Daniel Radcliffe To Star In ‘The Woman In Black’

‘Harry Potter’ actor will lead cast of thriller based on Susan Hill’s 1983 ghost story. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Although his “Harry Potter” duties are not quite behind him — “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” parts 1 and 2 open, respectively, in November 2010 and July 2011 — superstar Daniel Radcliffe is already lining up work. His post-Potter plans now include three projects that, like “Potter,” are book adaptations, as it was announced on Monday (July 19) that Radcliffe will lead the cast of “The Woman in Black,” based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel. Radcliffe will also return to Broadway for a revival in spring 2011 of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (from Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same name) and recently signed on to star in a remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” due in 2012 and derived from Erich Maria Remarque’s beloved novel. In “The Woman,” a thriller to be directed by James Watkins (“Eden Lake”), Radcliffe will play a young lawyer named Arthur Kipps who’s dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client’s affairs. He works from her creaky old house and, according to the studio’s press release, soon discovers the nearby town “is held hostage by the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.” While Radcliffe’s upcoming endeavors have the based-on-a-book aspect in common, his lineup is actually very diverse: The young star seems determined to follow up his “Potter” credits with work that will show him to be a serious actor. ‘Eclipse’ Fans Swarm Midnight Screenings Across Globe

Theaters from Finland to the Philippines held early screenings of ‘Twilight’ movie. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit The wait ended at midnight, and as MTV News can attest, the lines fans eager to see “Eclipse” snaked around theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Those two metropolises weren’t the only places beset by “Twilight” fervor. Deadline Hollywood reports that theaters in Boston, Washington D.C., Detroit, Cleveland, Denver and Salt Lake City were mobbed at midnight. So too were the theaters holding early screenings in countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and Finland. At this point, “Eclipse” ranks as the widest domestic release in history as it opens in 4,416 theaters in North America — besting the record set by “Iron Man 2” earlier this year. Four thousand of those theaters held midnight screenings, Deadline reported, and several theater chains also had 3 a.m. screenings to meet public demand. IMAX was expected to hold 3 a.m. screenings in 120 of its theaters. In the run-up to release, fans were also taking precautions against widespread sellouts, as “Eclipse” pre-sales spiked. Fandango reported that the vampire flick accounted for 91 percent of ticket sales on Tuesday, after staying in the site’s top five since the pre-sale started in mid-May. By the end of the weekend, “Eclipse” should have a staggering box-office haul. Early tracking suggests a three-day-weekend gross of as much as $140 million, with a six-day purse of up to $180 million. Those are monster numbers, no doubt, but when you listen to how excited fans are, it’s really not that surprising at all. “I’m really excited,” Oladayo Idowu, told MTV News outside a theater in New York. “I’m here for [the midnight showing], so I’m surprised my mom even let me out! I’ve been waiting for this movie since I saw ‘Twilight.’ I’m going to see it again and again and again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Daniel Radcliffe Was ‘OK’ With Being A Shorter ‘Harry Potter’

‘As long as Emma and Rupert weren’t shooting up too quickly either,’ star tells MTV News of falling few inches shy of Harry’s height in books. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe and Josh Horowitz Photo: MTV News In J.K. Rowling’s universe, Harry Potter isn’t a giant but he’s eventually described as slightly taller than average as the series progresses. So what did the actor who’s become synonymous with the wizard think of playing a character whose proportions don’t quite match his own? Daniel Radcliffe tells MTV News he wasn’t too concerned — but with some conditions. “I didn’t get particularly worried because as long as Emma [Watson] and Rupert [Grint] weren’t shooting up too quickly either, I’d look [fine],” he told us earlier this month at the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios . “We’d all look relatively [the same height]. It was all going to be OK,” Radcliffe added. Still, Radcliffe admitted he wouldn’t mind adding a few inches to his real-life frame. “I was worried on a personal level because I wanted to be slightly taller than I am, ideally,” he explained. “But I’ve now accepted it. Basically, I’ve came to the conclusion a while ago that you can either be really bitter about it or you can make loads of funny jokes.” What kinds of jokes, we asked. “When I meet people now and they all say, ‘God you’re so much shorter than I expected!’ I always say, ‘No! I’m actually slightly further away than you think,’ ” he smiled, adding, “Which confuses them.” Can you imagine anyone besides Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Trailer Reveals Daniel Radcliffe’s ‘Dreaded’ Climactic Scene

‘I’m kind of dreading [it], because I don’t know still how I’m going to do that,’ Radcliffe told us last year. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. Daniel Radcliffe had been afraid of this. Probably for years. That final walk into a sinister forest as Harry Potter faces off against Lord Voldemort at the end of “Deathly Hallows.” It’s the scene Harry has been building to since He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named killed his parents and the boy wizard landed at Hogwarts. “I’m kind of dreading [it], because I don’t know still how I’m going to do that,” Radcliffe told MTV News about shooting the scene. That was back in July of 2009. By early the following year, Radcliffe had completed the anxiety-inducing scene. But it was no easy task, taking six full days of shooting to get the epic Harry vs. Voldemort battle right. “It was just one of those scenes where I think because I put a lot of pressure on myself to get it right beforehand, I wasn’t able to relax and enjoy it as I might have done otherwise,” Radcliffe told us in March . “I was slightly annoyed about that.” And now, we finally get to see (in part, anyway) what all the fuss is about, because Harry’s forest walk is featured prominently in the new “Deathly Hallows” trailer , which premiered online Monday. If Radcliffe was indeed as fearful about the scene as he suggested, the actor made good use of those nerves. The Harry Potter we see enter the woods to greet Voldemort is a trembling one who clutches his wand and moves forward toward certain death. He has come to sacrifice himself so that others might live. It is a courageous decision, yet a fraught one: Harry loves Ginny, and he does not want to die. All these emotions are writ across Radcliffe’s face as he approaches Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. “Harry Potter, the boy who lived … come to die,” the dark wizard says. Harry gulps, closes his eyes. This is the end. Voldemort unleashes a ferocious scream. And so their fight begins. As “Harry Potter” fans know, that brawl gets brutal. Even more brutal, of course, than the shoot needed to capture it. “It was really hard,” Radcliffe said. “It was one of those scenes where by the third day of it, we were going, ‘I don’t know if I like this one as much as I did in the beginning.’ It was really, really tough.” What do you think of the new “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” trailer? ‘Harry Potter’ Star Daniel Radcliffe Isn’t Interested In ‘Another Franchise’

