, so [we don’t need to] hire any black people.” I could go on and on about the white directors who got it right and others who missed the mark. But my larger point is that there was a time, albeit very brief, when heroic black figures were the domain of black directors, and when a black director wasn’t hired, the people behind the film at least brought on a black producer for his or her creative input and perspective. Spielberg did that on The Color Purple (Quincy Jones) and Amistad (Debbie Allen). Tarantino had Reggie Hudlin on Django Unchained . But now, that’s changing; several black-themed movies are in development with only white filmmakers attached, including a James Brown biopic. That’s right, the story of “Soul Brother No. 1, Mr. Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” is being penned by two Brits for Tate Taylor, director of The Help. A compelling argument can be made that Brian Grazer, the project’s primary producer, has had multiple successes with black talent such as Eddie Murphy and Denzel. And Mick Jagger also is involved, and the Brits tend to have a greater appreciation for African-American creative culture than most white Americans. Still, it gives one pause that someone is making a movie about the icon who laid down the foundation of funk, hip-hop and black economic self-reliance with no African-American involvement behind the scenes. One of Brown’s most famous lines was, “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing; open up the door and I’ll get it myself.” How is that possible when the gatekeepers of this business keep the doors mostly locked shut in Hollywood? In the black film community, the consensus is that we’re entering a new era of “Al Jolson movies.” Jolson, for the uninitiated, was the star of the first “talkie,” The Jazz Singer in 1927, and is best known for donning blackface and singing “Mammy.” He is an apt symbol for what slowly is becoming the norm in Hollywood. Even when there are black directors or writers involved, some of the films made today seem like they’re sifted of soul. It’s as if the studios are saying, “We want it black, just not that black.” Audiences, though, can smell what’s real and what isn’t. And there is a noticeable difference between pictures that have significant contributions from African-Americans behind the scenes and those that don’t. That’s why I can fully relate to the disappointment some friends feel upon hearing about producers holding meetings on black-themed movies without even noticing that no one in the room speaks the language or intimately understands that world. There are cultural nuances and unspoken, but deep-seated emotions that help define the black American experience. The rhythm and cadence in which we carry ourselves among one another is totally alien to most non-blacks, even if it is a constant fascination to them. In many ways, The Help’s $170 million domestic box office set a new paradigm for how Hollywood wants its black pictures: uplifting, sentimental and inoffensive. It’s no one individual filmmaker’s fault. It reflects the latent racism that influences what gets made and what doesn’t in the studio system. What Hollywood execs need to realize is that black-themed stories appeal to the mainstream because they are uniquely American. Our story reminds audiences of struggles and triumphs, dreams and aspirations we all share. And it is only by conveying the particulars of African-American life that our narrative become universal. But making black movies without real participation by black filmmakers is tantamount to cooking a pot of gumbo without the “roux.” And if you don’t know offhand what “roux” is, you shouldn’t be making a black film. Very well done — the whole piece is worth being read in it’s entirety HERE . What do you think? Is it racist for white filmmakers to make black films without black input? Continue reading

Race Matters? Applebee’s Kicks Black Family Out And Calls Police On Them Because Their Kids Were “Too Active”

Wow Applebee’s, was it serious enough to call the police? Family Kicked Out Of Applebee’s Over Kids Kids will always be “active”…it’s a shame a nice family outing had to turn out like this. According to Mail Oline A couple said they are ‘heartbroken’ after staff at Applebee’s called police on them because their children were being too active, it emerged today. Eli Gau and his wife Lillian Maliti admit their sons Ryan, three, and Ethan, one, can be a handful at times but nothing that would warrant being asked to leave a ‘family-friendly’ restaurant. On Sunday night the family of four went to an Applebee’s restaurant in Katy, Texas, for dinner. Everything seemed normal until Ryan wandered away from the table, as children sometimes do. Mr Gau told KHOU 11News: ‘They’re kind of active. They act like children. They’re not adults. ‘I went and grabbed him, and as I was grabbing him and coming back, the manager was walking to me.’ The manager said his children were making too much noise and told them to leave. He had already called the authorities, who were waiting for them outside the restaurant. Really? The Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy gave them a notice warning them for criminal trespassing. Mrs Maliti told KHOU 11 she was stunned. ‘I feel disrespected,’ she said. ‘This has never happened in my life.’ The restaurant markets itself on its website as ‘a prominent eatery [that] draws people of all ages and lifestyles with its fun, family-friendly atmosphere and signature bar and grill menu.’ An Applebee’s spokesperson apologized profusely for the incident and said the management team had mishandled the situation. The family were invited back to the restaurant and given free dinner passes but Mr Gau said they would be taking their business elsewhere. ‘I feel heartbroken, very sad,’ he said. A free dinner is not enough. When management does some ridiculous isht like his…someone’s azz needs to be fired. (Are we wrong for wondering if they got some Bebe’s Kids tho?) Race Matters: University Of Alabama To End Segregated Sorority System

