George Clooney Bests Brad Pitt For Best Actor Golden Globe

‘Descendants’ star calls out Pitt and Michael Fassbender in acceptance speech. By Kevin P. Sullivan George Clooney Photo: Robyn Peck/ Getty Images In a race that was considered to be a battle of the A-listers, George Clooney took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for “The Descendants.” After an evening of joking about his celebrity best bud, George Clooney opened his acceptance speech by letting Brad Pitt know exactly what he thought of him. “I wanted to say it’s nice to see Brad, and it’s nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he’s doing in two films this year,” Clooney said. “But what wonderful work he does in the rest of the world to the rest of the people.” Pitt, who was nominated for “Moneyball,” and Clooney emerged as the front-runners in the category soon after the nominees were announced last month, and their well-documented friendship came to dominate the conversation around the race. Earlier in the evening, Clooney borrowed the cane Pitt used throughout the evening, seemingly to poke fun at his friend. Clooney also acknowledged one of the actors he got to meet for the awards show, fellow nominee Michael Fassbender, and he took the opportunity to crack a joke about Fassbender’s revealing role in “Shame.” “I’d like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal-nudity responsibility that I had,” Clooney said. “Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man. Do it.” Toward the end of his acceptance speech, Clooney got a little more serious and thanked his co-stars and writer/director Alexander Payne. “Thank you very much to Alexander Payne, who makes wonderful films and is a great friend,” he said. Mitt, Schmitt: Who’s Your Favorite Celebrity Mormon?

With wins in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, Mitt Romney has a leg up in the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. If he won the right to face our first African-American President, Barack Obama, Romney would become the first Mormon on a major party ticket. While this is hardly an endorsement of Romney, good for him, and for voters embracing candidates of varying religions, backgrounds and ethnicity. In honor of Mitt, here are a bunch of celebrity Mormons you might not know about! Who’s your favorite? Read THG’s Top 10 and vote in our poll: 10. Mitt Romney . He’ll never be accused of being electrifying on the campaign trail, but he wins. And least so far. Plus, he’s got the hair. 9. Jon Huntsman . Another family man and GOP presidential candidate who embraces his Mormon beliefs. Doing not quite as well in the polls . 8. Amy Adams of Enchanted fame was raised Mormon. Who knew! 7. Marie Osmond and her siblings grew up in a strict Mormon home. 6. Aaron Eckhart of The Dark Knight fame was raised Mormon. Eckhart even transferred to BYU and graduated from the Mormon University in ’94. 5. Paul Walker . Fast. Furious. Mormon! 4. Katherine Heigl . While no longer a practicing Mormon, the former Grey’s Anatomy star credits her LDS upbringing with shaping her character. 3. Lacey Schwimmer . DWTS pro and Mormon (as are our co-#1s). 2. David Archuleta . The American Idol runner-up recently announced he’s stepping out of the limelight to embark on a two-year Mormon mission. 1. Julianne and Derek Hough . The Footloose star and DWTS pro siblings pretty much hit the genetic jackpot with looks, charm and physical abilities. Who’s your favorite celebrity Mormon?