‘Going on to any other franchise after ‘Potter’ might seem a little bit of a letdown,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe is facing conflicting emotions these days. On one hand, Radcliffe is sad to see his time as the bespectacled hero come to an end. But on the other, he is very excited about his post-“Potter” possibilities. When MTV News caught up with him, his role in the upcoming “All Quiet on the Western Front” had not been announced, but Radcliffe knew enough at the time to tell us: “There’s lots of stuff on the horizon, but nothing in the immediate future.” Though the film world is essentially Radcliffe’s oyster, given his “Potter” star power, one area in which fans are not as likely to see him is in another big franchise. “I wouldn’t like to get involved with another franchise at all, really,” Radcliffe admitted. “I’ve done that, and I know what that’s like, and it’s been a wonderful thing. Going on to any other franchise after ‘Potter’ might seem a little bit of a letdown.” Instead, Radcliffe hopes to focus on making smaller independent films, but he didn’t rule out blockbusters completely. “If the script came for an amazing huge film, it would be churlish to say no,” he said. What if said amazing script was for the role of Bilbo in “The Hobbit”? “Potter” director David Yates is rumored to be in consideration for the directing gig, after all. “I don’t think I would be asked to play Bilbo,” Radcliffe said. “It’s a ridiculous rivalry [“Harry Potter” vs. “Lord of the Rings”] completely built up by the media, but I certainly would be wary of getting involved in another magical fantasy franchise.” What role would you like to see Radcliffe tackle next? What kinds of films should he make? Let us know in the comments! For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Fat Joe Denies Sexual-Assault Claims

Rapper’s lawyer says woman making claims ‘posed as a fan’ and then made ‘false allegations.’ By Gil Kaufman Fat Joe Photo: Carlos Marino/ Getty Images A lawyer for rapper Fat Joe vehemently denied allegations by a Wisconsin woman who claimed she was a victim of sexual assault in the MC’s limousine on Sunday night. “Rapper Joseph Cartagena, known as Fat Joe, members of his entourage and security staff were briefly questioned by members of the Madison, Wisconsin, Police Department who were investigating false allegations made by a woman who initially posed as a fan and later claimed to be the victim of an assault after demanding money,” Joe’s lawyer, Dawn Florio, wrote in a statement, which was called “Groupie Pretender Targets Rapper for Shakedown.” The statement continues, “At no point did Mr. Cartagena or any member of his entourage assault or have any improper contact with the woman. It is truly unfortunate that false allegations such as these cause the public to doubt the claims of actual victims of sexual assaults.” Police are still investigating the claims made by an unnamed local 33-year-old woman who called police around 12:46 a.m. Monday to report the alleged incident. Joe was in town on Sunday night to perform a gig at the Orpheum Theater. The woman claimed that after the concert, she was invited to ride in the rapper’s Cadillac limousine with his entourage on the way to their hotel, according to an incident report from the Madison PD. She claimed that she was inappropriately touched while riding in the limo. Joe was detained for questioning, along with other unidentified members of his crew, but was not arrested, and he was released early Monday morning. No arrests have been made so far in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Madison Police Department said the alleged victim was scheduled to be interviewed a second time by police on Tuesday (June 22) but that no other information was available on the case at press time. Daniel Radcliffe Thought Justin Bieber Was A Woman

‘I’m so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don’t even try anymore,’ ‘Harry Potter’ star admits. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Radiohead, Hope of the States — these are the kinds of bands Daniel Radcliffe listened to for years to get into character for his scenes in the various “Harry Potter” films. Sometimes at 6 in the morning, he’d pop into the makeup chair and start blasting old-school ska and punk tunes for all to hear. That’s the sort of stuff that gets Radcliffe pumped up to do his job, so it should come as no surprise that he’s rather less familiar with the musical stylings of Justin Bieber. But it is a surprise — and a pretty funny one, at that — to hear who the “Potter” star thought was actually behind hits like “Baby” and “One Time.” “I only heard Justin Bieber for the first time two weeks ago,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I genuinely thought it was a woman singing. I’d never heard it before. Is it big in England yet?” Well, Bieber’s My World dropped in the U.K. in January and went gold by April, and while the pop star’s upcoming tour will keep him within the confines of North America through 2010, there’s always the possibility that he’ll cross the pond again next year. Just don’t count on Radcliffe to be in attendance when that happens. “I’m so out of the loop when it comes to pop culture that I kind of don’t even try anymore,” he admitted. That’s not to say he’s completely disconnected from everything mainstream. Radcliffe has much respect for the artist who’s produced tunes like “Alejandro” and “Telephone.” “I know who Lady Gaga is,” he said. “I think she’s kind of amazing. She’s really got a voice. My god. Not my kind of music, particularly, but she can really sing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