We are still baffled over the segregated sororities in 2013, but we’re glad all the media attention has finally brought about change University of Alabama Ends Segregation In Sorority System According to TIME reports : Nearly a week after the University of Alabama came under fire for persistent segregation in its sorority system, school officials are set to announce a deal that would clear the way for black women to be admitted to the school’s prestigious and historically white Greek organizations. The deal, which a university spokesperson confirmed to TIME, is the first step toward ending more than a century of systematic segregation in the school’s sorority system. The move comes after a story last week in the school’s student newspaper, The Crimson White, about a highly qualified black student being denied a bid to join any of the school’s prestigious, historically white sororities. Despite receiving excellent scores during the recruitment process from current sorority members, the young woman — who requested that her name not appear in the paper’s story – was reportedly blocked by alumnae. The sole reason, according to current sorority members: she was black. Another black woman was also denied a bid. Some alumnae even threatened to pull financial support from their sororities if they accepted black members. “The issue is the alumnae and not the undergraduates,” says Gentry McCreary, who served as Alabama’s director of greek affairs from 2007 to 2011. “There’s definitely some fear, whether real or imagined, that there would be some repercussions if a sorority took an African American member. They’re able to subvert the will of the chapter, and it’s gone on for far too long.” The new agreement will allow sororities to offer new bids to candidates who were not accepted during the recruitment process. The deal was reached following an emergency meeting Sunday night between University President Judy Bonner and sorority chapter advisors. The agreement is expected to allow sororities to extend bids to the young women mentioned in the Crimson White article. If they accept the offers, it will end one of the last bastions of segregation at the school. “The allegations are that young women were not selected because of their race,” Bonner said via email. “If these allegations are true, then that is discrimination. It is against the law, University policy and the policy of the national organizations. No University organization will be allowed to discriminate against students based on their race.” It took a newspaper article to bring about change? Sad. Facebook

Cops Ain’t Isht: NYPD Shoots Two Bystanders While Firing At An Unarmed Black Man [Video]

What the hell ?!? NYPD Shoot At Unarmed Man Via Gawker reports: In a bizarre confrontation last night, NYPD officers shot two bystanders while trying to arrest a man who was blocking traffic just a block from Time Square. An unidentified 35-year-old man “was blocking traffic and appeared to be attempting to be hit by cars when a police officer on foot patrol attempted to take him into custody in the intersection,” according to police commissioner Ray Kelly. After he resisted arrest on West 42nd street and Eighth Avenue, the man allegedly pretended to point a gun at officers, who then fired on him. A 54-year-old woman, who was using a walker, was hit in the leg and rushed the Bellevue Hospital. A 35-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks and taken to Roosevelt Hospital. “The only thing the individual had on his person was a wallet which was recovered from his right rear pocket,” Commissioner Kelly told reporters. After stumbling around Eighth Avenue, the man, according to witnesses, pulled out his Metrocard and pointed it at officers like a gun. Witness Mike Favilla told the Daily News that the man appeared to be mentally ill. “He definitely looked like he was high on something or was mentally off. He couldn’t walk in a straight line. He was limping and jerking his legs around,” Favilla said. Youtube Continue reading

Black Teen Who Shot Baby And Accused White Mom Of Setting Up Murder Sentenced To Life In Prison

Was the verdict fair? Black Teen Who Shot Baby Sentenced To Life In Prison Via NewsOne reports: Georgia teen convicted of fatally shooting a baby in a stroller was sentenced Thursday to spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole after the grieving mother asked a judge to punish the gunman for taking “the love of my life.” De’Marquise Elkins, 18, stood silent and showed no emotion as he was sentenced in a courtroom less than two weeks after a jury found him guilty of murder in the slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago during a robbery attempt. “His first word was never heard. His first sentence was never said,” Sherry West, the baby’s mother, said through tears on the witness stand as she read a statement made to rhyme like a poem or a nursery rhyme. “He never got to sleep in a toddler bed.” The baby was in his stroller and out for a walk with his mother when he was shot between the eyes March 21 in the Georgia coastal city of Brunswick. West, and a younger teenager charged as an accomplice, both testified at trial that Elkins killed the baby after his mother refused to give up her purse. The killing drew national attention and Elkins’ trial was moved more than 300 miles away to the Atlanta suburbs because of pretrial publicity. Elkins was spared the death penalty because the killing occurred when he was 17, which the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled is too young to face capital punishment. Under Georgia law, the only possible punishments for Elkins were life with or without a chance of parole. Do you think the teen was unfairly judged?