Jon Huntsman’s Daughters Talk Music With Sway

Mary Anne, Abby and Liddy love everything from Rachmaninoff to the Roots, they tell MTV News in New Hampshire. By Sway Calloway Mary Anne, Abby and Liddy Hunstman Photo: MTV News MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Just one day before the big primary here on Tuesday, I touched down in New Hampshire and had an interesting talk with Republican candidate Jon Huntsman’s daughters. Unlike some other political kids out there stumping for their candidate moms and dads, the former Utah governor has let his daughters — Mary Anne, 26; Abby, 25; and Liddy, 24 — be themselves on the campaign trail. That means they’ve been able to tweet (even a shout-out to me !) and post videos — including ones in which they made fun of a Herman Cain campaign clip and another in which they spoofed Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” — and talk about the kinds of things you don’t normally hear from on-message political kids. One of the most fascinating things I’ve found is that while their father is having the race of his life as a first-time presidential candidate and he needs to win this state or have a great showing, his daughters and I spent half our time talking about music they love. Liddy is a big fan of the Roots, which was one of the first groups she mentioned when I asked who she listens to. I thought it was fascinating that she loves hip-hop. She also likes John Legend. Mary Anne is a classical pianist. Abby said they grew up listening to rock and roll. In fact, she said their dad was in a rock band when he was younger (and had long hair) and that if he’d made it as a musician, he might never have turned to politics. Liddy also described the time when she was in seventh grade and hid some CDs under her bed that her dad might not have approved of. That is, until he found them and broke them in half. So even in the heart of politics, you can find music lovers. MTV is on the scene in New Hampshire! Sarah Palin Lays Into "Unscrupulous, Gimmicky Thuggery" of "Obama Ticket Machine"

Sarah Palin weighed in on the race for the White House last night. You were dying to hear from her, we know. You’re so welcome. Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity , Palin, who hasn’t endorsed a Republican candidate in the 2012 campaign, offered general praise for the field after Tuesday’s Iowa caucus results , reserving the red meat for President Barack Obama. Sarah Palin on Hannity “My concern is for the GOP candidate who wins this primary as they go forward to face the Obama presidential ticket machine and really the thuggery that is involved in that,” Palin said, segueing to John McCain’s endorsement of Mitt Romney . “I believe that Senator McCain, in his endorsement of Mitt Romney, Senator McCain and I, we’re the only ones in America who have ever had to face that Obama presidential ticket machine and all that it encompassed,” she added. “What it encompassed, you know, this unscrupulous, gimmicky scheme that it was.” “Senator McCain, evidently has chosen Mitt Romney as the one to be the most prepared to face this thuggery, this scheme that someone’s going to have to face.” Is Romney the best prepared? Or the most electable? Do you wish Palin would have run for President herself? Or that she’d go away forever? Share your thoughts with us.

Poof, Vamoose…Beyotch: Michele Bachmann Drops Out Of The 2012 Presidential Race

Cue the violins… Rep. Michele Bachmann suspended her presidential campaign after placing sixth in Tuesday’s Iowa Republican caucuses, she announced today. “Last night, the people of Iowa spoke with a very clear voice, so I have decided to stand aside,” Bachmann said at a news conference, flanked by her parents, husband and five children. “I have no regrets, none whatsoever. We never compromised our principles and we can leave this race knowing we ran it with the utmost integrity.” Bachmann said she will continue to fight the policies of President Obama, particularly his health care legislation, calling the 2012 election “the last chance to turn our country around, before we go down the road of socialism.” She said she was motivated to stop Obama and not by a thirst for power. “Though I’m a congresswoman by title, a politician I’ve never been. … I’m not motivated by vanity, glory or the quest for power.” Bachmann had staked her candidacy on Iowa, the state in which she was born and raised. In September, campaign manager Keith Nahigian called Iowa a “must win” state. Bachmann placed last out of the six candidates competing here in Tuesday’s first-in-the-nation caucuses, receiving only 5 percent of the vote and losing in Waterloo, the town where she was born. In Iowa Caucus, Young Voters Could Be Crucial

