Top Five Prejudices In Movies That Refuse To Die

The rest is here:

Pop quiz–Can you name at least two current black action stars, excluding Will Smith and Denzel Washington?  Or the last time you saw an interracial couple on the big screen where the storyline didn’t revolve around the color of their skin and/or didn’t end as tragically as a Shakespearean play? Columnist J.F. Sargent at humor site, Cracked.com explores some of the racial and sexist stereotypes Hollywood  just can’t seem to let go of.  Even with a black man as president, mainstream audiences aren’t comfortable or just don’t care to watch black actor/actresses unless we are in certain supportive roles: the sidekick, the BBF (Best Black Friend), or the domestic ( The Help ).  The author states: So how does this play out in real movies? Black characters end up in supporting roles, instead of being well-developed characters. They’re just there so we can “ judge the other (white) characters by how they treat them .” In other words, we certainly don’t root for racist characters, and we’ll boo racist stereotypes. But our open-mindedness usually stops at the point of actually paying to see a black leading man. Other than Will Smith. Congratulations, Arizona: You’re Still Really, Really Racist For Having “Accent Monitors” In Classrooms

Arizona’s working really hard to become the most racist state in the union and it gets closer to achieving that goal every day. It turns out that the Arizona school board was sending representatives to classrooms to check and make sure that the teachers weren’t speaking with thick accents. That’s right. They didn’t want teachers with accents that indicated Hispanic heritage to teach their students. Some teachers even allege that they were sent to speech pathologists and acting coaches to help them get rid of their accents. After enough uproar, the city finally relented: After almost a decade of sending monitors to classrooms across the state to check on teachers’ articulation, recently made a sharp about-face on the issue. A federal investigation of possible civil rights violations prompted the state to call off its accent police. “To my knowledge, we have not seen policies like this in other states,” Russlynn H. Ali, the assistant federal secretary of education for civil rights, said in an interview. She called it “good news” that Arizona had altered its policy. It’s good to see that they’re changing the policy but…it’s pretty freaking ridiculous that this was even a rule in the first place. SMH.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s at 50: We Need to Talk About Mr. Yunioshi

As delightful as it is to watch Audrey Hepburn flitting about New York in Breakfast at Tiffany’s , gazing adoringly at jewels and pretty things and falling in love as party girl Holly Golightly — the original Carrie Bradshaw — a shadow has loomed over that film for decades: Namely, Mickey Rooney’s cartoonish turn as Mr. Yunioshi, the buck-toothed, bespectacled and slightly pervy Japanese man who lives upstairs. The good news, circa 2011, is that after years of not knowing exactly how to address that ugly, embarrassing moment in classic Hollywood cinema — hindsight and all that — Paramount Pictures, releasing the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray this week, offers a concerted effort to make amends.

Would You Wear Italian Vogue’s “Slave Earrings?”

Continue reading here:

Racism is still very well alive today and is constantly roaring it’s ugly head in the media and fashion. After Nivea told us to “re-civilize” ourselves using their products, Italian Vogue wants us to wear “Slave” earrings which are “inspired by Africans brought to America during the slave trade.” Yes, you read that correctly. The earrings are large gold hoops (pictured to the right), which would seem normal if they weren’t named “Slave Earrings.” Who the h*ll over at Vogues marketing department thought this was OK? As a black person do you feel offended and as a black woman would you purchase these earrings? Should Rihanna Cancel Her Nivea Contract Because Of Their Racist Ad? WTF? Vogue Italia Runs Feature On “Slave Earrings”

Read the original post:

Vogue Italia’s recent “slave earrings” fashion feature has made heads turn. The same magazine that debuted it’s all-black model issue three years ago has just taken several steps way back. Oh, tell me fashion bible, what exactly is a slave earring? Are there ships and sickles involved? No? Then how can, as you’ve written, a “circular shape” recall the greatest violation of human rights in history? Yup, that’s right folks. Vogue Italia seems to believe hoop earrings are so vintage, they’re “slave”-like. Simple, oversized hoop earrings. The ones all kinds of women wear. But, at 70 words long, let’s just assume this article is void of research. And to make matters worse, as if they anticipated the backlash, Vogue included a disclaimer in the article, giving reason to why us readers would be so wrong if we, ya know, actually thought that by “slave”…they meant “slave.” They wrote: ”If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern Unites States during the late 18th century” – it does -”[then] the latest interpretation is pure freedom.” Riiight. Freedom. From an earring. Shut up, Vogue, you’re not chronicling a women’s movement. Backpedaling as best they could, Vogue has since changed the title to “Ethnic Earrings” because it seems they believe those words to be synonymous, which is even more sad. Elsewhere In The World: Oprah Helps Shady Racist South African School Make Itself Look Good By Giving Her A Faux Degree

Oprah was in South African the other day . So, some obscure university with a race scandal to bury decided to make a better name for itself by holding a full-on graduation… just for Oprah’s pretend degree. Oprah Winfrey accepted an honorary degree from a central South African university infamous for troubled race relations, saying Friday the institution had turned an ugly experience into a model for confronting the challenges of reconciliation and remorse. Winfrey came to a school where five years ago, four white students made a video humiliating black housekeeping staff — they are shown eating a stew the students had mimed spiking with urine — and expressing opposition to integrating the historically white University of the Free State. Jonathan Jansen, who in 2009 became the university’s first black rector, called for the four to be forgiven and rehabilitated. Jansen withstood accusations he was conceding too much to racists as he led the university, the students and the cleaners in a closely watched discussion of the role forgiveness could play in post-apartheid South Africa. In a campus ceremony earlier this year, the students’ public apology was accepted by the cleaners. After receiving her honorary education doctorate Friday, Winfrey called five cleaners to the stage and pronounced them heroes. “What has happened here at Free State in terms of racial reconciliation, of peace, of harmony, of one heart understanding and opening itself to another heart is nothing short of a miracle,” she said. “It is truly what the new South Africa is all about.” Winfrey said she had approached Jansen after reading about his work, and accepted an invitation to come to speak to students. University officials decided to make it a grand event. A roar from hundreds of people gathered outside first alerted those inside the university auditorium that Winfrey was about to enter for a ceremony for one that offered as much pomp, circumstance, song and dance as a full class’s graduation. She threw her arms out with joy when told she was now a member of the university family — a “Kovsie.” Other moments moved her to tears. She kneeled on a padded stool to have her degree bestowed, flashing red stiletto heels to the cheering audience of all races. SMH, anything to steal Chelly-O’s spotlight , huh Oprah? Source