Iman And Naomi Campbell Go In On High Fashion Designers Over Racism In The Modeling Industry – “There’s A Time When Silence Is Not Acceptable..”

Naomi and Iman clap back at the lack of black models in the fashion industry… Iman And Naomi Campbell Address Racism In The Modeling Industry The scarce presence of African-American men and women in today’s modeling industry has long been a topic of public discussion throughout the entertainment industry, but now two of the most influential, high profile black supermodels in the history of the industry are speaking up and speaking out. Iconic models Naomi Campbell and Iman recently voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of representation of women of color in the modeling industries just as New York’s annual Fall Fashion Week gets underway. via Jezebel In what GMA is calling an “unprecedented” move, supermodels Iman, Naomi Campbell and Bethann Hardison are going after racism on the runway and publicly calling out the designers who fail to hire a diverse cast of models. While it’s not actually unprecedented — Jezebel’s own Jenna Sauers and Dodai Stewart have been calling out the fashion world on its whitewashing since 2008 — their actions and out-spokeness could have a profound and positive impact, especially considering that Iman and Naomi Campbell are two of the most powerful, high profile models in the business. “There were more black models working [in the ’70s] than there were in 2013,” Iman, on behalf of Diversity Coalition, told GMA’s Juju Chang. “There is a time when silence is not acceptable at all and if the conversation cannot be had publicly in our industry then inherently there is something wrong with the industry.” In an open letter to the CFDA, Diversity Coalition names Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Armani among the worst offenders. This discussion is definitely nothing new, but hopefully such high profile supermodels with career achievements that transcend color voicing their concerns will stir the pot enough to bring about some change. Race Matters: White Hollyweird Actors Mum On Syria For Fear Of Seeming “Anti-Black” For Opposing Obama

Hollywood Mum On Syria For Fear Of Seeming “Anti-Black” SMH. Actors scared of being called racists ?? According to Hollywood Reporter: In 2003, ahead of a U.S. attack on Iraq, a robust anti-war movement in Hollywood included a TV commercial starring Martin Sheen and Sean Penn visiting Baghdad. There were online petitions signed by Ed Asner; letters to President George W. Bush pleading for peace were signed by Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Barbra Streisand and Alec Baldwin; former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell fronted multiple press conferences where celebrities denounced war. The good news for President Barack Obama as he considers a military response against Syria for using chemical weapons against rebels is that he probably won’t have to deal with a similar anti-war movement from Hollywood. But that’s not because there isn’t opposition. It’s just not organized, and, as Asner and Farrell – two of the industry’s most vocal progressive activists — told The Hollywood Reporter Friday, perhaps it never will be. While some conservatives see hypocrisy, Farrell says that an all-out war in Iraq under Bush, a Republican who was very unpopular in Hollywood, was a much bigger deal than potential missile strikes against Syria under the direction of Obama, a Democrat who drew millions for his campaigns from showbiz industry donors. Asner, 83, and Farrell, 74, both expressed extreme disappointment in Obama for advocating military action. “What he is talking about in Syria is a potential war crime,” Farrell said. “It will be illegal, and if citizens are killed it certainly could be considered a war crime.” Also, said Asner, unsuccessful efforts to prevent war in Iraq led to complacency among left-wing activists. “We had a million people in the streets, for Christ’s sake, protesting Iraq, which was about as illegal as you could find. Did it matter? Is George Bush being tried in the high courts of justice?” asks Asner. “We’ve been so God-damned stung in this country by false wars, repeatedly, that, how can you believe in any just war with the history we have had?” Another reason some Hollywood progressives have been reticent to speak out against war in Syria, according to Asner, is fear of being called racist. “A lot of people don’t want to feel anti-black by being opposed to Obama,” he said. Asner said Hollywood activists should read a Huffington Post blog item by Dennis Kucinich, where the former congressman lists the “Top 10 unproven claims for war against Syria.” “Whether it’s a Republican or Democrat president, or Republican or Democrat Congress — and it doesn’t make a God-damned difference — it behooves us to get off our ass and ask these questions,” Asner said. Farrell and Asner both say that beating the war drums on Syria is one of many mistakes Obama has made. “I voted for him, but I’m not proud. He hasn’t thrown himself on the funeral pyre. I wanted him to sacrifice himself. Instead, he has proved himself to be a corporatist, and as long as he’s a corporatist, he’s not my president,” Asner said. “A lot of people have lost hope — with the betrayals, the NSA spying … People aren’t getting active because ‘Who gives a sh*t?’ is essentially the bottom line.” Thoughts?? Discuss… WENN Continue reading