First electoral event of the year takes place Tuesday, and MTV is on the scene. By Gil Kaufman Ron Paul campaigns in Iowa Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images When it comes to presidential politics, Iowa is #1 in line, no matter what. Though it only serves up around 1 percent of the national delegates in presidential contests, pundits and political junkies have looked to the Hawkeye State for more than 40 years for an early indication of who will represent the party in the race for the White House. With President Obama facing no Democratic challenger in his bid for a second term, all the attention at Tuesday’s Iowa caucus will be focused on the Republicans vying to come out on top in Iowa: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman. As of press time, libertarian rabble-rouser Paul was in the lead, in part due to his dedicated core of young supporters. Frequently ignored by the national media, Paul is an enigma in this year’s GOP field thanks to his views on legalizing drugs and abolishing the departments of Education and Commerce, among others. But according to the latest Public Policy Poll , Paul was leading the pack at 23 percent, followed by Romney at 20 and the fast-fading Gingrich at 14. Not surprisingly, Texas congressman Paul is well ahead with voters under the age of 45, with 33 percent of their likely votes compared to Romney’s 16. But the Huffington Post reported that what remains to be seen is whether those hard-partying college students intent on casting their votes for Paul will show up to the caucuses after whooping it up on New Year’s Eve and slowly making their way back to campus after the long winter break. Unlike most of the primaries over the next few months and the general election, Iowans will not walk into a voting booth and pull a lever, punch a card or swipe a touch screen to help vault one of the candidates into an early lead. In a quirky throwback to a previous time, they’ll gather in meeting halls, school gymnasiums and even living rooms to hash out their choices, a scenario that could be disorienting for young voters who may be casting ballots for the first time. With 1,774 caucuses statewide, any registered voter can show up at his or her local caucus meeting after pre-registering as a party member. Once there (the events begin promptly at 7 p.m. and last about an hour), they’ll hear bids from representatives of the candidates and then chat with friends, neighbors and strangers about the strengths and weaknesses of the various candidates as well as about issues that concern them. After everyone has said their piece, they’ll vote in a paper-ballot straw poll and choose their delegates to the state convention. Those 40 Republican National Convention delegates don’t have to immediately declare which candidate they support, but the press will quickly declare a winner based on the percentage of delegates won by each candidate. Unlike in years past, most of the leading candidates for the GOP nomination have not lavished the same kind of attention on Iowa that past presidential hopefuls have. That’s likely the reason why a recent Iowa State University/ Gazette/ KCRG-TV9 poll found that with just one week to go, nearly 38 percent of respondents said they were still trying to decide their vote, with another 34 percent saying they were leaning one way and only 28 percent locked in on the candidate they were definitely supporting. In other words, no matter who has the lead going into Tuesday night, there could be a major upset in the making if the candidates’ last-minute barnstorming blitzes have a big impact on Iowa voters used to lots of face time with their candidates. Plus, the winner doesn’t always take the prize, as in 2008, when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee came in first in Iowa , despite Romney’s lavish spending of around $12,000 per vote. That’s why candidates have historically spent months and months meeting Iowa voters and introducing themselves over and over in order to pass the most crucial Hawkeye exam: the likability test. Once the dust clears, after months of campaigning and 13 televised debates, the national press will anoint a legitimate front-runner and a number of the candidates with the lowest totals will likely hang it up. Rihanna Article Backlash Leads To Editor’s Resignation

Dutch magazine Jackie says story ‘had no racial motive at its basis.’ By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Getty Images After Rihanna took to Twitter to respond to a racial slur used by Dutch fashion magazine Jackie in a recent article written about her, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Eva Hoeke, has resigned from her position at the publication. In a press release translated by Parlourmagazine.com, the publishers of Jackie attempt to break down the sequence of events, including a Facebook apology from Hoeke about the article, followed by Rihanna’s tweets in response, and confirm that the editor has resigned, effective immediately. “I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term ‘n—abitch’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie ,” Hoeke says in the lengthy statement. “Apart from that I also offered a rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution. I regret that I have taken a stand too quickly regarding an article in Jackie — which moreover had no racial motive at its basis. Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately,” it continues. “After putting my heart and soul into for Jackie for eight years, I realize that these errors — although not intended maliciously — are enough reason for leaving. … I should have counted to ten before taking un-nuanced stands through social media channels.” The magazine has extended an invitation to Rihanna “to share her feelings and thoughts on the article in the next issue.” A rep for the singer had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment as of press time.
